Abstract
The deoxydehydration of carbohydrates represents a key target to leverage renewable biomass resources chemically. Using a vanadium(V)-based catalyst, it was possible to directly deoxydehydrate cyclic trans-diol substrates. Accompanying mechanistic characterisation of this process by density functional calculations pointed to an energetically tractable route for deoxydehydration of cyclic trans-diol substrates involving stepwise cleavage of the diol C-O bonds via the triplet state; experimentally, this was supported by light dependence of the reaction. Calculations also indicated that cyclic cis-diols and a linear diol substrate could additionally proceed by a concerted singlet DODH mechanism. This work potentially opens a new and cost-effective way to efficiently convert carbohydrates of trans-diol stereochemistry into alkenes.

Abstract
Deoxydehydration (DODH) is an important reaction for the upconversion of biomass-derived polyols to commodity chemicals such as alkenes and dienes. DODH can be performed by a variety of early metal-oxo catalysts incorporating Re, Mo and V. The varying reduction methods used in the DODH catalytic cycle impact the product distribution, reaction mechanism and the overall yield of the reaction. This review surveys the reduction methods commonly used in homogeneous DODH catalyst systems and their impacts on yield and reaction conditions.

Abstract
Oxo-rhenium compounds, such as perrhenate salts, have demonstrated preferable activity in catalyzing the deoxydehydration (DODH) reaction in the presence of reductants. Here, the first computational details of the reported DODH mechanisms are presented using the density functional theory (DFT) (M06/6-311+G(d,p)/LANL2DZ) to investigate the conversion of a vicinal diol into the corresponding alkene by ReO4- as a catalyst. The DFT studies were carried out to evaluate the DODH mechanisms, from the energy point of view, for the conversion of phenyl-1,2-ethanediol to styrene by perrhenate anion in the presence of PPh3 as a reductant through a detailed comparison of two potential pathways including pathway A and pathway B. Pathway A includes the sequence of condensation of oxo-Re(VII) with diol before the reduction of Re(VII) to Re(V), whereas pathway B involves the reduction of oxo-Re(VII) to oxo-Re(V) before the condensation process. In pathway B, two basic routes (B1 and B2) are possible, which can take place through different reaction steps, including the extrusion of alkene from Re(V)-diolate in route B1, and the second reduction of the Re(V)-diolate by reductant and then the extrusion of alkene from the Re(III)-diolate intermediate in route B2. The intermediates and the Gibbs free energy changes, including ΔG°g and ΔG°sol, have been calculated for alternative pathways (A and B) in the gas and solvent (chlorobenzene and methanol) phases and compared to each other. In addition, the transition states and the activation energy barriers for two pathways (A and B) in the gas phase and in chlorobenzene have been calculated. The key transition states include the nucleophilic attack of PPh3 on an Re═O bond, the dissociation of OPPh3 from the rhenium moiety, the transfer of an H atom of diol to the oxo ligand in an oxo-Re bond through the condensation step, and the extrusion of styrene from the Re-diolate complexes. The DFT results indicate that the DODH reaction is thermodynamically feasible through both pathways (A and B). However, the calculations reveal that the perrhenate-catalyzed DODH reaction through pathway A has the lowest overall activation barrier energy among the DODH mechanism routes.

Abstract
The substitution of platform chemicals of fossil origin by biomass-derived analogues requires the development of chemical transformations capable of reducing the very high oxygen content of biomass. One such reaction, which has received increasing attention within the past five years, is the rhenium-catalyzed deoxydehydration (DODH) of a vicinal diol into an alkene; this is a model system for abundant polyols like glycerol and sugar alcohols. The present contribution includes a review of early investigations of stoichiometric reactions involving rhenium, diols, and alkenes followed by a discussion of the various catalytic systems that have been developed with emphasis on the nature of the reductant, the substrate scope, and mechanistic investigations.

Abstract
Methyldioxorhenium (MDO)-catalyzed C-O bond cleavage of a variety of lignin β-O-4-model compounds yields phenolic and aldehydic compounds in homogeneous phase under mild reaction conditions. MDO is in situ generated by reduction of methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) and is remarkably stable under the applied reaction conditions allowing its reuse for least five times without significant activity loss. Based on the observed and isolated intermediates, 17 O- and 2 H-isotope labeling experiments, DFT calculations, and several spectroscopic studies, a reaction mechanism is proposed.

Abstract
The commercially available (NH4 )6 Mo7 O24 and other molybdenum compounds are shown to be viable substitutes for the typically employed rhenium compounds in the catalytic deoxydehydration of aliphatic diols into the corresponding alkenes. The transformation, which represents a model system for the various hydroxyl groups found in biomass-derived carbohydrates, can be conducted in an inert solvent (dodecane), under solvent-free conditions, and in a solvent capable of dissolving biomass-derived polyols (1,5-pentanediol). The reaction is driven by the simultaneous oxidative deformylation of the diol resulting in an overall disproportionation of the substrate.

Abstract
A bulky cyclopentadienyl (Cp)-based trioxorhenium compound was developed for the catalytic deoxydehydration of vicinal diols to olefins. The 1,2,4-tri(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienyl trioxorhenium (2) catalyst was synthesised in a two-step synthesis procedure. Dirhenium decacarbonyl was converted into 1,2,4-tri(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienyl tricarbonyl rhenium, followed by a biphasic oxidation with H2 O2 . These two new three-legged compounds with a 'piano-stool' configuration were fully characterised, including their single crystal X-ray structures. Deoxydehydration reaction conditions were optimised by using 2 mol % loading of 2 for the conversion of 1,2-octanediol into 1-octene. Different phosphine-based and other, more conventional, reductants were tested in combination with 2. Under optimised conditions, a variety of vicinal diols (aromatic and aliphatic, internal and terminal) were converted into olefins in good to excellent yields, and with minimal olefin isomerisation. A high turnover number of 1400 per Re was achieved for the deoxydehydration of 1,2-octanediol. Furthermore, the biomass-derived polyols (glycerol and erythritol) were converted into their corresponding olefinic products by 2 as the catalyst.
