Abstract
A series of trivalent lanthanide sandwich complexes [(η5-C4R4As)Ln(η8-C8H8)] using three different arsolyl ligands are reported. The complexes were obtained via salt elimination reactions between potassium arsolyl salts and lanthanide precursors [LnI(COT)(THF)2] (Ln = Sm, Dy, Er; COT = η8-C8H8). The resulting compounds exhibit classical sandwich complex structures with one notable exception. Characterization was conducted in both the solid state using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in solution for the Sm compounds using NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of an Er complex were investigated, revealing distinctive single-molecule-magnet behavior characterized by an energy barrier of Ueff = 323.3 K. Theoretical calculations were employed to support and interpret the experimental findings, with a comparative analysis performed against previously reported complexes.

Abstract
Ancillary ligand scaffolds that sufficiently stabilize a metal ion to allow its coordination to an open-shell ligand are scarce, yet their development is essential for next-generation spin-based materials with topical applications in quantum information science. To this end, a synthetic challenge must be met: devising molecules that enable the binding of a redox-active ligand through facile displacement and clean removal of a weakly coordinating anion. Here, we probe the accessibility of unprecedented radical-containing rare-earth guanidinate complexes by combining our recently discovered yttrium tetraphenylborate complex [{(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y][(μ-η6-Ph)(BPh3)] with the redox-active ligands 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 2,2'-bis(benzimidazole) (Bbim), respectively, under reductive conditions. Our endeavor resulted in the first evidence of guanidinate complexes that contain radicals, namely, a mononuclear bipyridyl radical complex, {(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y(bpy•) (1), and a dinuclear bis(benzimidazolyl) radical-bridged complex, [K(crypt-222)][{(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y]2(μ-Bbim•) (2'). The latter was achieved by an in situ reduction of [{(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y]2(μ-Bbim) (2), which was isolated from a salt metathesis reaction. 1 and 2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography and IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was applied to gain insight into the distribution of unpaired spin density on 1 and 2'. Density functional theory calculations were conducted on 1 and 2' to elucidate further their electronic structures. The redox activity of 1 and 2' was also probed by electrochemical methods.

Abstract
The coordination and organometallic chemistry of the f-elements, that is group 3, lanthanide, and actinide ions, supported by nitrogen ligands, e.g. amides, imides, and nitrides, has become well developed over many decades. In contrast, the corresponding f-element chemisty with the heavier pnictogen analogues phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth has remained significantly underdeveloped, due largely to a lack of suitable synthetic methodologies and also the inherent hard(f-element)-soft(heavier pnictogen) acid-base mismatch, but has begun to flourish in recent years. Here, we review complexes containing chemical bonds between the f-elements and heavy pnictogens from phosphorus to bismuth that spans five decades of endeavour. We focus on complexes whose identity has been unambiguously established by structural authentication by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with respect to their synthesis, characterisation, bonding, and reactivity, in order to provide a representative overview of this burgeoning area. By highlighting that much has been achieved but that there is still much to do this review aims to inspire, focus and guide future efforts in this area.

Abstract
While a ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) process is an important way to understand the interactions between metal-bridged radicals for late-transition-metal complexes, there is little clear and evident observation of the LLCT process for rare-earth-metal complexes. In this work, rare-earth-metal diradical complexes supported by diazabutadiene (DAD) ligands [(DAD)2RE(BH4)] [RE = Yb (1), Sm (2)] were synthesized and studied. The coordination geometries of 1 and 2 are different due to the different ionic radii. Reduction of 1 or 2 generated monoradical complexes, with one of their DAD radical anions being reduced. In all of the complexes, Sm and Yb remain at the 3+ valence state. In their UV-vis spectra, the LLCT transition of 1 could be clearly observed, but complex 2 did not show the same transition. These results could be related to the geometric structures of the complexes as well as exchange coupling between diradicals, thus clearly expanding the model for late-transition-metal-bridged diradicals to rare-earth systems experimentally.

Abstract
The recent isolation of molecular tetravalent lanthanide complexes has enabled renewed exploration of the effect of oxidation state on the single-ion properties of the lanthanide ions. Despite the isotropic nature of the 8S ground state in a tetravalent terbium complex, [Tb(NP(1,2-bis-tBu-diamidoethane)(NEt2))4], preliminary X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on tetravalent terbium complexes show rich spectra with broad resonances. The complexity of these spectra highlights the limits of conventional X-band EPR for even qualitative determination of zero-field splitting (ZFS) in these complexes. Therefore, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel valence series of 4f7 molecular complexes spanning three oxidation states (Eu2+, Gd3+, and Tb4+) featuring a weak-field imidophosphorane ligand system, and employ high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) to obtain quantitative values for ZFS across this valence series. The series was designed to minimize deviation in the first coordination sphere from the pseudotetrahedral geometry in order to directly interrogate the role of metal identity and charge on the complexes' electronic structures. These HFEPR studies are supported by crystallographic analysis and quantum-chemical calculations to assess the relative covalent interactions in each member of this valence series and the effect of the oxidation state on the splitting of the ground state and first excited state.

Abstract
Over more than 50 years, intermediate valence states in lanthanide compounds have often resulted in unexpected or puzzling spectroscopic and magnetic properties. Such experimental singularities could not be rationalised until new theoretical models involving multiconfigurational electronic ground states were established. In this minireview, the different singularities that have been observed among lanthanide complexes are highlighted, the models used to rationalise them are detailed and how such electronic effects may be adjusted depending on energy and symmetry considerations is considered. Understanding and tuning the ground-state multiconfigurational behaviour in lanthanide complexes may open new doors to modular and unusual reactivities.

Abstract
The f‐block chemistry of phospholyl and arsolyl ligands, heavier p‐block analogues of substituted cyclopentadienyls (CpR, C5R5) where one or more CR groups are replaced by P or As atoms, is less developed than for lighter isoelectronic C5R5 rings. Heterocyclopentadienyl complexes can exhibit properties that complement and contrast with CpR chemistry. Given that there has been renewed interest in phospholyl and arsolyl f‐block chemistry in the last two decades, coinciding with a renaissance in f‐block solution chemistry, a review of this field is timely. Here, the syntheses of all structurally characterised examples of lanthanide and actinide phospholyl and arsolyl complexes to date are covered, including benzannulated derivatives, and together with group 3 complexes for completeness. The physicochemical properties of these complexes are reviewed, with the intention of motivating further research in this field.

Abstract
We present the synthesis of a series of new lanthanide(III) complexes supported by a monoanionic bidentate anilidophosphine ligand (N-(2-(diisopropylphosphanyl)-4-methylphenyl)-2,4,6-trimethylanilide, short PN-). The work comprises the characterization of a variety of heteroleptic complexes containing either one or two PN ligands as well as a study on further functionalization possibilities. The new heteroleptic complexes cover selected examples over the whole lanthanide(III) series including lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and lutetium. In case of the two diamagnetic metal cations lanthanum(III) and lutetium(III), we have furthermore studied the influence of the lanthanide ion (early vs. late) on the reactivity of these complexes. Thereby we found that the radius of the lanthanide ion has a major influence on the reactivity. Using sterically demanding, multidentate ligand systems, e.g., cyclopentadienide (Cp-), we found that the lanthanum complex La(PN)2Cl (1-La) reacts well to the corresponding cyclopentadienide complex, while for Lu(PN)2Cl (1-Lu) no reaction was observed under any conditions tested. On the contrary, employing monodentate ligands such as mesitolate, thiomesitolate, 2,4,6-trimethylanilide or 2,4,6-trimethylphenylphosphide, results in the clean formation of the desired complexes for both lanthanum and lutetium. All complexes have been studied by various techniques, including multi nuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. 31P NMR spectroscopy was furthermore used to evaluate the presence of open coordination sites on the complexes using coordinating and noncoordinating solvents, and as a probe for estimating the Ce-P distance in the corresponding complexes. Additionally, we present cyclic voltammetry (CV) data for Ce(PN)2Cl (1-Ce), La(PN)2Cl (1-La), Ce(PN)(HMDS)2 (8-Ce) and La(PN)(HMDS)2 (8-La) (with HMDS = hexamethyldisilazide, (Me3Si)2N-) exploring the potential of the anilidophosphane ligand framework to stabilize a potential Ce(IV) ion.

Abstract

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have potential applications
in high-density
data storage, but magnetic relaxation times at elevated temperatures
must be increased to make them practically useful. Bis-cyclopentadienyl
lanthanide sandwich complexes have emerged as the leading candidates
for SMMs that show magnetic memory at liquid nitrogen temperatures,
but the relaxation mechanisms mediated by aromatic C5 rings
have not been fully established. Here we synthesize a bis-monophospholyl
dysprosium SMM [Dy(Dtp)2][Al{OC(CF3)3}4] (1, Dtp = {P(CtBuCMe)2}) by the treatment of in-situ-prepared “[Dy(Dtp)2(C3H5)]” with [HNEt3][Al{OC(CF3)3}4]. SQUID
magnetometry reveals that 1 has an effective barrier
to magnetization reversal of 1760 K (1223 cm–1)
and magnetic hysteresis up to 48 K. Ab initio calculation
of the spin dynamics reveals that transitions out of the ground state
are slower in 1 than in the first reported dysprosocenium
SMM, [Dy(Cpttt)2][B(C6F5)4] (Cpttt = C5H2tBu3-1,2,4); however, relaxation is faster
in 1 overall due to the compression of electronic energies
and to vibrational modes being brought on-resonance by the chemical
and structural changes introduced by the bis-Dtp framework. With the
preparation and analysis of 1, we are thus able to further
refine our understanding of relaxation processes operating in bis-C5/C4P sandwich lanthanide SMMs, which is the necessary
first step toward rationally achieving higher magnetic blocking temperatures
in these systems in the future.

Reduction of 2,2′-Bipyridine by Quasi-Linear 3d-Metal(I) Silylamides—A Structural and Spectroscopic Study. INORGANICS 2019. Abstract
Quasi-linear anionic 3d-metal(I) silylamides are a new and promising class of molecules. Due to their highly negative reduction potential we wanted to test their capability to reduce substrates under coordination of their monoanionic radicaloid form. In a proof of principle study, we present the results of the reaction of metal(I) silylamides of chromium to cobalt with 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy), the redox non-innocence and reducibility of which was already established. In the course of these studies complexes of the type K{18-crown-6}[M(hmds)2(bipy)] (hmds = –N(SiMe3)2) were obtained. These compounds were isolated and thoroughly characterized to confirm the electron transfer onto the bipyridine ligand, which now acts as a radical monoanion. For comparison of the structural changes of the bipyridine ligand, the analogous zinc complexes were also synthesized. Overall our results indicate that anionic metal(I) silylamides are capable of reducing and ligate substrates, even when the electrochemical reduction potential of the latter is by up to 1 V higher.

Abstract
This article presented the synthesis and characterization of original heterobimetallic species combining a divalent lanthanide fragment and a divalent nickel center bridged by the bipyrimidine ligand, a redox-active ligand. X-ray crystal structures were obtained for the Ni monomer (bipym)NiMe2, 1, as well as the heterobimetallic dimer compounds, Cp*2Yb(bipym)NiMe2, 2, along with 1H solution NMR, solid-state magnetic data, and DFT calculations only for 1. The reactivity with CO was investigated on both compounds and the stoichiometric acetone formation is discussed based on kinetic and mechanistic studies. The key role of the lanthanide fragment was demonstrated by the relatively slow CO migratory insertion step, which indicated the stability of the intermediate.

Abstract
This article relates the synthesis and characterization of novel heterobimetallic complexes containing a low-valent lanthanide, a tetradentate redox non-innocent ligand, viz. the 4,5,9,10-tetraazaphenanthrene, taphen ligand and transition metal fragments of PdMe2 and PtMe2. The experimental results are supported by a theoretical study. Investigation of their reduction properties allowed the formation of isostructural original heterotrimetallic complexes containing two Cp*2Yb fragments and the (taphen)MMe2 (M = Pd and Pt) motifs. These complexes are stable in non-coordinating solvent such as toluene but decompose in coordinating solvents such as thf. Investigation of the internal electron transfer shows that the taphen ligand behaves as a two-electrons reservoir but is capable of transferring back only one electron in thf. This reversible electron(s) transfer is rare in organolanthanide chemistry and show the potential interest of these complexes in reductive chemistry. Additionally, the trinuclear complexes feature odd X-ray crystal structures in which a deviation of symmetry is observed. The latter observation was studied in depth using quantum chemistry calculations highlighting the role of non-covalent weak interactions.

Abstract
![]()
The unique combination of a divalent
organolanthanide fragment,
Cp*2Yb, with bipyrimidine (bipym) and a palladium
bis-alkyl fragment, PdMe2, allows the rapid formation and
stabilization of a PdIV tris-alkyl moiety after oxidative
addition with MeI. The crucial role of the organolanthanide
fragment is demonstrated by the substitution of bipym by the 4,5,9,10-tetraazaphenanthrene
ligand, which drastically modifies the electronic structure and tunes
the stability of the PdIV species.

Abstract
The reaction of the hexadentate dianionic 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-based bis(phenolate) ligand, (tBu2ArO)2Me2-cyclam(2-), with [SmI2(thf )2] in thf resulted in the formation of the divalent samarium complex [Sm(κ(6)-{(tBu2ArO)2Me2-cyclam})] (1). X-ray diffraction studies revealed that after recrystallization from n-hexane/thf complex 1 has a monomeric structure and does not contain thf molecules coordinated to the Sm(II) center. However, UV-vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopy of 1 evidenced the formation of thf-solvated complexes in neat thf. Reductive studies show that complex 1 can act as a single electrontransfer reagent and form well-defined Sm(III) species. The reaction of 1 with several substrates, namely, TlBPh4, pyridine N-oxide, OPPh3, SPPh3 and bipyridines, are reported. Spectroscopy studies, including NMR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction data are in agreement with the formation of cationic Sm(III) species, monochalcogenide bridged Sm(III) complexes and Sm(III) complexes with bipyridine radical ligand, respectively.
