Heterobi- and Heterotrimetallic Transition Metal Complexes with Carbon-Rich Bridging Units

Synthesis and Luminescence Studies of a Tethered, Trigonal, Silver(I) Tris(alkyne) Complex

The synthesis and characterization of a tris(alkyne) ligand, tris[2-(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl-4-tert-butylbenzyl]amine (1), and its silver(I) hexafluorophosphate complex, 1-Ag, are reported. The solid-state structure and luminescence properties of 1-Ag indicate relatively strong silver(I)-alkyne interactions between the metal cation and 1. No significant changes in the bond angles or lengths were observed upon metalation of 1 with Ag+, indicating a relatively unstrained ligand-metal motif. The luminescence properties of 1 and 1-Ag are also disclosed, showing attenuation in the luminescence intensity upon Ag+ metalation, with Stokes shifts of ∼3700 and ∼3200 cm-1 for 1 and 1-Ag, respectively. The lifetimes of 1-Ag (τ1 = 8.383 ± 0.053 ns and τ2 = 4.665 ± 0.061 ns) were longer than those of 1 (τ1 = 6.708 ± 0.085 ns and τ2 = 3.689 ± 0.025 ns), possibly indicating multiple conformers of 1-Ag in solution. This new silver alkyne platform has potential applications in studies of catalysis, luminescent compounds, and sensing.

The stepwise generation of multimetallic complexes based on a vinylbipyridine linkage and their photophysical properties

The versatile rhenium complex [ReCl(CO)₃(bpyC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)] (HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]Cbpy = 5-ethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine) is used to generate a series of bimetallic complexes through the hydrometallation of [MHCl(CO)(BTD)(PPh₃)₂] (M = Ru, Os; BTD = 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole). The ruthenium complex [Ru{CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-bpyReCl(CO)₃}Cl(BTD)(CO)(PPh₃)₂] was characterised structurally. Ligand exchange reactions with bifunctional linkers bearing oxygen and sulfur donors provide access to tetra- and pentametallic complexes such as [{M{CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-bpyReCl(CO)₃}(CO)(PPh₃)₂}₂(S₂CNC₄H₈NCS₂)] and Fe[C₅H₄CO₂M{CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-bpyReCl(CO)₃}(CO)(PPh₃)₂]₂. The effect of the group 8 metal on the photophysical properties of the rhenium centre was investigated using the complexes [Ru{CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-bpyReCl(CO)₃}Cl(BTD)(CO)(PPh₃)₂] and [M{CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-bpyReCl(CO)₃}{S₂P(OEt)₂}(CO)(PPh₃)₂] (M = Ru, Os). This revealed the quenching of the rhenium-based emission in favour of weak radiative processes based on the Ru and Os centres. The potential for exploiting this effect is illustrated by the reaction of [Ru{CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-bpyReCl(CO)₃}Cl(CO)(BTD)(PPh₃)₂] with carbon monoxide, which results in a 5-fold fluorescence enhancement in the dicarbonyl product, [Ru{CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-bpyReCl(CO)₃}Cl(CO)₂(PPh₃)₂], as the quenching effect is disrupted.

5-Ferrocenyl-2,2′-bipyridine ligands: synthesis, palladium(ii) and copper(i) complexes, optical and electrochemical properties

Two 5-ferrocenyl-2,2′-bipyridine ligands were synthesised using the palladium(0) catalysed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Palladium(ii) and copper(i) complexes of these ligands were synthesised and the optical and electrochemical properties of the complexes were compared to those of the “free” ligands.

Heterometallic platinum(II) compounds with β-aminoethylferrocenes: synthesis, electrochemical behaviour and anticancer activity

A new family of heterometallic compounds 3-6 containing ferrocenyl and platinum(II) centers has been synthesized by reaction of 1-β-aminoethylferrocene (1) and 1,1'-bis(β-aminoethyl)ferrocene (2) with Pt(II) precursors. Using K(2)[PtCl(4)] as the Pt(II) source, the cis-square-planar neutral compounds [Fe{η(5)-C(5)H(4)(CH(2))(2)NH(2)}(2)PtCl(2)] (3) and [{Fe(η(5)-C(5)H(4)(CH(2))(2)NH(2))(η(5)-C(5)H(5))}(2)PtCl(2)] (5) were obtained. Reaction of cis-[PtCl(2)(dmso)(2)] with 1 and 2 resulted in the displacement of dmso and chloride ligands from the platinum coordination sphere, affording the cationic and neutral compounds [Fe{η(5)-C(5)H(4)(CH(2))(2)NH(2)}(2)Pt(dmso)Cl]Cl (4) and [Fe(η(5)-C(5)H(4)(CH(2))(2)NH(2))(η(5)-C(5)H(5))Pt(dmso)Cl(2)] (6). Compounds 3-6 were thoroughly characterized using multinuclear ((1)H, (13)C, (195)Pt) NMR, IR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of heterometallic 6 confirmed the cis geometry of the molecule and revealed that the platinum atom is held in a perfect square-planar geometry. The electrochemical behaviour of the heterometallic compounds 3-6, which has been examined by cyclic (CV) and square wave (SWV) voltammetries in dichloromethane and dmso solution, is characterized by the reversible one-electron oxidation of the ferrocene moieties. The results of the biological activity studies revealed that the organometallic complex 5 is active against all cell lines with GI(50) values in the range 1.7-2.3 μM. When compared to the standard anticancer drug cisplatin, heterotrimetallic 5, possessing two aminoethylferrocenyl units coordinated to the Pt(II) center, showed a greater activity profile in the colon cancer cell line. Cell cycle studies revealed that the new mixed compound exhibits a mechanism of action different to cisplatin.

Metal-rich organometallics

The scope of organometallics has recently been expanded considerably, when researchers have started to employ these compounds in the context of materials chemistry. Traditionally, organometallic complexes have been and continue to be important tools for many (catalytic) chemical transformations. This perspective highlights how metal-rich organometallics, that is compounds with more than one type of metal, can play an important role in the advancement of new value-added functional materials.
