Abstract
An extensive series of 128 halogen-bonded complexes formed by trimethylphosphine oxide and various F-, Cl-, Br-, I- and At-containing molecules, ranging in energy from 0 to 124 kJ/mol, is studied by DFT calculations in vacuum. The results reveal correlations between R–X⋅⋅⋅O=PMe3 halogen bond energy ΔE, X⋅⋅⋅O distance r, halogen’s σ-hole size, QTAIM parameters at halogen bond critical point and changes of spectroscopic parameters of phosphine oxide upon complexation, such as 31P NMR chemical shift, ΔδP, and P=O stretching frequency, Δν. Some of the correlations are halogen-specific, i.e., different for F, Cl, Br, I and At, such as ΔE(r), while others are general, i.e., fulfilled for the whole set of complexes at once, such as ΔE(ΔδP). The proposed correlations could be used to estimate the halogen bond properties in disordered media (liquids, solutions, polymers, glasses) from the corresponding NMR and IR spectra.

Abstract
The catalytic activities of eight copper(i) halide clusters assembled from copper(i) halide and ferrocenyltelluroethers, 1-8, were investigated in C-N formation under various conditions. A catalytic procedure using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-400) as a greener alternative organic solvent has been developed. The PEG-400/5 system can achieve 99% targeted yield with a mild reaction temperature and short reaction time. After the isolation of the products by extraction with diethyl ether, this PEG-400/cluster system could be easily recycled. Spectroscopic studies elucidate a stepwise mechanism: firstly, proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) involving the transfer of an electron from Cu+ and a proton from imidazole results in the formation of a labile penta-coordinated Cu2+ and aryl radical; the following effective electron transfer from the ferrocene unit reduces Cu2+ and forms the target product; finally, the ferrocenium unit is reduced by the I- anion. The merits of this eco-friendly synthesis are the efficient utilization of reagents and easy recyclability.

Abstract
Copper-complex catalyzed coupling reactions have been widely applied in the production of many important organic moieties from a synthetic perspective. In this work, a series of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, employing the B3LYP + IDSCRF/DZVP method, have been performed for a typical CuCl-catalyzed C-O cross-coupling reaction. The novel reaction mechanism was reported as four successive processes: oxidative radical generation (ORG) or oxidative addition (OA), hydrogen abstraction (HA), C-H activation/reductive elimination, and separation of product and recycling of catalyst (SP & RC). Our calculations provided a deep understanding on the dissimilar chemical activities associated with varying the oxidants used; detailed energy profile analyses suggested that the first oxidation process could proceed via either of the two competing channels (ORG and OA mechanisms) which is the basis to explain the different experimental yields. In addition, our molecular modelling gave theoretical evidence that Cu(ii) → Cu(i) reduction by solvent DMF (and a water molecule) might serve as a preliminary step to produce some more active Cu(i) species that could subsequently be oxidized into Cu(iii) favorably. In contrast, the Cu(ii) → Cu(iii) direct pathway was estimated to be prohibited from thermodynamics. All the calculation results in this work are parallel with the experimental observations.

Abstract
A series of experimental studies, along with DFT calculations, are reported that provide a detailed view into the mechanism of Ullmann coupling of phenols with aryl halides in the presence of catalysts generated from Cu(I) and bidentate, anionic ligands. These studies encompass catalysts containing anionic ligands formed by deprotonation of 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2-pyridylmethyl tert-butyl ketone, and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione. Three-coordinate, heteroleptic species [Cu(LX)OAr]- were shown by experiment and DFT calculations to be the most stable complexes in catalytic systems containing 8-hydroxyquinoline or 2-pyridylmethyl tert-butyl ketone and to be generated reversibly in the system containing 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione. These heteroleptic complexes were characterized by a combination of 19F NMR, 1H NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, as well as ESI-MS. The heteroleptic complexes generated in situ react with iodoarenes to form biaryl ethers in high yields without evidence for an aryl radical intermediate. Measurements of 13C/12C isotope effects showed that oxidative addition of the iodoarene occurs irreversibly. This information, in combination with the kinetic data, shows that oxidative addition occurs to the [Cu(LX)OAr]- complexes and is turnover-limiting. A Hammett analysis of the effect of phenoxide electronic properties on the rate of the reaction of [Cu(LX)OAr]- with iodotoluene also is consistent with oxidative addition of the iodoarene to an anionic phenoxide complex. Calculations by DFT suggest that this oxidative addition is followed by dissociation of I- and reductive elimination of the biaryl ether from the resulting neutral Cu(III) complex.

Abstract
A series of copper(I) alkylamide complexes have been synthesised; copper(I) dicyclohexylamide (1), copper(I) 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide (2), copper(I) pyrrolidide (3), copper(I) piperidide (4), and copper(I) benzylamide (5). Their solid-state structures and structures in [D6 ]benzene solution are characterised, with the aggregation state in solution determined by a combination of DOSY NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Complexes 1, 2 and 4 are shown to exist as tetramers in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. In [D6 ]benzene solution, complexes 1, 2 and 5 were found by using (1) H DOSY NMR to exist in rapid equilibrium between aggregates with average aggregation numbers of 2.5, 2.4 and 3.3, respectively, at 0.05 M concentration. Conversely, distinct trimeric, tetrameric and pentameric forms of 3 and 4 were distinguishable by one-dimensional (1) H and (1) H DOSY NMR spectroscopy. Complexes 3-5 are found to react stoichiometrically with iodobenzene, in the presence or absence of 1,10-phenanthroline as an ancillary ligand, to give arylamine products indicative of their role as potential intermediates in the modified Ullmann reaction. The role of phenanthroline has also been explored both in the stoichiometric reaction and in the catalytic Ullmann protocol.

Abstract
Cu-catalysed arylation reactions devoted to the formation of C-C and C-heteroatom bonds (Ullmann-type couplings) have acquired great importance in the last decade. This review discusses the history and development of coupling reactions between aryl halides and various classes of nucleophiles, focusing mostly on the different mechanisms proposed through the years. Selected mechanistic investigations are treated more in depth than others. For example, evidence in favour or against radical mechanisms is discussed. Cu(I) and Cu(III) complexes involved in the Ullmann reaction and N/O selectivity in aminoalcohol arylation are discussed. A separate section has been dedicated to the synthesis of heterocyclic rings through intramolecular couplings. Finally, recent developments in green chemistry for these reactions, such as reactions in aqueous media and heterogeneous catalysis, have also been reviewed.

Abstract
We carried out an extensive survey of wave function and DFT methods to test their accuracy on geometries and dissociation energies of halogen bonds (XB). For that purpose, we built two benchmark sets (XB18 and XB51). Between the DFT methods, it was found that functionals with high exact exchange or long-range corrections were suitable for these dimers, especially M06-2X, ωB97XD, and double hybrids. Dispersion corrections tend to be detrimental, in spite of the fact that XB is considered a noncovalent interaction. Wave function techniques require heavy correlated methods (i.e., CCSD(T)) or parametrized ones (SCS-MP2 or SCS(MI)MP2). Heavy basis sets are needed to obtain high accuracy, such as aVQZ or aVTZ+CP, and ideally a CBS extrapolation. Relativistic ECPs are also important, even for the bromine based dimers. In addition, we explored some XB with new theoretical tools, the NCI ("Non-Covalent Interactions") method and the NOFF ("Natural Orbital Fukui Functions").
