Functionalised N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands in Bimetallic Architectures

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become immensely successful ligands in coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis due to their strong terminal σ-donor properties. However, by targeting NHC ligands with additional functionalisation, a new area of NHC coordination chemistry has developed that has enabled NHCs to be used to build up bimetallic and multimetallic architectures. This minireview covers the development of functionalised NHC ligands that incorporate additional donor sites in order to coordinate two or more metal atoms. This can be through the N-atom of the NHC ring, through a donor group attached to the N-atom or the carbon backbone, coordination of the π-bond or an annulated π-donor on the backbone, or through direct metalation of the backbone.

Janus bis(NHCs) tuned by heteroatom-bridge oxidation states

Synthesis of the first tricyclic bis(carbenes) with facially opposed imidazole-2-ylidenes and two linking phosphorus centres in different oxidation states is presented using a modular, high-yield synthetic route. The formation of homo bimetallic coinage metal complexes provides a glimpse on their potential use.

Recent Advances in Imidazoliumyl-Substituted Phosphorus Compounds

This review aims to highlight the recent developments in the chemistry of selected imidazoliumyl-substituted phosphorus compounds. The synthetic approaches for their preparation with phosphorus in various oxidation states and coordination environments are discussed. Their intriguing properties and versatile chemistry strongly depends on the bonding motif at the P atoms, which is given special focus.

Starbon/High-Amylose Corn Starch-Supported N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Iron(III) Catalyst for Conversion of Fructose into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Iron-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes (Fe-NHCs) have come to prominence because of their applicability in diverse catalytic reactions, ranging from C-C cross-coupling and C-X bond formation to substitution, reduction, polymerization, and dehydration reactions. The detailed synthesis, characterization, and application of novel heterogeneous Fe-NHC catalysts immobilized on mesoporous expanded high-amylose corn starch (HACS) and Starbon 350 (S350) for facile fructose conversion into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is reported. Both catalyst types showed good performance for the dehydration of fructose to HMF when the reaction was tested at 100 °C with varying time (10 min, 20 min, 0.5 h, 1 h, 3 h and 6 h). For Fe-NHC/S350, the highest HMF yield was 81.7 % (t=0.5 h), with a TOF of 169 h^-1 , fructose conversion of 95 %, and HMF selectivity of 85.7 %, whereas for Fe-NHC/expanded HACS, the highest yield was 86 % (t=0.5 h), with a TOF of 206 h^-1 , fructose conversion of 87 %, and HMF selectivity of 99 %. Iron loadings of 0.26 and 0.30 mmol g^-1 were achieved for Fe-NHC/expanded starch and Fe-NHC/S350, respectively.

Synthesis and reactions of C-phosphanylated thiazol-2-thiones

Regioselective synthesis of the P(iii) substituted thiazole-2-thione I is presented. Oxidation of I resulted in P(V) chalcogenide thiazole-2-thiones (E = O, S, Se). Desulfurization of I (E = O) using hydrogenperoxide led to the first C-phosphanoyl thiazolium salt II. Deprotonation of II and reaction with cyclooctadiene rhodium(i) chloride dimer yielded thiazole-2-ylidene rhodium(i) complex III.

Cationic 5-phosphonio-substituted N-heterocyclic carbenes

Cationic NHCs featuring a phosphonium moiety in the 5-position are prepared from the reaction of imidazolium salts with a tert. phosphane. They are used as ligands for the preparation of transition metal complexes, dehydrogenation reactions of prim. and sec. phosphanes and the preparation of a N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO).
