Abstract
Fourteen new phenoxy-azo aluminium complexes comprising two series, namely, dimethyl{phenoxy-azo}aluminium complexes 1a-7a and monomethyl{phenoxy-azo}aluminium complexes 1b-7b, were successfully synthesised and characterised. The molecular structure of complex 4a, determined using X-ray diffraction analysis, displayed a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The 1H NMR spectrum of complex 5b revealed fluxional behaviour caused by isomeric transformation that occurs in the solution at room temperature. The activation parameters determined by lineshape analysis of variable-temperature 1H NMR spectra in toluene-d8 are as follows: ΔH‡ = 70.05 ± 1.19 kJ mol-1, ΔS‡ = 21.78 ± 3.58 J mol-1 K-1 and ΔG‡ (298 K) = 63.56 ± 0.11 kJ mol-1. All aluminium complexes are active initiators for the ring-opening polymerisation of rac-lactide, and the polymerisations proceeded in a controlled manner and were living. In comparison, the catalytic activity of the dimethyl{phenoxy-azo}aluminium complexes was insignificantly different from that of the corresponding monomethyl{phenoxy-azo}aluminium complexes. The steric factor of the ortho-phenoxy substituent was observed to exert a decelerating effect on the catalytic rate. Kinetic investigations revealed first-order dependency on both monomer and initiator concentrations. Comparative catalytic investigations conducted on phenoxy-azo aluminium and phenoxy-imine aluminium complexes revealed that the former complexes exhibited lower catalytic activity.

Abstract
Cobalt(III) and chromium(III) salophen chloride complexes were synthesized and tested for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides to obtain cyclic carbonates. The cat1, cat2, cat4, and cat5 complexes presented high catalytic activity without cocatalysts and are solvent-free at 100 °C, 8 bar, and 9 h. At these conditions, the terminal epoxides (1a-1k) were successfully converted into the corresponding cyclic carbonates with a maximum conversion of ∼99%. Moreover, cat5 was highlighted due to its capability of opening internal epoxides such as limonene oxide (1l) with a 36% conversion to limonene carbonate (2l), and from cyclohexene oxide (1m), cyclic trans-cyclohexene carbonate (2m) and poly(cyclohexene carbonate) were obtained with 15% and 85% selectivity, respectively. A study of the coupling reaction mechanism was proposed with the aid of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis, confirming the single-component behavior of the complexes through their ionization due to epoxide coordination. In addition, crystallographic analysis of cat1 single crystals grown in a saturated solution of pyridine helped to demonstrate that the substitution of chloride ion by pyridine ligands to form an octahedral coordination occurs (Py-cat1), supporting the proposed mechanism. Also, a recyclability study was performed for cat5, and a total turnover number of 952 was obtained with only minor losses in catalytic activity after five cycles.

Abstract
With sustainability at the forefront of current polymerisation research, the typically earth-abundant, inexpensive and low-toxicity main group metals are attractive candidates for catalysis. Main group metals have been exploited in a broad range of polymerisations, ranging from classical alkene polymerisation to the synthesis of new bio-derived and degradable polyesters and polycarbonates via ring-opening polymerisation and ring-opening copolymerisation. This tutorial review highlights efficient polymerisation catalysts based on Group 1, Group 2, Zn and Group 13 metals. Key mechanistic pathways and catalyst developments are discussed, including tailored ligand design, heterometallic cooperativity, bicomponent systems and careful selection of the polymerisation conditions, all of which can be used to fine-tune the metal Lewis acidity and the metal-alkyl bond polarity.

Abstract
Group 13 metal complexes have emerged as powerful catalysts for transforming CO2 into added-value products. However, direct comparisons of reactivity between Al, Ga, and In catalysts are rare. We report aluminum (1), gallium (2), and indium (3) complexes supported by a half-salen H[PNNO] ligand with a pendent phosphine donor and investigate their activity as catalysts for the copolymerization of CO2 and cyclohexene oxide. In solution, the P-donor is dissociated for the Al and Ga complexes while for the In complex it exhibits hemilabile behavior. The indium complex shows higher conversion and selectivity than the Al or Ga analogues. The mechanism of the reaction was studied by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy experiments as well as structural characterization of off-cycle catalytic intermediate indium trichloride complex [(PNNO)InCl3][TBA] (4). This study highlights the impact of a hemilabile phosphine group on group 13 metals and provides a detailed analysis of the initiation step in CO2/epoxide copolymerization reactions.

Abstract
Trinuclear aluminum complexes bearing bipyrazoles were synthesized, and their catalytic activity for ε-caprolactone (CL) polymerization was investigated. DBu2Al3Me5 exhibited higher catalytic activity than did the dinuclear aluminum complex LBu2Al2Me4 (16 times as high for CL polymerization; [CL]:[DBu2Al3Me5]:[BnOH] = 100:0.5:5, [DBu2Al3Me5] = 10 mM, conversion 93% after 18 min at room temperature). Density functional theory calculations revealed a polymerization mechanism in which CL first approached the central Al atom and then moved to an external Al. The coordinated CL ring was opened because the repulsion of two tert-butyl groups on the ligands pushed an alkoxide initiator on an external Al to initiate CL. In these trinuclear Al catalysts, the central Al plays a role in monomer capture and then collaborates with the external Al to activate CL, accelerating polymerization.

Abstract
Two series of monometallic aluminum complexes were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography: Al[L]X, where [L] = dimethylaminoethylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4,6-tert-butylphenolate) and X = Cl, OEt, and Al[L]2Cl, where [L] = 6-{[(2R,6R)-2,6-dimethyl-4-morpholino]methylene}-2,4-bis(tert-butyl)phenolate or 6-(piperidinomethylene)-2-(tert-butyl)-4-(methyl)phenolate. All the complexes, including the previously reported morpholinyl complex Al[L]Cl, where [L] = 4-(2-aminoethyl)morpholinylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4,6-tert-butylphenolate), were tested as catalysts for copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and CO2 in the presence and absence of PPNCl. When coupled with 1 equiv. PPNCl, the complexes exhibit similar activities and the best selectivity for poly(cyclohexenecarbonate) vs. the cyclic product, cyclohexene carbonate, was obtained with the morpholinyl complex (ca. 90%) whereas significantly lower selectivities (<1-63%) were obtained with the other complexes. Preliminary DFT calculations investigating this difference in selectivity were carried out by analyzing the aluminum partial atomic charges in the Al-carbonate intermediates.

Abstract
This is a comprehensive study of the effects of rationally designed hemilabile ligands on the stability, reactivity, and change in catalytic behavior of indium complexes. We report cationic alkyl indium complexes supported by a family of hemi-salen type ligands bearing hemilabile thiophenyl (2a), furfuryl (2b) and pyridyl (2c) pendant donor arms. Shelf-life and stability of these complexes followed the trend 2a < 2b < 2c, showing direct correlation to the affinity of the pendant donor group to the indium center. Reactivity towards polymerization of epichlorohydrin and cyclohexene oxide followed the trend 2a > 2b > 2c with control of polymerization following an inverse relationship to reactivity. Surprisingly, 2c polymerized racemic lactide without an external initiator, likely through an alkyl-initiated coordination-insertion mechanism.

Abstract
The utilization of carbon dioxide as a comonomer to produce polycarbonates has attracted a great deal of attention from both industrial and academic communities because it promises to replace petroleum-derived plastics and supports a sustainable environment. Significant progress in the copolymerization of cyclic ethers (e.g., epoxide, oxetane) and carbon dioxide has been made in recent decades, owing to the rapid development of catalysts. In this Review, the focus is to summarize and discuss recent advances in the development of homogeneous catalysts, including metal- and organo-based complexes, as well as the preparation of carbon dioxide-based block copolymer and functional polycarbonates.

Abstract
Compounds of Li, Na, K and Ca of a tetradentate amino-bis(phenolato) ligand were prepared. Bimetallic compounds formulated as M2[L](THF)n (where M = Na, n = 1 (1·THF) or Li, n = 1 (2·THF)) were synthesized via the reaction of H2[L] (where [L] = 2-pyridylmethylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methoxy-6-tert-butylphenolato) with sodium hydride or n-butyllithium, respectively, in THF. Monometallic complexes MH[L](THF)n (where M = Na, n = 1 (3·THF), Li, n = 0 (4) and K, n = 0 (5)) were obtained by reaction of H2[L] with MN(SiMe3)2 where M = Na, Li, or K. Calcium complex Ca[L](THF) (6·THF) was synthesized in two ways; reaction of Na2[L] with calcium iodide in THF, and reaction of Ca[N(SiMe3)2]2 with H2[L] in toluene. Compounds 1-6 exhibit activity for rac-lactide polymerization under melt and solution conditions. Moderate control of polymer molecular weights was achieved in toluene, whereas polydisperse polymer was obtained under solvent free conditions. MALDI-TOF MS analysis of the polymer end groups revealed a predominantly cyclic nature for the polylactides.

Abstract
The ring opening copolymerisation of CO2 and epoxides is a useful means to valorise waste emissions and to reduce pollution in polymer manufacturing. Heterodinuclear catalysts, particularly those of Zn(ii)/Mg(ii), have shown better performances than homodinuclear analogues in this reaction. As part of on-going efforts to better understand the catalytic synergy, this work describes a series of heterodinuclear complexes, combining Zn(ii) with a metal from Group 13 (M = Al(iii), Ga(iii) or In(iii)). The complexes are synthesised from a symmetrical macrocyclic ligand in high yields via sequential metalation steps and are the thermodynamic reaction products. The Zn(ii)/Group 13 complexes are effective homogeneous catalysts for the ring opening copolymerisation (ROCOP) of cyclohexene oxide at 1 bar pressure of carbon dioxide, but all show inferior performances compared to the di-zinc analogue. The CO2 uptake into the polymer increases in the order Al(iii) < Ga(iii) < In(iii) which is attributed to lower Lewis acidity heavier Group 13 homologues showing a reduced tendency to form ether linkages. Concurrently, polycarbonate activity increases down the Group 13 series consistent with weaker metal-oxygen bonds which show enhanced lability to insertion reactions.

Abstract
The reactivity and the reaction conditions of the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and L-lactide (LA) initiated by aluminum ketiminate complexes have been shown differently. Herein, we account for the observation by studying the mechanisms on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculations show that the ring-opening polymerization of ε-CL and LA are rate-determined by the benzoxide insertion and the C–O bond cleavage step, respectively. Theoretical computations suggest that the reaction temperature of L–LA polymerization should be higher than that of ε-CL one, in agreement with the experimental data. To provide a reasonable interpretation of the experimental results and to give an insight into the catalyst design, the influence of the electronic, steric, and thermal effects on the polymerization behaviors will be also discussed in this study.

Abstract
Aluminum alkyl complexes have very useful applications as catalysts or reagents in small molecule transformations and as cocatalysts in olefin polymerization. This short review focuses on some recent developments in the design, synthesis and structure of aluminum(iii) alkyl complexes supported by various ligands bearing nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur or phosphorus atoms, and their catalytic applications in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters. The coordination chemistry of the Al metal centre and the catalytic activity changes of the complexes caused by ligand modifications are also discussed.

Abstract
Yttrium and aluminium complexes of two dithiodiolate ligands that feature different bridges (CF3)2C(OH)CH2SRSCH2C(OH)(CF3)2 (L(1)-H2, R = CH2CH2 and L(2)-H2, R = C6H4) were synthesized in good yields by reacting tris(silylamide)yttrium or trimethylaluminium with one equivalent of the proligand. All complexes were characterized by NMR and elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray structural analysis was also performed for one of the yttrium complexes. The catalytic activities of the four complexes in the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and rac-lactide have been investigated. Furthermore, DOSY experiment and DFT calculations have been carried out to determine the structure of the isopropoxo derivative of the complex L(2)Y amide.

Abstract
A series of aluminum alkyl complexes nacnacRAlMe2 (2a-2h) bearing aliphatic N-substituted β-diketiminate ligands (nacnacRH = N,N'-dialkyl-2-amino-4-iminopent-2-enes), were prepared from the reaction of trialkyl aluminum and the corresponding β-diketimines. All these aluminum complexes were characterized by NMR, elemental analysis and HRMS spectroscopy. The molecular structures of complexes 2a, 2c and 2h were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These aluminum alkyl complexes show notable activity towards the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone in the absence and presence of alcohol, and the resulting polymers have narrow molecular weight distributions.

Abstract
A novel chemoselective polymerization control yields predictable (co)polymer compositions from a mixture of monomers. Using a dizinc catalyst and a mixture of caprolactone, cyclohexene oxide, and carbon dioxide enables the selective preparation of either polyesters or polycarbonates or copoly(ester-carbonates). The selectivity depends on the nature of the zinc-oxygen functionality at the growing polymer chain end, and can be controlled by the addition of exogeneous switch reagents.
