Abstract
A series of U(IV) complexes bearing alkyl and chloride ligands in the trans configuration was synthesized and characterized. Starting with the diastereopure U(IV) trans-dichloride complex meso-( tBu2PONO)UCl2(dtbpy) (1, tBu2PONO = 2,6-bis((di-tert-butylphosphino)methanolato)pyridine), four distinct alkyl groups were employed to prepare ( tBu2PONO)U(R)Cl(dtbpy), where R = (trimethylsilyl)methyl (neosilyl), 2a, R = 2,2-dimethyl propyl (neopentyl), 2b, and R = 2-methyl-2-phenyl propyl (neophyl), 2c. Alkylation occurs with specificity but generates a predominant species and a minor species corresponding to anti/syn regioisomers relative to the tBu2P groups of the ligand. For synthesis using R = methyl, the dimethyl complex ( tBu2PONO)U(Me)2(dtbpy), 2d, was prepared; the addition of 1 equiv of MeLi produced a mixture of products. Complexes 2a-2d were characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), UV-vis-nIR, and 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopies.

Abstract
The preparation of an actinide substituted cubane cluster, (Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*UI2, and its reduced derivatives are reported. Structural and spectroscopic investigations provide insight into the unique interactions between the actinide and its redox-active molybdenum sulphide metalloligand, serving as a model to study atomically-dispersed, low-valent actinide ions on MoS2 surfaces. To probe the ability of the assembly to facilitate multielectron small molecule activation, the reactivity of the fully-reduced cluster, (Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*U, with azobenzene was investigated. Addition of the substrate results in the formation of a cis-bis-imido cluster, (Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*U(NPh)2. Cooperative reactivity between the actinide and redox-active support facilitates the 4e--reduction of substrate.

Abstract
The development of new methods of catalyst synthesis with the potential to generate active site structures orthogonal to those accessible by traditional protocols is of great importance for discovering new materials for addressing challenges in the evolving energy and chemical economy. In this work, the generality of oxidative grafting of organometallic and well-defined molecular metal precursors onto redox-active surfaces such as manganese dioxide (MnO2) and lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) is investigated. Nine molecular metal precursors are explored, spanning groups 4-11 and each of the three periods of the transition metal series. The byproducts of the oxidative grafting reaction, a mixture of protodemetalation and ligand homocoupling for several organometallic precursors, was found to provide insights into the mechanism of the grafting reaction, suggesting oxidation of both the metal d-orbitals, as well as the metal-carbon σ-bonds, resulting in ejection of the ligand radical fragment. Analysis of the supported structures and oxidation state by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests that several of the chemisorbed metal ions are intercalated into interstitial vacancies of the surface structure while other complexes form intact molecular fragments on the surface. Proof of concept for the use of this metalation protocol to generate diverse, metal-dependent catalytic performance is demonstrated by the application of these materials in the conversion of cyclohexane to K/A oil (cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone) with tert-butyl hydroperoxide, as well as in the low-temperature (T ≤ 50 °C) oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and characterization of two types of new mixed-ligand rare earth complexes: tetracoordinate (NacNacMes)Ln(BIANdipp) (Ln = Dy (1), Er (2) and Y (3)) and pentacoordinate (NacNacMes)Ln(APdipp)(THF) (Ln = Dy (4), Er (5) and Y (6)). The first three compounds were prepared by the reaction of [(BIANDipp)LnI] with potassium β-diketiminate. The salt metathesis of β-diketiminato-supported rare earth dichlorides (NacNacMes)LnCl2(THF)2 with sodium o-amidophenolate results in compounds 4-6. The crystal structures of complexes 1-6 were determined by single-crystal analysis. The combination of bulky monoanionic N-mesityl-substituted β-diketiminates with sterically hindered redox-active ligands led to the very low coordination numbers of rare earths and strong distortion of the chelate ligands.

Abstract
The reaction of AnCl4(DME)n (An = Th, n = 2; U, n = 0) with 5 equiv of LiC6Cl5 in Et2O resulted in the formation of homoleptic actinide-aryl "ate" complexes [Li(DME)2(Et2O)]2[Li(DME)2][Th(C6Cl5)5]3 ([Li][1]) and [Li(Et2O)4][U(C6Cl5)5] ([Li][2]). Similarly, the reaction of AnCl4(DME)n (An = Th, n = 2; U, n = 0) with 3 equiv of LiC6Cl5 in Et2O resulted in the formation of heteroleptic actinide-aryl "ate" complexes [Li(DME)2(Et2O)][Li(Et2O)2][ThCl3(C6Cl5)3] ([Li][3]) and [Li(Et2O)3][UCl2(C6Cl5)3] ([Li][4]). Density functional calculations show that the An-Cipso σ-bonds are considerably more covalent for the uranium complexes vs the thorium analogues, in line with past results. Additionally, good agreement between experiment and calculations is obtained for the 13Cipso NMR chemical shifts in [Li][1] and [Li][3]. The calculations demonstrate a deshielding by ca. 29 ppm from spin-orbit coupling effects originating at Th, which is a direct consequence of 5f orbital participation in the Th-C bonds.

Abstract
We describe an example of a two-electron metal- and ligand-based reduction of Me3SiN3 using uranium(iv) complexes with varying steric properties. Reaction of (C5Me5)2U(CH3)[P(SiMe3)(Ph)] with Me3SiN3 produces the imidophosphorane complex, (C5Me5)2U(CH3)[N

However, a similar reaction with a more sterically encumbering phosphido ligand, (C5Me5)2U(CH3)[P(SiMe3)(Mes)] forms the U(iv) complex, (C5Me5)2U[κ2-(N,N)–N(SiMe3)P(Mes)N(SiMe3)]. In probing the mechanism of this reaction, a U(vi) bis(imido) complex, (C5Me5)2U(NSiMe3){N[P(SiMe3)(Mes)]} was isolated. DFT calculations show an intramolecular reductive cycloaddition reaction leads to the formation of the U(iv) bis(amido)phosphane from the U(vi) bis(imido) complex. This is a rare example of the isolation of a reaction intermediate in f element chemistry. We describe an example of a two-electron metal- and ligand-based reduction of Me3SiN3 using uranium(iv) complexes with varying steric properties. With uranium-based reduction, a U(vi) intermediate is isolated.![]()

Abstract
Metal-ligand complexation at surfaces utilizing redox-active ligands has been demonstrated to produce uniform single-site metals centers in regular coordination networks. Two key design considerations are the electron storage capacity of the ligand and the metal-coordinating pockets on the ligand. In an effort to move toward greater complexity in the systems, particularly dinuclear metal centers, we designed and synthesized tetraethyltetra-aza-anthraquinone, TAAQ, which has superior electron storage capabilities and four ligating pockets in a diverging geometry. Cyclic voltammetry studies of the free ligand demonstrate its ability to undergo up to a four-electron reduction. Solution-based studies with an analogous ligand, diethyldi-aza-anthraquinone, demonstrate these redox capabilities in a molecular environment. Surface studies conducted on the Au(111) surface demonstrate TAAQ's ability to complex with Fe. This complexation can be observed at different stoichiometric ratios of Fe:TAAQ as Fe 2p core level shifts in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Scanning tunneling microscopy experiments confirmed the formation of metal-organic coordination structures. The striking feature of these structures is their irregularity, which indicates the presence of multiple local binding motifs. Density functional theory calculations confirm several energetically accessible Fe:TAAQ isomers, which accounts for the non-uniformity of the chains.

Abstract
Complexes of divalent ytterbium (1) and europium (2) with a dianionic o-amidophenolate ligand were prepared by both the direct reduction of 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-o-iminobenzoquinone (dpp-IQ) and the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-amidophenolate with LnI2 (Ln = Yb, Eu). Oxidation of o-amidophenolates 1, 2 with one equivalent of dpp-IQ as well as the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-iminosemiquinolate with LnI2 afforded ligand mixed-valent o-iminosemiquinonato-amidophenolato complexes of trivalent ytterbium (3) and europium (4). All novel complexes 1-4 were fully characterized, including the solid state structures of 1 and 2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of paramagnetic 2-4 were examined.

Abstract
A series of uranyl compounds with the redox-active iminoquinone ligand have been synthesized, and their electronic structures elucidated using multinuclear NMR, EPR, electronic absorption spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and X-ray crystallography. Characterization and analysis of the iminoquinone (iq0) complex, (dippiq)UO2(OTf)2THF (1-iq), the iminosemiquinone (isq1-) complex, (dippisq)2UO2THF (2-isq), and the amidophenolate (ap2-) complex, [(dippap)2UO2THF][K(18-crown-6)(THF)2]2(3-ap crown) show that reduction events are ligand-based, with the uranium center remaining in the hexavalent state. Reactivity of 2-isq with B-chlorocatecholborane or pivaloyl chloride leads to U-Ouranyl bond scission and reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) concomitant with ligand oxidation along with organic byproducts. 18O isotopic labeling experiments along with IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy confirm that the organic byproducts contain oxygen atoms which originate from U-Ouranyl bond activation.

Abstract
An efficient chemoselective domino oxidative homocoupling of 2-aminoaryl ketones in the presence of 2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) for the synthesis of iminoquinone has been developed. The domino reaction proceeds via three consecutive steps, such as domino ortho-hydroxylation of 2-aminoaryl ketones, oxidation of a phenol derivative to benzoquinone and dimerization through imine formation to yield iminoquinone. Importantly, this reaction allows the recycling of the oxidant IBX by recovering the by-product iodosobenzoic acid (IBA) and oxidizing it back to IBX. A four step domino strategy for the synthesis of iminoquinone through in situ generation of 2-amino benzophenone from (2-amino phenyl)(phenyl)methanol was also developed.

Abstract
Redox-active ligands have evolved from being considered spectroscopic curiosities - creating ambiguity about formal oxidation states in metal complexes - to versatile and useful tools to expand on the reactivity of (transition) metals or to even go beyond what is generally perceived possible. This review focusses on metal complexes containing either catechol, o-aminophenol or o-phenylenediamine type ligands. These ligands have opened up a new area of chemistry for metals across the periodic table. The portfolio of ligand-based reactivity invoked by these redox-active entities will be discussed. This ranges from facilitating oxidative additions upon d(0) metals or cross coupling reactions with cobalt(iii) without metal oxidation state changes - by functioning as an electron reservoir - to intramolecular ligand-to-substrate single-electron transfer to create a reactive substrate-centered radical on a Pd(ii) platform. Although the current state-of-art research primarily consists of stoichiometric and exploratory reactions, several notable reports of catalysis facilitated by the redox-activity of the ligand will also be discussed. In conclusion, redox-active ligands containing catechol, o-aminophenol or o-phenylenediamine moieties show great potential to be exploited as reversible electron reservoirs, donating or accepting electrons to activate substrates and metal centers and to enable new reactivity with both early and late transition as well as main group metals.

Abstract
A tetravalent uranium compound with a radical azobenzene ligand, namely, [{(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}U(IV) (η(2) -N2 Ph2 (.) )] (2), was obtained by one-electron reduction of azobenzene by the trivalent uranium compound [U(III) {(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}] (1). Compound 2 was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and (1) H NMR, IR, and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of 2 and precursor 1 were studied by static magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements, which for the former revealed single-molecule magnet behaviour for the first time in a mononuclear U(IV) compound, whereas trivalent uranium compound 1 does not exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures. A first approximation to the magnetic behaviour of these compounds was attempted by combining an effective electrostatic model with a phenomenological approach using the full single-ion Hamiltonian.

Abstract
Uranium derivatives of a redox-active, dioxophenoxazine ligand, (DOPO(q))2UO2, (DOPO(sq))UI2(THF)2, (DOPO(cat))UI(THF)2, and Cp*U(DOPO(cat))(THF)2 (DOPO = 2,4,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-1-oxo-1H-phenoxazin-9-olate), have been synthesized from U(VI) and U(III) starting materials. Full characterization of these species show uranium complexes bearing ligands in three different oxidation states. The electronic structures of these complexes have been explored using (1)H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, and where possible, X-ray crystallography and SQUID magnetometry.
