Abstract
Ligand electronic effects play an important role in catalysis, where small changes to ligand structure can bring about large changes in catalytic activity. Therefore, accurate experimental quantification of ligand electronic properties plays a crucial role in understanding and tuning chemical reactivity. In this work, we used cryogenic ion vibrational predissociation (CIVP) spectroscopy to experimentally quantify electronic effects in terpyridine ligands, as simple model systems, by measuring CIVP spectra of their copper complexes tagged by N2 molecules. We used the N2 stretching vibration as a reporter chromophore to probe electronic effects of the investigated ligands and employed quantum chemical calculations to better understand how different substituents influence the vibrational frequencies of the stretching vibration of the chromophore. Our data show that the electronic character, as well as position and number of substituents, can affect the N≡N vibrational frequency, and that the N≡N bond serves as a sensitive probe for electronic and steric effects.

Abstract
Thiele, Chichibabin and Müller hydrocarbons are considered as classical Kekulé diradicaloids. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. The calculated singlet–triplet energy gaps are ΔES–T = −27.96, −3.70, −0.37 kcal mol−1, respectively, and gradually decrease with the increasing length of the π-conjugated spacer (p-phenylene vs. p,p′-biphenylene vs. p,p′′-terphenylene) between the two ADC-scaffolds. In agreement with the calculations, we also experimentally observed the enhancement of paramagnetic diradical character as a function of the length of the π-conjugated spacer. ADC-based Thiele's hydrocarbon is EPR silent and exhibits very well resolved NMR spectra, whereas ADC-based Müller's hydrocarbon displays EPR signals and featureless NMR spectra at room temperature. The spacer also has a strong influence on the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of these compounds. Considering that our methodology is modular, these results provide a convenient platform for the synthesis of an electronically modified new class of carbon-centered Kekulé diradicaloids. We report the synthesis of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-scaffold based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. Studies support that the singlet-triplet energy gap depends on the π-conjugated spacer between the ADC scaffolds.![]()

Abstract
A library of 14 heterobis(carbene) complexes of the general formula [Au(iPr2-bimy)(ADC)]BF4 (7-20) containing the N-heterocyclic carbene reporter iPr2-bimy and various protic acyclic diaminocarbenes (ADCs) have been prepared to estimate their stereoelectronic properties by 13C NMR spectroscopy and percentage buried volume (%Vbur) determinations. Their preparation was achieved by nucleophilic attack of five secondary amines on six mixed NHC/isocyanide complexes of the type [Au(iPr2-bimy)(CN-R)]BF4 (1-6). Analyses of the iPr2-bimy carbene signals reveal that protic ADCs are stronger donors than classical and expanded-ring NHCs. On the other hand, they are weaker donating compared to NHCs with reduced-heteroatom stabilization. Moreover, stereoelectronic fine-tuning of these ligands is possible by a diverse range of substituents originating from the employed isocyanides and amines.

Abstract
Four new acyclic diaminocarbenes (ADACs), viz. [(cyclo-Cn H2n-1 )2 N]2 C (n=5-7) and iPr2 N-C-N(cyclo-C6 H11 )2 , were synthesised by reacting the corresponding formamidinium hexafluorophosphates with NaN(SiMe3 )2 . Their nucleophilicities and electrophilicities were respectively judged from the 1 JCH values determined for the N2 CH unit of the corresponding formamidinium cations and from the 77 Se NMR chemical shifts of the selenourea derivatives obtained from the reaction of elemental selenium with the corresponding ADACs. An ambiphilic profile essentially identical to that of the "Alder carbene" (iPr2 N)2 C was found in each case. Similar to the latter carbene, the new ADACs undergo a well-defined thermal decomposition by β-fragmentation, affording an alkene and a formamidine. The stabilities of [(cyclo-Cn H2n-1 )2 N]2 C depend strongly on the value of n, following the order 6>5>7, with the latter congener being too unstable for isolation. [(cyclo-C6 H11 )2 N]2 C shows no thermal decomposition at room temperature in solution and is thus significantly more stable than (iPr2 N)2 C. The stability of iPr2 N-C-N(cyclo-C6 H11 )2 is intermediate between that of (iPr2 N)2 C and [(cyclo-C6 H11 )2 N]2 C, its β-fragmentation selectively affording propene and iPrN=CH-N(cyclo-C6 H11 )2 . [(cyclo-Cn H2n-1 )2 N]2 C (n=5-7) react readily with CO under mild conditions, selectively affording trisubstituted spirocyclic β-lactam derivatives with an antimicrobial activity spectrum similar to that of penicillin G.

Abstract
The reaction of cis-[PdCl2(CNXyl)2] (Xyl = 2,6-Me2C6H3) with the aminoazoles [1 H-imidazol-2-amine (1), 4 H-1,2,4-triazol-3-amine (2), 1 H-tetrazol-5-amine (3), 1 H-benzimidazol-2-amine (4), 1-alkyl-1 H-benzimidazol-2-amines, where alkyl = Me (5), Et (6)] in a 2:1 ratio in the presence of a base in CHCl3 at RT proceeds regioselectively and leads to the binuclear diaminocarbene complexes [(ClPdCNXyl)2{μ-C(N-azolyl)N(Xyl)C═NXyl}] (7-12; 73-91%). Compounds 7-12 were characterized by C, H, N elemental analyses, high-resolution ESI+-MS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1D (1H, 13C) and 2D (1H,1H-COSY, 1H,1H-NOESY, 1H,13C-HSQC, 1H,13C-HMBC) NMR spectroscopies, and X-ray diffraction (XRDn). Inspection of the XRDn data and results of the Hirshfeld surface analysis suggest the presence in all six structures of intramolecular π-holeisocyanide···πarene interactions between the electrophilic C atom of the isocyanide moiety and the neighboring arene ring. These interactions also result in distortion of the Pd-C≡N-Xyl fragment from the linearity. Results of density functional theory calculations [M06/MWB28 (Pd) and 6-31G* (other atoms) level of theory] for model structures of 7-9 followed by the topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of Bader's theory (QTAIM method) reveal the presence of these weak interactions also in a CHCl3 solution, and their calculated strength is 1.9-2.2 kcal/mol. The natural bond orbital analysis of 7-9 revealed that π(C-C)Xyl → π*(C-N)isocyanide charge transfer (CT) takes place along with the intramolecular π-holeisocyanide···πarene interactions. The observed π(C-C)Xyl → π*(C-N)isocyanide CT is due to ligation of the isocyanide to the metal center, whereas in the cases of the uncomplexed p-CNC6H4NC and CNXyl species, the effects of CT are negligible. Available CCDC data were processed from the perspective of isocyanide-involving π-hole···π interactions, disclosed the role of metal coordination in the π-hole donor ability of isocyanides, and verified the π-holeisocyanide···πarene interaction effect on the stabilization of the in-conformation in metal-bound acyclic diaminocarbenes.

Abstract
We describe ferrocene-based N-heterocyclic germylenes and stannylenes of the type [Fe{(η5 -C5 H4 )NR}2 E:] (1 RE; E=Ge, Sn; R=neopentyl (Np), mesityl (Mes), trimethylsilyl (TMS)), which constitute the first examples of redox-functionalised N-heterocyclic tetrylenes (NHTs). These compounds are thermally stable and were structurally characterised by means of X-ray diffraction studies, except for the neopentyl-substituted stannylene 1 NpSn, the decomposition of which afforded the aminoiminoferrocene [fc(NHCH2 tBu)(N=CHtBu)] (2) and the spiro tin(IV) compound (1 Np)2 Sn (3). DFT calculations show that the HOMO of the NHTs of our study is localised on the ferrocenylene backbone. A one-electron oxidation process affords ions of the type 1 RE+. . In contrast to the NHC system 1 RC, the localised ferrocenium-type nature of the oxidised form does not compromise the fundamental tetrylene character of 1 RE+. .

Abstract
The portfolio of acyclic diaminocarbenes (ADACs) has been substantially expanded, owing to the synthesis of eleven new formamidinium salts, mostly of the type [(iPr2N)CH(NRR')][PF6], for use as immediate carbene precursors. The corresponding ADACs (iPr2N)C(NRR') were sufficiently stable for isolation in the case of NRR' = 2-methylpiperidino (13), 3-methylpiperidino (14), 4-methylpiperidino (15), morpholino (17) and NiPrPh (20), but had to be trapped in situ in the case of NRR' = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidino (12) and NiPrMe (19). The tetraaryl-substituted ADACs (Ph2N)2C (22) and (Ph2N)C[N(C6F5)2] (24) also could only be generated and trapped in situ. Trapping with elemental selenium was particularly efficient, affording the corresponding selenourea derivative in all cases, whereas trapping with [{Rh(μ-Cl)(cod)}2] did not work for 12 and 24. The (77)Se NMR chemical shifts, δ((77)Se), of the selenourea compounds derived from the new ADACs lie in the range 450-760 ppm, which indicates a much higher electrophilicity and π-accepting capability of ADACs in comparison with NHCs, which typically exhibit δ((77)Se)<200 ppm. The extreme low-field shift of 758 ppm observed for 12Se can be rationalised by the results of DFT calculations, which revealed that ADAC 12 has a minimum energy conformation with the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidino unit perpendicular to the N2C plane, which suppresses the π donation of this amino group and causes an unusually low LUMO energy and high electrophilicity.

Abstract
In this work, we calculate the redox potential in a series of Ir and Ru complexes bearing a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand presenting different Y groups in the para position of the aromatic N-substituent. The calculated redox potentials excellently correlate with the experimental ΔE(1/2) potentials, offering a handle to rationalize the experimental findings. Analysis of the HOMO of the complexes before oxidation suggests that electron-donating Y groups destabilize the metal centered HOMO. Energy decomposition of the metal-NHC interaction indicates that electron-donating Y groups reinforce this interaction in the oxidized complexes. Analysis of the electron density in the reduced and oxidized states of representative complexes indicates a clear donation from the C(ipso) of the N-substituents to an empty d orbital on the metal. In case of the Ru complexes, this mechanism involves the Ru-alkylidene moiety. All of these results suggest that electron-donating Y groups render the aromatic N-substituent able to donate more density to electron-deficient metals through the C(ipso) atom. This conclusion suggests that electron-donating Y groups could stabilize higher oxidation states during catalysis. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the effect of differently donating Y groups in model reactions of Ru-catalyzed olefin metathesis and Pd-catalyzed C-C cross-coupling. Consistent with the experimental results, calculations indicate an easier reaction pathway if the N-substituent of the NHC ligand presents an electron-donating Y group.
