Abstract
HNO (nitroxyl, azanone), joined the 'biologically relevant reactive nitrogen species' family in the 2000s. Azanone is impossible to store due to its high reactivity and inherent low stability. Consequently, its chemistry and effects are studied using donor compounds, which release this molecule in solution and in the gas phase upon stimulation. Researchers have also tried to stabilize this elusive species and its conjugate base by coordination to metal centers using several ligands, like metalloporphyrins and pincer ligands. Given HNO's high reactivity and short lifetime, several different strategies have been proposed for its detection in chemical and biological systems, such as colorimetric methods, EPR, HPLC, mass spectrometry, fluorescent probes, and electrochemical analysis. These approaches are described and critically compared. Finally, in the last ten years, several advances regarding the possibility of endogenous HNO generation were made; some of them are also revised in the present work.

Abstract
The catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide holds immense promise for applications in sustainable fuel synthesis and hydrogen storage. Mechanistic studies that connect thermodynamic parameters with the kinetics of catalysis can provide new understanding and guide predictive design of improved catalysts. Reported here are thermochemical and kinetic analyses of a new pincer-ligated rhenium complex (tBuPOCOP)Re(CO)2 (tBuPOCOP = 2,6-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinito)phenyl) that catalyzes CO2 hydrogenation to formate with faster rates at lower temperatures. Because the catalyst follows the prototypical "outer sphere" hydrogenation mechanism, comprehensive studies of temperature and solvent effects on the H2 splitting and hydride transfer steps are expected to be relevant to many other catalysts. Strikingly large entropy associated with cleavage of H2 results in a strong temperature dependence on the concentration of [(tBuPOCOP)Re(CO)2H]- present during catalysis, which is further impacted by changing the solvent from toluene to tetrahydrofuran to acetonitrile. New methods for determining the hydricity of metal hydrides and formate at temperatures other than 298 K are developed, providing insight into how temperature can influence the favorability of hydride transfer during catalysis. These thermochemical insights guided the selection of conditions for CO2 hydrogenation to formate with high activity (up to 364 h-1 at 1 atm or 3330 h-1 at 20 atm of 1:1 H2:CO2). In cases where hydride transfer is the highest individual kinetic barrier, entropic contributions to outer sphere H2 splitting lead to a unique temperature dependence: catalytic activity increases as temperature decreases in tetrahydrofuran (200-fold increase upon cooling from 50 to 0 °C) and toluene (4-fold increase upon cooling from 100 to 50 °C). Ramifications on catalyst structure-function relationships are discussed, including comparisons between "outer sphere" mechanisms and "metal-ligand cooperation" mechanisms.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a new series of neutral, six-coordinated compounds [ReIIIX3(PNPR)], where X is Cl or Br and PNPR is a diphosphinoamine having the general formula (Ph2PCH2CH2)2NR (R = H, CH3, CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH2CH3 and CH2CH2OCH3) are reported. Stable [ReIIIX3(PNPR)] complexes were synthesized, in variable yields, starting from precursors where the metal was in different oxidation states (iii and v), by ligand-exchange and/or redox-substitution reactions. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, proton NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis spectroscopy, positive-ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI(+)-MS) and X-ray diffraction analysis. Although the formulation of the complexes allows either meridional or facial isomers, the latter arrangement was prevalent both in the solid and solution states. Only [ReCl3(PNPH)] showed a meridional configuration both in solution and in the crystalline state. [ReBr3(PNPme)] prefers the meridional configuration in the crystalline state and the facial one in solution. While ESI(+)-MS and voltammetric data seem to indicate some dependency from the nature of the alkyl substituent at the nitrogen, the available structural data of the complexes show only slight differences both for angles and bond lengths upon change of the alkyl chain tethered to the nitrogen.

Abstract
The dearomatized complex cis-[Re(PNP(tBu)*)(CO)2] (4) undergoes cooperative activation of C≡N triple bonds of nitriles via [1,3]-addition. Reversible C-C and Re-N bond formation in 4 was investigated in a combined experimental and computational study. The reversible formation of the ketimido complexes (5-7) was observed. When nitriles bearing an alpha methylene group are used, reversible formation of the enamido complexes (8 and 9) takes place. The reversibility of the activation of the nitriles in the resulting ketimido compounds was demonstrated by the displacement of p-CF3-benzonitrile from cis-[Re(PNP(tBu)-N═CPh(pCF3))(CO)2] (6) upon addition of an excess of benzonitrile and by the temperature-dependent [1,3]-addition of pivalonitrile to complex 4. The reversible binding of the nitrile in the enamido compound cis-[Re(PNP(tBu)-HNC═CHPh)(CO)2] (9) was demonstrated via the displacement of benzyl cyanide from 9 by CO. Computational studies suggest a stepwise activation of the nitriles by 4, with remarkably low activation barriers, involving precoordination of the nitrile group to the Re(I) center. The enamido complex 9 reacts via β-carbon methylation to give the primary imino complex cis-[Re(PNP(tBu)-HN═CC(Me)Ph)(CO)2]OTf 11. Upon deprotonation of 11 and subsequent addition of benzyl cyanide, complex 9 is regenerated and the monomethylation product 2-phenylpropanenitrile is released. Complexes 4 and 9 were found to catalyze the Michael addition of benzyl cyanide derivatives to α,β-unsaturated esters and carbonyls.
