Synthesis and Catalytic Activity of Water-Soluble Ruthenium(II) Complexes Bearing a Naphthyridine–Carboxylate Ligand

Ubiquitous Role of Phosphine-Based Water-Soluble Ligand in Promoting Catalytic Reactions in Water

Catalysis has been at the forefront of the developments that has revolutionised synthesis and provided the impetus in the discovery of platform technologies for efficient C-C or C-X bond formation. Current environmental situation however, demands a change in strategy with catalysis being promoted more in solvents that are benign (Water) and for that the development of hydrophilic ligands (especially phosphines) is a necessity which could promote catalytic reactions in water, allow recyclability of the catalytic solutions and make it possible to isolate products using column-free techniques that involve lesser usage of hazardous organic solvents. In this review, we therefore critically analyse such catalytic processes providing examples that do follow the above-mentioned parameter.

Half-Sandwich Ruthenium Complexes of Amide-Phosphine Based Ligands: H-Bonding Cavity Assisted Binding and Reduction of Nitro-substrates

We present synthesis and characterization of two half-sandwich Ru(II) complexes supported with amide-phosphine based ligands. These complexes presented a pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide based pincer cavity, decorated with hydrogen bonds, that participated in the binding of nitro-substrates closer to the Ru(II) centers, which is further supported with binding and docking studies. These ruthenium complexes functioned as the noteworthy catalysts for the borohydride mediated reduction of assorted nitro-substrates. Mechanistic studies not only confirmed the intermediacy of [Ru-H] in the reduction but also asserted the involvement of several organic intermediates during the course of the catalysis. A similar Ru(II) complex that lacked pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide based pincer cavity substantiated its unique role both in the substrate binding and the subsequent catalysis.

Selective Synthesis of a Series of Isostructural MII CuI Heterobimetallic Complexes Spontaneously Assembled by an Unsymmetrical Naphthyridine-Based Ligand

Metal-metal cooperation is integral to the function of many enzymes and materials, and model complexes hold enormous potential for providing insights into the capabilities of analogous multimetallic cores. However, the selective synthesis of heterobimetallic complexes still presents a significant challenge, especially for systems that hold the metals in close proximity and feature open or reactive coordination sites for both metals. To address this issue, a rigid, naphthyridine-based dinucleating ligand featuring distinct binding environments was synthesized. This ligand enables the selective synthesis of a series of M^II Cu^I bimetallic complexes (M=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn), in which each metal center exclusively occupies its preferred binding pocket, from simple chloride salts. The precision of this selectivity is evident from cyclic voltammetry, ESI-MS and anomalous X-ray diffraction measurements.

Pyrazole appended quinoline-BODIPY based arene ruthenium complexes: their anticancer activity and potential applications in cellular imaging

Synthesis of four arene ruthenium complexes [Ru(η⁶-C₆H₆)(L1)Cl]PF₆, (1), [Ru(η⁶-C₁₀H₁₄)(L1)Cl]PF₆ (2), [Ru(η⁶-C₆H₆)(L2)Cl]PF₆ (3) and [Ru(η⁶-C₁₀H₁₄)(L2)Cl]PF₆ (4) based on quinoline-BODIPY were described and their photocytotoxicity was evaluated.

Dehydrogenation, disproportionation and transfer hydrogenation reactions of formic acid catalyzed by molybdenum hydride compounds

The cyclopentadienyl molybdenum hydride compounds, CpRMo(PMe3)3-x (CO) x H (CpR = Cp, Cp*; x = 0, 1, 2 or 3), are catalysts for the dehydrogenation of formic acid, with the most active catalysts having the composition CpRMo(PMe3)2(CO)H. The mechanism of the catalytic cycle is proposed to involve (i) protonation of the molybdenum hydride complex, (ii) elimination of H2 and coordination of formate, and (iii) decarboxylation of the formate ligand to regenerate the hydride species. NMR spectroscopy indicates that the nature of the resting state depends on the composition of the catalyst. For example, (i) the resting states for the CpMo(CO)3H and CpMo(PMe3)(CO)2H systems are the hydride complexes themselves, (ii) the resting state for the CpMo(PMe3)3H system is the protonated species [CpMo(PMe3)3H2]+, and (iii) the resting state for the CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)H system is the formate complex, CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)(κ1-O2CH), in the presence of a high concentration of formic acid, but CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)H when the concentration of acid is low. While CO2 and H2 are the principal products of the catalytic reaction induced by CpRMo(PMe3)3-x (CO) x H, methanol and methyl formate are also observed. The generation of methanol is a consequence of disproportionation of formic acid, while methyl formate is a product of subsequent esterification. The disproportionation of formic acid is a manifestation of a transfer hydrogenation reaction, which may also be applied to the reduction of aldehydes and ketones. Thus, CpMo(CO)3H also catalyzes the reduction of a variety of ketones and aldehydes to alcohols by formic acid, via a mechanism that involves ionic hydrogenation.
