Enantioselective Desymmetrization of Diphenylphosphinamides via (−)-Sparteine-Mediated Ortho-Lithiation. Synthesis of P-Chiral Ligands

Crystal, Solution, and Computational Study of the Structure of Ortho-Lithium N,N-Diisopropyl-P,P-Diphenylphosphinothioic Amide

The first crystal structure of an ortho-lithium phosphinothioic amide complexed with tetramethylethylenediamine 12 is reported. The complex consists of a spirane in which the spiro-lithium is N,N- and C,S-chelated by the diamine and organophosphorus ligands, respectively. The analogous ortho anion 14 obtained by Sn(IV)/Li transmetallation in THF has also been synthesized. Nuclear magnetic resonance study of both anions showed that they exist as monomers in solution and are involved in dynamic processes including the restricted rotation around the P-N bond. 14 is converted at room temperature by nucleophilic cyclization to the dearomatized anion 15, which evolves after a few hours to the benzophosphindole sulfide 16. Density functional theory calculations supported the aggregation state in solution and were used to explore the conformational space of anion 12, the mechanism of ortho-lithiation directed by P(X)-N (X=O, S) groups, and the mechanism of formation of 15.

Ni-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrophosphination of Unactivated Alkynes

The practical synthesis of P-stereogenic tertiary phosphines, which have wide applications in asymmetric catalysis, materials, and pharmaceutical chemistry, represents a significant challenge. A regio- and enantioselective hydrophosphination using cheap and ubiquitous alkynes catalyzed by a nickel complex was designed, in which the toxic and air-sensitive secondary phosphines were prepared in situ from bench-stable secondary phosphine oxides. This methodology has been demonstrated with unprecedented substrate scope and functional group compatibility to afford electronically and structurally diversified P(III) compounds. The products could be easily converted into various precursors of bidentate ligands and organocatalysts, as well as a variety of transition-metal complexes containing both P- and metal-stereogenic centers.

Synthesis of P-chiral phosphine compounds by palladium-catalyzed C–P coupling reactions

An efficient C–P coupling reactions of enantiopure tert-butylmethylphosphine-boranes with aryl and heteroaryl halides is developed by using Pd(OAc)₂/dppf as a catalyst, affording a series of P-chiral phosphines (up to 99% ee).

A practical method for N-alkylation of phosphinic (thio)amides with alcohols via transfer hydrogenation

This manuscript describes a modular method for preparing N-alkyl phosphinic amides from primary or secondary alcohols and primary phosphinic amide (R¹R²P=ONH₂) nucleophiles via transfer hydrogenation. The transformation typically proceeds in excellent yields, employs conveniently available reagents, and produces water as the only byproduct.

New o-substituted diphenylphosphinic amide ligands: synthesis, characterization and complexation with Zn2+, Cu2+ and Y3+

Intramolecular Nucleophilic Substitution of ω-Haloalkylphosphine Derivatives

ω-Haloalkylphosphine derivatives undergo the intramolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction upon treatment with a strong base, yielding either cycloalkylphosphine derivatives or heterocyclic phosphine derivatives. The selectivity of the cyclization of (ω-haloalkyl)alkylarylphosphine derivatives depends strongly on the distance between the electrophilic and nucleophilic carbon atoms and the structure of the phosphorus moiety. The desymmetrization of dimethylphenylphosphine sulfide followed by haloalkylation and cyclization led to the enantiomerically enriched tertiary phosphine sulfide, possessing a cyclohexyl fragment at the phosphorus.

Aminophosphine Oxides: A Platform for Diversified Functions

This review summarizes significant contributions reported on aminophosphine oxides (AmPOs), specifically those containing at least one amino group present as amino substituents on α- and β-carbons including direct P-N bond containing molecules. AmPOs have additional 'N' site(s), including highly basic 'P=O' groups, and these features make favor smooth and unexpected behavior. The most striking manifestations of flexibility of AmPOs are that they are exciting ligand systems for the coordination chemistry of actinides, and their involvement in catalytic organic reactions including enantioselective opening of meso-epoxides, addition of silyl enol ethers, allylation with allyltributylstannane, etc. The diverse properties of the AmPOs and their metal complexes demonstrate both the scope and complexity of these systems, depending on the basicity of phosphoryl group, and nature of the substituents on the pentavalent tetracoordinate phosphorus atom and metal. Two components key to understanding the challenges of actinide separations are detailed here, namely, previously described separation methods, and recent investigations into the fundamental coordination chemistry of actinides. Both are aimed at probing the critical features necessary for improved selectivity of separations. This review leads to the conclusion that, although many AmPOs have already been discovered and developed over the past century, many opportunities nevertheless exist for further developments towards new extraction processes and new catalytic materials by fine tuning the electronic and steric properties of substituents on the central phosphorus atom.

Synthesis and Rearrangement of P-Nitroxyl-Substituted P(III) and P(V) Phosphanes: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Case Study

Low-temperature generation of P-nitroxyl phosphane 2 (Ph2 POTEMP), which was obtained by the reaction of Ph2 PH (1) with two equivalents of TEMPO, is presented. Upon warming, phosphane 2 decomposed to give P-nitroxyl phosphane P-oxide 3 (Ph2 P(O)OTEMP) as one of the final products. This facile synthetic protocol also enabled access to P-sulfide and P-borane derivatives 7 and 13, respectively, by using Ph2 P(S)H (6) or Ph2 P(BH3 )H (11) and TEMPO. Phosphane sulfide 7 revealed a rearrangement to phosphane oxide 8 (Ph2 P(O)STEMP) in CDCl3 at ambient temperature, whereas in THF, thermal decomposition of sulfide 7 yielded salt 10 ([TEMP-H2 ][Ph2 P(S)O]). As well as EPR and detailed NMR kinetic studies, indepth theoretical studies provided an insight into the reaction pathways and spin-density distributions of the reactive intermediates.

A Catalyst-Free Synthesis of Phosphinic Amides Using O-Benzoylhydroxylamines

A practical approach for the synthesis of phosphinic amides via the coupling of secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) with O-benzoylhydroxylamines has been reported. Simply heating the mixture of SPOs and O-benzoylhydroxylamines in the presence of K(2)CO(3) gave the phosphinic amides in moderate to excellent yields under an open air system. This method provides a practical and catalyst-free method for the synthesis of various synthetically valuable phosphinic amides.

Pd(II)-catalyzed enantioselective synthesis of P-stereogenic phosphinamides via desymmetric C-H arylation

We present the enantioselective synthesis of P-stereogenic phosphinamides through Pd-catalyzed desymmetric ortho C-H arylation of diarylphosphinamides with boronic esters. The method represents the first example of the synthesis of P-stereogenic phosphorus compounds via the desymmetric C-H functionalization strategy. The reaction proceeded efficiently with a wide array of reaction partners to afford the P-stereogenic phosphinamides in up to 74% yield and 98% ee. The efficiency was further demonstrated by gram scale syntheses. Moreover, the flexible conversion of the P-stereogenic phosphinamides into various types of P-stereogenic phosphorus derivatives was also elaborated. Thus, the protocol provides a novel tool for the efficient and versatile synthesis of P-stereogenic compounds.

Diastereoselective desymmetrization of diarylphosphinous acid-borane amides under Birch reduction

Treatment of diarylphosphinous acid-borane amides possessing chiral amido functionality with an alkali metal solution in liquid ammonia induced a preferential dearomatization of one aryl substituent at phosphorus leading to the formation of non-equimolar amounts of diastereomers. Diastereoselectivity of dearomatization depends strongly on the structure of a chiral auxiliary.

Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic behaviour of four coordination compounds constructed with a phosphinic amide-TEMPO radical and [M(hfac)2] (M = Cu(II), Co(II) and Mn(II))

In the present work we describe the synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of four coordination compounds obtained by assembling a new phosphinic amide containing the TEMPO moiety, 1-piperidinyloxy-4-[(diphenylphosphinyl)amino]-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl radical (dppnTEMPO), with [M(hfac)2] building blocks (M = Cu(II), Co(II), Mn(II)). The crystal structures of the coordination compounds revealed the usefulness of the functionalized radical to provide discrete or extended architectures. In the copper compound () the ligand is coordinated through the oxygen atom of the NP[double bond, length as m-dash]O linkage to the metal, which exists in a square pyramidal or octahedral geometry. For the cobalt and manganese complexes (), both the phosphinic amide and the nitroxide oxygen atoms are involved in the coordination to the metal leading to one dimensional systems. In the cobalt complex () an interesting spin topology in the zig-zag chain was obtained due to the oxygen atom of the phosphinic amide group being μ2 coordinated to two cobalt(ii) ions. The magnetic behaviour of the coordination compounds shows overall antiferromagnetic interactions involving the metal ion and the organic radical. DFT calculations were performed in order to assign the main path for the magnetic interactions.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C₂₁H₂₂NOP, the amine H atom is involved in N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter­actions, resulting in chains along the c axis. The crystal lattice is consolidated by weak inter­molecular C—H⋯π inter­actions.
