Abstract
Complex speciation and exchange kinetics of labile ligands are critical parameters for understanding the reactivity of metal complexes in solution. We present a novel approach to determine ligand exchange parameters based on electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The introduction of isotopically labelled ligands to a solution of metal host and unlabelled ligands allows the quantitative investigation of the solution-phase equilibria. Furthermore, ion mobility separation can target individual isomers, such as ligands bound at specific sites. As a proof of concept, we investigate the solution equilibria of labile pyridine ligands coordinated in the cavity of macrocyclic porphyrin cage complexes bearing diamagnetic or paramagnetic metal centres. The effects of solvent, porphyrin coordination sphere, transition metal, and counterion on ligand dissociation are discussed. Rate constants and activation parameters for ligand dissociation in the solution can be derived from our ESI-MS approach, thereby providing mechanistic insights that are not easily obtained from traditional solution-phase techniques.

Abstract
We report an iron system, Cp*Fe(1,2-R2PC6H4X), which controls the Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov hydrostannation of alkynes by tuning the ionic metal-heteroatom bonds (Fe-X) reactivity. The sequential addition of nBu3SnH to the iron-amido catalyst (1, X = HN-, R = Ph) affords a distannyl Fe(IV)-H species responsible for syn-addition of the Sn-H bond across the C≡C bond to produce branched α-vinylstannanes. Activation of the C(sp)-H bond of alkynes by an iron-aryloxide catalyst (2, X = O-, R = Cy) affords an iron(II) vinylidene intermediate, allowing for gem-addition of the Sn-H to the terminal-carbon producing β-vinylstannanes. These catalytic reactions exhibit excellent regioselectivity and broad functional group compatibility and enable the large-scale synthesis of diverse vinylstannanes. Many new reactions have been established based on such a synthetic Fe-X platform to demonstrate that the initial step of the catalysis is conveniently controlled by the activation of either the tin hydride or the alkyne substrate.

Abstract
The heterolytic splitting of hydrosilanes by ruthenium(ii) thiolates is illuminated by a combined spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational analysis.
The nature of the hydrosilane activation mediated by ruthenium(ii) thiolate complexes of type [(R3P)Ru(SDmp)]+[BArF4]– is elucidated by an in-depth experimental and theoretical study. The combination of various ruthenium(ii) thiolate complexes and tertiary hydrosilanes under variation of the phosphine ligand and the substitution pattern at the silicon atom is investigated, providing detailed insight into the activation mode. The mechanism of action involves reversible heterolytic splitting of the Si–H bond across the polar Ru–S bond without changing the oxidation state of the metal, generating a ruthenium(ii) hydride and sulfur-stabilized silicon cations, i.e. metallasilylsulfonium ions. These stable yet highly reactive adducts, which serve as potent silicon electrophiles in various catalytic transformations, are fully characterized by systematic multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The structural assignment is further verified by successful isolation and crystallographic characterization of these key intermediates. Quantum-chemical analyses of diverse bonding scenarios are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings. Moreover, the calculations reveal that formation of the hydrosilane adducts proceeds via barrierless electrophilic activation of the hydrosilane by sterically controlled η1 (end-on) or η2 (side-on) coordination of the Si–H bond to the Lewis acidic metal center, followed by heterolytic cleavage of the Si–H bond through a concerted four-membered transition state. The Ru–S bond remains virtually intact during the Si–H bond activation event and also preserves appreciable bonding character in the hydrosilane adducts. The overall Si–H bond activation process is exergonic with ΔG0r ranging from –20 to –40 kJ mol–1, proceeding instantly already at low temperatures.
