Abstract
Multicomponent self-assembly of Mn2(CO)10, a bis-chelating aminoquinonato (ON∩ON) bridge (L), and an ester/amide-functionalized flexible neutral ditopic linker (L') has resulted into the formation of M2LL'-type manganese(I)-based dinuclear metallastirrups of general formula [{(CO)3Mn(μ-η4-L)Mn(CO)3}(μ-L')] (1-10). Compounds 1-10 were accomplished via orthogonal bonding of the aminoquinone ligand (2,5-bis(n-butylamino)-1,4-benzoquinone/2,5-bis(phenethylamino)-1,4-benzoquinone) and ditopic pyridyl ligand to manganese carbonyl. The resultant metallastirrups were characterized using elemental analyses and IR, UV-vis, 1H NMR, and electrospray ionization-mass spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structure of 6 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Furthermore, molecular recognition capabilities of 1, 5, 7, and 9 were evaluated with aromatic compounds containing hydroxy/amine functionalities. Anticancer activities of compounds 1-3, 5-7, 9, and 10 were investigated against three cancer cell lines, that is, lung (A549), colon (HCT-15), and cervical (HeLa) as well as on normal cells (HEK 293). Compound 9 showed a broad-spectrum inhibition toward these cancer cells upon exposure to visible light. The myoglobin assay was performed using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy to investigate the visible-light-triggered CO release from 5 and 9 that could be related to their ability to effectively inhibit cancer cells. In addition, morphological studies confirmed the induction of autophagy due to the treatment of cancer cells using compound 9.

Abstract
Controlled ligand-based redox-activity and chemical non-innocence are rapidly gaining importance for selective (catalytic) processes. This Concept aims to provide an overview of the progress regarding ligand-to-substrate single-electron transfer as a relatively new mode of operation to exploit ligand-centered reactivity and catalysis based thereon.

Abstract
Six terphenyl-bridged cyclometalated ruthenium-amine conjugated complexes 4(PF6)-9(PF6) were synthesized and studied. Three different substituents, methoxy, methyl, and chloro, were used to vary the electronic nature of the amine unit, and two terminal ligands 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) and trimethyl-4,4',4″-tricarboxylate-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Me3tctpy) were used to tune the electronic nature of the ruthenium component. All complexes, except 7(PF6) with the methoxy substituent and Me3tctpy ligand, display two well-separated redox waves in the potential range of +0.5 to +1.1 V versus Ag/AgCl. The regular electrochemical changes of these complexes help to establish the oxidation order of ruthenium and amine and hence of the direction of the electron transfer in odd-electron state. The degree of electronic coupling was estimated by analyzing the donor-to-acceptor charge transfer band in the near-infrared region obtained by oxidative spectroelectrochemical measurements. Electron paramagnetic resonance analyses and density functional theory calculations were performed on the one-electron oxidized forms to obtain information on the spin distribution of these complexes.

Abstract
The notoriously non-luminescent uncycled azophenine (Q) was harnessed with Bodipy and zinc(II)porphyrin antennas to probe its fluorescence properties, its ability to act as a singlet excited state energy acceptor and to mediate the transfer. Two near-IR emissions are depicted from time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, which are most likely due to the presence of tautomers of very similar calculated total energies (350 cm-1 ; DFT; B3LYP). The rates for energy transfer, kET (S1 ), for 1 Bodipy*→Q are in the order of 1010 -1011 s-1 and are surprisingly fast when considering the low absorptivity properties of the lowest energy charge transfer excited state of azophenine. The rational is provided by the calculated frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) which show atomic contributions in the C6 H4 C≡CC6 H4 arms, thus favoring the double electron exchange mechanism. In the mixed-antenna Bodipy-porphyrin star molecule, the rate for 1 Bodipy*→porphyrin has also been evaluated (≈16×1010 s-1 ) and is among the fastest rates reported for Bodipy-zinc(II)porphyrin pairs. This astonishing result is again explained from the atomic contributions of the C6 H4 C≡CC6 H4 and C≡CC6 H4 arms thus favouring the Dexter process. Here, for the first time, this process is found to be sensitively temperature-dependent. The azophenine turns out to be excellent for electronic communication.

Abstract
Metallamacrocylic tetraruthenium complexes were generated by treatment of 1,4-divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium complexes with functionalized 1,3-benzene dicarboxylic acids and characterized by HR ESI-MS and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Every divinylphenylene diruthenium subunit is oxidized in two consecutive one-electron steps with half-wave potential splittings in the range of 250 to 330 mV. Additional, smaller redox-splittings between the +/2+ and 0/+ and the 3+/4+ and 2+/3+ redox processes, corresponding to the first and the second oxidations of every divinylphenylene diruthenium entity, are due to electrostatic effects. The lack of electronic coupling through bond or through space is explained by the nodal properties of the relevant molecular orbitals and the lateral side-by-side arrangement of the divinylphenylene linkers. The polyelectrochromic behavior of the divinylphenylene diruthenium precursors is retained and even amplified in these metallamacrocyclic structures. EPR studies down to T=4 K indicate that the dications 1-H(2+) and 1-OBu(2+) are paramagnetic. The dications and the tetracation of macrocycle 3-H display intense (dications) or weak (3-H(4+) ) EPR signals. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the four most stable conformers of the macrocycles are largely devoid of strain. Bond parameters, energies as well as charge and spin density distributions of model macrocycle 5-H(Me) were calculated for the different charge and spin states.

Abstract
The ability of tetraazalene radical bridging ligands to mediate exceptionally strong magnetic exchange coupling across a range of transition metal complexes is demonstrated. The redox-active bridging ligand N,N',N'',N'''-tetra(2-methylphenyl)-2,5-diamino-1,4-diiminobenzoquinone (NMePhLH2) was metalated to give the series of dinuclear complexes [(TPyA)2M2(NMePhL2-)]2+ (TPyA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, M = MnII, FeII, CoII). Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility data for these complexes reveal the presence of weak superexchange interactions between metal centers, and fits to the data provide coupling constants of J = -1.64(1) and -2.16(2) cm-1 for M = MnII and FeII, respectively. One-electron reduction of the complexes affords the reduced analogues [(TPyA)2M2(NMePhL3-˙)]+. Following a slightly different synthetic procedure, the related complex [(TPyA)2CrIII2(NMePhL3-˙)]3+ was obtained. X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and Mössbauer spectroscopy indicate the presence of radical NMePhL3-˙ bridging ligands in these complexes. Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility data of the radical-bridged species reveal the presence of strong magnetic interactions between metal centers and ligand radicals, with simulations to data providing exchange constants of J = -626(7), -157(7), -307(9), and -396(16) cm-1 for M = CrIII, MnII, FeII, and CoII, respectively. Moreover, the strength of magnetic exchange in the radical-bridged complexes increases linearly with decreasing M-L bond distance in the oxidized analogues. Finally, ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that [(TPyA)2Fe2(NMePhL3-˙)]+ behaves as a single-molecule magnet with a relaxation barrier of Ueff = 52(1) cm-1. These results highlight the ability of redox-active tetraazalene bridging ligands to enable dramatic enhancement of magnetic exchange coupling upon redox chemistry and provide a rare opportunity to examine metal-radical coupling trends across a transmetallic series of complexes.

Dinuclear palladium complexes with two ligand-centered radicals and a single bridging ligand: subtle tuning of magnetic properties. Chemistry 2015; 21:5879-86. Abstract
The facile and tunable preparation of unique dinuclear [(L(⋅))Pd-X-Pd(L(⋅))] complexes (X = Cl or N3), bearing a ligand radical on each Pd, is disclosed, as well as their magnetochemistry in solution and solid state is reported. Chloride abstraction from [PdCl(NNO(ISQ))] (NNO(ISQ) = iminosemiquinonato) with TlPF6 results in an unusual monochlorido-bridged dinuclear open-shell diradical species, [{Pd(NNO(ISQ))}2(μ-Cl)](+), with an unusually small Pd-Cl-Pd angle (ca. 93°, determined by X-ray). This suggests an intramolecular d(8)-d(8) interaction, which is supported by DFT calculations. SQUID measurements indicate moderate antiferromagnetic spin exchange between the two ligand radicals and an overall singlet ground state in the solid state. VT EPR spectroscopy shows a transient signal corresponding to a triplet state between 20 and 60 K. Complex 2 reacts with PPh3 to generate [Pd(NNO(ISQ))(PPh3)](+) and one equivalent of [PdCl(NNO(ISQ))]. Reacting an 1:1 mixture of [PdCl(NNO(ISQ))] and [Pd(N3)(NNO(ISQ))] furnishes the 1,1-azido-bridged dinuclear diradical [{Pd(NNO(ISQ))}2(κ(1)-N;μ-N3](+), with a Pd-N-Pd angle close to 127° (X-ray). Magnetic and EPR measurements indicate two independent S = 1/2 spin carriers and no magnetic interaction in the solid state. The two diradical species both show no spin exchange in solution, likely because of unhindered rotation around the Pd-X-Pd core. This work demonstrates that a single bridging atom can induce subtle and tunable changes in structural and magnetic properties of novel dinuclear Pd complexes featuring two ligand-based radicals.
