Abstract
The reactions of the diiron aminocarbyne complexes [Fe2Cp2(NCMe)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}]CF3SO3 (R = Me, 1aNCMe; R = Cy, 1bNCMe), freshly prepared from the tricarbonyl precursors 1a–b, with primary amines containing an additional function (i.e., alcohol or ether) proceeded with the replacement of the labile acetonitrile ligand and formation of [Fe2Cp2(NH2CH2CH2OR’)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}]CF3SO3 (R = Me, R’ = H, 2a; R = Cy, R’ = H, 2b; R = Cy, R’ = Me, 2c) in 81–95% yields. The diiron-oxazolidinone conjugate [Fe2Cp2(NH2OX)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)2}]CF3SO3, 3, was prepared from 1a, 3-(2-aminoethyl)-5-phenyloxazolidin-2-one (NH2OX) and Me3NO, and finally isolated in 96% yield. In contrast, the one pot reactions of 1a-b with NHEt2 in the presence of Me3NO gave the unstable [Fe2Cp2(NHEt2)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}]CF3SO3 (R = Me, 4a; R = Cy, 4b) as unclean products. All diiron complexes were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques; moreover, the behavior of 2a–c and 3 in aqueous media was ascertained.

Abstract
The diiron compounds [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO)(μ-CSEt)]CF3SO3, [1]CF3SO3, K[Fe2Cp2(CO)3(CNCH2CO2)], K[2], [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO)(μ-CNMe2)]NO3, [3]NO3, [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(PTA){μ-CNMe(Xyl)}]CF3SO3, [4]CF3SO3, and [Fe2Cp2(CO)(μ-CO){μ-η:1η3-C(4-C6H4CO2H)CHCNMe2}]CF3SO3, [5]CF3SO3, containing a bridging carbyne, isocyanoacetate, or vinyliminium ligand, were investigated for their photoinduced cytotoxicity. Specifically, the novel water-soluble compounds K[2], [3]NO3, and [4]CF3SO3 were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Stereochemical aspects concerning [4]CF3SO3 were elucidated by 1H NOESY NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Cell proliferation studies on human skin cancer (A431) and nontumoral embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells, with and without a 10-min exposure to low-power UV light (350 nm), highlighted the performance of the aminocarbyne [3]NO3, nicknamed NIRAC (Nitrate-Iron-Aminocarbyne), which is substantially nontoxic in the dark but shows a marked photoinduced cytotoxicity. Spectroscopic (IR, UV-vis, NMR) measurements and the myoglobin assay indicated that the release of one carbon monoxide ligand represents the first step of the photoactivation process of NIRAC, followed by an extensive disassembly of the organometallic scaffold.

Abstract
The versatility of isocyanides (CNR) in organic chemistry has been tremendously enhanced by continuous advancement in transition metal catalysis. On the other hand, the urgent need for new and more sustainable synthetic strategies based on abundant and environmental-friendly metals are shifting the focus towards iron-assisted or iron-catalyzed reactions. Diiron complexes, taking advantage of peculiar activation modes and reaction profiles associated with multisite coordination, have the potential to compensate the lower activity of Fe compared to other transition metals, in order to activate CNR ligands. A number of reactions reported in the literature shows that diiron organometallic complexes can effectively assist and promote most of the “classic” isocyanide transformations, including CNR conversion into carbyne and carbene ligands, CNR insertion, and coupling reactions with other active molecular fragments in a cascade sequence. The aim is to evidence the potential offered by diiron coordination of isocyanides for the development of new and more sustainable synthetic strategies for the construction of complex molecular architectures.

Abstract
The complexes Fe2(pdt)(CNR)6 (pdt(2-) = CH2(CH2S(-))2) were prepared by thermal substitution of the hexacarbonyl complex with the isocyanides RNC for R = C6H4-4-OMe (1), C6H4-4-Cl (2), Me (3). These complexes represent electron-rich analogues of the parent Fe2(pdt)(CO)6. Unlike most substituted derivatives of Fe2(pdt)(CO)6, these isocyanide complexes are sterically unencumbered and have the same idealized symmetry as the parent hexacarbonyl derivatives. Like the hexacarbonyls, the stereodynamics of 1-3 involve both turnstile rotation of the Fe(CNR)3 as well as the inversion of the chair conformation of the pdt ligand. Structural studies indicate that the basal isocyanide has nonlinear CNC bonds and short Fe-C distances, indicating that they engage in stronger Fe-C π-backbonding than the apical ligands. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that these new complexes are far more reducing than the hexacarbonyls, although the redox behavior is complex. Estimated reduction potentials are E1/2 ≈ -0.6 ([2](+/0)), -0.7 ([1](+/0)), and -1.25 ([3](+/0)). According to DFT calculations, the rotated isomer of 3 is only 2.2 kcal/mol higher in energy than the crystallographically observed unrotated structure. The effects of rotated versus unrotated structure and of solvent coordination (THF, MeCN) on redox potentials were assessed computationally. These factors shift the redox couple by as much as 0.25 V, usually less. Compounds 1 and 2 protonate with strong acids to give the expected μ-hydrides [H1](+) and [H2](+). In contrast, 3 protonates with [HNEt3]BAr(F)4 (pKa(MeCN) = 18.7) to give the aminocarbyne [Fe2(pdt)(CNMe)5(μ-CN(H)Me)](+) ([3H](+)). According to NMR measurements and DFT calculations, this species adopts an unsymmetrical, rotated structure. DFT calculations further indicate that the previously described carbyne complex [Fe2(SMe)2(CO)3(PMe3)2(CCF3)](+) also adopts a rotated structure with a bridging carbyne ligand. Complex [3H](+) reversibly adds MeNC to give [Fe2(pdt)(CNR)6(μ-CN(H)Me)](+) ([3H(CNMe)](+)). Near room temperature, [3H](+) isomerizes to the hydride [(μ-H)Fe2(pdt)(CNMe)6](+) ([H3](+)) via a first-order pathway.

Unprecedented C–N coupling between isocyanide and carbon monoxide is promoted by acetylide addition to the diiron complex [Fe2{μ-CN(Me)(Xyl)}(μ-CO)(CO)(CNXyl)(Cp)2][SO3CF3] (Xyl = 2,6-C6H3Me2), bearing an ancillary aminocarbyne ligand.
