Abstract
The recycling of homogeneous catalysts while keeping them in the homogeneous matrix is an ongoing challenge many reactions face if they are to find industrial applications. While a plethora of different synthetic approaches towards better, recyclable homogeneous catalysts exist, the literature shows a gap when one searches for a concise overview of the different catalyst modifications. This Review is designed to close that gap by summarising the existing synthesis pathways towards polar, non-polar, fluorous, and molecular-weight-enlarged catalysts and by examining their respective synthesis routes with a focus on modular and late-stage approaches. Furthermore, we map out the potential for a generally applicable tag library that allows straightforward catalyst modifications to tune them for each desired recycling strategy.

Abstract
In this study, enzyme inhibition and antioxidant activity analyzes of previously characterized pyridine-enhanced precatalyst preparation stabilization and initiation (PEPPSI)-type Palladium(II) complexes with benzimidazole-type ligands {dichloro[L]pyridine palladium(II), L1: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[benzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L2: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[4-chloro benzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L3: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[3-methylbenzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L4: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[3,4,5-thrimethoxybenzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L5: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[3-naphthylbenzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L6: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[anthracen-9-ylmethylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene} were performed and evaluated as potential drugs for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. Inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) complexes was determined for the first time in literature. Chelating activities of the complexes were determined and compared with EDTA. Electrochemical characterization was performed using cyclic voltammetry method. Moreover, global reactivity descriptors and electronic transitions were evaluated by DFT/TDDFT methods and molecular docking interactions with human acetylcholine esterase, human butyrylcholine esterase and oxidoreductase were studied.

Abstract
![]()
Four
dimeric nickel(II) complexes [Ni2Cl2(BnC2S)2] [1], [Ni2Cl2(BnC3S)2] [2], [Ni2(PyC2S)2]Br2 [3]Br2, and [Ni2(PyC3S)2]Br2 [4]Br2 of four different
thiolate-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were
synthesized, and their structures have been determined by single-crystal
X-ray crystallography. The four ligands differ by the alkyl chain
length between the thiolate group and the benzimidazole nitrogen (two
−C2– or three −C3–
carbon atoms) and the second functionality at the NHC being a benzyl
(Bn) or a pyridylmethyl (Py) group. The nickel(II) ions are coordinated
to the NHC carbon atom and the pendent thiolate group, which bridges
to the second nickel(II) ion creating the dinuclear structure. Additionally,
in compounds [1] and [2], the fourth coordination
position of the square-planar Ni(II) centers is occupied by the halide
ions, whereas in [3]2+ and [4]2+, the additional pendant pyridylmethyl groups complete
the coordination spheres of the nickel ions. The electrochemical properties
of the four complexes were studied using cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential
coulometry methods. The thiolate-functionalized carbene complexes
[1] and [2] appear to be poor electrocatalysts
for the hydrogen evolution reaction; the complexes [3]Br2 and [4]Br2, bearing an extra
pyridylmethyl group, show higher catalytic activity in proton reduction,
indicating that the pyridine group plays an important role in the
catalytic cycle.

Abstract
Three PEG-functionalized imidazolium salts L1–L3 were designed and prepared from commercially available materials via a simple method. Their corresponding water soluble Pd–NHC catalysts, in situ generated from the imidazolium salts L1–L3 and Na2PdCl4 in water, showed impressive catalytic activity for aqueous Mizoroki–Heck reactions. The kinetic study revealed that the Pd catalyst derived from the imidazolium salt L1, bearing a pyridine-2-methyl substituent at the N3 atom of the imidazole ring, showed the best catalytic activity. Under the optimal conditions, a wide range of substituted alkenes were achieved in good to excellent yields from various aryl bromides and alkenes with the catalyst TON of up to 10,000.

Abstract
Reactions of imidazoliums with palladacycles afforded NHC-palladacycle complexes. The reactivity of the NHC-palladacycles was explored and the results demonstrated that they could be template-directed ortho-aromatic metaloxylated in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), affording (NHC)Pd(salicylaldimine)Cl complexes. Furthermore, the NHC-palladacycles showed efficient catalytic activities toward the ortho-aromatic hydroxylation of arylimines.

Abstract
It is well-recognized that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have provided a new dimension to the design of homogeneous catalysts. Part of the success of this type of ligands resides in the limitless access to a variety of topologies with tuned electronic properties, but also in the ability of a family of NHCs that are able to adapt their properties to the specific requirements of individual catalytic transformations. The term "smart" is used here to refer to switchable, multifunctional, adaptable, or tunable ligands and, in general, to all those ligands that are able to modify their steric or electronic properties to fulfill the requirements of a defined catalytic reaction. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively describe all types of smart NHC ligands by focusing attention on the catalytically relevant ligand-based reactivity.
