Structure Determination of Unsolvated Potassium, Rubidium, and Cesium Carbazolates

Heavy Alkali Metal Manganate Complexes: Synthesis, Structures and Solvent-Induced Dissociation Effects

Rare examples of heavier alkali metal manganates [{(AM)Mn(CH2 SiMe3 )(N'Ar )2 }∞ ] (AM=K, Rb, or Cs) [N'Ar =N(SiMe3 )(Dipp), where Dipp=2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ] have been synthesised with the Rb and Cs examples crystallographically characterised. These heaviest manganates crystallise as polymeric zig-zag chains propagated by AM⋅⋅⋅π-arene interactions. Key to their preparation is to avoid Lewis base donor solvents. In contrast, using multidentate nitrogen donors encourages ligand scrambling leading to redistribution of these bimetallic manganate compounds into their corresponding homometallic species as witnessed for the complete Li - Cs series. Adding to the few known crystallographically characterised unsolvated and solvated rubidium and caesium s-block metal amides, six new derivatives ([{AM(N'Ar )}∞ ], [{AM(N'Ar )⋅TMEDA}∞ ], and [{AM(N'Ar )⋅PMDETA}∞ ] where AM=Rb or Cs) have been structurally authenticated. Utilising monodentate diethyl ether as a donor, it was also possible to isolate and crystallographically characterise sodium manganate [(Et2 O)2 Na(n Bu)Mn[(N'Ar )2 ], a monomeric, dinuclear structure prevented from aggregating by two blocking ether ligands bound to sodium.

Synthesis and Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization of a New Norbornene Dicarboximide with a Pendant Carbazole Moiety

A new norbornene dicarboximide presenting a pendant carbazole moiety linked by a p-methylene benzyl spacer is synthesized. This carbazole-functionalized monomer is polymerized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization using Grubbs third-generation catalyst. Microstructural analysis of resulting polymers performed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) shows that they are stereoirregular. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and thermal (DSC) analysis indicate that polymers are also amorphous. With respect to the fluorescence analysis, both solution and film polymer samples exhibit only “normal structured” carbazole fluorescence, while excimer formation by overlap of carbazole groups is not detected.

Photoinduced, Copper-Catalyzed Alkylation of Amines: A Mechanistic Study of the Cross-Coupling of Carbazole with Alkyl Bromides

We have recently reported that a variety of couplings of nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and carbon nucleophiles with organic halides can be achieved under mild conditions (-40 to 30 °C) through the use of light and a copper catalyst. Insight into the various mechanisms by which these reactions proceed may enhance our understanding of chemical reactivity and facilitate the development of new methods. In this report, we apply an array of tools (EPR, NMR, transient absorption, and UV-vis spectroscopy; ESI-MS; X-ray crystallography; DFT calculations; reactivity, stereochemical, and product studies) to investigate the photoinduced, copper-catalyzed coupling of carbazole with alkyl bromides. Our observations are consistent with pathways wherein both an excited state of the copper(I) carbazolide complex ([Cu^I(carb)₂]^-) and an excited state of the nucleophile (Li(carb)) can serve as photoreductants of the alkyl bromide. The catalytically dominant pathway proceeds from the excited state of Li(carb), generating a carbazyl radical and an alkyl radical. The cross-coupling of these radicals is catalyzed by copper via an out-of-cage mechanism in which [Cu^I(carb)₂]^- and [Cu^II(carb)₃]^- (carb = carbazolide), both of which have been identified under coupling conditions, are key intermediates, and [Cu^II(carb)₃]^- serves as the persistent radical that is responsible for predominant cross-coupling. This study underscores the versatility of copper(II) complexes in engaging with radical intermediates that are generated by disparate pathways, en route to targeted bond constructions.

Structural Diversity in Alkali Metal and Alkali Metal Magnesiate Chemistry of the Bulky 2,6-Diisopropyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)anilino Ligand

Bulky amido ligands are precious in s-block chemistry, since they can implant complementary strong basic and weak nucleophilic properties within compounds. Recent work has shown the pivotal importance of the base structure with enhancement of basicity and extraordinary regioselectivities possible for cyclic alkali metal magnesiates containing mixed n-butyl/amido ligand sets. This work advances alkali metal and alkali metal magnesiate chemistry of the bulky arylsilyl amido ligand [N(SiMe3 )(Dipp)]- (Dipp=2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ). Infinite chain structures of the parent sodium and potassium amides are disclosed, adding to the few known crystallographically characterised unsolvated s-block metal amides. Solvation by N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) or N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) gives molecular variants of the lithium and sodium amides; whereas for potassium, PMDETA gives a molecular structure, TMEDA affords a novel, hemi-solvated infinite chain. Crystal structures of the first magnesiate examples of this amide in [MMg{N(SiMe3 )(Dipp)}2 (μ-nBu)]∞ (M=Na or K) are also revealed, though these breakdown to their homometallic components in donor solvents as revealed through NMR and DOSY studies.

Extremely bulky amide ligands in main group chemistry

The development of extremely sterically demanding, monodentate amide ligands facilitates the isolation of main group species with new and highly reactive coordination modes. An outstanding feature of these ligands is the ability to tune their steric demands. Reactivity investigations highlight the potential for small molecule activation chemistry and catalysis for these compounds.

Tuning coordination in s-block carbazol-9-yl complexes

1,3,6,8-Tetra-tert-butylcarbazol-9-yl and 1,8-diaryl-3,6-di(tert-butyl)carbazol-9-yl ligands have been utilized in the synthesis of potassium and magnesium complexes. The potassium complexes (1,3,6,8-tBu4carb)K(THF)4 (1; carb = C12H4N), [(1,8-Xyl2-3,6-tBu2carb)K(THF)]2 (2; Xyl = 3,5-Me2C6H3) and (1,8-Mes2-3,6-tBu2carb)K(THF)2 (3; Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) were reacted with MgI2 to give the Hauser bases 1,3,6,8-tBu4carbMgI(THF)2 (4) and 1,8-Ar2-3,6-tBu2carbMgI(THF) (Ar = Xyl 5, Ar = Mes 6). Structural investigations of the potassium and magnesium derivatives highlight significant differences in the coordination motifs, which depend on the nature of the 1- and 8-substituents: 1,8-di(tert-butyl)-substituted ligands gave π-type compounds (1 and 4), in which the carbazolyl ligand acts as a multi-hapto donor, with the metal cations positioned below the coordination plane in a half-sandwich conformation, whereas the use of 1,8-diaryl substituted ligands gave σ-type complexes (2 and 6). Space-filling diagrams and percent buried volume calculations indicated that aryl-substituted carbazolyl ligands offer a steric cleft better suited to stabilization of low-coordinate magnesium complexes.
