Synthesis and reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) gold-fluoroalkoxide complexes

We disclose a novel series of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) gold complexes with varied steric and electronic properties, bearing fluorinated alkoxide anions. Early reactivity studies involving these synthons, lead to the synthesis of various complexes of relevance to gold chemistry and catalysis.

Chemo-selective Stille-type coupling of acyl-chlorides upon phosphine-borane Au(i) catalysis

Phosphine-boranes do not promote oxidative addition of acyl chlorides to gold, but the phosphine-borane gold triflimide complex [iPr2P(o-C6H4)BCy2]AuNTf2 was found to catalyze the coupling of acyl chlorides and aryl stannanes. The reaction involves aryl/chloride-bridged dinuclear gold(i) complexes as key intermediates, as substantiated by spectroscopic and crystallographic analyses. Similar to Pd(0)/Pd(ii)-catalyzed Stille coupling with phosphine-borane ligands, the gold-catalyzed variant shows complete chemoselectivity for acyl chlorides over aryl iodides and bromides, enabling straightforward access to halogenated aryl ketones.

Exploring the Reactivity of B-Connected Carboranylphosphines in Frustrated Lewis Pair Chemistry: A New Frame for a Classic System

The primary phosphines MesPH2 and tBuPH2 react with 9-iodo-m-carborane yielding B9-connected secondary carboranylphosphines 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PHR (R=2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 (Mes; 1 a), tBu (1 b)). Addition of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) to 1 a, b resulted in the zwitterionic compounds 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PHR(p-C6 F4 )BF(C6 F5 )2 (2 a, b) through nucleophilic para substitution of a C6 F5 ring followed by fluoride transfer to boron. Further reaction with Me2 SiHCl prompted a H-F exchange yielding the zwitterionic compounds 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PHR(p-C6 F4 )BH(C6 F5 )2 (3 a, b). The reaction of 2 a, b with one equivalent of R'MgBr (R'=Me, Ph) gave the extremely water-sensitive frustrated Lewis pairs 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 )B(C6 F5 )2 (4 a, b). Hydrolysis of the B-C6 F4 bond in 4 a, b gave the first tertiary B-carboranyl phosphines with three distinct substituents, 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 H) (5 a, b). Deprotonation of the zwitterionic compounds 2 a, b and 3 a, b formed anionic phosphines [1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 )BX(C6 F5 )2 ]- [DMSOH]+ (R=Mes, X=F (6 a), R=tBu, X=F (6 b); R=Mes, X=H (7 a), R=tBu, X=H (7 b)). Reaction of 2 a, b with an excess of Grignard reagents resulted in the addition of R' at the boron atom yielding the anions [1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 )BR'(C6 F5 )2 ]- (R=Mes, R'=Me (8 a), R=tBu, R'=Me (8 b); R=Mes, R'=Ph (9 a), R=tBu, R'=Ph (9 b)) with [MgBr(Et2 O)n ]+ as counterion. The ability of the zwitterionic compounds 3 a, b to hydrogenate imines as well as the Brønsted acidity of 3 a were investigated.

Recent advances in the synthesis and derivatization of N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal complexes have gained an incredible amount of attention in the course of the last two decades and have become indispensable as an intricate part of a plethora of applications. The areas of their synthesis and derivatization are constantly evolving and bring new, more sustainable, cost-effective and simpler approaches to the design of existing and next generation catalysts and materials. This article provides an overview of the latest developments, focusing on those which have appeared during the last two years.

Isomerization of a cis-(2-Borylalkenyl)Gold Complex via a Retro-1,2-Metalate Shift: Cleavage of a C-C/C-Si Bond trans to a C-Au Bond

This manuscript describes the first example of an alkyne insertion to the Au-B bond of a di(o-tolyl)borylgold complex to afford a cis-2-borylalkenylgold complex, and its isomerization to result in interchanging substituents on the alkenyl carbon atom and the boron atom. The former reaction is the first example of an alkyne insertion to a Au-B bond. In the latter reaction, the regiochemistry of the isomerized alkenylgold products varied depending on the substituents. DFT calculations revealed the formation of gold alkynylborates as a common intermediate via a "retro-1,2-metalate shift", which can be considered as an anti-β-carbon/silicon elimination, and identified a subsequent 1,2-metalate shift as the regiochemistry-determining step. Relative energies of the transition states to each isomer and natural-bond-orbital (NBO) analyses were used to clearly rationalize the regiochemistry of the products.

1,1-Phosphaboration of C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C and C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bonds at gold

The phosphine-borane iPr2P(o-C6H4)BFXyl2 (Fxyl = 3,5-(F3C)2C6H3) was found to react with gold(i) alkynyl and vinyl complexes via an original 1,1-phosphaboration process. Zwitterionic complexes resulting from Au to B transmetallation have been authenticated as key intermediates. X-ray diffraction analyses show that the alkynyl-borate moiety remains pendant while the vinyl-borate is side-on coordinated to gold. According to DFT calculations, the phosphaboration then proceeds in a trans stepwise manner via decoordination of the phosphine, followed by anti nucleophilic attack to the π-CC bond activated by gold. The boron center acts as a relay and tether for the organic group.

Tuning Activity and Selectivity during Alkyne Activation by Gold(I)/Platinum(0) Frustrated Lewis Pairs

Introducing transition metals into frustrated Lewis pair systems has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Here we report a selection of three metal-only frustrated systems based on Au(I)/Pt(0) combinations and their reactivity toward alkynes. We have inspected the activation of acetylene and phenylacetylene. The gold(I) fragments are stabilized by three bulky phosphines bearing terphenyl groups. We have observed that subtle modifications on the substituents of these ligands proved critical in controlling the regioselectivity of acetylene activation and the product distribution resulting from C(sp)-H cleavage of phenylacetylene. A mechanistic picture based on experimental observations and computational analysis is provided. As a result of the cooperative action of the two metals of the frustrated pairs, several uncommon heterobimetallic structures have been characterized.

Mild and Efficient Synthesis of Diverse Organo-AuI -L Complexes in Green Solvents

An exceptionally mild and efficient method was developed for the preparation of (hetero)aryl-Au^I -L complexes using ethanol or water as the reaction medium at room temperature and Ar-B(triol)K boronates as the transmetalation partner. The reaction does not need an exogeneous base or other additives, and quantitative yields can be achieved through a simple filtration as the only required purification method, which obviates considerable waste associated with alternative workup methods. A broad reaction scope was demonstrated with respect to both the L and (hetero)aryl ligands on product Au complexes. Despite the polar reaction medium, large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon units can be incorporated on the Au complexes in very good to excellent yields. The approach was demonstrated for the chemoselective manipulation of orthogonally protected aryl boronates to afford a new class of N-heterocyclic carbene-Au-aryl complexes. A mechanistic rationale was proposed.

Simple Synthetic Routes to N-Heterocyclic Carbene Gold(I)-Aryl Complexes: Expanded Scope and Reactivity

The discovery of sustainable and scalable synthetic protocols leading to gold-aryl compounds bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands sparked an investigation of their reactivity and potential utility as organometallic synthons. The use of a mild base and green solvents provide access to these compounds, starting from widely available boronic acids and various [Au(NHC)Cl] complexes, with reactions taking place under air, at room temperature and leading to high yields with unprecedented ease. One compound, (N,N'-bis[2,6-(di-isopropyl)phenyl]imidazol-2-ylidene)(4-methoxyphenyl)gold, ([Au(IPr)(4-MeOC₆ H₄ )]), was synthesized on a multigram scale and used to gauge the reactivity of this class of compounds towards C-H/N-H bonds and with various acids, revealing simple pathways to gold-based species that possess attractive properties as materials, reagents and/or catalysts.

The last two decades have seen a veritable explosion in the use of gold(i) complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and phosphine (PR₃) ligands.

Recent Advances in Phthalan and Coumaran Chemistry

Oxygen-containing heterocycles are common in biologically active compounds. In particular, phthalan and coumaran cores are found in pharmaceuticals, organic electronics, and other useful medical and technological applications. Recent research has expanded the methods available for their synthesis. This Minireview presents recent advances in the chemistry of phthalans and coumarans, with the goal of overcoming synthetic challenges and facilitating the applications of phthalans and coumarans.

Comparing Protonolysis and Transmetalation Reactions: Microcalorimetric Studies of C-AuI Bonds in [AuRL] Complexes

The protonolysis of C-Au bonds in [AuRL] organometallic complexes has been studied by calorimetry for 12 R groups. The experimental data have been combined with density functional theory calculations to obtain bond dissociation energy (BDE) values. The C-Au BDE values show a good correlation with the corresponding isolobal C-H BDE values. The heat released in the protonolysis of [AuRL] has also been measured for R = Ph and L = P(OPh)₃, PPh₃, PMe₃, PCy₃, and IPr, and these values strongly depend on the trans influence of L because of the mutual destabilization of the L-Au and Au-C bonds. The enthalpies of the transmetalation reaction [AuR(PPh₃)] + SnIBu₃ → [AuI(PPh₃)] + SnRBu₃ for seven R groups have been measured and compared with those of the corresponding [AuR(PPh₃)] protonolysis.

Catalytic Activity of Gold(I) Complexes with Hemilabile P,N Ligands

Two new cationic dinuclear gold(I) complexes, [Au₂ {μ(P,N)-5}₂ ]X₂ -in which X=NTf₂ (7; Tf=trifluoromethanesulfonate) or SbF₆ (8) and 2-(diphenylphosphanyl)benzonitrile (5) is a P,N-bridging donor-have been synthesized and structurally characterized. These air-stable species and their dimeric and polymeric analogues possessing 1'-(diphenylphosphanyl)-1-cyanoferrocene (1) as the bridging ligand, [Au₂ {μ(P,N)-1}₂ ](NTf₂ )₂ and [Au{μ(P,N)-1}]_n [SbF₆ ]_n , were used as precatalysts in various Au-mediated C-C and C-O bond-forming reactions. The reactivity of these complexes revealed the hemilabile nature of their P,N ligands. In the series of tested precatalysts, complex 8 exerted particularly high catalytic activity at low Au loading, even in reactions that usually require high amounts of gold catalyst to proceed efficiently under standard reaction conditions.

Methyl-, Ethenyl-, and Ethynyl-Bridged Cationic Digold Complexes Stabilized by Coordination to a Bulky Terphenylphosphine Ligand

Reactions of the gold(I) triflimide complex [Au(NTf2 )(PMe2 Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$)] (1) with the gold(I) hydrocarbyl species [AuR(PMe2 Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$)] (2 a-2 c) enable the isolation of hydrocarbyl-bridged cationic digold complexes with the general composition [Au2 (μ-R)(PMe2 Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$)2 ][NTf2 ], where Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$=C6 H3 -2,6-(C6 H3 -2,6-iPr2 )2 and R=Me (3), CHCH2 (4), or CCH (5). Compound 3 is the first alkyl-bridged digold complex to be reported and features a symmetric [Au(μ-CH3 )Au](+) core. Complexes 4 and 5 are the first species of their kind that contain simple, unsubstituted vinyl and acetylide units, respectively. In the series of complexes 3-5, the bridging carbon atom systematically changes its hybridization from sp(3) to sp(2) and sp. Concomitant with this change, and owing to variations in the nature of the bonding within the [Au(μ-R)Au](+) unit, there is a gradual decrease in aurophilicity, that is, the strength of the Au⋅⋅⋅Au bonding interaction decreases. This change is illustrated by a monotonic increase in the Au-Au distance by approximately 0.3 Å from R=CH3 (2.71 Å) to CHCH2 (3.07 Å) and CCH (3.31 Å).

NMR spectroscopy studies of electronic effects and equilibrium in the organogold-to-boron transmetalation reaction and studies towards its application to the alkoxyboration addition of boron-oxygen σ bonds to alkynes

Electronic effects in the transmetalation of an aryl group from gold to boron were investigated by NMR spectroscopy. The transmetalation reaction is more facile for increasingly electrophilic boron reagents and is in equilibrium under certain conditions. Observed tetracoordinate boronate compounds suggest a two-step, associative transmetalation reaction mechanism in which the organogold complex first delivers a nucleophilic phenyl group to the empty p orbital of boron. For certain substrates, this tetracoordinate intermediate decomposes to the tricordinate, final transmetallation product, and in others this tricordinate species remains in equilibrium with a tetracoordinate anionic boron compound. Experimental and theoretical investigations into the extension of this transmetalation reaction from a mechanistic step in our previously reported intramolecular gold-catalyzed addition of boron-oxygen σ bonds across alkynes to an intermolecular variant are discussed.2014 Elsevier Ltd. Novel zwitterionic complexes arising from the coordination of an ambiphilic phosphorus-aluminum ligand to gold

Coordination of Mes2PC(=CHPh)AltBu2 to metal chlorides has been studied. Bridging P→M-Cl→Al coordinations were observed with Rh and Pd fragments, while chloride abstraction systematically occurred with gold. The resulting zwitterionic complexes have been fully characterized and analyzed by DFT calculations.

Side-on coordination of boryl and borylene complexes to cationic coinage metal fragments

The M-(η2-BMn) complex [(η5-C5H5)(OC)2Mn{μ-B(Cl)(tBu)Au(PPh3)}] (2) can be functionalized via halide substitution reactions to afford isostructural complexes [(η5-C5H5)(OC)2Mn{μ-B(R)(tBu)Au(PPh3)}] (R = Ph, CCPh and NCS). It also reacts with coinage metal complexes [MCl(PPh3)] (M = Au, Ag and Cu) in the presence of halide abstraction reagents to afford borylene-bridged heteromultinuclear complexes [{(η5-C5H5)(OC)2Mn}2{μ2-B(tBu)}2M][BArx4] (M = Au, Ag and Cu; Arx = 3,5-C6H3Cl2, 3,5-C6H3(CF3)2). Experimental characterization as well as computational studies revealed that these complexes are best viewed as transition metal borylene complexes side-on coordinated to monovalent coinage metal cations, thus representing the first boron analogs of Stone's alkylidyne-bridged multinuclear complexes.
