Abstract
The bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide anion (Tf2N), which is a common component of ionic liquids, often exhibits disorder in the solid state. In this study, the phase transitions and crystal structures of the Tf2N salts of 1,1‴-dineopentyl-1',1″-biferrocene (=npBifc), 1',1″-biferrocene (=Bifc), ferrocene, and cobaltocene (1-4, respectively) were compared. All the salts exhibited phase transitions at low temperatures, which are accompanied by anion ordering, though the ordering was not complete in 2 and 3. X-ray crystallographic investigation revealed that the cations and anions in 1 and 2 adopted alternating arrangements and segregated columnar arrangements, respectively. The cation in 1 exhibited a symmetrical, average-valence structure in the room-temperature phase owing to rapid valence tautomerization, whereas the cation exhibited an unsymmetrical structure in the low-temperature phase. The cation in 2 exhibited an unsymmetrical, trapped-valence structure in both phases. The cation valence states in these salts were accounted for by the electrostatic interactions between the cations and anions. The crystal structures and phase behavior of the ferrocenium salt 3 were very different from those of 4.

Abstract
Mixed-valence compounds can be used for the design of molecular quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA). Here, we investigate the QCA properties of a three-dot "Y"-shaped functionalized zwitterionic neutral closo-carborane model 1-(3,5-{Cp(dHpe)Fe-C≡C-}2(C6H3))-10-Cp(dHpe)Fe-C≡C-closo-1-CB9H8 (1) (Cp = cyclopentadienyl (η5-C5H5) and dHpe = 1,2-bis(phosphino)ethane (H2PCH2CH2PH2)) as a neutral clocked molecular half-cell. DFT results clearly demonstrate that 1 can display simultaneously the two most basic properties necessary for clocked QCA operation, i.e., bistable switching behavior and clocked control. This is possible due to the three stable states (two active and one null) of 1, corresponding to occupation of each of the three iron-ethynyl groups by the positive charge. In addition, the proximal electronic bias effects can be overcome by the zwitterionic nature of 1, which could be imposed by external counterions, rendering these effects more predictable.

Abstract
Realization of molecular quantum cellular automata (QCA), a promising architecture for molecular computing through current-free processes, requires improved understanding and application of mixed-valence (MV) molecules. In this report, we present an electrostatic approach to creating MV subspecies through internalizing opposite charges in close proximity to MV ionic moieties. This approach is demonstrated by unsymmetrically attaching a charge-responsive boron substituent to a well-known organometallic MV complex, biferrocenium. Guest anions (CN- and F- ) bind to the Lewis acidic boron center, leading to unusual blue-shifts of the intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) bands. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported example of a zwitterionic MV series in which the degree of positive charge delocalization can be varied by changing the bound anions, and serves to clarify the interplay between IVCT parameters. The key underlying factor is the variable zero-level energy difference in the MV states. This work provides new insight into imbuing MV molecules with external charge-responsiveness, a prerequisite of molecular QCA techniques.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a new bistriarylamine series having a urea bridge and investigate its mixed-valence (MV) states by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. We found that the supporting electrolytes had unusual effects on potential splitting during electrochemical behavior, in which a smaller counteranion thermodynamically stabilized a MV cation more substantially than did a bulky one. The effects contrary to those reported in conventional MV systems were explained by zwitterionization through hydrogen bonding between the urea bridge and the counteranions, increasing the electronic interactions between two triarylamino units. Furthermore, we clarified the intervalence charge transfer characteristics of the zwitterionic MV state.

Abstract
The reaction of E-2-ferrocenylmethylidenetetralones and E,E-2,6-bis-(ferrocenylmethylidene)-cyclohexanone with 2-aminothiophenol proceed with high diastereoselectivity, forming the ~4.5:1 mixture of trans- and cis-isomers of polycyclic ferrocenylthiazepines, respectively. The reactions of E,E-2,5-bis-(ferrocenylmethylidene)cyclopentanone and E,E-3,5-bis-(ferrocenylmethylidene)-1-methyl-4-piperidone with 2-aminothiophenol take place stereo specifically to form the diastereomeric tricyclic thiazepines of cis- and trans-configuration, respectively. The structures of the obtained compounds were established by IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and mass-spectrometry. The structures of the trans-tetralino[1,2a]-, trans-5,7-dimethyltetralino[1,2a]-2-ferrocenyl [1,5]benzo-2,3-dihydrothiazepines and cis-5-ferrocenyl-methylidenecyclopentano[1,2a]-2-ferrocenyl- [1,5]benzo-2,3-dihydrothiazepine were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. An electrochemical study reveals that the diferrocenyl derivatives belong to a Class I compounds of the Robin-Day classification. This behavior is explained by the analysis of frontier orbitals as calculated by density functional theory, showing that only one ferrocenyl unit participates in the generation of HOMO and LUMO orbitals. Compounds 4a and 4c showed similar capacity to inhibit the proliferation of HM1: IMSS trophozoite cultures than the first choice drug for human amoebiasis treatment, metronidazole. Morphological changes induced in the trophozoites after drug exposure suggest a redox in balance as the probable mechanism of the parasite death.
