Abstract
The application of early-metal-based catalysts featuring natural chiral pool motifs, such as amino acids, terpenes and alkaloids, in hydroamination reactions is discussed and compared to those beyond the chiral pool. In particular, alkaline (Li), alkaline earth (Mg, Ca), rare earth (Y, La, Nd, Sm, Lu), group IV (Ti, Zr, Hf) metal-, and tantalum-based catalytic systems are described, which in recent years improved considerably and have become more practical in their usability. Additional emphasis is directed towards their catalytic performance including yields and regio- as well as stereoselectivity in comparison with the group IV and V transition metals and more widely used rare earth metal-based catalysts.

Abstract
The addition of a B-H bond to an unsaturated bond (polarized or unpolarized) is a powerful and atom-economic tool for the synthesis of organoboranes. In recent years, s-block organometallics have appeared as alternative catalysts to transition-metal complexes, which traditionally catalyze the hydroboration of unsaturated bonds. Because of the recent and rapid development in the field of hydroboration of unsaturated bonds catalyzed by alkali (Li, Na, K) and alkaline earth (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) metals, we provide a detailed and updated comprehensive review that covers the synthesis, reactivity, and application of s-block metal catalysts in the hydroboration of polarized as well as unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds. Moreover, we describe the main reaction mechanisms, providing valuable insight into the reactivity of the s-block metal catalysts. Finally, we compare these s-block metal complexes with other redox-neutral catalytic systems based on p-block metals including aluminum complexes and f-block metal complexes of lanthanides and early actinides. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive, authoritative, and critical assessment of the state of the art within this highly interesting research area.

Abstract
The use of the 15-membered NNNNN macrocyclic ligand Me5PACP (Me5PACP = 1,4,7,10,13-pentamethyl-1,4,7,10,13-pentaazacyclopentadecane) allowed the isolation of two cationic strontium hydride complexes by hydrogenolysis of benzyl precursors. Treatment of sparingly soluble [(Me5PACP)Sr(CH2Ph)2] with dihydrogen gave free Me5PACP, toluene, and oligomeric strontium hydride [SrH2]n, while hydrogenolysis in the presence of 1 equiv of the benzyl cation [(Me5PACP)Sr(CH2Ph)][B(C6H3-3,5-Me2)4] enabled isolation of the thermally unstable trihydride cation [(Me5PACP)2Sr2(μ-H)3][B(C6H3-3,5-Me2)4]. When the benzyl cation [(Me5PACP)Sr(CH2Ph)][BAr4]2 (Ar = C6H3-3,5-Me2 or C6H4-4-nBu) was reacted with dihydrogen or n-octylsilane, dihydride complexes [(Me5PACP)2Sr2(μ-H)2][BAr4]2 containing a dinuclear core bridged by two hydride ligands were obtained. The soluble dihydride complex [(Me5PACP)2Sr2(μ-H)2][B(C6H4-4-nBu)4]2 was tested in olefin hydrogenation and hydrosilylation catalysis. Kinetic analyses for [(Me5PACP)2Sr2(μ-H)2]2+ showed lower catalytic activity as compared to that of the isostructural calcium homologue [(Me5PACP)2Ca2(μ-H)2]2+. This is explained by a shift in the monomer-dimer equilibrium which precedes the catalytic cycle.

Abstract
The synthesis of calcium complexes ligated by three different chiral iminophosphonamide ligands, L-H (L=[Ph2 P{N(R)CH(CH3 )Ph}2 ]), L'-H (L'=[Ph2 P{NDipp}{N(R)CH(CH3 )Ph}]), (Dipp=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ), and L''-H (L''=[Ph2 P{N(R)CH(CH3 )naph}2 ]), (naph=naphthyl) is presented. The resulting structures [L2 Ca], [L'2 Ca], and [L''2 Ca] represent the first examples of enantiopure homoleptic calcium complexes based on this type of ligands. The calcium complexes show blue-green photoluminescence (PL) in the solid state, which is especially bright at low temperatures. Whereas the emission of [L''2 Ca] is assigned to the fluorescence of naphthyl groups, the PL of [L2 Ca] and [L'2 Ca] is contributed by long-lived phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), with a strong variation of the PL lifetimes over the temperature range of 5-295 K. Furthermore, an excellent catalytic activity was found for these complexes in hydroboration of ketones at room temperature, although no enantioselectivity was achieved.

Abstract
Platinum complexes have been often considered as the least reactive of the group 10 triad metals. Slow kinetics are behind this lack of reactivity but, still, some industrially relevant catalytic process are dominated by platinum compounds and sometimes different selectivities can be found in comparison to Ni or Pd. Nevertheless, during the last years, it has been reported that the catalytic behaviour of well-defined platinum derivatives can be improved through a judicious choice of their electronic and steric properties, leading to highly electrophilic or low-electron count platinum systems. In this feature article, we highlight some catalytic processes in which well-defined electrophilic platinum complexes or coordinatively unsaturated systems play an important role in their catalytic activity.

Abstract
The dehydrocoupling of silanes and alcohols mediated by heavier alkaline-earth catalysts, [Ae{N(SiMe3 )2 }2 ⋅(THF)2 ] (I-III) and [Ae{CH(SiMe3 )2 }2 ⋅(THF)2 ], (IV-VI) (Ae=Ca, Sr, Ba) is described. Primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols were coupled to phenylsilane or diphenylsilane, whereas tertiary silanes are less tolerant towards bulky substrates. Some control over reaction selectivity towards mono-, di-, or tri-substituted silylether products was achieved through alteration of reaction stoichiometry, conditions, and catalyst. The ferrocenyl silylether, FeCp(C5 H4 SiPh(OBn)2 ) (2), was prepared and fully characterized from the ferrocenylsilane, FeCp(C5 H4 SiPhH2 ) (1), and benzyl alcohol using barium catalysis. Stoichiometric experiments suggested a reaction manifold involving the formation of Ae-alkoxide and hydride species, and a series of dimeric Ae-alkoxides [(Ph3 CO)Ae(μ2 -OCPh3 )Ae(THF)] (3 a-c, Ae=Ca, Sr, Ba) were isolated and fully characterized. Mechanistic experiments suggested a complex reaction mechanism involving dimeric or polynuclear active species, whose kinetics are highly dependent on variables such as the identity and concentration of the precatalyst, silane, and alcohol. Turnover frequencies increase on descending Group 2 of the periodic table, with the barium precatalyst III displaying an apparent first-order dependence in both silane and alcohol, and an optimum catalyst loading of 3 mol % Ba, above which activity decreases. With precatalyst III in THF, ferrocene-containing poly- and oligosilylethers with ferrocene pendent to- (P1-P4) or as a constituent (P5, P6) of the main polymer chain were prepared from 1 or Fe(C5 H4 SiPhH2 )2 (4) with diols 1,4-(HOCH2 )2 -(C6 H4 ) and 1,4-(CH(CH3 )OH)2 -(C6 H4 ), respectively. The resultant materials were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and DOSY NMR spectroscopy, with estimated molecular weights in excess of 20,000 Da for P1 and P4. The iron centers display reversible redox behavior and thermal analysis showed P1 and P5 to be promising precursors to magnetic ceramic materials.

Abstract
The reactivity of the magnesium alkyl {[HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(nBu)}2 (1) toward various small molecules provides access to a variety of magnesium derivatives. For example, the insertion of elemental chalcogens (S8 and Se8) into the Mg-C bond of complex 1 gives the dimeric magnesium thiolate {[HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(μ-SnBu)}2 (2), magnesium selenolate [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(SenBu)(THF) (3), and magnesium diselenolate [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(Se2nBu)(THF) (4). Meanwhile, compound 4 can be readily obtained by further insertion of one selenium atom into complex 3. Moreover, the reactions of complex 1 with diphenyl dichalcogenides (PhSSPh and PhSeSePh) by σ bond metathesis afford the corresponding magnesium phenyl chalcogenolates [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(EPh)(THF) (E = S 5, Se 6) concomitant with PhEnBu release. Furthermore, the treatment of complex 1 with benzonitrile and phenyl isothiocyanate produces the serendipitous magnesium-1-azaallyl complex [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(N(H)C(Ph)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC3H7)(DME) (7) and the diimino-thioamidato magnesium compound {κ3-N,N',N''-(ArNCMe)2[N(Ph)CS]CH}Mg[(Ph)NC(nBu)S] (8) (Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3). In addition, deprotonation occurs between compound 1 and 1-methylimidazole to generate the imidazolyl complex {[HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(μ-Im)}2 (9) (Im = 2-N-methylimidazolyl). These results indicated that the butylmagnesium complex 1 possesses high activity toward small molecules and revealed several unusual transformations. All the new compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, and their solid-state structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) can be used to study the three-center two-electron (3c2e) bonding mode, which is universal in catalysts containing alkaline-earth (Ae) and boron-group (Bg) elements. However, because of the delocalization pattern of the 3c2e bond, the wavefunction cannot be accurately described by DFT methods. The calculated energies of Ae and Bg catalysts therefore fluctuate greatly when different functionals are used, largely because of inconsistent DFT-calculated binding energies of 3c2e bonds. Nevertheless, with the development of supercomputers and theoretical calculation software, the DFT method is becoming increasingly popular for studying Ae and Bg catalysts. In this study, we compared the performances of 21 functionals with the high-level composite G3B3 method in calculations for the binding energies of 3c2e bonds. Several frequently used post-Hartree-Fock methods were also tested. The calculation results indicate that the M06-2X, MN12-L, and MN15 functionals give consistent and reliable binding energies for common 3c2e bonds. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Investigation on organocalcium catalysis is just unfolding during the past decade. Beside conventional Ca salts with strong electron-withdrawing counter anions that may serve as Lewis acid catalysts, many Ca complexes have also been designed recently and found to be good catalysts in activation of element-H (EH) bonds like transition metal catalysts. These findings are interesting and may attract the interest of the chemists. Due to the great abundance, non-toxicity, and biocompatible features of Ca element, Ca-catalyzed reactions can be of great significance from the viewpoint of industry. This short review summarizes the recent advances on Ca-catalyzed reactions of EH bonds. We hope that it may provide a useful guide for interested readers from both the academy and industry.

Abstract
Syntheses and crystal structures of the monomeric bora-amidinate (bam) complexes DIPPNBN-Mg·(THF)3 and DIPPNBN-Ca·(THF)4 are presented; DIPPNBN = HB[N(2,6-iPr2-C6H3)]2. The simplicity of their 1H NMR spectra in THF-d8 suggest that their monomeric solid state structures are retained in solution. DIPPNBN-Mg·(THF)3 in C6D6, however, is in equilibrium with a dimeric species. Calculations (B3PW91/6-311++G**) reveal a very high localized negative charge (NPA: -1.103) on the N atoms in DIPPNBN-Mg. The strongly basic properties of the bam ligand are in agreement with catalytic activity of these complexes in the intramolecular alkene hydroamination. A mechanism is proposed in which the bam ligand is non-innocent and cooperative, playing an active role in substrate deprotonation and product protonation.

Abstract
The large alkaline earths (Ae), calcium, strontium and barium, have in the past 15 years yielded a brand new generation of heteroleptic molecular catalysts for the production of fine chemicals. However, the integrity of these complexes is often plagued by ligand redistribution equilibria in solution. This personal account retraces the paths followed in our research group towards the design of stable heteroleptic alkalino-earth complexes, including the use of intramolecular noncovalent Ae···H-Si and Ae···F-C interactions. Their implementation as homogenous precatalysts for reactions such as the intramolecular and intermolecular hydroamination and hydrophosphination of activated alkenes, the hydrophosphonylation of ketones, and the dehydrogenative coupling of amines and hydrosilanes that enable the efficient and controlled formations of CP, CN, or SiN σ-bonds, is presented in a synthetic perspective that highlights their overall outstanding catalytic performance.

Abstract
The past decade has witnessed some remarkable advances in our appreciation of the structural and reaction chemistry of the heavier alkaline earth (Ae = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) elements. Derived from complexes of these metals in their immutable +2 oxidation state, a broad and widely applicable catalytic chemistry has also emerged, driven by considerations of cost and inherent low toxicity. The considerable adjustments incurred to ionic radius and resultant cation charge density also provide reactivity with significant mechanistic and kinetic variability as group 2 is descended. In an attempt to place these advances in the broader context of contemporary main group element chemistry, this review focusses on the developing state of the art in both multiple bond heterofunctionalisation and cross coupling catalysis. We review specific advances in alkene and alkyne hydroamination and hydrophosphination catalysis and related extensions of this reactivity that allow the synthesis of a wide variety of acyclic and heterocyclic small molecules. The use of heavier alkaline earth hydride derivatives as pre-catalysts and intermediates in multiple bond hydrogenation, hydrosilylation and hydroboration is also described along with the emergence of these and related reagents in a variety of dehydrocoupling processes that allow that facile catalytic construction of Si-C, Si-N and B-N bonds.

A β-diketiminato n-butylmagnesium complex is presented as a selective precatalyst for the reductive hydroboration of organic nitriles with pinacolborane (HBpin). Stoichiometric reactivity studies indicate that catalytic turnover ensues through the generation of magnesium aldimido, aldimidoborate and borylamido intermediates, which are formed in a sequence of intramolecular nitrile insertion and inter- and intramolecular B-H metathesis events. Kinetic studies highlight variations in mechanism for the catalytic dihydroboration of alkyl nitriles, aryl nitriles bearing electron withdrawing (Ar(EWG)CN) and aryl nitriles bearing electron donating (Ar(EDG)CN) substitution patterns. Kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) for catalysis performed with DBpin indicate that B-H bond breaking and C-H bond forming reactions are involved in the rate determining processes during the dihydroboration of alkyl nitriles and Ar(EDG)CN substrates, which display divergent first and second order rate dependences on [HBpin] respectively. In contrast, the hydroboration of Ar(EWG)CN substrates provides no KIE and HBpin is not implicated in the rate determining process during catalysis. Irrespective of these differences, a common mechanism is proposed in which the rate determining steps are deduced to vary through the establishment of several pre-equilibria, the relative positions of which are determined by the respective stabilities of the dimeric and monomeric magnesium aldimide and magnesium aldimidoborate intermediates as a result of adjustments to the basicity of the nitrile substrate. More generally, these observations indicate that homogeneous processes performed under heavier alkaline earth catalysis are likely to demonstrate previously unappreciated mechanistic diversity.

Abstract
The approved precatalyst [K2Ca{N(H)Dipp}4] was employed to study the hydroamination of diphenylbutadiyne with N-methyl-anilines in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. The hydroamination occurs regioselectively within a few hours yielding (N-methyl)-(N-aryl)-1,4-diphenylbut-1-ene-3-yne-1-ylamine with phenyl (1a), 4-tolyl (1b) and 4-fluorophenyl groups (1c). In all cases a mixture of E- and Z-isomers is obtained. The second hydroamination step requires drastically extended reaction times and is successful only for the reaction of diphenylbutadiyne with N-methyl-aniline and N-methyl-4-fluoroaniline giving 1,4-diphenyl-1,4-bis(N-methyl-anilino)buta-1,3-diene [R = H (2a) and F (2c)]; a mixture of E,E-, E,Z- and Z,Z-isomers is obtained. The X-ray structures of E-1a, E-1b and E-1c show a slightly shortened N-C bond to the alkene moieties. Due to enhanced steric strain the anilino units of Z,Z-2c and Z,Z-3 turn away from the butadiene unit and consequently, the lone pair at the planar nitrogen atoms slightly interacts with the adjacent aryl groups.

Abstract
A comprehensive computational examination of alternatively plausible mechanistic pathways for the intramolecular hydroamination (HA) of aminoalkenes utilising a recently reported novel phenylene-diamine aluminium amido compound is presented. On the one hand, a proton-assisted concerted N-C/C-H bond-forming pathway to afford the cycloamine in a single step can be invoked, and, on the other, a stepwise σ-insertive pathway that involves a relatively fast, reversible migratory olefin 1,2-insertion step linked to a less rapid, irreversible Al-C alkyl bond protonolysis. The present study, which employs a sophisticated and reliable computational methodology, supports the prevailing mechanism to be a stepwise σ-insertive pathway. The predicted effective barrier for turnover-limiting aminolysis compares favourably with reported catalytic performance data. Non-competitive kinetic demands militates against the operation of the concerted proton-assisted pathway, which describes N-C bond-forming ring closure triggered by concomitant amino proton delivery at the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C linkage evolving through a six-centre transition state structure. The valuable insights into mechanistic intricacies of aluminium-mediated intramolecular HA reported herein will help guide the rational design of group 13 metal-based HA catalysts.

Abstract
The synthesis and catalytic properties of a series of magnesium compounds consisting of monoanionic, N,N'-chelating ligands (N∩N = amidinates, guanidinates, phosphaguanidinates) is reported. The compounds were synthesized by (i) insertion of a carbodiimide into an existing Mg-C or Mg-N bond, or (ii) protonolysis of an organomagnesium compound by a neutral pre-ligand. Structural analyses of mono- or bis-(chelate) compounds with general formula Mg(N∩N)X(L)n and Mg(N∩N)2(L)n (X = halide, aryloxide, amide; L = Et2O, THF; n = 0, 1 or 2) have been performed and the influence that the ligand substituent patterns have on the solid-state structures has been probed. Selected examples of the compounds were tested as (pre)catalysts for the polymerization of lactide, the dimerization of aldehydes and the hydroacetylenation of carbodiimides.
