Abstract
A tricoordinated gold(I) chloride complex, tBuXantphosAuCl, supported by a sterically bulky 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)xanthene ligand (tBuXantphos) was synthesized. This complex features a remarkably longer Au-Cl bond length [2.632(1) Å] than bicoordinated linear gold complexes (2.27-2.30 Å) and tricoordinated XantphosAuCl [2.462(1) Å]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a cocrystal of tBuXantphosAuCl and pentafluoronitrobenzene (PFNB) and UV-vis spectroscopic titration experiments revealed the existence of an anion-π interaction between the Cl anion ligand and PFNB. Stoichiometric reaction between PFNB and tBuXantphosAuOtBu, after replacement of Cl by a more nucleophilic tBuO anion ligand, showed higher reactivity and para selectivity in the transformation of C-F to C-OtBu bond, distinctively different from that when only KOtBu was used (ortho selectivity) under the identical condition. Mechanistic studies including density functional theory calculations suggested a gold-mediated nucleophilic ligand attack of the C-F bond pathway via an SNAr process. On the basis of these results, using trimethylsilyl derivatives TMS-X (X = OMe, SEt, NEt2) as the nucleophilic ligand source and the fluorine acceptor, catalytic transformation of the C-F bond of aromatic substrates to the C-X (X = O, S, N) bond was achieved with tBuXantphosAuCl as the catalyst (up to 20 turnover numbers).

Abstract
The reaction of 3-perylenylmethylen-4'-ethylaniline () with [Pt2Me4(μ-SMe2)2] (and subsequent addition of PPh3) or with [Pt2(η(3)-C4H7)2(μ-Cl)2] produced cyclometallated Pt(II) complexes [Pt(C^N)Me(PPh3)] () and, respectively, [Pt2(C^N)2(μ-Cl)2] () (HC^N = 3-C20H11CH[double bond, length as m-dash]NC6H4-p-C2H5), with Pt bound to the ortho site of the perylenyl fragment. From the mononuclear complexes [Pt(C^N)L2] (L2 = acac (); S2COMe (); S2CNEt2 () are easily formed. Oxidative addition of methyl iodide to the square-planar Pt(II) complexes , , and gave the corresponding cyclometallated Pt(IV) compounds [Pt(C^N)L2MeI] , and . The X-ray structures of , , and show that the perylenyl fragment remains essentially flat in and and slightly twisted in . Comparison of the optical properties of these Pt(II) complexes with those reported for similar Pd(II) derivatives reveals that the change of metal exerts a notable influence on the UV-vis spectra. In solution at room temperature, all the Pt complexes exhibit fluorescence associated with the perylene fragment with low emission quantum yields for the Pt(II) complexes (<1%) and remarkably higher emission values for the Pt(IV) complexes: up to 29%, with emission lifetimes of 1-5 ns. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were performed on the perylene imine and on representative complexes [M(C^N)(acac)] (M = Pd, Pt) and [Pt(C^N)(acac)MeI] to analyse the absorption spectra. These calculations support a perylene-dominated intraligand π-π*emissive state based on the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the perylene chromophore, and a ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (more intense for the Pt(II) complex) that explains the observed influence of the metal on the absorption properties.

Abstract
The reaction of the cyclometallated complex [PtCl(N^C)(dmso)], 1 (N^C represents the cyclometallated Schiff base, benzylidene-2,6-diisopropylphenylamine), with 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene, dppf, bis(diphenylphosphino)methane, dppm, or 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, dppe, in a 2 : 1 ratio or an equimolar ratio using acetone as the solvent produced the corresponding binuclear or mononuclear diphosphine platinum complexes. In the case of the mononuclear complexes, the diphosphines act as either a bidentate ligand or a monodentate ligand depending on the size of the bite angle of the diphosphines, while in the case of the binuclear complexes, the diphosphines act as a bridging ligand between the two metal centres. The solid state structures of some of the binuclear as well as mononuclear species are reported. The mononuclear derivatives were found to show different behaviour in solution and in the solid state when compared to the binuclear analogues. This behaviour is also influenced by the nature of the diphosphine ligands employed.

Abstract
Oscillation of the 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmphen) ligand between nonequivalent exchanging sites in [Pt(Me)(dmphen)(P(o-tolyl)3)]+ and phosphane rotation around the Pt-P bond take place at the same rate. Thus, this cationic complex behaves as a molecular gear, exhibiting a fascinating synchronism between two otherwise independent fluxional motions. The process (DeltaG(3330)(#) = 68.5 +/- 0.2 kJ mol(-1)) was found to be unaffected by (i) the nature of various counteranions (X = PF6- 1, SbF6- 2, CF3SO3- 3, BF4- 4, BArf- 5), (ii) the polarity or the electron-donor properties of the solvent and, (iii) the addition of weak nucleophiles. Restricted phosphane rotation around the Pt-P bond impedes free dmphen oscillation in a 14-electron three-coordinate T-shaped intermediate, containing eta1-coordinated dmphen, generated by easy Pt-N bond dissociation from [Pt(Me)(dmphen)(P(o-tolyl)3)]+. 1-5 undergo easy orthoplatination, leading to new [Pt(dmphen){CH2C6H4P(o-tolyl)2-kappaC,P}]X cyclometalated Pt(II) compounds (X = PF6- 1, SbF6- 2, CF3SO3- 3, BF4- 4, BArf- 5). The kinetics of the cyclometalation of 3 and 4 were followed in tetrachloroethane by both 1H NMR and spectrophotometric techniques (kobs = 1.7 x 10-4 s(-1) at 333 K, DeltaH = 59.3 +/- 3 kJ mol(-1), and DeltaS = -141 +/- 8 J K(-1) mol(-1)). Ring opening of dmphen is again a prerequisite for C-H bond activation, which takes place through a multistep oxidative-addition reductive-elimination pathway. The molecular structure of cyclometalated 10 shows a butterfly shape with two o-tolyl rings projected above and below the coordination plane. Variable-temperature 1H NMR spectra revealed hindered rotation around the P-Cipso(o-tolyl) bonds at rather mild temperatures (DeltaG(3330)(#) = 55.2 +/- 0.4 kJ mol(-1)). Dmphen oscillation results very slowly and is dependent on the nature of the counteranions, of the solvents, and is strongly accelerated by the presence of weak nucleophiles that act as catalysts, according to an associative mode of activation.

Abstract
The reaction of cis-[PtCl(2)(dmso)2] with ligands 4-ClC(6)H(4)CHNCH(2)C(6)H(5) (1a) and 4-ClC(6)H(4)CHNCH(2)(4-ClC(6)H(4)) (1b) in the presence of sodium acetate and using either methanol or toluene as solvent produced the corresponding five-membered endo-metallacycles [PtCl{(4-ClC(6)H(3))CHNCH(2)C(6)H(5)}{SOMe(2)}] (2a) and [PtCl{(4-ClC(6)H(3))CHNCH(2)(4'-ClC(6)H(4))}{SOMe(2)}] (2b). An analogous reaction for ligands 2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3)CHNCH(2)C(6)H(5) (1c) and 2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3)CHNCH(2)(4-ClC(6)H(4)) (1d) produced five-membered exo-metallacycles [PtCl{(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))CHNCH(2)C(6)H(4)}{SOMe(2)}] (2c) and [PtCl{(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))CHNCH(2)(4'-ClC(6)H(3))}{SOMe(2)}] (2d) when the reaction was carried out in methanol and seven-membered endo-platinacycles [PtCl{(MeC(6)H(3))ClC(6)H(3)CHNCH(2)C(6)H(4)}{SOMe(2)}] (3c) and [PtCl{(MeC(6)H(3))ClC(6)H(3)CHNCH(2)(4'-ClC(6)H(3))}{SOMe(2)}] (3d) when toluene was used as a solvent. The reaction of 2,4,6-(CH(3))(3)C(6)H(2)CHNCH(2)(4-ClC(6)H(4)) (1e) produced in both solvents an exo-platinacycle [PtCl{(2,4,6-(CH(3))(3)C(6)H(2))CHNCH(2)(4'-ClC(6)H(3))}{SO(CH(3))(2)}] (2e). Cyclometallation of 4-chlorobenzylamine was also achieved to produce compound [PtCl{(4-ClC(6)H(3))CH(2)NH(2)}{SOMe(2)}] (2g). The reactions of endo- and exo-metallacycles with phosphines evidenced the higher lability of the Pt-N bond in exo-metallacycles while a comparative analysis of the crystal structures points out a certain degree of aromaticity in the endo-metallacycle.

Abstract
Condensation of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehydes with 2-, 3-, and 4-H2NC6H4Bpin (pin = 1,2-O2C2Me4) gave the corresponding boron-containing pyridinecarboxaldimines (NNBpin). Addition of these ligands to [PtCl2(coe)]2 (coe = cis-cyclooctene) gave complexes of the type cis-PtCl2(NNBpin) in moderate yields. The platinum complexes have been examined for their potential cytotoxicities against OV2008 (human ovarian carcinoma) and the analogous cisplatin-resistant cell line C13. Abstract
Five platinum pyridin-2-ylcarboxaldimine complexes of the type cis-[PtCl2(2-C5H4NCH=NR)] (R = CH2CH2OH (1); R = N(CH2CH2)2O (2); R = C6H5 (3); R = 1-C10H7 (4); R = (CH2)8CH=CH(CH2)7CH3 (5)) were prepared and their in vitro reactivity towards a 20-base pair (single- and double-stranded) DNA determined using nuclease digest studies and RP-HPLC. Variation of the imine functionality allowed for the design of compounds with different physical and chemical properties. Complexes 1 and 3 showed binding to both single- and double-stranded DNA comparable to that of cisplatin (cis-[PtCl2(NH3)2]). Crystals of 1 were monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, a = 9.6612 (15), b = 12.9678 (19), c = 9.7004(13) Å, β = 117.73(3)°, Z = 4.Key words: platinum, pyridin-2-ylcarboxaldimines, DNA binding studies.
