Synthesis of a Square-Planar Rhodium Alkylidene N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex and Its Reactivity Toward Alkenes

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Chemo-Selective Carbene Insertion into C-H Bond of Styrene over Cyclopropanation: C-C Bond Formation

The C-C bond formation reactions are important in organic synthesis. Heck reaction is known to arylate the terminal carbon of olefins; however, direct alkylation of the terminal carbon of olefin is limited. Herein, we report a novel ruthenium-catalyzed selective cross-coupling reaction of styrene and α-diazoesters to form a new C-C bond over cyclopropanation via the C-H insertion process for the first time. Using this novel methodology, a wide variety of substrates have been utilized and a variety of α-vinylated benzylic esters and densely functionalized olefins have been synthesized with good stereoselectivity under mild reaction conditions. The overall reaction process proceeds through the carbene insertion into styrene to form the desired products in good to excellent yields with proper stereoselectivity. The selective C-H inserted product, wide substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance are the best features of this work.

Halogenation of A-frame μ-carbido complexes: a diamagnetic rhodium(ii) carbido complex

Chlorination of the new μ-carbido [Rh₂(μ-C)Cl₂(μ-dppf)₂] (dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene) affords the dirhodium(ii) complex [Rh₂(μ-C)Cl₄(μ-dppf)₂] the carbido bridge of which can only be adequately described by delocalised bonding.

A Stable N-Hetero-Rh-Metallacyclic Silylene

A cyclic (amino)metal-substituted dicoordinated silylene derivative has been synthesized and fully characterized. Of particular interest is that the N-hetero-Rh^I -metallacyclic silylene exhibits a distorted tetrahedral geometry around the rhodium atom and a considerably shortened Si-Rh bond (2.138 Å) compared to classical Si-Rh single bonds (ca. 2.30-2.35 Å). A theoretical investigation reveals that the geometrical deviation around the rhodium center from the classical square-planar to a tetrahedral geometry increases the π-donating and σ-accepting character of the rhodium atom, thereby efficiently stabilizing the silylene moiety.

Moving from Classical Ru-NHC to Neutral or Charged Rh-NHC Based Catalysts in Olefin Metathesis

Considering the versatility of oxidation states of rhodium together with the successful background of ruthenium-N-heterocyclic carbene based catalysts in olefin metathesis, it is envisaged the exchange of the ruthenium of the latter catalysts by rhodium, bearing an open-shell neutral rhodium center, or a +1 charged one. In the framework of in silico experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to plot the first catalytic cycle that as a first step includes the release of the phosphine. DFT is, in this case, the tool that allows the discovery of the less endergonic reaction profile from the precatalytic species for the neutral catalyst with respect to the corresponding ruthenium one; increasing the endergonic character when dealing with the charged system.

Pyridine versus acetonitrile coordination in rhodium–N-heterocyclic carbene square-planar complexes

Experimental and theoretical studies on the factors that control the coordination chemistry of N-donor ligands in square-planar complexes of the type RhCl(NHC)L¹L² (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) are presented.

Synthesis and dynamic behaviour of zwitterionic [M(η(6)-C6H5-BPh3)(coe)2] (M = Rh, Ir) cyclooctene complexes

The synthesis and structural characterization of zwitterionic [(η(6)-C6H5-BPh3)M(coe)2] (M = Rh, Ir) cyclooctene complexes is described. Both complexes exhibit an unusual exo-endo conformation of both cyclooctene ligands in the solid state. However, an equilibrium between the endo-endo and exo-endo rotational isomers arising from the hindered rotation about the metal-cyclooctene bond is observed in solution. Rotational barriers of around 65 kJ mol(-1) (Rh) and 84 kJ mol(-1) (Ir) have been determined by 2D EXSY NMR spectroscopy. The rotation process has also been studied by DFT calculations that showed that the dynamic behaviour is a consequence of the oscillation of the cyclooctene ligands about the metal-olefin bond instead of completing a full rotation.

Pyridine-enhanced head-to-tail dimerization of terminal alkynes by a rhodium-N-heterocyclic-carbene catalyst

A general regioselective rhodium-catalyzed head-to-tail dimerization of terminal alkynes is presented. The presence of a pyridine ligand (py) in a Rh-N-heterocyclic-carbene (NHC) catalytic system not only dramatically switches the chemoselectivity from alkyne cyclotrimerization to dimerization but also enhances the catalytic activity. Several intermediates have been detected in the catalytic process, including the π-alkyne-coordinated Rh(I) species [RhCl(NHC)(η(2)-HC≡CCH2Ph)(py)] (3) and [RhCl(NHC){η(2)-C(tBu)≡C(E)CH=CHtBu}(py)] (4) and the Rh(III)-hydride-alkynyl species [RhClH{-C≡CSi(Me)3}(IPr)(py)2] (5). Computational DFT studies reveal an operational mechanism consisting of sequential alkyne C-H oxidative addition, alkyne insertion, and reductive elimination. A 2,1-hydrometalation of the alkyne is the more favorable pathway in accordance with a head-to-tail selectivity.
