Base-Promoted Aryl Carbon–Iodine and Carbon–Bromine Bond Cleavage with Rhodium Porphyrin Complexes: Scope and Mechanism

Interactions of arylhydroxylamines and alkylaldoximes with a rhodium porphyrin

Heme enzymes are involved in the binding and metabolism of hydroxylamine (RNHOH) and aldoxime (RCH=NOH) compounds (R = H, alkyl, aryl). We report the synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of a metalloporphyrin in complex with an arylhydroxylamine, namely that of (TPP)Rh(PhNHOH)(C6H4Cl) (TPP = tetraphenylpophryinato dianion). The crystal structure reveals, in addition to N-binding of PhNHOH to Rh, the presence of an intramolecular H-bond between the hydroxylamine -OH proton and a porphyrin N-atom. Results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations support the presence of this intramolecular H-bond in this global minimum structure, and a natural bond order (NBO) analysis reveals that this H-bond comprises a donor π N=C (porphyrin) to acceptor σ* O-H (hydroxylamine) interaction of 2.32 kcal/mol. While DFT calculations predict the presence of similar intramolecular H-bond interactions in the related aldoxime complexes (TPP)Rh(RCH=NOH)(C6H4Cl) in their global minima structures, the X-ray crystal structure obtained for the (TPP)Rh(CH3(CH2)2CH=NOH)(C6H4Cl) complex is consistent with the local (non-global) minima conformation that does not have this intramolecular H-bond interaction.

Hydrodebromination of allylic and benzylic bromides with water catalyzed by a rhodium porphyrin complex

Hydrodebromination of allylic and benzylic bromides was successfully achieved by a rhodium porphyrin complex catalyst using water as the hydrogen source without a sacrificial reductant. Mechanistic investigations suggest that bromine atom abstraction via a rhodium porphyrin metalloradical operates to give the rhodium porphyrin alkyl species and the subsequent hydrolysis of the rhodium porphyrin alkyl species to a hydrocarbon product is a key step to harness the hydrogen from water.

Rational Design of Emissive NIR-Absorbing Chromophores: Rh(III) Porphyrin-Aza-BODIPY Conjugates with Orthogonal Metal-Carbon Bonds

The facile synthesis of Group 9 Rh(III) porphyrin-aza-BODIPY conjugates that are linked through an orthogonal Rh-C(aryl) bond is reported. The conjugates combine the advantages of the near-IR (NIR) absorption and intense fluorescence of aza-BODIPY dyes with the long-lived triplet states of transition metal rhodium porphyrins. Only one emission peak centered at about 720 nm is observed, irrespective of the excitation wavelength, demonstrating that the conjugates act as unique molecules rather than as dyads. The generation of a locally excited (LE) state with intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) character has been demonstrated by solvatochromic effects in the photophysical properties, singlet oxygen quantum yields in polar solvents, and by the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In nonpolar solvents, the Rh(III) conjugates exhibit strong aza-BODIPY-centered fluorescence at around 720 nm (ΦF =17-34 %), and negligible singlet oxygen generation. In polar solvents, enhancements of the singlet-oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ =19-27 %, λex =690 nm) have been observed. Nanosecond pulsed time-resolved absorption spectroscopy confirms that relatively long-lived triplet excited states are formed. The synthetic methodology outlined herein provides a useful strategy for the assembly of functional materials that are highly desirable for a wide range of applications in material science and biomedical fields.

Optical properties and electronic structures of axially-ligated group 9 porphyrins

A series of group 9 metal tetra-(p-tolyl)-porphyrin ( M(ttp) , M = Co(II) , Rh(III) , Ir(III)) complexes with axial phenyl substituents have been synthesized and characterized. An aryl bromide cleavage reaction of transition metal complexes was used to prepare the complexes from Co(ttp) , Rh(ttp) Cl and Ir(ttp)COCl , respectively. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy and TD-DFT calculations have been used to study trends in the optical spectra and electronic structures. The effect of introducing different para-substituents on the phenyl substituents was examined. During fluorescence emission studies, phosphorescence was observed for the Ir(III) complexes in the near infrared (NIR) region.
