Abstract
Heterobimetallic complexes are studied for their ability to mimic biological systems as well as active sites in heterogeneous catalysts. While specific interest in early/late heterobimetallic systems has fluctuated, they serve as important models to fundamentally understand metal-metal bonding. Specifically, the polarized metal-metal multiple bonds formed in highly reduced early/late heterobimetallic complexes exemplify how each metal modulates the electronic environment and reactivity of the complex as a whole. In this Perspective, we chronicle the development of phosphinoamide-supported group IV/cobalt heterobimetallic complexes. This combination of metals allows access to a low valent Co-I center, which performs a rich variety of bond activation reactions when coupled with the pendent Lewis acidic metal center. Conversely, the low valent late transition metal is also observed to act as an electron reservoir, allowing for redox processes to occur at the d0 group IV metal site. Most of the bond activation reactions carried out by phosphinoamide-bridged M/Co-I (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) complexes are facilitated by cleavage of metal-metal multiple bonds, which serve as readily accessible electron reservoirs. Comparative studies in which both the number of buttressing ligands as well as the identity of the early metal were varied to give a library of heterobimetallic complexes are summarized, providing a thorough understanding of the reactivity of M/Co-I heterobimetallic systems.

Abstract
A geometrically flexible bifunctional (bis)aminophosphine ligand was synthesized in a three-component, one-pot Kabachnik-Fields reaction using tert butylphosphine, paraformaldehyde, and 3,5-dimethyl aniline. The product, bis((3,5-dimethylphenyl)aminomethyl) tert butylphosphine (ArBiAMP t Bu), containing two secondary amines and a tertiary phosphine, was isolated in good yields. Deprotonation of both N-H groups with (trimethylsilyl)methylpotassium (K-CH2SiMe3), followed by salt metathesis with LaI3, YI3, and LuI3 generated the corresponding MI(ArBiAMP t Bu)(thf)3 complexes (M = Y (1), La (2), and Lu (3)) in good yields. A sterically encumbered indene, 1,3-diisopropyl-4,7-dimethyl-1H-indene, iPrMeInd, was deprotonated in situ and installed via salt-metathesis to generate the organometallic series of η5-indenide complexes, M(ArBiAMP t Bu)(η5-iPrMeInd)(thf) (M = Y (4), La (5), and Lu (6)). 1H, 31P, 13C, and 89Y NMR experiments, IR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), were used to characterize these complexes. The Y-P coupling constant was found to be variable depending on the modifiable coordination environment of the metal center, indicating potential as both a spectroscopic handle as well as providing insight into the influence of additional ligands on the metal center.

Abstract
Constructing pH-responsive smart material provides a new opportunity to address the problem that traditional electrocatalysts cannot achieve both alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities. In this study, amphoteric conjugated ligand (2-aminoterephthalic acid, BDC-NH2 )-modified 3d metal-anchored graphitic carbon nitride (3d metal-C3 N4 ) smart electrocatalysts are constructed, and self-adaptation of the electronic structure is realized by self-response to pH stimulation, which results in self-adjustment of alkaline OER and acidic HER. Specifically, the amino and carboxyl functional groups in BDC-NH2 undergo protonation and deprotonation respectively under different pH stimulation to adapt to environmental changes. Through DFT calculations, the increase or decrease of electron delocalization range brought by the self-response characteristic is found to lead to redistribution of the Bader charge around the modified active sites. The OER and HER activities are greatly promoted roughly 4.8 and 8.5 times over Co-C3 N4 after BDC-NH2 -induced self-adaptive processes under different environments, arising from the reduced energy barrier of O* to OOH* and ΔGH* . Impressively, the proposed BDC-NH2 -induced smart regulation strategy is applicable to a series of 3d metal anchors for C3 N4 , including Co, Ni and Fe, providing a general structural upgrading method for constructing smart electrocatalytic systems.

Abstract
Metalation of β-diketiminato rare-earth metal complexes LnacnacLn(PhNCH2PPh2)2 (Ln = Y, Yb, Lu) with (COD)Pd(CH2SiMe3)2 afforded three-coordinate Pd(0) complexes supported by two sterically less bulky phosphines and a Pd → Ln dative interaction. The Pd(0) center is prone to ligation with isonitrile and CO; in the latter case, the insertion of a second CO with the Y-N bond was assisted via a precoordination of CO on the Pd(0) center, which led to the formation of an anionic Pd(0) carbamoyl. The reaction of the Pd-Y complex with iodobenzene showed a remarkable double P-C bond cleavage-formation pathway within the heterobimetallic Pd-Y core to afford (Ph3P)2PdI(Ph), imine PhNCH2, and a β-diketiminato yttrium diiodide. In the related reaction of LnacnacY(PhNCH2PPh2)2 with (Ph3P)2PdI(Ph), the P-C bond cleavage following with a N-C bond formation was observed. Computational studies revealed a synergetic bimetallic mechanism for these reactions.

Abstract
The dative Pd→B interaction in a series of R DPBR' Pd0 and PdII complexes (R DPBR' =(o-PR2 C6 H4 )2 BR', diphosphinoborane) was analyzed using XRD, 11 B NMR spectroscopy and NBO/NLMO calculations. The borane acceptor discriminates between the oxidation state PdII and Pd0 , stabilizing the latter. Reaction of lithium amides with [(R DPBR' )PdII (4-NO2 C6 H4 )I] chemoselectively yields the C-N coupling product. DFT modelling indicates no significant impact of PdII →B coordination on the inner-sphere reductive elimination rate.

Abstract
The synthesis of the metalloligand Ta(κ2-NP)3Cl2 (NP = 2-diphenylphosphinopyrrolide) and its coordination chemistry with group 9 and 10 metals is reported. Treatment of Ta(κ2-NP)3Cl2 with group 9 and 10 metals resulted in clean formation of the heterobimetallic complexes Cl2Ta(μ2-NP)3M (M = Ni (2), Pd (3)) or Cl2Ta(μ2-NP)3MCl (M = Rh (4), Ir (5)). Each pair of complexes is isostructural and contains three phosphinopyrrolide ligands that bridge the metal centers. The d10 or d8 complexes are all diamagnetic and X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals similarly short metal-metal distances, ranging from 2.2979(5) Å to 2.4366(2) Å. Despite the similar bonding metrics in 2-5, treatment with an L type donor (2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide (CNXylyl)) reveals 3 different coordination geometries in TaNi(CNXylyl) (6), TaPd(CNXylyl) (7), and TaIr(CNXylyl) (8). While complexes 6, 7, and 8 all bind the isocyanide at the late metal, ligand rearrangements are observed in the first row complex 6. Complex 7 binds the isocyanide in the axial position while equatorial binding is observed in 8. All isocyanide adducts maintain close metal-metal contacts in the solid state.

Abstract
Significant progress has been made in the past 10-15 years on the design, synthesis, and properties of multimetallic coordination complexes with heterometallic metal-metal bonds that are paramagnetic. Several general classes have been explored including heterobimetallic compounds, heterotrimetallic compounds of either linear or triangular geometry, discrete molecular compounds containing a linear array of more than three metal atoms, and coordination polymers with a heterometallic metal-metal bonded backbone. We focus in this Review on the synthetic methods employed to access these compounds, their structural features, magnetic properties, and electronic structure. Regarding the metal-metal bond distances, we make use of the formal shortness ratio (FSR) for comparison of bond distances between a broad range of metal atoms of different sizes. The magnetic properties of these compounds can be described using an extension of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules to cases where two magnetic ions interact via a third metal atom. In describing the electronic structure, we focus on the ability (or not) of electrons to be delocalized across heterometallic bonds, allowing for rationalizations and predictions of single-molecule conductance measurements in paramagnetic heterometallic molecular wires.

Abstract
By reaction of MCl4 (M = Zr, Hf) with 2 equiv. of [(Mes2AsNPh){Li(OEt2)2}], the first group 4 metal arsinoamide complexes [(Mes2AsNPh)2MCl2(THF)] were synthesized. They feature two weak M-As interactions. After formally replacing the chloride atoms by the amido ligands [NMe2]-, a more diverse M-As interaction arises in [(Mes2AsNPh)2M(NMe2)2]: only one M-As contact can be observed with a substantially shorter distance. This type of interaction may originate from the steric effect of the substituents on the metal center. In addition, the coordination behavior of arsinoamide in main group metal chemistry was investigated. Thus, arsinoamide complexes of Al(iii), In(iii), Sn(ii) and Pb(ii) are reported. In contrast to the group 4 complexes, no M-As interaction can be detected in these four complexes.

Abstract
The synthesis of a full series of group 4/nickel complexes supported by a 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyrrolide (NP) ligand is reported. Treatment of the homoleptic, 8-coordinate M(NP)4 monometallic precursors with Ni(COD)2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) yielded the heterobimetallic complexes (κ(2)-NP)M(μ2-NP)3Ni (M = Ti, Zr, Hf). Although X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals similarly short metal-metal distances in all three complexes, quantum chemical calculations indicate that ZrNi () and HfNi () contain only single Ni → M dative bonds while TiNi () has an additional Ti-Ni π-bond. All three complexes have quasireversible reductions by cyclic voltammetry, and 1-electron chemical reduction of by Na(Hg) yields the anion, [Na][(κ(2)-NP)Ti(μ2-NP)3Ni] (). X-ray and computational analysis indicate that the 1-electron reduction of completely breaks the metal-metal bond, yielding a formally Ti(III)-Ni(0) complex. Ti-Ni bonding can also be disrupted by coordination of CO, wherein Ni → CO backbonding effectively outcompetes Ni → Ti dative bonding.

Abstract
Alfred Werner, who pioneered the field of coordination chemistry, envisioned coordination complexes as a single, transition metal atom at the epicenter of a vast ligand space. The idea that the locus of a coordination complex could be shared by multiple metals held together with covalent bonds would eventually lead to the discovery of the quadruple and quintuple bond, which have no analogues outside of the transition metal block. Metal-metal bonding can be classified into homometallic and heterometallic groups. Although the former is dominant, the latter is arguably more intriguing because of the inherently larger chemical space in which metal-metal bonding can be explored. In 2013, Lu and Thomas independently reported the isolation of heterometallic multiple bonds with exclusively first-row transition metals. Structural and theoretical data supported triply bonded Fe-Cr and Fe-V cores. This Account describes our continued efforts to configure bonds between first-row transition metals from titanium to copper. Double-decker ligands, or binucleating platforms that brace two transition metals in proximity, have enabled the modular synthesis of diverse metal-metal complexes. The resulting complexes are also ideal for investigating the effects of an "ancillary" metal on the properties and reactivities of an "active" metal center. A total of 38 bimetallic complexes have been compiled comprising 18 unique metal-metal pairings. Twenty-one of these bimetallics are strictly isostructural, allowing for a systematic comparison of metal-metal bonding. The nature of the chemical bond between first-row metals is remarkably variable and depends on two primary factors: the total d-electron count, and the metals' relative d-orbital energies. Showcasing the range of covalent bonding are a quintuply bonded (d-d)(10) Mn-Cr heterobimetallic and the singly bonded late-late pairings, e.g., Fe-Co, which adopt unusually high spin states. A long-term goal is to rationally tailor the properties and reactivities of the bimetallic complexes. In some cases, synergistic redox and magnetic properties were found that are different from the expected sum of the individual metals. Intermetal charge transfer was shown in a Co-M series, for M = Mn to Cu, where the transition energy decreases as M is varied across the first-row period. The potential of using metal-metal complexes for multielectron reduction of small-molecules is addressed by N2 binding studies and a mechanistic study of a dicobalt catalyst in reductive silylation of N2 to N(SiMe3)3. Finally, metal-ion exchange reactions with metal-metal complexes can be selective under appropriate reaction conditions, providing an alternative synthetic route to metal-metal species.

Abstract
A Ti/Co heterobimetallic complex featuring a very short metal–metal triple bond has been synthesized. This complex promotes the reductive coupling reaction of aryl ketones into alkenes.
To explore metal–metal multiple bonds between first row transition metals, Ti/Co complexes supported by two phosphinoamide ligands have been synthesized and characterized. The Ti metalloligand Cl2Ti(XylNPiPr2)2 (1) was treated with CoI2 under reducing conditions, permitting isolation of the Ti/Co complex [(μ-Cl)Ti(XylNPiPr2)2CoI]2 (2). One electron reduction of complex 2 affords ClTi(XylNPiPr2)2CoPMe3 (3), which features a metal–metal triple bond and an unprecedentedly short Ti–Co distance of 2.0236(9) Å. This complex is shown to promote the McMurry coupling reaction of aryl ketones into alkenes, with concomitant formation of the tetranuclear complex [Ti(μ3-O)(NXylPiPr2)2CoI]2 (4). Abstract
Treatment of [FeCp(CO)2Cl] with 1 equiv of the amidophosphine ligands Li[R2PNR'] (R = Ph, iPr, R' = iPr, tBu, Cy) afforded complexes of the type [FeCp(CO)(κ2(C,P)-(C = O)-NiPr-PPh2)] (1a), [FeCp(CO)(κ2(C,P)-(C = O)-NtBu-PPh2)] (1b), and [FeCp(CO)(κ2(C,P)-(C = O)-NCy-PiPr2)] (1c) in 40-50% yields. Complex 1a was also formed when [FeCp(CO)2(PPh2NHiPr)]+ (2) was reacted with 1 equiv of KOtBu. These complexes feature a four-membered carboxamido-phospha-ferracycle as a result of an intramolecular nucleophilic attack of the amidophosphine ligand on coordinated CO. Upon treatment of 1a with the electrophile [Me3O]BF4 the aminocarbene complex [FeCp(CO)(κ2(C,P) = C(OMe)-NiPr-PPh2)]+ (3) was obtained bearing an aza-phospha-carbene moiety. Upon treatment of cis,trans,cis-[Fe(CO)2(Ph2PNHiPr)2(Br)2] (4a) and cis,trans,cis-[Fe(CO)2(Ph2PNHtBu)2(Br)2] (4b) with KOtBu the carboxamido-phospha-ferracycles trans-[Fe(CO)2(κ2(C,P)-(C = O)-NiPr-PPh2)(Ph2PNHiPr)Br] (5a) and trans-[Fe(CO)2(κ2(C,P)-(C = O)-NtBu-PPh2)(Ph2PNHtBu)Br] (5b) were formed in moderate yield. Finally, representative structures were determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
We report here the syntheses, X-ray crystal structures, electrochemistry, and density functional theory (DFT) single-point calculations of three new complexes: tetrakis(monothiosuccinimidato)dimolybdenum(II) [Mo2(SNO5)4, 1a], tetrakis(6-thioxo-2-piperidinonato)dimolybdenum(II) [Mo2(SNO6)4, 1b], and chlorotetrakis(monothiosuccinimidato)pyridinelithiumdimolybdenum(II) [pyLiMo2(SNO5)4Cl, 2-py]. X-ray crystallography shows unusually short axial Mo2-Cl bond lengths in 2-py, 2.6533(6) Å, and dimeric 2-dim, 2.644(1) Å, which we propose result from an increased Lewis acidity of the Mo2 unit in the presence of the proximal Li(+) ion. When 2-py is dissolved in MeCN, the lithium reversibly dissociates, forming an equilibrium mixture of (MeCNLiMo2(SNO5)4Cl) (2-MeCN) and [Li(MeCN)4](+)[Mo2(SNO5)4Cl](-) (3). Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the equilibrium lithium binding constant (room temperature, K(eq) = 95 ± 1). From analysis of the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant, thermodynamic parameters for the formation of 2-MeCN from 3 (ΔH° = -6.96 ± 0.93 kJ mol(-1) and ΔS° = 13.9 ± 3.5 J mol(-1) K(-1)) were extracted. DFT calculations indicate that Li(+) affects the Mo-Cl bond length through polarization of metal-metal bonding/antibonding molecular orbitals when lithium and chloride are added to the dimolybdenum core.

Abstract
The heterobimetallic complexes [Mn((i)PrNPPh(2))(3)Cu((i)PrNHPPh(2))] (1) and [Fe((i)PrNPPh(2))(3)Cu((i)PrNHPPh(2))] (2) have been synthesized by the one pot reaction of LiN(i)PrPPh(2), MCl(2) (M = Mn, Fe), and CuI in high yield. Addition of excess CuI into 2 or directly to the reaction mixture led to the formation of a heterotrimetallic [Fe((i)PrNPPh(2))(3)Cu(2)((i)PrNPPh(2))] (3) in good yield. Complexes 1-3 have been characterized by means of elemental analysis, paramagnetic (1)H NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and single crystal X-ray analysis. In all three complexes, Mn or Fe are in the +2 oxidation state and have a high spin electron configuration, as evidenced by solution Evans' method. In addition, the oxidation state of Fe in complex 3 is confirmed by zero-field (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. X-ray crystallography reveals that the three coordinate Mn/Fe centers in the zwitterionic complexes 1-3 adopt an unusual trigonal planar geometry.

Abstract
To assess the effect of dative M-->M interactions on redox properties in early/late heterobimetallic complexes, a series of Co/Zr complexes supported by phosphinoamide ligands have been synthesized and characterized. Treatment of the Zr metalloligands (Ph(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)ZrCl (1), ((i)Pr(2)PNMes)(3)ZrCl (2), and ((i)Pr(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)ZrCl (3) with CoI(2) leads to reduction from Co(II) to Co(I) and isolation of the heterobimetallic complexes ICo(Ph(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)ZrCl (4), ICo((i)Pr(2)PNMes)(3)ZrCl (5), and ICo((i)Pr(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)ZrCl (6), respectively. Interestingly, treatment of CoI(2) with the phosphinoamine Ph(2)PNH(i)Pr in the absence of a bound Zr center leads to the disubstituted Co(II) complex (Ph(2)PNH(i)Pr)(2)CoI(2) (7). The tris(phosphinoamine) Co(I) complex (Ph(2)PNH(i)Pr)(3)CoI (8) can only be generated in the presence of an added reductant such as Zn(0), indicating that the reduction of Co(II) to Co(I) only occurs in the presence of Zr in the formation of complexes 4-6. Structural characterization of 4-6 reveals a Zr-Co interaction, with interatomic distances of 2.7315(5) A, 2.6280(5) A, and 2.6309(5) A, respectively. This distance appears to decrease as the phosphine donors on Co become more electron-releasing, strengthening the dative Co-->Zr interaction. Cyclic voltammetry of 4-6 shows that all three compounds can be further reduced by two electrons at relatively mild reduction potentials (-1.65 V to -2.07 V vs Fc/Fc(+)). The potentials at which these reductions occur in each of these complexes are largely governed by the extent to which electron-density is donated to Zr, as well as the electron-donating ability of the phosphine substituents. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry of complex 8 reveals that in the absence of Zr, the Co center is significantly more electron rich, and thus more difficult to reduce. Chemical reduction of 5 leads to the isolation of the two-electron reduced dinitrogen complex [N(2)Co((i)Pr(2)PNMes)(3)ZrX][Na(THF)(5)] (9). X-ray crystallography of 9 reveals that two-electron reduction is accompanied by a significant contraction of the Co-Zr interatomic distance from 2.6280(5) A to 2.4112(3) A. These heterobimetallic complexes have been studied computationally using density functional theory to examine the nature of the metal-metal interactions in these species.
