Reactions of a Hexahydride-Osmium Complex with Aldehydes: Double C−Hα Activation−Decarbonylation and Single C−Hα Activation−Hydroxylation Tandem Processes and Catalytic Tishchenko Reactions

Reactions of an Osmium-Hexahydride Complex with 2-Butyne and 3-Hexyne and Their Performance in the Migratory Hydroboration of Aliphatic Internal Alkynes

Reactions of the hexahydride OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ (1) with 2-butyne and 3-hexyne and the behavior of the resulting species toward pinacolborane (pinBH) have been investigated in the search for new hydroboration processes. Complex 1 reacts with 2-butyne to give 1-butene and the osmacyclopropene OsH₂(η²-C₂Me₂)(PⁱPr₃)₂ (2). In toluene, at 80 °C, the coordinated hydrocarbon isomerizes into a η⁴-butenediyl form to afford OsH₂(η⁴-CH₂CHCHCH₂)(PⁱPr₃)₂ (3). Isotopic labeling experiments indicate that the isomerization involves Me-to-C_Os hydrogen 1,2-shifts, which take place through the metal. The reaction of 1 with 3-hexyne gives 1-hexene and OsH₂(η²-C₂Et₂)(PⁱPr₃)₂ (4). Similarly to 2, complex 4 evolves to η⁴-butenediyl derivatives OsH₂(η⁴-CH₂CHCHCHEt)(PⁱPr₃)₂ (5) and OsH₂(η⁴-MeCHCHCHCHMe)(PⁱPr₃)₂ (6). In the presence of pinBH, complex 2 generates 2-pinacolboryl-1-butene and OsH{κ²-H,H-(H₂Bpin)}(η²-HBpin)(PⁱPr₃)₂ (7). According to the formation of the borylated olefin, complex 2 is a catalyst precursor for the migratory hydroboration of 2-butyne and 3-hexyne to 2-pinacolboryl-1-butene and 4-pinacolboryl-1-hexene. During the hydroboration, complex 7 is the main osmium species. The hexahydride 1 also acts as a catalyst precursor, but it requires an induction period that causes the loss of 2 equiv of alkyne per equiv of osmium.

Metathesis between E-C(spn ) and H-C(sp3 ) σ-Bonds (E=Si, Ge; n=2, 3) on an Osmium-Polyhydride

The silylation of a phosphine of OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ is performed via net‐metathesis between Si−C(spⁿ) and H−C(sp³) σ‐bonds (n=2, 3). Complex OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ activates the Si−H bond of Et₃SiH and Ph₃SiH to give OsH₅(SiR₃)(PⁱPr₃)₂, which yield OsH₄{κ¹‐P,η²‐SiH‐[ⁱPr₂PCH(Me)CH₂SiR₂H]}(PⁱPr₃) and R−H (R=Et, Ph), by displacement of a silyl substituent with a methyl group of a phosphine. Such displacement is a first‐order process, with activation entropy consistent with a rate determining step occurring via a highly ordered transition state. It displays selectivity, releasing the hydrocarbon resulting from the rupture of the weakest Si‐substituent bond, when the silyl ligand bears different substituents. Accordingly, reactions of OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ with dimethylphenylsilane, and 1,1,1,3,5,5,5‐heptamethyltrisiloxane afford OsH₅(SiR₂R′)(PⁱPr₃)₂, which evolve into OsH₄{κ¹‐P,η²‐GeH‐[ⁱPr₂PCH(Me)CH₂SiR₂H]}(PⁱPr₃) (R=Me, OSiMe₃) and R′−H (R′=Ph, Me). Exchange reaction is extended to Et₃GeH. The latter reacts with OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ to give OsH₅(GeEt₃)(PⁱPr₃)₂, which loses ethane to form OsH₄{κ¹‐P,η²‐GeH‐[ⁱPr₂PCH(Me)CH₂GeEt₂H]}(PⁱPr₃).

Alternative Conceptual Approach to the Design of Bifunctional Catalysts: An Osmium Germylene System for the Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid

The reaction of the hexahydride OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ with a P,Ge,P-germylene-diphosphine affords an osmium tetrahydride derivative bearing a Ge,P-chelate, which arises from the hydrogenolysis of a P–C(sp³) bond. This Os(IV)–Ge(II) compound is a pioneering example of a bifunctional catalyst based on the coordination of a σ-donor acid, which is active in the dehydrogenation of formic acid to H₂ and CO₂. The kinetics of the dehydrogenation, the characterization of the resting state of the catalysis, and DFT calculations point out that the hydrogen formation (the fast stage) exclusively occurs on the coordination sphere of the basic metal center, whereas both the metal center and the σ-donor Lewis acid cooperatively participate in the CO₂ release (the rate-determining step). During the process, the formate group pivots around the germanium to approach its hydrogen atom to the osmium center, which allows its transfer to the metal and the CO₂ release.

An alternative class of bifunctional catalysts can be assembled by coordination of σ-donor Lewis acids to platinum-group-metal basic fragments. In contrast to what happens with the previously reported bifunctional catalysts, this design allows enhancing the basicity of the base and the acidity of the acid. According to this, a bifunctional catalyst for the dehydrogenation of formic acid, based on an osmium(IV)-germylene cooperative system, has been prepared and the mechanism of the catalysis established.

Hydration of Aliphatic Nitriles Catalyzed by an Osmium Polyhydride: Evidence for an Alternative Mechanism

The hexahydride OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ competently catalyzes the hydration of aliphatic nitriles to amides. The main metal species under the catalytic conditions are the trihydride osmium(IV) amidate derivatives OsH₃{κ²-N,O-[HNC(O)R]}(PⁱPr₃)₂, which have been isolated and fully characterized for R = ⁱPr and ^tBu. The rate of hydration is proportional to the concentrations of the catalyst precursor, nitrile, and water. When these experimental findings and density functional theory calculations are combined, the mechanism of catalysis has been established. Complexes OsH₃{κ²-N,O-[HNC(O)R]}(PⁱPr₃)₂ dissociate the carbonyl group of the chelate to afford κ¹-N-amidate derivatives, which coordinate the nitrile. The subsequent attack of an external water molecule to both the C(sp) atom of the nitrile and the N atom of the amidate affords the amide and regenerates the κ¹-N-amidate catalysts. The attack is concerted and takes place through a cyclic six-membered transition state, which involves C_nitrile···O–H···N_amidate interactions. Before the attack, the free carbonyl group of the κ¹-N-amidate ligand fixes the water molecule in the vicinity of the C(sp) atom of the nitrile.

The hexahydride complex OsH₆(PⁱPr₃)₂ competently catalyzes the hydration of aliphatic nitriles to amides. Isolation of the main metal species under the catalytic conditions, kinetics of hydration, and density functional theory calculations support an alternative mechanism to those previously reported.

Organoactinides in catalytic transformations: scope, mechanisms and Quo Vadis

The last decade has witnessed brilliant and remarkable advances in the chemistry of the early actinides in stoichiometric and in challenging catalytic processes. This canvas of knowledge allows the design of chemical reactivities reaching a high level of sophistication. This review highlights the latest results obtained since 2008 on those catalytic processes.

Catalytic Transformation of Aldehydes with Nickel Complexes through η(2) Coordination and Oxidative Cyclization

Chemists no longer doubt the importance of a methodology that could activate and utilize aldehydes in organic syntheses since many products prepared from them support our daily life. Tremendous effort has been devoted to the development of these methods using main-group elements and transition metals. Thus, many organic chemists have used an activator-(aldehyde oxygen) interaction, namely, η(1) coordination, whereby a Lewis or Brønsted acid activates an aldehyde. In the field of coordination chemistry, η(2) coordination of aldehydes to transition metals by coordination of a carbon-oxygen double bond has been well-studied; this activation mode, however, is rarely found in transition-metal catalysis. In view of the distinctive reactivity of an η(2)-aldehyde complex, unprecedented reactions via this intermediate are a distinct possibility. In this Account, we summarize our recent results dealing with nickel(0)-catalyzed transformations of aldehydes via η(2)-aldehyde nickel and oxanickelacycle intermediates. The combination of electron-rich nickel(0) and strong electron-donating N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands adequately form η(2)-aldehyde complexes in which the aldehyde is highly activated by back-bonding. With Ni(0)/NHC catalysts, processes involving intramolecular hydroacylation of alkenes and homo/cross-dimerization of aldehydes (the Tishchenko reaction) have been developed, and both proceed via the simultaneous η(2) coordination of aldehydes and other π components (alkenes or aldehydes). The results of the mechanistic studies are consistent with a reaction pathway that proceeds via an oxanickelacycle intermediate generated by the oxidative cyclization with a nickel(0) complex. In addition, we have used the η(2)-aldehyde nickel complex as an effective activator for an organosilane in order to generate a silicate reactant. These reactions show 100% atom efficiency, generate no wastes, and are conducted under mild conditions.

Highly regioselective osmium-catalyzed hydroformylation

The first highly regioselective and general osmium-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins to aldehydes is reported. The combination of Os3(CO)12 and imidazoyl-substituted phosphine ligands allows n-selective (up to 99%) hydroformylation of bulk aliphatic as well as functional alkenes in good yields (64-87%).

Mechanistic origin of chemoselectivity in thiolate-catalyzed Tishchenko reactions

The thiolate-catalyzed Tishchenko reaction has shown high chemoselectivity for the formation of double aromatic-substituted esters. In the present study, the detailed reaction mechanism and, in particular, the origin of the observed high chemoselectivity, have been studied with DFT calculations. The catalytic cycle mainly consisted of three steps: 1,2-addition, hydride transfer, and acyl transfer steps. The calculation results reproduce the experimental observations that 4-chlorobenzaldehyde acts as the hydrogen donor (carbonyl part in the ester product), while 2-methoxybenzaldehyde acts as the hydrogen acceptor (alcohol part in the product). The two main factors are responsible for such chemoselectivity: 1) in the rate-determining hydride transfer step, the para-chloride substituent facilitates the hydride-donating process by weakening the steric hindrance, and 2) the ortho-methoxy substituent facilitates the hydride-accepting process by stabilizing the magnesium center (by compensating for the electron deficiency).

A molecularly defined iron-catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes

A selective iron-based catalyst system for the hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to allylic alcohols is presented. Applying the defined iron-tetraphos complex [FeF(L)][BF4] (L = P(PhPPh2)3) in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid a broad range of aldehydes are reduced in high yields using low catalyst loadings (0.05-1 mol %). Excellent chemoselectivity for the reduction of aldehydes in the presence of other reducible moieties, for example, ketones, olefins, esters, etc. is achieved. Based on the in situ detected hydride species [FeH(H2)(L)](+) a catalytic cycle is proposed that is supported by computational calculations.

Mono- and dinuclear osmium N,N'-di- and tetraphenylbipyridyls and extended bipyridyls. Synthesis, structure and electrochemistry

The efficient synthesis of mono- and dinuclear Os(IV) bipyridyl complexes is reported. These compounds show a two-step oxidation process leading to notable structural changes, which are reflected in their emission properties. During the second oxidation process a tetracation with a hydride-dihydrogen structure (instead of a trihydride) is formed. This results in a significant bathochromic shift of the emission band, accompanied by a moderate increase in intensity.

Mechanistic origin of cross-coupling selectivity in Ni-catalysed Tishchenko reactions

Mechanistic studies have been performed for the recently developed, Ni-catalysed selective cross-coupling reaction between aryl and alkyl aldehydes. A mono-carbonyl activation (MCA) mechanism (in which one of the carbonyl groups is activated by oxidative addition) was found to be the most favourable pathway, and the rate-determining step is oxidative addition. Analysing the origin of the observed cross-coupling selectivity, we found the most favourable carbonyl activation step requires both coordination of the aryl aldehyde and oxidative addition of the alkyl aldehyde. Therefore, the stronger π-accepting ability of the aryl aldehyde (relative to alkyl aldehyde) and the ease of oxidative addition of the alkyl aldehyde (relative to aryl aldehyde) are responsible for the cross-coupling selectivity.
