Abstract
AbstractThe ruthenium(II) complex cis-[RuCl2(PPh3)2(L1)] (1) where L1 = 2-(2’-pyridyl)quinoline was obtained in high yield from the reaction of [RuCl2(PPh3)3] with L1. The new compound was characterized by different spectroscopic methods including FT-IR, UV-Vis, NMR (1H, 31P) spectroscopy along with a mass spectrometric analysis (ESI-MS) and conductivity measurements. 31P NMR spectroscopy provided evidence that the two PPh3 ligands are orientated trans to each other in an octahedral environment. Complex (1) was tested in the transfer hydrogenation of various ketones in 2-propanol at 82 oC. The catalytic activity of (1) displayed quantitative conversions for benzophenone and 4-chloroacetophenone.

Abstract
Reaction of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) with dinuclear complexes [RuCl(dfppe)(μ-Cl)3Ru(dmso-S)3] (dfppe = 1,2-bis(dipentafluorophenyl phosphino)ethane (C6F5)2PCH2CH2P(C6F5)2; dmso = dimethyl sulfoxide) (1) or [RuCl(dfppe)(μ-Cl)3RuCl(dfppe)] (2) affords the mononuclear species trans-[RuCl2(bpy)(dfppe)] (3). Using this precursor complex (3), a series of new cationic Ru(II) electrophilic complexes [RuCl(L)(bpy)(dfppe)][Z] (L = P(OMe)3 (5), PMe3 (6), CH3CN (7), CO (8), H2O (9); Z = OTf (5, 6, 7, 8), BAr(F)4 (9) have been synthesized via abstraction of chloride by AgOTf or NaBAr(F)4 in the presence of L. Complexes 5 and 6 were converted into the corresponding isomeric hydride derivatives [RuH(PMe3)(bpy)(dfppe)][OTf] (10a, 10b) and [RuH(P(OMe)3)(bpy)(dfppe)][OTf] (11a, 11b) respectively, when treated with NaBH4. Protonation of the cationic monohydride complex (11a) with HOTf at low temperatures resulted in H2 evolution accompanied by the formation of either solvent or triflate bound six coordinated species [Ru(S)(P(OMe)3)(bpy)(dfppe)][OTf]n [(S = solvent (n = 2), triflate (n = 1)] (13a/13b); these species have not been isolated and could not be established with certainty. They (13a/13b) were not isolated, instead the six-coordinated isomeric aqua complexes cis-[Ru(bpy)(dfppe)(OH2)(P(OMe)3)][OTf]2 (14a/14b) were isolated. Reaction of the aqua complexes (14a/14b) with 1 atm of H2 at room temperature in acetone-d6 solvent resulted in heterolytic cleavage of the H-H bond. Results of the studies on H2 lability and heterolytic activation using these complexes are discussed. The complexes 3, 5, 11a, and 14a have been structurally characterized.

Abstract
New ruthenium(II) mononuclear complexes of the type [RuCl2(PPh3)2(η(2)-triamine)] (2) [RuCl(PPh3)2(η(3)-triamine)]Cl (5) (triemine=N(1)-(2-aminoethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine) have been synthesized by reacting [RuCl2(PPh3)3] (1) with one mole equivalent of N(1)-(2-aminoethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine in dichloromethane. Reaction of (2) with half-equivalent of (PhCN)2PdCl2 or Pd(OAc)2 in dichloromethane as a solvent afforded two novel heterotrimetallic Ru(II)-Pd(II)-Ru(II) complexes, [Ru(II)Cl2(PPh3)2(triamine)]2[Pd(II)X2](X=Cl, OAc) (3 and 4), bearing bioactive ligand. The progress of the undertaken reactions was monitored by (31)P{1H} NMR and FTIR. Crystal structure of complex 2 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The absorption spectrum of 2 in dichloromethane was modeled by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The in vitro antimicrobial studies of complex 2-5 against an array of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) were conducted. Complexes 3 and 4 exhibit high dual antibacterial and antifungal activity inhibiting microorganisms possibly via hydrolytic pathway which further evidenced by electrochemical analyses. The complexes 3 and 4 show a high inhibitory activity at 200 μg/ml concentration, suggesting that complexes 3 and 4 are two efficient catalytic inhibitor of microorganisms and further, they should be tested against cancer strains.

Three complexes of the general formula trans/cis-[Ru((II))(dppme)(N-N)Cl2] {dppme is H2C=C(CH2PPh2)2 and N-N is 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (trans/cis-(1)) and 1-methyl-1,2-diaminopropane (trans-(2)} were obtained by reacting trans-[RuCl2(dppme)2] with an excess amount of corresponding diamine in CH2Cl2 as a solvent. The complexes were characterized by an elemental analysis, IR, (1)H, (13)C and (31)P{1H} NMR, FAB-MS and UV-visible. The trans-(1) (kinetic product) readily isomerizes to the cis-(1) (thermodynamic product) and this process was followed by using (31)P{(1)H} NMR, cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical studies on complex (1) reveal that the Ru(III)/Ru(II) couples are sensitive to the isomer (trans/cis) formed. The cis-(1) was confirmed by X-ray structure and (31)P{(1)H} NMR. Transfer-hydrogenation reactions for reduction of trans-4-phenyl-3-butene-2-one were conducted using complexes trans/cis-(1) and trans-(2). The electronic spectra of cis/trans-(1) in dichloromethane were calculated with the use of time-dependent DFT methods.

Abstract
Thermal reactions between [RuCl2(diene)]n (diene = 2,5-norbornadiene, nbd; 1,5-cyclooctadiene, cod) with an excess of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylene diamine (tmeda) afforded derivatives [RuCl2(diene)(tmeda)] (diene = nbd, 1; cod, 2) as a mixture of cis and trans isomers. When thermolysis was performed under H2 mixtures of hydride species [RuCl(H)(diene)(tmeda)] (diene = nbd, 3; cod, 4) and the bis-tmeda adduct trans-[RuCl2(tmeda)2] (5) were obtained in different ratios depending upon the reaction conditions and reaction times. Heating polymeric Ru(II) precursors in toluene in the presence of a 5-fold excess of the bulkier N,N,N',N'-tetraethylethylene diamine (teeda) resulted in a rare diamine dealkylation process with formation of trans-[RuCl2(nbd)(Et2NCH2CH2NHEt)] (6) and trans-[RuCl2(cod)(EtHNCH2CH2NHEt)] (7) in high yields. The presence of N-H functionalities in the coordinated diamine ligands of 6 and 7 was unambiguously established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The dealkylation process of the teeda ligand seems to proceed intramolecularly as shown by solution NMR studies performed with the soluble Ru(II) precursors trans-[RuCl2(amine)2(diene)] (diene = nbd, amine = morpholine, 9; diene = cod, amine = Et2NH, 10). The above complexes [RuCl2(diene)(diamine)] have been tested as precatalysts in the hydrogenation of ketones both for transfer as well as direct hydrogenation, the latter route being the most effective.
