Abstract
The compounds 11,12,13-tri-nor-sesquiterpenes are degraded sesquiterpenoids which have lost the C3 unit of isopropyl or isopropenyl at C-7 of the sesquiterpene skeleton. The irregular C-backbone originates from the oxidative removal of a C3 side chain from the C15 sesquiterpene, which arises from farnesyl diphosphate (FDP). The C12-framework is generated, generally, in all families of sesquiterpenes by oxidative cleavage of the C3 substituent, with the simultaneous introduction of a double bond. This article reviews the isolation, biosynthesis and biological activity of this special class of sesquiterpenes, the 11,12,13-tri-nor-sesquiterpenes.

Abstract
The combination of a Lewis acid-catalyzed inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction with a photoinduced ring-opening (PIRO) reaction in a domino process has been established as an efficient synthetic method to access medium-sized carbocycles. From readily available electron-rich and electron-poor phthalazines and enamines, respectively, as starting materials, various 9- and 11-membered carbocycles were prepared. This versatile transition-metal-free tool will be valuable for broadening the structural space in biologically active compounds and functional materials.

Abstract
In this review, transition metal-catalyzed methodologies and applications that exploit C-C bond cleavage of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) are summarized with a focus on cycloaddition and related addition reactions. Transition metals, including palladium, nickel, iron, ruthenium, rhodium, cobalt, and iridium, can catalyze the cleavage of C-C bonds in activated or nonactivated VCPs. Additionally, these bond-breaking reactions can occur as intra- or intermolecular processes. The properties of activated and nonactivated VCPs are discussed in the Introduction. Various transition metal-catalyzed cycloaddition and addition reactions involving the cleavage of C-C bonds in activated VCPs are then discussed in the next chapter. The transition metal-catalyzed cycloadditions involving the cleavage of C-C in nonactivated VCPs are summarized in the following chapter. Finally, challenges and potential opportunities are outlined in the last chapter.

Abstract
The stereocontrolled formation of medium-sized carbocycles is a major goal in modern organic chemistry due to their widespread occurrence in natural products and pharmaceutically active ingredients. One approach consists in the use of cycloaddition reactions which notably results in high selectivities and atom-economy. To this end, cyclopropanes are ideal substrates since they can provide readily functionalized three- or five-carbon synthons. Herein we report advances made in cycloaddition reactions of cyclopropanes towards the synthesis of medium-sized carbocycles via transition metal catalysis or Lewis acid catalysis.

Abstract
Perhydroazulenes are common structural motifs in various terpene natural products. Herein, we present the synthesis of parent cis- and trans-perhydroazulenes. Conformational analysis performed with density functional theory (DFT, e.g., B3LYP, M06-2X) and MP2 geometry optimizations with a cc-pVTZ basis set, followed by CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ single-point energy computations reveals that the cis isomer is 0.7 kcal mol-1 more stable than the trans isomer. Steric and torsional strains present in the trans isomer are responsible for this unexpected relative cis/trans stability.

Abstract
To illustrate the synthetic significance of C-C activation methods, here we describe an efficient strategy for the enantioselective total syntheses of (-)-cycloclavine and (-)-5- epi-cycloclavine, which is enabled by an asymmetric Rh-catalyzed "cut-and-sew" transformation between benzocyclobutenones and olefins. Despite the compact structure of cycloclavine with five-fused rings, the total synthesis was accomplished in 10 steps with a 30% overall yield. Key features of the synthesis include (1) a Pd-catalyzed tandem C-N bond coupling/allylic alkylation sequence to construct the nitrogen-tethered benzocyclobutenone, (2) a highly enantioselective Rh-catalyzed carboacylation of alkenes to forge the indoline-fused tricyclic structure, and (3) a diastereoselective cyclopropanation for preparing the tetrasubstituted cyclopropane ring. Notably, an improved catalytic condition has been developed for the nitrogen-tethered cut-and-sew transformation, which uses a low catalyst loading and allows for a broad substrate scope with high enantioselectivity (94-99% e.e.). The C-C activation-based strategy employed here is anticipated to have further implications for syntheses of other natural products that contain complex fused or bridged rings.

Abstract
The first rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular [5 + 2] cycloaddition of 3-acyloxy 1,4-enyne and alkene was developed. The cycloaddition is highly diastereoselective in most cases. Various cis-fused bicyclo[5.3.0]decadienes were prepared stereoselectively. The chirality in the propargylic ester starting materials could be transferred to the bicyclic products with high efficiency. Electron-deficient phosphine ligand greatly facilitated the cycloaddition. Up to three new stereogenic centers could be generated. The resulting diene in the products could be hydrolyzed to enones, which allowed the introduction of more functional groups to the seven-membered ring.

Abstract
Allenes are important 2π building blocks in organic synthesis and engage as 2-carbon components in many metal-catalyzed reactions. Wender and co-workers discovered that methyl substituents on the terminal allene double bond counterintuitively change the reactivities of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs). More sterically encumbered allenes afford higher cycloadduct yields, and such effects are also observed in other Rh(I)-catalyzed intermolecular cycloadditions. Through density functional theory calculations (B3LYP and M06) and experiment, we explored this enigmatic reactivity and selectivity of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with VCPs. The apparent low reactivity of terminally unsubstituted allenes is associated with a competing allene dimerization that irreversibly sequesters rhodium. With terminally substituted allenes, steric repulsion between the terminal substituents significantly increases the barrier of allene dimerization while the barrier of the (5 + 2) cycloaddition is not affected, and thus the cycloaddition prevails. Computation has also revealed the origin of chemoselectivity in (5 + 2) cycloadditions with allene-ynes. Although simple allene and acetylene have similar reaction barriers, intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions of allene-ynes occur exclusively at the terminal allene double bond. The terminal double bond is more reactive due to the enhanced d-π* backdonation. At the same time, insertion of the internal double bond of an allene-yne has a higher barrier as it would break π conjugation. Substituted alkynes are more difficult to insert compared with acetylene, because of the steric repulsion from the additional substituents. This leads to the greater reactivity of the allene double bond relative to the alkynyl group in allene-ynes.

Abstract

Conventional
allenes have not been effective π-reactive 2-carbon components
in many
intermolecular cycloadditions including metal-catalyzed [5 + 2] cycloadditions.
We report herein that rhodium-catalyzed [5 + 2] cycloadditions of
propargyltrimethylsilanes and vinylcyclopropanes
provide, after in situ protodesilylation, a highly efficient route
to formal allene cycloadducts. Propargyltrimethylsilanes
function as safe, easily handled synthetic equivalents of gaseous
allenes and hard-to-access monosubstituted allenes. In this one-flask
procedure, they provide cycloadducts of what is formally addition
to the more sterically encumbered allene double bond.

Abstract
The first theoretical study on the effects of ligands on the mechanism, reactivities, and regioselectivities of Rh(I)-catalyzed (5 + 2) cycloadditions of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) and alkynes has been performed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Highly efficient and selective intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions of VCPs and alkynes have been achieved recently using two novel rhodium catalysts, [Rh(dnCOT)](+)SbF(6)(-) and [Rh(COD)](+)SbF(6)(-), which provide superior reactivities and regioselectivities relative to that of the previously reported [Rh(CO)(2)Cl](2) catalyst. Computationally, the high reactivities of the dnCOT and COD ligands are attributed to the steric repulsions that destabilize the Rh-product complex, the catalyst resting state in the catalytic cycle. The regioselectivities of reactions with various alkynes and different Rh catalysts are investigated, and a predictive model is provided that describes substrate-substrate and ligand-substrate steric repulsions, electronic effects, and noncovalent π/π and C-H/π interactions. In the reactions with dnCOT or COD ligands, the first new C-C bond is formed proximal to the bulky substituent on the alkyne to avoid ligand-substrate steric repulsions. This regioselectivity is reversed either by employing the smaller [Rh(CO)(2)Cl](2) catalyst to diminish the ligand-substrate repulsions or by using aryl alkynes, for which the ligand-substrate interactions become stabilizing due to π/π and C-H/π dispersion interactions. Electron-withdrawing groups on the alkyne prefer to be proximal to the first new C-C bond to maximize metal-substrate back-bonding interactions. These steric, electronic, and dispersion effects can all be utilized in designing new ligands to provide regiochemical control over product formation with high selectivities. The computational studies reveal the potential of employing the dnCOT family of ligands to achieve unique regiochemical control due to the steric influences and dispersion interactions associated with the rigid aryl substituents on the ligand.

Abstract
A new type of rhodium-catalyzed [5 + 2] cycloaddition was developed for the synthesis of seven-membered rings with diverse functionalities. The ring formation was accompanied by a 1,2-acyloxy migration event. The five- and two-carbon components of the cycloaddition are 3-acyloxy-1,4-enynes (ACEs) and alkynes, respectively. Cationic rhodium(I) catalysts worked most efficiently for the intramolecular cycloaddition, while only neutral rhodium(I) complexes could facilitate the intermolecular reaction. In both cases, electron-poor phosphite or phosphine ligands often improved the efficiency of the cycloadditions. The scope of ACEs and alkynes was investigated in both the intra- and intermolecular reactions. The resulting seven-membered-ring products have three double bonds that could be selectively functionalized.

Abstract
Rholling in the bicycles: a rhodium(I)-catalyzed cycloisomerization for the synthesis of bicyclic compounds containing a cycloheptatriene ring from linear alkenynes (see scheme; cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene) is proposed to proceed through 1,2-acyloxy migration, 6 π electrocyclization, migratory insertion, and reductive elimination. The overall process can be viewed as a novel intramolecular [5+2] cycloaddition with concomitant 1,2-acyloxy migration.

Abstract
The mechanisms, structures of all stationary points involved, and kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the Rh(I)-catalyzed intramolecular [3+2] cycloaddition reactions of 1-ene- and 1-yne-vinylcyclopropanes (1-ene-VCPs and 1-yne-VCPs) have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The computational results showed that the [3+2] reactions of 1-ene/yne-VCPs studied here occur through a catalytic cycle of substrate-catalyst complex formation, cyclopropane cleavage, alkene/alkyne insertion, and reductive elimination. Alkene/alkyne insertion is the rate- and stereoselectivity-determining step of these multistep [3+2] cycloadditions. The experimentally observed high reactivity of 1-yne-VCPs compared to 1-ene-VCPs is well rationalized by the differences of steric effects in the alkyne/alkene insertion transition states. DFT calculations unveiled that the relative orientation of the tethers in the 1-ene/yne-VCPs plays a key role in controlling the stereochemistry of the [3+2] cycloadducts. In addition, DFT calculation results are used to explain why, in some cases, the formation of the β-hydride elimination byproduct can compete with the [3+2] pathway.

Abstract
Structurally complex and physiologically active natural products often include bicyclic and polycyclic ring systems having defined relative and absolute configuration. Approaches that allow the construction of more than one carbocyclic ring at a time have proven valuable, in particular those that allow at the same time the control of an array of new stereogenic centers. One of the most general and most widely used protocols has been the intramolecular Diels-Alder [4 + 2] cycloaddition, in which a single stereogenic center between the diene and the dienophile can control the relative and absolute configuration of the product. We report a two-step [1 + 4 + 1] procedure for bicyclic and polycyclic construction, based on the cyclization of an omega-dienyl ketone. This is complementary to, and will likely be as useful as, the intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition.
