Mono- and Bimetallic Aluminum Alkyl, Aryl, and Hydride Complexes of a Bulky Dipyrromethene Ligand

Synthesis and optical properties of antimony(V) complexes of a trianionic N2O2-type tetradentate dipyrrin ligand

LSbCl2, an air- and moisture-stable antimony(V)-dipyrrin complex at room temperature, was obtained by treating an excess amount (20 eq.) of SbCl3 with a trianionic N2O2-type tetradentate dipyrrin ligand (L) under visible-light irradiation and O2 atmosphere. The Cl ligands in LSbCl2 were replaced by OH ligands via hydrolysis, yielding LSb(OH)2. Further, the molecular structures and optical properties of the Sb(V)-dippyrin complexes were investigated. While LSbCl2 was non-fluorescent, LSb(OH)2 exhibited an intense red fluorescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 68%.

Easy access to strongly fluorescent higher homologues of BODIPY

We present the easy and high yield synthesis of several group 13 MesDPM compounds (Al-In) with alkyl substituents at the metal atom. All these compounds were fully characterized using techniques including X-ray diffraction analysis and photoluminescence measurements. It shows that for aluminium and gallium pronounced green fluorescence is observed, which is absent for indium. DFT calculations confirm that the first electronic transition corresponds to a ligand-based π-π* transition.

Germylenes Exhibiting Solid-State Emissions that Extend to NIR

Low-valent main group compounds that fluoresce in the solid-state were previously unknown. To address this, we investigated room-temperature photoluminescence from a series of crystals of germylenes 3-8 in this article; they exhibited emissions nearly reaching the NIR. Germylene carboxylates (3-8) were synthesized by reacting dipyrromethene stabilized germylene pyrrolide (2) with carboxylic acids such as acetic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, benzoic acid, p-cyanobenzoic acid, p-nitrobenzoic acid, and acetylsalicylic acid.

Replacing the BO in BODIPY: unlocking the path to SBDIPY and BIDIPY chromophores

Boron-based dipyrrin chromophores (BODIPY) have found widespread application over the last twenty years in fields as diverse as medicine and materials. Thus, several efforts have been placed to exchange boron with other elements, with the aim of developing materials with complementary luminescent properties. However, despite these attempts, the incorporation of other main-group elements in dipyrrin scaffolds remains still rare. We have successfully synthesized and characterized novel chromophores based on antimony and bismuth, SBDIPY and BIDIPY. Solution stabilities have been investigated by VT-UV/vis spectroscopy and the fluorescence emission studied and supported by computational analysis. We were also able to isolate the first direct analogue of BODIPY containing fluoride handles, disclosing preliminary luminescent features.

Crystalline heaviest pnictogen-dipyrromethenes: isolation, characterization, and reactivity

The heaviest pnictogen-dipyrromethenes DPMPnCl₂ (Pn = Sb, 3; Bi 4), which are direct analogues of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), have been readily prepared and isolated as crystalline solids. Both compounds display green photoluminescence with small full widths at half maximum in toluene. Moreover, the reduction of 3 with sodium metal afforded the cyclic dicoordinate stibinidene 5.

Metal Coordination Effects on the Photophysics of Dipyrrinato Photosensitizers

Within this work, we review the metal coordination effect on the photophysics of metal dipyrrinato complexes. Dipyrrinato complexes are promising candidates in the search for alternative transition metal photosensitizers for application in photodynamic therapy (PDT). These complexes can be activated by irradiation with light of a specific wavelength, after which, cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated. The metal coordination allows for the use of the heavy atom effect, which can enhance the triplet generation necessary for generation of ROS. Additionally, the flexibility of these complexes for metal ions, substitutions and ligands allows the possibility to tune their photophysical properties. A general overview of the mechanism of photodynamic therapy and the properties of the triplet photosensitizers is given, followed by further details of dipyrrinato complexes described in the literature that show relevance as photosensitizers for PDT. In particular, the photophysical properties of Re(I), Ru(II), Rh(III), Ir(III), Zn(II), Pd(II), Pt(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Ga(III), In(III) and Al(III) dipyrrinato complexes are discussed. The potential for future development in the field of (dipyrrinato)metal complexes is addressed, and several new research topics are suggested throughout this work. We propose that significant advances could be made for heteroleptic bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) and homoleptic bis(dipyrrinato)palladium(II) complexes and their application as photosensitizers for PDT.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

K2S2O8 mediated synthesis of 5-aryldipyrromethanes and meso-substituted A4-tetraarylporphyrins

The synthesis of dipyrromethanes from pyrrole and arylglyoxylic acids in the presence of K2S2O8at 90 [Formula: see text]C is reported affording dipyrromethanes in very good yields. Unlike an excess pyrrole traditionally used in dipyrromethane synthesis, the current method uses a stoichiometric amount of pyrrole avoiding any use of Brønsted or Lewis acid. A gram scale synthesis of 5-phenyldipyrromethane is also achieved demonstrating potential scale up of dipyrromethanes using this method feasible. Subsequently, dipyrromethanes were converted to A4-tetraarylporphyrins also in the presence of K2S2O8at 90[Formula: see text]C. A direct synthesis of A4-tetraphenylporphyrin from excess pyrrole and phenylglyoxylic acid in the presence of K2S2O8 at 90[Formula: see text]C is also reported.

Luminescence from open-shell, first-row transition metal dipyrrin complexes

Several first-row transition metal complexes of the 1,9-bis(2',4',6'-triphenylphenyl)-5-mesityl dipyrrinato ligand and its tetrahalogenated analogues have been synthesized and their luminescence spectra obtained. The protonated ligands, as well as the Li(i), Mn(ii), Cu(i), Cu(ii), and Zn(ii) chelates show appreciable luminescence, despite the paramagnetism of the Mn(ii) and Cu(ii) ions. Fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) as high as 0.67 were observed for the zinc complex. Luminescence was partially quenched by the introduction of heavy halogens to the backbone of the ligand, as well as by the introduction of paramagnetic metal ions. Room-temperature, solution state phosphorescence was observed from the halogenated dipyrrinato lithium salts, as well as from the non-halogenated Mn(ii) complex.

Ditopic bis(N,N',N'-substituted 1,2-ethanediamine) ligands: synthesis and coordination chemistry

The synthesis of two different types of bis(N,N',N'-substituted 1,2-ethanediamine)s, bridged either through the secondary (type 1) or tertiary (type 2) amine groups is reported. Selected protio-ligands have been applied in subsequent metallation reactions using aluminium, magnesium, tin, and zinc sources allowing to isolate five mononuclear and eight dinuclear complexes. All complexes have been fully characterized and their solid-state structures have been studied by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Nine of the 13 complexes carry reactive alkyl, amide or hydride groups, which indicates their potential as catalysts or supports for (transition) metals.

Dipyrrin based metal complexes: reactivity and catalysis

Sometimes named half-porphyrins, bis-pyrrolic dipyrrin ligands endow their metal complexes with unique properties such as the potential to functionalize the heterocyclic backbone or the meso position and the ability to catalyze interesting chemical transformations. Thus, strategies towards the derivatization of or at the meso group and the use of dipyrrin metal complexes for the formation of a broad range of polypyrrolic derivatives such as 2,2'-bis-dipyrrins, nor-/hetero-corroles and porphynoids have been elaborated. Furthermore, the chelating ability of dipyrrins and the possibility of modifying their steric and electronic characteristics by functionalization can be exploited for the development of numerous complexes featuring appealing properties. Hence, C-H activation/amination, polymerization or oxidation reactions can be catalyzed by dipyrrin metal complexes and classical reagents such as Grignard species, Rh-based or Suzuki-Miyaura catalysts have been revisited by incorporation of dipyrrins in the coordination sphere of the metal cations. This contribution aims to review and illustrate all these aspects, highlighting the potential of these complexes for the design and synthesis of valuable organic compounds and metallo-organic architectures.

Mono- and Bimetallic Aluminum Alkyl, Alkoxide, Halide and Hydride Complexes of a Bulky Conjugated Bis-Guanidinate(CBG) Ligand and Aluminum Alkyls as Precatalysts for Carbonyl Hydroboration

Tetra-aryl-substituted symmetrical conjugated bis-guanidine (CBG) ligands such as L^1-3 (3H) [L(3H) = {(ArHN)(ArHN)C═N-C═NAr(NHAr)}; Ar = 2,6-Me₂-C₆H₃ (L¹(3H)), 2,6-Et₂-C₆H₃ (L²(3H)), and 2,6-ⁱPr₂-C₆H₃ (L³(3H))] have been employed to synthesize a series of four- and six-membered aluminum heterocycles (1-8) for the first time. Generally, aluminum complexes bearing N,N'- chelated guanidinate and β-diketiminate/dipyrromethene ligand systems form four- and six-membered heterocycles, respectively. However, the conjugated bis-guanidine ligand has the capability of forming both four- and six-membered heterocycles possessing multimetal centers within the same molecule; this is due to the presence of three acidic protons, which can be easily deprotonated (at least two protons) upon treatment with metal reagents. Both mono- and dinuclear aluminum alkyls and mononuclear aluminum alkoxide, halide, and hydride complexes have been structurally characterized. Further, we have demonstrated the potential of mononuclear, six-membered CBG aluminum dialkyls in catalytic hydroboration of a broad range of aldehydes and ketones with pinacolborane (HBpin).

Current Advances in the Synthesis of Valuable Dipyrromethane Scaffolds: Classic and New Methods

This review presents the most recent developments on the synthesis of dipyrromethanes, covering classical synthetic strategies, using acid catalyzed condensation of pyrroles and aldehydes or ketones, and recent breakthroughs which allow the synthesis of these type of heterocycles with new substitution patterns.

A displacement-type fluorescent probe reveals active species in the coordinative polymerization of olefins

The correct identification of active species is an important prerequisite to study the mechanism of coordinative polymerization of olefins, which can afford important theoretical guidance for the design and synthesis of new organometallic catalysts and high-performance polyolefin materials.

New types of Cu and Ag clusters supported by the pyrrole-based NNN-pincer type ligand

While the neutral ligand 2,5-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)pyrrole gives the dihalide ion bridged binuclear and coordination polymers, its anionic form affords a new type of tetranuclear ‘hourglass’ shaped copper(i) and triangular silver(i) clusters owing to its increased denticity.

Ring-opening of cyclic ethers by aluminum hydridotriphenylborate

Ring-opening of THF or THP in the presence of pinacolborane can be catalyzed by a molecular aluminum hydride catalyst [(L)AlH₂]₂ (L = Me₃TACD)/BPh₃ and involves an isolable intermediate [(L)AlH][HBPh₃].

Aluminum alkoxide, amide and halide complexes supported by a bulky dipyrromethene ligand: synthesis, characterization, and preliminary ε-caprolactone polymerization activity

Aluminum halide, alkoxide and amide complexes 2-6 of the form (N,N)AlX2-nYn (n = 0, 1 and (N,N) = 1,9-dimesityl-5-phenyldipyrromethene (1)) were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The in situ generated lithium salt of dipyrromethene 1 was reacted with AlX3 to afford aluminum halide complexes (N,N)AlX2 (X = Cl (2), I (3)) which were isolated as dichroic crystals. Salt metathesis reactions were employed to produce alkoxide complexes (N,N)Al(Cl)(O(t)Bu) (4) and (N,N)Al(O(t)Bu)2 (5) from compound 2. The dimethylamide complex (N,N)Al(NMe2)2 (6) was prepared by reaction of dipyrromethene 1 with [Al(NMe2)3]2. Crystallographic data revealed that the dipyrromethene is non-planar when bulky coligands are present as in compounds 3-6, while in the dichloride complex 2 the dipyrromethene is planar. Halide complexes 2 and 3 reacted with adventitious moisture in toluene to afford crystalline acid-base adducts (N,N)H·HX, (X = Cl (7), I (8)), which adopted structures reminiscent of anion receptors. Alkoxide and dimethylamide complexes 5 and 6 were also applied as precatalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and preliminary results are reported.
