Switching by Photochemical trans–cis Isomerization of Azobenzene Substituents in Organoplatinum Complexes

Iron complexes of bridging azo ligands in aqueous solution: changes in the thermal switching mechanism on coordination and oxidation state of metal centres

Three azobenzenes CN(C₆H₄)-NN-(C₅H₄N) (py-iso), CN(C₆H₄)-NN-(C₆H₄)CN (cyano-iso) and CN(C₆H₄)-NN-(C₆H₄)NC (iso-iso) with good coordinating groups (pyridine, phenylcyano or phenylisocyano) at the ends of the diazenyl unit have been synthesized and fully characterised. These compounds have been used as ligands in the synthesis of water-soluble metallic species by coordination to {Fe^II(CN)₅^3-} units, either in one or two of the anchoring groups of the derivatives. Both the azo derivatives and their complexes are photochemically active with respect to their trans-to-cis isomerisation process. Their cis-to-trans reverse thermal reaction has been thoroughly studied as a function of the donor groups, solvent, temperature and pressure, in order to gain insight into the rotation or inversion mechanisms involved in the process. A comparison of the isomerisation mechanism between the iron complexes and the corresponding free ligands revealed an interesting fine tuning of the process on coordination of the {Fe^II(CN)₅^3-} moieties, which may even produce, in some cases, non-photoswitchable species containing typically photoactive units.

A review on the chemistry of novel platinum chelates based on azo-azomethine ligands

Numerous platinum group metals (PGMs) complexes contain azo-azomethine-based ligands. Azo-azomethine ligands are N-donor ligands that have extended conjugated π-bonded systems and both azo (–N=N–) and aldimine (–C=N–) functions in their structure. Plenty of platinum (Pt) complexes with azo-imine ligands have been prepared and characterized. Various multidentate azo-imine ligands coordinated with different platinum metal substrates afforded structurally diverse platinum chelates. Nonetheless, many azo-imine-based platinum complexes demonstrated a wide range of biological activities, photo-switchable properties, and redox activities. The review encompasses a general overview of platinum complexes with versatile azo-azomethine ligands, their synthetic protocol, spectroscopic and structural features, chemical reactivity, and multipurpose applications in different areas.

Regulation of the Switchable Luminescence of Tridentate Platinum(II) Complexes by Photoisomerization

Organoplatinum (II) complexes are promising candidates for the construction of smart supramolecular materials due to their unique flat structures. This accompanied by intriguing luminescent properties, prompts the molecules to aggregate after external stimuli. Nevertheless, the utilization of photo-responsive subunits to modulate their assemble behaviors and functions are still rarely explored. In this work, azobenzene (azo)-appended tridentate platinum (II) complexes with different linkers have been designed and synthesized. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and metal-metal interactions were finely controlled through the tiny alteration of the linkers, which was found to play a vital role in self-assembly, and photophysical and photoisomerization properties. Some of them exhibited dual emission bands originating from metal-perturbed triplet intraligand (3IL) and metal-metal to ligand charge transfer (3MMLCT) excited states due to the different intermolecular interactions. Based on this, the manipulation of switchable luminescence as well as the controllable morphologies have been realized by photoisomerization.

Isomerization of p,p'-Diiodoazobenzene Controlled by the Surface Plasmon-Assisted Reaction

Based on a SERS study, the plasmon-assisted coupling reaction of p-iodoaniline (PIAN) to p,p'-diiodoazobenzene was investigated. This model plasmon-assisted reaction exhibits an outstanding SERS performance with the limit of detection as low as 10-13 M. Under low concentrations, the control of the cis-trans isomerization of p,p'-diiodoazobenzene was achieved by characterizing the Raman peak intensity at 1432 cm-1 of the coupling reaction catalytic product. We present the regulation strategy for the isomerization of azobenzene derivatives enabled here, through the controlled adjustment of reactant concentration, and expand the application of SERS technique.

Direct Imaging of Photoswitching Molecular Conformations Using Individual Metal Atom Markers

Photoswitching behavior of individual organic molecules was imaged by annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) using a highly electron beam transparent graphene support. Photoswitching azobenzene derivatives with ligands at each end containing single transition-metal atoms (Pt) were designed (Pt-complex), and the distance between the strong ADF-STEM contrast from the two Pt atoms in each Pt-complex is used to track molecular length changes. UV irradiation was used to induce photoswitching of the Pt complex on graphene, and we show that the measured Pt-Pt distances within isolated molecules decrease from ∼2.1 nm to ∼1.4 nm, indicative of a trans-to- cis isomerization. Light illumination of the Pt-complex on the graphene support also caused their diffusion out from initial clusters to the surrounding area of graphene, indicating that the light-activated mobilization overcomes the intermolecular van der Waals interactions. This approach shows how individual isolated heavy metal atoms can be included as markers into complex molecules to track their structural changes using ADF-STEM on graphene supports, providing an effective method to study a diverse range of complex organic materials at the single molecule level.

Photoswitchable and pH responsive organoplatinum(ii) complexes with azopyridine ligands

Several platinum(ii) complexes with ligands containing azo groups have been prepared and structurally characterised, and their photoswitching between trans and cis azo group isomers has been studied. The azo groups in the cationic complexes [PtMe(bipy)(4-NC₅H₄-N[double bond, length as m-dash]N-4-C₆H₄X)][PF₆], X = H, OH or NMe₂, and in the dicationic complex [Pt(bipy)(4-H₂NC₆H₄-N[double bond, length as m-dash]N-C₆H₅)₂][OTf]₂ undergo trans to cis photoswitching on irradiation at 365 nm. The complex [PtMe(bipy)(4-NC₅H₄-N[double bond, length as m-dash]N-4-C₆H₄NMe)₂][PF₆] also exhibits a reversible halochromic effect on protonation to give the dicationic complex [PtMe(bipy)(4-NC₅H₄-NH[double bond, length as m-dash]N-4-C₆H₄NMe₂]²⁺. The nature of the frontier orbitals in the platinum(ii) complexes depends on the charge on the complex and on the degree of metal-ligand π-bonding.

Photoswitchable transition metal complexes with azobenzene-functionalized imine-based ligands: structural and kinetic analysis

Linking of Antitumor trans NHC-Pt(II) Complexes to G-Quadruplex DNA Ligand for Telomeric Targeting

G-quadruplex structures (G4) are promising anticancerous targets. A great number of small molecules targeting these structures have already been identified through biophysical methods. In cellulo, some of them are able to target either telomeric DNA and/or some sequences involved in oncogene promotors, both resulting in cancer cell death. However, only a few of them are able to bind to these structures G4 irreversibly. Here we combine within the same molecule the G4-binding agent PDC (pyridodicarboxamide) with a N-heterocyclic carbene-platinum complex NHC-Pt already identified for its antitumor properties. The resulting conjugate platinum complex NHC-Pt-PDC stabilizes strongly G-quadruplex structures in vitro, with affinity slightly affected as compared to PDC. In addition, we show that the new conjugate binds preferentially and irreversibly the quadruplex form of the human telomeric sequence with a profile in a way different from that of NHC-Pt thereby indicating that the platination reaction is oriented by stacking of the PDC moiety onto the G4-structure. In cellulo, NHC-Pt-PDC induces a significant loss of TRF2 from telomeres that is considerably more important than the effect of its two components alone, PDC and NHC-Pt, respectively.

Photoswitchable organoplatinum complexes containing an azobenzene derivative of 3,6-di(2-pyridyl)pyridazine

The new, unsymmetrical azobenzene-tagged ligand 4-(4-azobenzene)-3,6-di(2-pyridyl)pyridazine, adpp, forms complexes with platinum(II) and platinum(IV), which exist as a mixture of geometrical isomers. The complexes are characterized primarily by their NMR spectra, while the structures of the ligand and its complexes [PtMe2(adpp)], [PtBrMe2(CH2C6H4-4-t-Bu)(adpp)], and [PtBrMe2(CH2C6H3-3,5-t-Bu2)(adpp)] have been structurally characterized. In solution, the compounds undergo easy photochemical trans−cis switching of the azobenzene group, with subsequent slow thermal isomerization back to the more stable trans-azobenzene isomer.

Light-responsive three-dimensional microstructures composed of azobenzene-based palladium complexes

We describe not only fleeting assembly of photoisomerizable azobenzene-based palladium complexes into microstructured crystalline architectures but also their light-responsive functions. A transformation in the crystalline morphology from two-dimensional (2D) parallelogram-like sheets to three-dimensional (3D) cuboid- or rhombus-like structures was achieved by changing the solvent from tetrahydrofuran (THF) to acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The sizes of the structures, ranging from a few hundred nanometers to several hundred micrometers, were also modified by varying the complex concentration. In stark contrast to the very stable 2D sheets in the THF-H2O suspensions, exposure of 3D structures in polar DMF-H2O suspensions to ultraviolet (UV) light led to fast disassembly of the structures into isolated metal complexes and further dissociation of free azobenzene ligands from the complexes. In acetone-H2O suspensions, interestingly, disassembly of 3D cuboid-like structures into isolated complex components occurred upon exposure to UV light without further dissociation of azobenzene ligands from the palladium complexes. Considering the photoisomerization ability of the azobenzene-based palladium complex in common organic solvents, the π-stacking interactions that support 3D structures are likely to be sufficiently weak that they might be broken by the UV-induced trans-to-cis isomerization in more polar solvent mixtures. As a consequence, disassembly proceeded under UV light irradiation. Moreover, the effect of solvent polarity on the UV-assisted dissociation (in DMF-H2O) may be associated with the coordination ability of solvent molecules with the metal center.
