Abstract
Trinuclear aluminum complexes bearing bipyrazoles were synthesized, and their catalytic activity for ε-caprolactone (CL) polymerization was investigated. DBu2Al3Me5 exhibited higher catalytic activity than did the dinuclear aluminum complex LBu2Al2Me4 (16 times as high for CL polymerization; [CL]:[DBu2Al3Me5]:[BnOH] = 100:0.5:5, [DBu2Al3Me5] = 10 mM, conversion 93% after 18 min at room temperature). Density functional theory calculations revealed a polymerization mechanism in which CL first approached the central Al atom and then moved to an external Al. The coordinated CL ring was opened because the repulsion of two tert-butyl groups on the ligands pushed an alkoxide initiator on an external Al to initiate CL. In these trinuclear Al catalysts, the central Al plays a role in monomer capture and then collaborates with the external Al to activate CL, accelerating polymerization.

Abstract
The reactivity and the reaction conditions of the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and L-lactide (LA) initiated by aluminum ketiminate complexes have been shown differently. Herein, we account for the observation by studying the mechanisms on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculations show that the ring-opening polymerization of ε-CL and LA are rate-determined by the benzoxide insertion and the C–O bond cleavage step, respectively. Theoretical computations suggest that the reaction temperature of L–LA polymerization should be higher than that of ε-CL one, in agreement with the experimental data. To provide a reasonable interpretation of the experimental results and to give an insight into the catalyst design, the influence of the electronic, steric, and thermal effects on the polymerization behaviors will be also discussed in this study.

Abstract
The stoichiometric reactions of 8-(2,6-R¹-4-R²-anilide)-5,6,7-trihydroquinoline (LH) with AlR₃ (R = Me or Et) afforded the aluminum complexes LAlR₂ (Al1⁻Al5,Al1: R¹ = iPr, R² = H, R = Me; Al2: R¹ = Me, R² = H, R = Me; Al3: R¹ = H, R² = H, R = Me; Al4: R¹ = Me, R² = Me, R = Me; Al5: R¹ = Me, R² = Me, R = Et) in high yields. All aluminum complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The molecular structures of complexes Al4 and Al5 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractions and revealed a distorted tetrahedral geometry at aluminum. In the presence of BnOH, complexes Al1⁻Al5 efficiently initiated the ring-opening homopolymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and rac-lactide (rac-LA), respectively, in a living/controlled manner.

Abstract
The synthesis of titanium(IV), zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) complexes of Trost's semi-crown ligand is described. All complexes were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and mass spectroscopy. The molecular structures of the representative complexes 2, 3 and 4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The X-ray diffraction studies reveal that complexes 2, 3 and 4 crystallized in an orthorhombic crystal system. Complexes 2 and 3 have a monomeric structure in the solid state with distorted octahedral geometry around the metal center, whereas complex 4 was found to crystallize in a trimeric structure bridging with an oxygen atom, where the geometry around the titanium is distorted trigonal bipyramidal. The activities and stereoselectivities of these complexes toward the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactides (L-LA and rac-LA) and ε-caprolactone (CL) have been investigated. Complexes 1–4 were found to be efficient single-component initiators for the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters and yielded high molecular weight polymers (Mn) with narrow molecular weight distributions (MWD).The microstructure of the resultant polylactides (PLAs) from rac-LA was determined. Complexes 2 and 3 afforded isotactic-enriched PLA (Pm = 0.78–0.71) with narrow MWD (1.07–1.04), on the other hand complexes 1 and 4 produced atactic PLA. Kinetic and post polymerization studies confirm that the polymerization proceeds through the coordination–insertion mechanism.

Heteroleptic tin(II) initiators for the ring-opening (co)polymerization of lactide and trimethylene carbonate: mechanistic insights from experiments and computations. Chemistry 2013; 19:13463-78. Abstract
The tin(II) complexes {LO(x)}Sn(X) ({LO(x)}(-) =aminophenolate ancillary) containing amido (1-4), chloro (5), or lactyl (6) coligands (X) promote the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters. Complex 6, which models the first insertion of L-lactide, initiates the living ROP of L-LA on its own, but the amido derivatives 1-4 require the addition of alcohol to do so. Upon addition of one to ten equivalents of iPrOH, precatalysts 1-4 promote the ROP of trimethylene carbonate (TMC); yet, hardly any activity is observed if tert-butyl (R)-lactate is used instead of iPrOH. Strong inhibition of the reactivity of TMC is also detected for the simultaneous copolymerization of L-LA and TMC, or for the block copolymerization of TMC after that of L-LA. Experimental and computational data for the {LO(x)}Sn(OR)complexes (OR=lactyl or lactidyl) replicating the active species during the tin(II)-mediated ROP of L-LA demonstrate that the formation of a five-membered chelate is largely favored over that of an eight-membered one, and that it constitutes the resting state of the catalyst during this (co)polymerization. Comprehensive DFT calculations show that, out of the four possible monomer insertion sequences during simultaneous copolymerization of L-LA and TMC: 1) TMC then TMC, 2) TMC then L-LA, 3) L-LA then L-LA, and 4) L-LA then TMC, the first three are possible. By contrast, insertion of L-LA followed by that of TMC (i.e., insertion sequence 4) is endothermic by +1.1 kcal mol(-1), which compares unfavorably with consecutive insertions of two L-LA units (i.e., insertion sequence 3) (-10.2 kcal mol(-1)). The copolymerization of L-LA and TMC thus proceeds under thermodynamic control.

Abstract
A series of group 4 metal tetracarbamates M(O(2)CNR(2))(4) (M = Ti, R = Et, 1a; M = Zr, R = Et, 1b; (i)Pr, 1c; M = Hf, R = Et, 1d; R = (i)Pr, 1e) were studied as catalytic precursors in the solution polymerization of rac-lactide. The titanium complex but not the zirconium and hafnium ones increase the activity by addition of (i)PrOH. The structure of the carbamato ligand markedly influences the molar mass of polymer; the complexes with isopropyl carbamato ligands produced PLA with molar masses up to 94,000 g mol(-1). The main mechanistic aspects of the initial stages of the polymerization reactions were outlined by spectroscopic and computational analyses. In the case of zirconium and hafnium complexes, an interaction between a carbamato ligand and the CH unit of one lactide molecule is established at room temperature. This interaction is followed by the high temperature proton transfer from the lactide to the carbamato O-atom, affording a catalytic active alkoxy complex with release of CO(2) and NHR(2). The polymerization mediated by Ti(O(2)CNEt(2))(4) involves the release of a radical fragment [O(2)CNEt(2)]˙, with consequent generation of a Ti(III) center. The propagating chain is an alcoholate ligand coordinated to a Ti(IV) centre and containing a radical mainly localized at the tail of the chain (DFT, EPR).
