Abstract
The reactivity of NiII and PdII olefin polymerization catalysts can be enhanced by introduction of electron-withdrawing substituents on the supporting ligands rendering the metal centers more electrophilic. Reported here is a comparison of ethylene polymerization activity of a classical salicyliminato nickel catalyst substituted with the powerful electron-withdrawing 2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium (trippy) group to the -CF3 analogue. The trippy substituent is substantially more electron-withdrawing (σmeta =0.63) than the trifluoromethyl group (σmeta =0.43) which results in a ca. 8-fold increase in catalytic turnover frequency. An additional advantage of trippy is the high steric bulk relative to the trifluoromethyl group. This feature results in a four-fold increase in polymer molecular weight owing to enhanced retardation of chain transfer. A significant increase in catalyst lifetime is observed as well.

Abstract
Facile preparation of the α- C-vinyl and -aryl glycosides has been developed via mild Ni-catalyzed reductive vinylation and arylation of C1-glycosyl halides with vinyl/aryl halides. Good to high α-selectivities were achieved for C-glucosides, galactosides, maltoside, and mannosides, which were dictated by the employment of pyridine type ligands. As such, the present work represents unprecedented control for a high level of α-selectivity for C-vinyl-glucosides using cross-coupling approaches and offers hitherto optimal α-selective preparation of C-aryl glucosides via catalyst-controlled coupling strategies.

Abstract
A family of mono(2-iminopyrrolyl) complexes with the general formula [Ni{κ2N,N'-5-(aryl)-NC4H2-2-C(H)[double bond, length as m-dash]N-2,6-(aryl)}(C6H5)(PPh3)] were obtained from the reaction of the sodium salts of the newly synthesised 5-aryl-2-(N-arylformimino)pyrroles with the square planar complex trans-[Ni(C6H5)(PPh3)2Cl]. These new iminopyrrole ligand precursors, designed with increasing bulkiness and different electronic properties, and their corresponding nickel(ii) complexes were characterised by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and their structural features were analysed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The nickel complexes were tested as aluminium-free catalysts for the polymerisation of ethylene, at low to moderate pressures and different temperatures and in the absence or presence of the phosphine scavenger [Ni(COD)2], giving rise to catalytic activities in the range of 3.61-73.12 kgPE molNi-1 h-1 bar-1. The polyethylene products formed in these catalytic reactions were characterised by GPC/SEC and NMR spectroscopy. Generally, low molecular weight (Mn 510-1300 g mol-1) low viscosity oils were obtained, presenting high branching degrees (80-125 branches per 1000 C atoms), which are characteristic of hyperbranched polyethylene products. In particular, polymerisation reactions using catalyst 7 led to higher viscosity oils with molecular weights between 11 000 and 20 000 g mol-1, and branching degrees of 100-120 branches per 1000 C atoms.

Abstract
Eight bis-(salicylaldehyde-benzhydrylimino)nickel complexes with different electron groups (Ni1–Ni8), Ni{(3-R1)(5-R2)C6H2(O)CHNCH(C6H5)2}2, (R1 = H, R2 = H, Ni1; R1 = H, R2 = CH3, Ni2; R1 = H, R2 = OCH3, Ni3; R1 = H, R2 = Br, Ni4; R1 = CH3, R2 = H, Ni5; R1 = OCH3, R2 = H, Ni6; R1 = Br, R2 = Br, Ni7; R1 = Cl, R2 = Cl, Ni8), were synthesized and their crystal structures were characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The results revealed that Ni1–Ni6 belong to the monoclinic system (space group P2(1)/n), Ni7 belongs to the monoclinic system (space group C2/c) and Ni8 belongs to the triclinic system (space group P1̄). All nickel complexes exhibited high activities (0.46–2.07 × 106 gpolymer molNi−1 h−1) toward norbornene homopolymerization, and a strong electron-withdrawing group on the salicylaldimino aromatic ring can enhance the catalytic activity and favor polymerization. Ni1 and Ni2 exhibited high activities (0.55–2.40 × 105 gpolymer molNi−1 h−1) toward copolymerization of norbornene and 1-hexene in the presence of B(C6F5)3. The 1-hexene content in the copolymers could be controlled up to 7.98–12.50% by varying the comonomer feed ratio of 1-hexene from 10 to 50%. It is observed that when the 5-position of the salicylaldimino aromatic ring has a substituent (–CH3), the 1-hexene insertion rate is lower than that without a substituent. In addition, the polymers showed high molecular weights (1.5–2.4 × 105 g mol−1) and narrow molecular weight distributions (1.62–1.89). The obtained polymers were also verified to be amorphous copolymers and had high thermal stability, good solubility and optical transparency. Ni(ii) complexes were successfully synthesized and characterized, and were highly active toward (co)polymerization of norbornene, and the 1-hexene content could be controlled.![]()

Abstract
Neutral nickel complexes containing an anilinobenzoic acid methyl ester ligand are prepared and applied for the ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with polar monomers. The complex C2 containing isopropyl substituent on the aniline ligand conducts ethylene polymerization with high activity and good thermal stability. Most importantly, the catalyst promotes the copolymerization of ethylene and polar monomers with high activity (up to 277 kg·mol-1·h-1), affording ester-functionalized semicrystalline polyethylene with reasonable polar monomer content (up to 3.20 mol %).
