N-Heterocyclic Carbene Palladium Complexes Bearing Carboxylate Ligands and Their Catalytic Activity in the Hydroarylation of Alkynes

Control over Anion Coordination on Pd(II), Cu(I), and Ag(I) with Regioisomeric Phosphine-Carboxylate Ligands

The coordination of anionic donors is involved at various stages of catalytic cycles in transition-metal catalysis, but control over the spatial positioning of anions around a metal center is a challenge in coordination chemistry. Here we show that regioisomeric phosphine-carboxylate ligands provide spatial anion control on palladium(II) centers by favoring either κ2, cis-κ1, or trans-κ1 coordination of the carboxylate donor. Additionally, the palladium(II) carboxylates, which contain a methyl donor, upon protonation, deliver metal-alkyl complexes that feature a coordinated carboxylic acid. Such complexes can be considered as models for the minima that follow the concerted metalation-deprotonation transition state for C-H activation. The predictability of the coordination modes is further demonstrated on silver(I) and copper(I) centers, for which less common structures of mononuclear and dinuclear complexes can be obtained by using spatial anion control. Our results demonstrate the potential for spatial control over carboxylate anions in coordination chemistry.

[(NHC)Pd(OAc)2]: Highly Active Carboxylate Pd(II)-NHC (NHC = N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Precatalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura and Buchwald-Hartwig Cross-Coupling of Amides by N-C(O) Activation

In the past eight years, the selective cross-coupling of amides by N-C(O) bond activation has emerged as a highly attractive manifold for the manipulation of traditionally unreactive amide bonds. In this Special Issue on Next-Generation Cross-Coupling Chemistry, we report the Suzuki-Miyaura and Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling of amides by selective N-C(O) cleavage catalyzed by bench-stable, well-defined carboxylate Pd(II)-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) catalysts {[(NHC)Pd(O2CR)2]}. This class of Pd(II)-NHCs promotes cross-coupling under exceedingly mild room-temperature conditions owing to the facile dissociation of the carboxylate ligands to form the active complex. These readily accessible Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts show excellent functional group tolerance and are compatible with a broad range of amide activating groups. Considering the mild conditions for the cross-coupling and the facile access to carboxylate Pd(II)-NHC complexes, we anticipate that this class of bench-stable complexes will find wide application in the activation of amide N-C(O) and related acyl X-C(O) bonds.

Supramolecular Immobilization of Adamantyl and Carboxylate Modified N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand on Cucurbituril Substrates

Herein, the design, synthesis, supramolecular interactions and structural analysis of a novel bidentate carboxylate chelating N-heterocylic carbene (NHC) ligand is presented. The NHC structure was modified to strategically incorporate adamantyl moiety for the formation of a supramolecular complex with host molecules such as cucurbiturils. The adamantyl modified NHC ligand could potentially be used in recoverable homogeneous catalysts when Immobilized on a solid support via host–guest chemistry. As a versatile precursor, NHC ligand (8) was synthesized and characterized by ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, FTIR, single crystal x-ray crystallography and elemental analysis. A proof-of-principle non-covalent immobilization of the NHC ligand (8) with a Cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) host was demonstrated using ¹H-NMR titration.

Nickel-Catalyzed Hydroarylation of Alkynes under Reductive Conditions with Aryl Bromides and Water

An operationally simple nickel-catalyzed hydroarylation reaction for alkynes is described. This three-component coupling reaction utilizes commercially available alkynes and aryl bromides, along with water and Zn. An air-stable and easily synthesized Ni(II) precatalyst is the only entity used in the reaction that is not commercially available. This reductive cross-coupling reaction displays a fairly unusual anti selectivity when aryl bromides with ortho substituents are used. In addition to optimization data and a preliminary substrate scope, complementary experiments including deuterium labeling studies are used to provide a tentative catalytic mechanism. We believe this report should inspire and inform other Ni-catalyzed carbofunctionalization reactions.

Electron-poor hemilabile dicationic palladium NHC complexes - synthesis, structure and catalytic activity

We present a new class of dicationic palladium NHC complexes with two carbene ligands bearing different aryl substituents and a hemilabile pyrimidyl group. They can either be synthesized from the imidazolium salts via the silver transmetalation route to a halide-free palladium(ii) precursor or by direct deprotonation by palladium acetate. For four complexes we could determine their solid-state structures by X-ray diffraction experiments. Insight gained by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations revealed that in solution the two potentially bidentate ligands interchange between chelating and non-chelating coordination modes. The preference of these coordination modes is governed by the steric influence of the different ligands. The complexes were shown to be active catalysts for the hydroarylation of alkynes, and their performance was rationalized by DFT calculations.

Synthesis of chiral supramolecular bisphosphinite palladacycles through hydrogen transfer-promoted self-assembly process

P-Chiral secondary phosphine oxides react with Pd2(dba)3 in an acidic medium to provide chiral supramolecular bisphosphinite palladacycles through a H-transfer-based self-assembly process prior to SPO-promoted oxidative addition of an acid to a Pd(0) centre. The one-pot methodology allows variations of the X-type ligand as desired. Eight complexes have been characterised by X-ray diffraction.

Cyclopalladation in the Periphery of a NHC Ligand as the Crucial Step in the Synthesis of Highly Active Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Catalysts

Starting from 2,4-dichloropyrimidine, 4-(2-dialkylamino)pyrimidinyl functionalized mesitylimidazolium chlorides are accessible in a five-step reaction sequence. Two routes leading to palladium NHC complexes derived from these ligands have been worked out: By transmetalation with the corresponding NHC-AgCl complexes, C,N-coordinated palladium(II) complexes can be obtained. Treatment of palladium dichloride with the imidazolium salts in pyridine and in the presence of K₂ CO₃ gives cyclometalated and thus C,C-coordinated compounds. The reactivities of all these compounds were investigated in detail as well as their performance in the catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. It turned out that the C,C-coordinated derivatives exhibit high catalytic activities in the coupling of arylboronic acids with aryl chlorides, which is consistent with the generally accepted mechanistic ideas on substrate activation.

Ruthenium(II)/N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed [3+2] carbocyclization with aromatic N-H ketimines and internal alkynes

A convenient and highly efficient synthesis of indenamines has been developed via ruthenium-catalyzed [3+2] carbocyclization under very mild conditions. A catalyst system of Ru(II) π-allyl precursor and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand promotes facile coupling between aromatic N–H ketimines with internal alkynes at mild temperatures, without added oxidants or other metal salts, and in non-polar solvents. A proposed mechanism involves imine-directed activation of aromatic C–H bond, alkyne insertion, and carbocyclization by intramolecular imine insertion into Ru–alkenyl linkages.

Alkyne hydroarylation with Au N-heterocyclic carbene catalysts

Mono- and dinuclear gold complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been employed as catalysts in the intermolecular hydroarylation of alkynes with simple unfunctionalised arenes. Both mono- and dinuclear gold(III) complexes were able to catalyze the reaction; however, the best results were obtained with the mononuclear gold(I) complex IPrAuCl. This complex, activated with one equivalent of silver tetrafluoroborate, exhibited under acidic conditions at room temperature much higher catalytic activity and selectivity compared to more commonly employed palladium(II) catalysts. Moreover, the complex was active, albeit to a minor extent, even under neutral conditions, and exhibited lower activity but higher selectivity compared to the previously published complex AuCl(PPh(3)). Preliminary results on intramolecular hydroarylations using this catalytic system indicate, however, that alkyne hydration by traces of water may become a serious competing reaction.
