New Sandwich and Half-Sandwich Titanium Hydrazido Compounds

From Coordination to Noncoordination: Syntheses and Substitution Lability Studies of Titanium Triflato Complexes

A new concept for obtaining cationic complexes with triflate counteranions from coordinating triflato ligands was developed. Various routes are leading to titanium(IV) and titanium(III) triflato complexes efficiently. The reactions of pentafulvene titanium complexes with either triflic acid or silver triflate give the corresponding titanium(IV) triflato complexes in excellent yields. Hydrolysis of the titanium(IV) bistriflato complexes leads to cationic aqua complexes via displacement of the triflato ligand, which consequently acts as a noncoordinating anion. A functionalized titanium(IV) monotriflato complex was synthesized by insertion of a nitrile into the Ti-C bond and the triflato ligand was displaced by an NHC. While the titanium(IV) complexes are mostly inert toward substrates, the donor-free titanium(III) triflato complex is a strong Lewis acid and forms various adducts with monodentate Lewis bases. The titanium(III) complex was oxidized by reaction with TEMPO, resulting in a diamagnetic titanium(IV) complex. The reaction with bidentate ligands results in cationic titanium(III) complexes due to displacement of the triflato ligand by the bidentate ligands. Treatment with acetone leads to an aldol reaction of two acetone molecules and the formation of a cationic diacetone alcohol complex.

[Cr(pincer2-)]2 as an electron shuttle for reductively promoted hydrazine disproportionation

We describe here delivery of hydrazine to a reducing, low oxidation state chromium bound to a proton responsive ligand which has already been deprotonated. Reaction of PhHNNH₂ at a 4 : 1 mole ratio with the bis-(pyrazolate)pyridyl pincer ligated reducing agent [Cr^IIL]₂ gives prompt conversion to [CrL₂(PhNH₂)₂(μ-PhHNN)], with release of NH₃ and C₆H₆, a new disproportionation of the hydrazine, with trapping of PhHNN as its dianion, bridging the two chromium centers. The redox balance of the reaction is discussed, and participation by Brønsted basic sites on the bis-(pyrazolate)pyridyl pincer ligand L^2- is suggested, but no hydrazine protons remain on the pincer in the product.

Conversion of dinitrogen to tris(trimethylsilyl)amine catalyzed by titanium triamido-amine complexes

By using a triaryl-Tren ligated titanium dinitrogen complex, K2[{(Xy-N3N)Ti}2(μ2-N2)] (3), prepared by two-electron reduction of [TiCl(Xy-N3N)] (1-Cl) under N2 atmosphere, catalytic fixation of molecular nitrogen to form tris(trimethylsilyl)amine was achieved under ambient conditions with a turnover number (TON) of up to 16.5 per titanium atom.

A Terminal Iron(IV) Nitride Supported by a Super Bulky Guanidinate Ligand and Examination of Its Electronic Structure and Reactivity

Utilizing the bulky guanidinate ligand [L^Ar*]^- (L^Ar* = (Ar*N)₂C(R), Ar* = 2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-tert-butylphenyl, R = NC^tBu₂) for kinetic stabilization, the synthesis of a rare terminal Fe(IV) nitride complex is reported. UV irradiation of a pyridine solution of the Fe(II) azide [L^Ar*]FeN₃(py) (3-py) at 0 °C cleanly generates the Fe(IV) nitride [L^Ar*]FeN(py) (1). The ¹⁵N NMR spectrum of the 1^15N (50% Fe≡¹⁵N) isotopomer shows a resonance at 1016 ppm (vs externally referenced CH₃NO₂ at 380 ppm), comparable to that known for other terminal iron nitrides. Notably, the computed structure of 1 reveals an iron center with distorted tetrahedral geometry, τ₄ = 0.72, featuring a short Fe≡N bond (1.52 Å). Inspection of the frontier orbital ordering of 1 shows a relatively small HOMO/LUMO gap with the LUMO comprised by Fe(d_xz,yz)N(p_x,y) π*-orbitals, a splitting that is manifested in the electronic absorption spectrum of 1 (λ = 610 nm, ε = 1375 L·mol^-1·cm^-1; λ = 613 nm (calcd)). Complex 1 persists in low-temperature solutions of pyridine but becomes unstable at room temperature, gradually converting to the Fe(II) hydrazide product [κ²-(^tBu₂CN)C(η⁶-NAr*)(N-NAr*)]Fe (4) upon standing via intramolecular N-atom insertion. This reactivity of the Fe≡N moiety was assessed through molecular orbital analysis, which suggests electrophilic character at the nitride functionality. Accordingly, treatment of 1 with the nucleophiles PMe₂Ph and Ar-N≡C (Ar = 2,6-dimethylphenyl) leads to partial N-atom transfer and formation of the Fe(II) addition products [L^Ar*]Fe(N═PMe₂Ph)(py) (5) and [L^Ar*]Fe(N═C═NAr)(py) (6). Similarly, 1 reacts with PhSiH₃ to give [L^Ar*]Fe[N(H)(SiH₂Ph)](py) (7) which Fukui analysis shows to proceed via electrophilic insertion of the nitride into the Si-H bond.

Room-Temperature Ring-Opening of Quinoline, Isoquinoline, and Pyridine with Low-Valent Titanium

The complex (PNP)Ti═CH^tBu(CH₂^tBu) (PNP = N[2-PⁱPr₂-4-methylphenyl]₂^-) dehydrogenates cyclohexane to cyclohexene by forming a transient low-valent titanium-alkyl species, [(PNP)Ti(CH₂^tBu)], which reacts with 2 equiv of quinoline (Q) at room temperature to form H₃C^tBu and a Ti(IV) species where the less hindered C₂═N₁ bond of Q is ruptured and coupled to another equivalent of Q. The product isolated from this reaction is an imide with a tethered cycloamide group, (PNP)Ti═N[C₁₈H₁₃N] (1). Under photolytic conditions, intramolecular C-H bond activation across the imide moiety in 1 occurs to form 2, and thermolysis reverses this process. The reaction of 2 equiv of isoquinoline (Iq) with intermediate [(PNP)Ti(CH₂^tBu)] results in regioselective cleavage of the C₁═N₂ and C₁-H bonds, which eventually couple to form complex 3, a constitutional isomer of 1. Akin to 1, the transient [(PNP)Ti(CH₂^tBu)] complex can ring-open and couple two pyridine molecules, to produce a close analogue of 1, complex (PNP)Ti═N[C₁₀H₉N] (4). Multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectra confirm structures for complexes 1-4, whereas solid-state structural analysis reveals the structures of 2, 3, and 4. DFT calculations suggest an unprecedented mechanism for ring-opening of Q where the reactive intermediate in the low-spin manifold crosses over to the high-spin surface to access a low-energy transition state but returns to the low-spin surface immediately. This double spin-crossover constitutes a rare example of a two-state reactivity, which is key for enabling the reaction at room temperature. The regioselective behavior of Iq ring-opening is found to be due to electronic effects, where the aromatic resonance of the bicycle is maintained during the key C-C coupling event.

New Titanium Borylimido Compounds: Synthesis, Structure, and Bonding

We report a combined experimental and computational study of the synthesis and electronic structure of titanium borylimido compounds. Three new synthetic routes to this hitherto almost unknown class of Group 4 imide are presented. The double-deprotonation reaction of the borylamine H₂NB(NAr'CH)₂ (Ar' = 2,6-C₆H₃ⁱPr₂) with Ti(NMe₂)₂Cl₂ gave Ti{NB(NAr'CH)₂}Cl₂(NHMe₂)₂, which was easily converted to Ti{NB(NAr'CH)₂}Cl₂(py)₃. This compound is an entry point to other borylimides, for example, reacting with Li₂N₂^pyrN^Me to form Ti(N₂^pyrN^Me){NB(NAr'CH)₂}(py)₂ and with 2 equiv of NaCp to give Cp₂Ti{NB(NAr'CH)₂}(py) (23). Borylamine-tert-butylimide exchange between H₂NB(NAr'CH)₂ and Cp*Ti(N^tBu)Cl(py) under forcing conditions afforded Cp*Ti{NB(NAr'CH)₂}Cl(py), which could be further substituted with guanidinate or pyrrolide-amine ligands to give Cp*Ti(hpp){NB(NAr'CH)₂} (16) and Cp*Ti(N^pyrN^Me₂){NB(NAr'CH)₂} (17). The Ti-N_im distances in compounds with the NB(NAr'CH)₂ ligand were comparable to those of the corresponding arylimides. Dialkyl- or diaryl-substituted borylamines do not undergo the analogous double-deprotonation or imide-amine exchange reactions. Reaction of (Cp″₂Ti)₂(μ₂:η¹,η¹-N₂) with N₃BMes₂ gave the base-free, diarylborylimide Cp″₂Ti(NBMes₂) (26) by an oxidative route; this compound has a relatively long Ti-N_im bond and large Cp″-Ti-Cp″ angle. Reaction of 16 with H₂N^tBu formed equilibrium mixtures with H₂NB(NAr'CH)₂ and Cp*Ti(hpp)(N^tBu) (Δ_rG = -1.0 kcal mol^-1). In contrast, the dialkylborylimide Cp*Ti{MeC(NⁱPr)₂}(NBC₈H₁₄) (2) reacted quantitatively with H₂N^tBu to give the corresponding tert-butylimide and borylamine. The electronic structures and imide-amine exchange reactions of half-sandwich and sandwich titanium borylimides have been evaluated using density functional theory (DFT), supported by quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, and placed more generally in context with the well-established alkyl- and arylimides and hydrazides. The calculations find that Ti-N_im bonds for borylimides are stronger and more covalent than in their organoimido or hydrazido analogues, and are strongest for alkyl- and arylborylimides. Borylamine-tert-butylimide exchange reactions fail for H₂NBR₂ (R = hydrocarbyl) but not for H₂NB(NAr'CH)₂ because the increased strength of the new Ti-N_im bond for the former is outweighed by the increased net H-N bond strengths in the borylamine. Variation of the Ti-N_im bond length over short distances is dominated by π-interactions with any appropriate orbital on the N_im atom organic substituent. However, over the full range of imides and hydrazides studied, overall bond energies do not correlate with bond length but with the Ti-N_im σ-bond character and the orthogonal π-interaction.

Imido-pyridine Ti(IV) compounds: synthesis of unusual imido-amido heterobimetallic derivatives

The reaction of lithiated picolines and [TiCl3(η(5)-C5Me5)] leads to several bridging or terminal imido compounds, each of which can be selectively formed by controlling the stoichiometry and temperature. Specifically, the dinuclear imido-bridged [TiCl(η(5)-C5Me5)(μ-NR)]2 (1a, NR = 2-imido-3-picoline; 1b, NR = 2-imido-5-picoline) species and the unusual Ti-Li imido-amido heterobimetallic complex [{Li(THF)}{Ti(η(5)-C5Me5)(NR)(NHR)2}] (2a, NR = 2-imido-3-picoline; 2b, NR = 2-imido-5-picoline) were isolated. Compounds 2 are in effect the first structurally characterized examples of titanium(IV) coordinated to terminal imido-pyridines. DFT-D calculations for 2a denote a multiple bond character between titanium and the imido ligand and a strong polarization of the electron density by the alkali cation in spite of the lack of intermetallic bonding.

Mixed amido-cyclopentadienyl group 4 metal complexes

Two different kinds of nitrogen ligands and two Cp ligands with different electronic and steric effects were employed in order to demonstrate variability of the group 4 metal coordination spheres.
