Abstract
Though late transition metal aromatic metallabenzenes and related heteroatom-containing analogues have been well studied, the corresponding aromatic early transition metal complexes remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of aromatic, planar, and delocalised organotantallapyridinium complexes via a simple one-pot process by sequential treatment of tantalum methyl complex [η5:σ-Me2C(C5H4)(C2B10H10)]TaMe3 with alkynes and isocyanide. Single-crystal X-ray analyses, NMR spectroscopic data and DFT calculations suggest that they are aromatic tantallapyridinium complexes, a class of long-sought-after molecules. This work would shed some light on the preparation of metallaaromatics involving early transition metals.

Abstract
The alkylation of the starting pseudooctahedral dichlorido imido hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate niobium and tantalum(v) compounds [MTp*Cl2(NtBu)] (M = Nb,Ta; Tp* = BH(3,5-Me2C3HN2)3) with MgClR in different conditions led to new alkyl chlorido imido derivatives [MTp*ClR(NtBu)] (M = Nb/Ta, R = CH2CH31a/1b, CH2Ph 2a/2b, CH2tBu 3a/3b, CH2SiMe34a/4b, CH2CMe2Ph 5a/5b), whereas the dimethyl derivatives [MTp*Me2(NtBu)] (M = Nb 6a, Ta 6b) could be isolated as unitary species when the reaction was carried out using 2 equivalents of the magnesium reagent MgClMe. However, the chlorido methyl [MTp*ClMe(NtBu)] (M = Nb 7a, Ta 7b) complexes were obtained by heating at 50 °C the dichlorido and dimethyl imido complexes mixtures in a 1 : 1 ratio. All of the complexes were studied by multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and the molecular structures of 1b, 2a/b, 3a/b, 4a and 5a/b were determined by X-ray diffraction methods. In the solid state the complexes 1b, 4a and 5a exhibit only a gauche-anti conformation and the complexes 2a/b, 3a/b and 5b exhibit only a gauche-syn conformation of the alkyl substituents, whereas both conformational states, which do not show mutual exchange in the NMR time scale, were observed for 3a/b in a benzene-d6 solution. The (15)N chemical shifts of the complexes 1-7 are discussed.

Abstract
The synthesis and reactivity of dibenzyl cationic tantalum imido complexes is described. The trialkyl tantalum imido compounds Bn(3)Ta=NCMe(3) (1) and Np(3)Ta=NCMe(3) (2) were synthesized as starting materials for the study of dialkyl cationic tantalum imido complexes. Compound 1 undergoes insertion reactions with diisopropylcarbodiimide and 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide to give (bisamidinate)imido complex 5 and (bisimino-acyl)imido complex 6, respectively. Treatment of compound 1 with B(C(6)F(5))(3) gives the zwitterionic tantalum complex [Bn(2)Ta=NCMe(3)][BnB(C(6)F(5))(3)] (7) which is stabilized by eta(6)-coordination of the benzyl triaryl borate anion. Coordination of the aryl anion can be displaced by three equivalents of pyridine to give the Lewis base complex 8. Treatment of compound 1 with [Ph(3)C][B(C(6)F(5))(4)] gives the cationic tantalum imido complex [Bn(2)Ta=NCMe(3)][B(C(6)F(5))(4)] (3). This salt forms insoluble aggregates unless trapped by THF coordination or an insertion reaction with an alkyne or an alkene. Cation 3 undergoes migratory insertion reactions with diphenylacetylene, phenylacetylene, norbornene, and cis-cyclooctene to give the corresponding alkenyl or modified alkyl imido complexes. The characterization of these products and the significance of these insertion reactions with respect to Ziegler-Natta polymerizations and hydroamination reactions are described.
