Bis(zinc porphyrin) Bridged by Benzo Orthocarbonates as a Conformational Switch under Regulation of DABCO and a Cu+ Ion

Rigid trisporphyrin with 1,3,5-triazine core: Synthesis, spectroscopy, and DABCO-induced self-assembly properties

A rigid Zn–trisporphyrin (1), the Zinc complex of 2,4,6-tris(5,10,15-triphenylporphyrinatozinc)-1,3,5-triazine (2) with three porphyrin moieties bridged by a rigid 1,3,5-triazine group, was synthesized and characterized by a series of spectroscopic methods including mass, 1H NMR, electronic absorption, and IR spectroscopy in addition to elemental analysis. The UV-vis spectrophotometric titration results revealed that along with the addition of the 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) form 0 to 3 equiv, 1 could form a 2:3 sandwich-type coordination cage in chloroform, which then transformed into a 1:3 open complex when the DABCO concentration was more than 3 equiv. Such DABCO-induced self- and disassembly processes were also confirmed by 1H NMR spectrophotometric titrations. In particular, it was demonstrated by comparative studies that the synergistic effect of the three porphyrin moieties linked together by the rigid 1,3,5-triazine group in 1 promoted the formation and stabilization of the 2:3 sandwich-type coordination cage. This result will be helpful towards the fabrication of various self-assembly structures based on metalloporphyrins with application potential in diverse areas such as molecular recognition and separation.

Optically Active Porphyrin and Phthalocyanine Systems

This review highlights and summarizes various optically active porphyrin and phthalocyanine molecules prepared using a wide range of structural modification methods to improve the design of novel structures and their applications. The induced chirality of some illustrative achiral bis-porphyrins with a chiral guest molecule is introduced because these systems are ideal for the identification and separation of chiral biologically active substrates. In addition, the relationship between CD signal and the absolute configuration of the molecule is analyzed through an analysis of the results of molecular modeling calculations. Possible future research directions are also discussed.

Synthesis, characterization, and atropisomerism of iron complexes containing the tetrakis(2-chloro-6-fluorophenyl)porphyrinate ligand

The synthesis of iron complexes containing the 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2-chloro-6-fluorophenyl)porphyrin ligand is presented and the factors surrounding the observed atropisomerism are investigated.

Toward unidirectional switches: 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)pyridine and 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)pyridine derivatives as pH-triggered pivots

The pH-induced switching process of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyridine and 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)pyridine derivatives was investigated with the help of UV spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory were performed to show that in the case of 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylpyridine and 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methylpyridine the rotation during the switching process proceeds unidirectionally at the molecular level. If a 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)pyridine derivative is fixed to a chiral cyclopeptidic scaffold, a unidirectional progress of the rotation is achieved macroscopically.

DABCO as a dynamic hinge between cofacial porphyrin panels and its tumbling inside a supramolecular cavity

The heteroleptic supramolecular double-decker porphyrin 1 was synthesized with DABCO as a guest between two cofacial porphyrin units as characterized by (1)H NMR and ESI-MS. While DABCO is not seen to tumble inside the cavity, even at higher temperatures (80 °C), such motion was triggered upon addition of various coordinating ligands (quinuclidine, 4-bromopyridine, or excess of DABCO). Different stoichiometric amounts were needed depending on the n donor quality of the added ligands to initiate tumbling of the "inside" DABCO. As demonstrated in an example with excess DABCO, the tumbling was stopped by lowering the temperature to -50 °C.
