Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Uranium(III) and Neodymium(III) Cyclooctatetraenyl Complexes

Substituent Positioning Effects on the Magnetic Properties of Sandwich-Type Erbium(III) Complexes with Bis(trimethylsilyl)-Substituted Cyclooctatetraenyl Ligands

Lanthanide complexes with judiciously designed ligands have been extensively studied for their potential applications as single-molecule magnets. With the influence of ligands on their magnetic properties generally established, recent research has unearthed certain effects inherent to site differentiation due to the different types and varying numbers of substituents on the same ligand platform. Using two new sandwich-type Er(III) complexes with cyclooctatetraenyl (COT) ligands featuring two differently positioned trimethylsilyl (TMS) substituents, namely, [Li(DME)Er(COT1,5-TMS2)2]n (Er1) and [Na(DME)3][Er(COT1,3-TMS2)2] (Er2) [COT1,3-TMS2 and COT1,5-TMS2 donate 1,3- and 1,5-bis(trimethylsilyl)-substituted cyclooctatetraenyl ligands, respectively; DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane], and with reference to previously reported [Li(DME)3][Er(COT1,4-TMS2)2] (A) and [K(DME)2][Er(COT1,4-TMS2)2] (B), any possible substituent position effects have been explored for the first time. The rearrangement of the TMS substituents from the starting COT1,4-TMS2 to COT1,3-TMS2 and COT1,5-TMS2, by way of formal migration of the TMS group, was thermally induced in the case of Er1, while for the formation of Er2, the use of Na+ in the placement of its Li+ and K+ congeners is essential. Both Er1 and Er2 display single-molecule magnetic behaviors with energy barriers of 170(3) and 172(6) K, respectively. Magnetic hysteresis loops, butterfly-shaped for Er1 and wide open for Er2, were observed up to 12 K for Er1 and 13 K for Er2. Studies of magnetic dynamics reveal the different pathways for relaxation of magnetization below 10 K, mainly by the Raman process for Er1 and by quantum tunneling of magnetization for Er2, leading to the order of magnitude difference in magnetic relaxation times and sharply different magnetic hysteresis loops.

It's not just the size that matters: crystal engineering of lanthanide-based coordination polymers

Synthesis and characterization of Lewis base free coordination polymers of selected lanthanides are presented. For this purpose, the substituted CotTIPS ligand (CotTIPS = 1,4-bis-triisopropylsilyl-cyclo-octatetraendiide) was used to synthesize homoleptic, anionic multidecker compounds of the type [K{LnIII(ɳ8-CotTIPS)2}]n. Depending on the solvent used for crystallization and the ionic radii of the lanthanide cations, three different categories of one-dimensional heterobimetallic coordination polymers were obtained in the solid state. For the early lanthanides La and Ce a unique helical conformation was obtained by crystallization from toluene, while the ionic radius of Pr seems to be a turning point towards the crystallization of zigzag polymers. For Er a third structural motif, a trapezoidal wave polymer was observed. Additionally, the zigzag polymer for all compounds could be obtained by changing the solvent from toluene to Et2O, reavealing a correlation between solid-state structure and ionic radii as well as solvent. While photoluminescence (PL) properties of Cot-lanthanide compounds are scarce, the La complexes show ligand centered green luminescence, whereas the Ce complexes reveal deep red emission origin from d-f transitions. The Er-compounds are single-molecule magnets, in which the magnetic relaxation of each Er ion occurs isolated from its neighbors at temperatures above 10 K, while below 9 K a strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the Er ions was seen.

Field-induced SIM behaviour in early lanthanide(III) organophosphates containing 18-crown-6

Single-ion magnets (SIMs) have attracted wide attention in recent years. Despite tremendous progress in late lanthanide SIMs, reports on early lanthanides exhibiting SIM characteristics are scarce. A series of five novel 18-crown-6 encapsulated mononuclear early lanthanide(III) organophosphates, [{(18-crown-6)Ln(dippH)₃}{(18-crown-6)Ln(dippH)₂(dippH₂)}]·[I₃] [Ln = Ce (1), Pr (2), Nd (3)] and [{Ln(18-crown-6)(dippH)₂(H₂O)}·{I₃}] [Ln = Sm (4) and Eu (5)], have been synthesised in the present study. 18-crown-6 coordinates to Ln(III) ions in an equatorial position while the axial positions are occupied by either three phosphate moieties as in 1-3 or two phosphate moieties and one water molecule as in 4 and 5, resulting in a muffin-shaped coordination geometry around the Ln(III) centres. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that Ce and Nd complexes are field-induced single-ion magnets with significant barrier heights. Furthermore, the ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations on complexes 1 and 3 reveal significant QTM in the ground state rationalising the field-induced single-ion magnetism behaviour of these complexes.

Lanthanide Single-molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structures, Properties and Recent Advances

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U_eff ) and pre-exponential factor (τ₀ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Electronic structure comparisons of isostructural early d- and f-block metal(iii) bis(cyclopentadienyl) silanide complexes

We report the synthesis of the U(iii) bis(cyclopentadienyl) hypersilanide complex [U(Cp'')₂{Si(SiMe₃)₃}] (Cp'' = {C₅H₃(SiMe₃)₂-1,3}), together with isostructural lanthanide and group 4 M(iii) homologues, in order to meaningfully compare metal-silicon bonding between early d- and f-block metals. All complexes were characterised by a combination of NMR, EPR, UV-vis-NIR and ATR-IR spectroscopies, single crystal X-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, elemental analysis and ab initio calculations. We find that for the [M(Cp'')₂{Si(SiMe₃)₃}] (M = Ti, Zr, La, Ce, Nd, U) series the unique anisotropy axis is conserved tangential to ; this is governed by the hypersilanide ligand for the d-block complexes to give easy plane anisotropy, whereas the easy axis is fixed by the two Cp'' ligands in f-block congeners. This divergence is attributed to hypersilanide acting as a strong σ-donor and weak π-acceptor with the d-block metals, whilst f-block metals show predominantly electrostatic bonding with weaker π-components. We make qualitative comparisons on the strength of covalency to derive the ordering Zr > Ti ≫ U > Nd ≈ Ce ≈ La in these complexes, using a combination of analytical techniques. The greater covalency of 5f³ U(iii) vs. 4f³ Nd(iii) is found by comparison of their EPR and electronic absorption spectra and magnetic measurements, with calculations indicating that uranium 5f orbitals have weak π-bonding interactions with both the silanide and Cp'' ligands, in addition to weak δ-antibonding with Cp''.

Oxalate-bridging NdIII-based arsenotungstate with multifunctional NIR-luminescence and magnetic properties

Oxalate bridged Nd-based arsenotungstate, K₁₄Na₆H₄[{(As₂W₁₉O₆₇(H₂O))Nd(H₂O)₂}₂(C₂O₄)]·64H₂O (1), was obtained from the reaction of K₁₄[As₂W₁₉O₆₇(H₂O)], oxalic acid, and NdCl₃·6H₂O in mildly acidic aqueous solution. The polyanion exhibits a dimeric structure in which the fully deprotonated oxalate ligands bridge two Nd^III cations and the arsenotungstate anions act as blocking ligands. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of 1 shows the characteristic emission peak of Nd^III in the near-infrared (NIR) region. However, the O → W charge-transfer transitions of arsenotungstate cannot effectively sensitize the emission of Nd^III cations as confirmed by the emission spectrum, due to the mismatch of the energy gap between ³T_1u → ¹A_1g (21.57 × 10³ cm^-1) of arsenotungstate components and ⁴F_3/2 → ⁴I_9/2 (11.43 × 10³ cm^-1) of Nd^III cations. Magnetic studies of 1 demonstrate its field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies imply the weak ferromagnetic couplings present between the two neighboring Nd^III cations. In addition, the synergy between the coordination configuration of Nd^III cations and the intramolecular magnetic interaction was discussed.

In silico design criteria for high blocking barrier uranium (III) SIMs

A combination of DFT and ab initio CASSCF/PT2 calculations on U(III) fictitious models and numerous reported X-ray structures unveils several geometries from coordination number 1 to 12 that can be targeted to design potential U(III) SIMs with attractive barrier heights. Among the geometries studied, the T-shaped and capped pentagonal antiprism geometries yield values exceeding 1500 cm^-1 - a value that is elusive for any uranium SIMs.

Assembling Diuranium Complexes in Different States of Charge with a Bridging Redox-Active Ligand

Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC₈ reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged U^III–bpym˙⁻–U^III complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC₈, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^III}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 3. Addition of AgBPh₄ to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym˙⁻)][BPh₄], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation.

Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.

Single-Ion Anisotropy and Intramolecular Interactions in CeIII and NdIII Dimers

This article reports the syntheses, characterization, structural description, together with magnetic and spectroscopic properties of two isostructural molecular magnets based on the chiral ligand N,N'-bis((1,2-diphenyl-(pyridine-2-yl)methylene)-(R,R/S,S)-ethane-1,2-diamine), L1, of general formula [Ln2(RR-L1)2(Cl6)]·MeOH·1.5H2O, (Ln = Ce (1) or Nd (2)). Multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), cantilever torque magnetometry (CTM) measurements, and ab initio calculations allowed us to determine single-ion magnetic anisotropy and intramolecular magnetic interactions in both compounds, evidencing a more important role of the anisotropic exchange for the NdIII derivative. The comparison of experimental and theoretical data indicates that, in the case of largely rhombic lanthanide ions, ab initio calculations can fail in determining the orientation of the weakest components, while being reliable in determining their principal values. However, they remain of paramount importance to set the analysis of EPR and CTM on sound basis, thus obtaining a very precise picture of the magnetic interactions in these systems. Finally, the electronic structure of the two complexes, as obtained by this approach, is consistent with the absence of zero-field slow relaxation observed in ac susceptibility.

Slow magnetic relaxation and luminescence properties in neodymium(iii)-4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)butane-1,3-dionato complexes incorporating bipyridyl ligands

A new series of eight-coordinated Nd(iii) complexes derived from 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dionate and bi-pyridyl ligands revealed multifunctional molecular materials as photoluminescent single-molecule magnets (SMMs).

A Single Small-Scale Plutonium Redox Reaction System Yields Three Crystallographically-Characterizable Organoplutonium Complexes

An approach to obtaining substantial amounts of data from a hazardous starting material that can only be obtained and handled in small quantities is demonstrated by the investigation of a single small-scale reaction of cyclooctatetraene, C₈H₈, with a solution obtained from the reduction of Cp'₃Pu (Cp' = C₅H₄SiMe₃) with potassium graphite. This one reaction coupled with oxidation of a product has provided single-crystal X-ray structural data on three organoplutonium compounds as well as information on redox chemistry thereby demonstrating an efficient route to new reactivity and structural information on this highly radioactive element. The crystal structures were obtained from the reduction of C₈H₈ by a putative Pu(II) complex, (Cp'₃Pu^II)^1-, generated in situ, to form the Pu(III) cyclooctatetraenide complex, [K(crypt)][(C₈H₈)₂Pu^III], 1-Pu, and the tetra(cyclopentadienyl) Pu(III) complex, [K(crypt)][Cp'₄Pu^III], 2-Pu. Oxidation of the sample of 1-Pu with Ag(I) afforded a third organoplutonium complex that has been structurally characterized for the first time, (C₈H₈)₂Pu^IV, 3-Pu. Complexes 1-Pu and 3-Pu contain Pu sandwiched between parallel (C₈H₈)^2- rings. The (Cp'₄Pu^III)^- anion in 2-Pu features three η⁵-Cp' rings and one η¹-Cp' ring, which is a rare example of a formal Pu-C η¹-bond. In addition, this study addresses the challenge of small-scale synthesis imparted by radiological and material availability of transuranium isotopes, in particular that of pure metal samples. A route to an anhydrous Pu(III) starting material from the more readily available Pu^IVO₂ was developed to facilitate reproducible syntheses and allow complete spectroscopic analysis of 1-Pu and 2-Pu. Pu^IVO₂ was converted to Pu^IIIBr₃(DME)₂ (DME = CH₃OCH₂CH₂OCH₃) and subsequently Pu^IIIBr₃(THF)_x, which was used to independently synthesize 1-Pu, 2-Pu, and 3-Pu.

The effect of the electronic structure and flexibility of the counteranions on magnetization relaxation in [Dy(L)2(H2O)5]3+ (L = phosphine oxide derivative) pentagonal bipyramidal SIMs

The effects of the electronic structure and flexibility of triflate anions in a new high-U_eff TBPY-7 SMM, [Dy(OPCy₃)₂(H₂O)₅](CF₃SO₃)₃·2OPCy₃, have been analyzed.

A single-ion single-electron cerrous magnet

Herein, we present monometallic Ln(iii) complexes [L₃Ln(NO₃)₃] [where Ln = Ce (1) and La (2)] assembled from a simple reaction of the respective lanthanide nitrate hydrate and a bulky phosphonic diamide ^tBuPO(NHⁱPr)₂ ligand (L), where complex 1 behaves as a single-ion single-electron magnet under a small applied magnetic field. The Ce(iii) ion occupies a nine-coordinate distorted muffin-like coordination environment. The combination of direct and Raman process dominates the relaxation dynamics in 1 under the applied dc field. The low-temperature measurements performed with oriented crystals on a micro-SQUID setup exhibits strong tunnelling at zero-field, consistent with the theoretical results where strong mixing of the ground state with higher excited m_J levels is detected and also throws additional insights on the relaxation dynamics of 1. Ab initio calculations have been performed to understand the origin of anisotropy and models have been proposed for future directions.

High relaxation barrier in neodymium furoate-based field-induced SMMs

Two new neodymium molecular magnets of formula {[Nd(α-fur)₃(H₂O)₂]·DMF}_n (1) and {[Nd_0.065La_0.935(α-fur)₃(H₂O)₂]}_n (2), α-fur = C₄H₃OCOO, have been synthesized. In (1) the furoate ligands, in bidentate bridging mode, consolidate zig-zag chains running along the a-direction. Compound (2) is a magnetically diluted complex of a polymeric chain along the b-axis. Heat capacity, dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements have been performed from 1.8 K up to room temperature. Ab initio calculations yielded the gyromagnetic factors g_x* = 0.52, g_y* = 1.03, g_z* = 4.41 for (1) and g_x* = 1.35, g_y* = 1.98, g_z* = 3.88 for (2), and predicted energy gaps of Δ/k_B = 125.5 K (1) and Δ/k_B = 58.8 K (2). Heat capacity and magnetometry measurements agree with these predictions, and confirm the non-negligible transversal anisotropy of the Kramers doublet ground state. A weak intrachain antiferromagnetic interaction J'/k_B = -3.15 × 10^-3 K was found for (1). No slow relaxation is observed at H = 0, attributed to the sizable transverse anisotropy component, and/or dipolar or exchange interactions enhancing the quantum tunnelling probability. Under an external applied field as small as 80 Oe, two slow relaxation processes appear: above 3 K the first relaxation mechanism is associated to a combination of Orbach process, with a sizeable activation energy U/k_B = 121 K at 1.2 kOe for (1), Raman and direct processes; the second, slowest relaxation mechanism is associated to a direct process, affected by phonon-bottleneck effect. For complex (2) a smaller U/k_B = 61 K at 1.2 kOe is found, together with larger g*-transversal terms, and the low-frequency process is quenched. The reported complexes represent rare polymeric Nd single-ion magnets exhibiting high activation energies among the scarce Nd(iii) family.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Oxo-Bridged Uranyl(V) Dinuclear and Trinuclear Complexes

The uranyl(V) complexes [UO₂(dbm)₂K(18C6)]₂ (dbm = dibenzoylmethanate) and [UO₂(L)]₃(L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate), exhibiting diamond-shaped U₂O₂ and triangular-shaped U₃O₃ cores respectively with 5f¹-5f¹ and 5f¹-5f¹-5f¹ configurations, have been investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The bond order and QTAIM analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the oxo cores is slightly more important for U₃O₃ than for U₂O₂, in line with the shorter U-O distances existing in the trinuclear complex in comparison to those in the binuclear complex. Using the broken symmetry (BS) approach combined with the B3LYP functional for the calculation of the magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) between the magnetic centers, the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of these complexes was confirmed, the estimated J values being respectively equal to -24.1 and -7.2 cm^-1 for the dioxo and trioxo species. It was found that the magnetic exchange is more sensitive to small variations of the core geometry of the dioxo species in comparison to the trioxo species. Although the robust AF exchange coupling within the U_xO_x cores is generally maintained when small variations of the UOU angle are applied, a weak ferromagnetic character appears in the dioxo species when this angle is higher than 114°, its value for the actual structure being equal to 105.9°. The electronic factors driving the magnetic coupling are discussed.

Synthesis, structures and magnetic properties of [(η9-C9H9)Ln(η8-C8H8)] super sandwich complexes

Sandwich complexes are an indispensable part of organometallic chemistry, which is becoming increasingly important in the field of lanthanide-based single molecule magnets. Herein, a fundamental class of pure sandwich complexes, [(η⁹-C₉H₉)Ln(η⁸-C₈H₈)] (Ln=Nd, Sm, Dy, Er), is reported. These neutral and sandwiched lanthanide compounds exclusively contain fully π-coordinated coplanar eight and nine membered CH rings. The magnetic properties of these compounds are investigated, leading to the observation of slow relaxation of the magnetization, including open hysteresis loops up to 10 K for the Er(III) analogue. Fast relaxation of the magnetization is likewise observed near zero field, a highly important characteristic for quantum information processing schemes. Our synthetic strategy is straightforward and utilizes the reaction of [(η⁸-C₈H₈)LnI(thf)_n] complexes with [K(C₉H₉)]. Although all compounds are fully characterized, structural details of the title compounds can also be deduced by Raman spectroscopy only.

Uranocenium: Synthesis, Structure, and Chemical Bonding

Abstraction of iodide from [(η⁵ -C₅ ⁱ Pr₅ )₂ UI] (1) produced the cationic uranium(III) metallocene [(η⁵ -C₅ ⁱ Pr₅ )₂ U]⁺ (2) as a salt of [B(C₆ F₅ )₄ ]^- . The structure of 2 consists of unsymmetrically bonded cyclopentadienyl ligands and a bending angle of 167.82° at uranium. Analysis of the bonding in 2 showed that the uranium 5f orbitals are strongly split and mixed with the ligand orbitals, thus leading to non-negligible covalent contributions to the bonding. Investigation of the dynamic magnetic properties of 2 revealed that the 5f covalency leads to partially quenched anisotropy and fast magnetic relaxation in zero applied magnetic field. Application of a magnetic field leads to dominant relaxation by a Raman process.

How important is the coordinating atom in controlling magnetic anisotropy in uranium(iii) single-ion magnets? A theoretical perspective

Theoretical investigation of actinide based nanomagnets is of paramount interest in the field of molecular magnetism as they offer remarkable properties compared to their lanthanide counterparts. Unlike lanthanides, the magnetic properties of actinides can be fine-tuned by modulating the ligand field as they possess a large metal-ligand covalency. In this regard, two complexes reported earlier have gained attention: [U(BcMe)₃] (1) has been found to show Single-ion Magnet (SIM) characteristics whereas isomeric [U(BpMe)₃] (2) does not exhibit any SIM behaviour. To unravel the origin of the differences observed in magnetic anisotropy, a detailed ab initio CASSCF study has been undertaken on the X-ray structure of complexes 1 and 2. Since actinide compounds exhibit strong covalency, the desired active space needs to be benchmarked to address this issue. Here, we have enlarged the active space systematically from CAS(3,7) to CAS(3,12) where all 5f electrons in 5f orbitals are sequentially expanded to include five formally empty 6d orbitals. Our calculations reveal that the incorporation of the 6d_z² orbital is vital in reproducing many experimental observables such as temperature dependent susceptibility, g-factors, ground state m_J level, and ground-state-excited-state gap. Inclusion of this orbital in the reference space is found to describe better the UH-BH agostic interactions leading to significant variations in the computed parameters. Gaining from this understanding, we have carried out extensive bonding analysis within the DFT framework using tools such as Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) and Atoms In Molecule (AIM) to further probe these weak agostic interactions. Also, predictions to enhance the U-ligand covalency using U-sulphur bonds and the role of the U-C distance and C-U-C bite angles in the nature of anisotropy have been studied, and relevant magneto-structural correlations have been developed. Thus our results for the first time provide a comprehensive understanding of uranium based SMMs and offer ways to fine tune the anisotropy for experimental chemists.

Main Group Chemistry at the Interface with Molecular Magnetism

Innovative synthetic coordination and, increasingly, organometallic chemistry are at the heart of advances in molecular magnetism. Smart ligand design is essential for implementing controlled modifications to the electronic structure and magnetic properties of transition metal and f-element compounds, and many important recent developments use nontraditional ligands based on low-coordinate main group elements to drive the field forward. This review charts progress in molecular magnetism from the perspective of ligands in which the donor atoms range from low-coordinate 2p elements-particularly carbon but also boron and nitrogen-to the heavier p-block elements such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and even bismuth. Emphasis is placed on the role played by novel main group ligands in addressing magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and f-element compounds, which underpins the development of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), a family of magnetic materials that can retain magnetization in the absence of a magnetic field below a blocking temperature. Nontraditional p-block donor atoms, with their relatively diffuse valence orbitals and more diverse bonding characteristics, also introduce scope for tuning the spin-orbit coupling properties and metal-ligand covalency in molecular magnets, which has implications in areas such as magnetic exchange coupling and spin crossover phenomena. The chemistry encompasses transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides and describes recently discovered molecular magnets that can be regarded, currently, as defining the state of the art. This review identifies that main group chemistry at the interface molecular magnetism is an area with huge potential to deliver new types of molecular magnets with previously unseen properties and applications.

Actinide Organometallic Complexes with π-Ligands

Recent developments and results from the organometallic chemistry of the actinides are reviewed. In the last one and a half years the structural data of about 15 organometallic complexes of transuranium actinides (Np or Pu) have been published, all involving π-ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal ion. On the basis of these data, a comparison of these molecules is presented. Depending on the steric demands of the ligands, effects like the actinide contraction seem to be stronger or weaker in the structural features. This indicates that the interplay between the actinide ion and the π-ligand is rather flexible, enabling the formation of stable bonds over a broad range of actinide ion oxidation states.

DFT Investigations of the Magnetic Properties of Actinide Complexes

Over the past 25 years, magnetic actinide complexes have been the object of considerable attention, not only at the experimental level, but also at the theoretical one. Such systems are of great interest, owing to the well-known larger spin–orbit coupling for actinide ions, and could exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization, arising from a large anisotropy barrier, and magnetic hysteresis of purely molecular origin below a given blocking temperature. Furthermore, more diffuse 5f orbitals than lanthanide 4f ones (more covalency) could lead to stronger magnetic super-exchange. On the other hand, the extraordinary experimental challenges of actinide complexes chemistry, because of their rarity and toxicity, afford computational chemistry a particularly valuable role. However, for such a purpose, the use of a multiconfigurational post-Hartree-Fock approach is required, but such an approach is computationally demanding for polymetallic systems—notably for actinide ones—and usually simplified models are considered instead of the actual systems. Thus, Density Functional Theory (DFT) appears as an alternative tool to compute magnetic exchange coupling and to explore the electronic structure and magnetic properties of actinide-containing molecules, especially when the considered systems are very large. In this paper, relevant achievements regarding DFT investigations of the magnetic properties of actinide complexes are surveyed, with particular emphasis on some representative examples that illustrate the subject, including actinides in Single Molecular Magnets (SMMs) and systems featuring metal-metal super-exchange coupling interactions. Examples are drawn from studies that are either entirely computational or are combined experimental/computational investigations in which the latter play a significant role.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a {EuCu5} metallacrown

A {Eu^IIICu₅} metallacrown displays field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, in which the Eu^III with diamagnetic ground state enhances the relaxation rates.

Excited-state effects on magnetic properties of U(iii) and U(iv) pyrazolylborate complexes

For a family of uranium pyrazolylborate complexes, we observe correlations between excited-state mixing and slow relaxation of magnetization for U(iii) complexes, and U⋯B distances in U(iv) complexes.

Closing the Circle of the Lanthanide-Murexide Series: Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior and Near-Infrared Emission of the NdIII Derivative

Up to now, even if murexide-based complexometric studies are performed with all 3d or 4f ions, the crystal structures of the light-lanthanide derivatives of the lanthanide-murexide series are unknown. In this work, we report the crystal structure of the NdIII derivative named NdMurex. Contrary to all known complexes of the 3d or 4f series, a dimeric compound was obtained. As for its already reported DyIII and YbIII parents, the NdIII complex responsible for the color-change behaves as a single-molecule magnet (SMM). This behavior was observed on both the crystalline (NdMurex: Ueff = 6.20(0.80) K, 4.31 cm−1; τ0 = 2.20(0.92) × 10−5 s, Hdc = 1200 Oe) and anhydrous form (NdMurexAnhy: Ueff = 6.25(0.90) K, 4.34 cm−1; τ0 = 4.85(0.40) × 10−5 s, Hdc = 1200 Oe). The SMM behavior is reported also for the anhydrous CeIII derivative (CeMurexAnhy: Ueff = 5.40(0.75) K, 3.75 cm−1; τ0 = 3.02(1.10) × 10−5 s, Hdc = 400 Oe). The Near-Infrared Emission NIR emission was observed for NdMurexAnhy and highlights its bifunctionality.

Structural diversity and photo-physical and magnetic properties of dimeric to 1D polymeric coordination polymers of lighter lanthanide(iii) dinitrobenzoates

Single crystal diffraction studies reveal the formation of the following 10 new complexes of lighter Ln(iii) ions with general formulas {[Ln(μ2-L1)3·(H2O)2]·H2O}n (Ln = Nd (1) and Eu (2)), [Nd(μ2-L2)2·(CH3COO)·(H2O)2]n (3), [Ln2(μ2-L2)5·(L2)·(H2O)4]n (Ln = Sm (4), Ce (5), and Pr (6)), [La2(μ2-L2)6·(H2O)3·(DMF)]n (7) (DMF = dimethylformamide), [Ln(μ2-L2)2·(L2)·(H2O)3]2 (Ln = Eu (8) and Gd (9)) and [Gd(L2)·(CH3COO)2·(H2O)2]2 (10), where L1 and L2 are anions of 3,5- and 2,4-dinitrobenzoic acid, respectively. Complexes 1-7 are 1D coordination polymers, while 8-10 are dinuclear complexes. The luminescence properties of Nd(iii) and Eu(iii) analogues displayed metal-centred emission with L1 exhibiting weak but more efficient sensitization than L2. A study of the magnetic properties of the compounds clearly demonstrated the field-induced single ion magnet behaviour of the Nd(iii) compounds 1 and 3. Their behaviour has been compared to previously reported analogous Nd(iii) complexes and the role of the lattice solvent and polymorphism on the magnetic behaviour has been evaluated.

Single Ion Magnets from 3d to 5f: Developments and Strategies

Single-ion magnets (SIMs), exhibiting slow magnetization relaxation in the absence of the magnetic field, originate from their single spin-carrier centre. In pursuit of high-performance magnetic properties, such as high spin-reversal barrier and high blocking temperature, various metal centres were investigated to establish SIMs, including 3d and 5d transition metal ions, 4f lanthanide ions, and 5f actinide ions, which possess unique zero-field splitting and magnetic properties. Therefore, proper ligand field is of great importance to different types of metals. In the given great breakthroughs since the first SIM, [Pc₂ Tb]^- (Pc=dianion of phthalocyanine), was reported, strategies of ligand field design have emerged. In this review, the developments of SIMs with different metal centres are summarized, as well as the possible strategies.

Boryl- and Silyl-Substituted Mixed Sandwich Compounds of Scandium

An improved, one-pot synthesis of the linear sandwich compound [Sc(η⁵ -C₅ H₅ )(η⁸ -C₈ H₈ )] is presented. The synthetic procedure is amenable to boryl- and silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl and cyclooctatetraenyl ligands, thereby yielding the first functionalized derivatives. We found that the synthesis of the silyl-substituted mixed sandwich complexes produces higher yields when the ligand exchange is carried out stepwise, by isolating the intermediate trimethylsilylated half-sandwich complex [Sc(η⁸ -C₈ H₇ SiMe₃ )Cl(THF)] (THF=tetrahydrofuran). The molecular structures of the parent complex, as well as of its mono-boryl-substituted derivatives, have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In addition, the optical and electrochemical properties of the mixed sandwich complexes are reported.

The “Wanderlust” of Me3Si groups in rare-earth triple-decker complexes: a combined experimental and computational study

The migration of Me₃Si groups (“Wanderlust”) in rare-earth triple-decker sandwich complexes of the type Ln₂(COT′′)₃ (COT′′ = bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraenyl) has been elucidated by a combined experimental and computational study.

Scandium-Mediated Formation of a Bis(tetrahydropentalene)

The reactivity of Li[Sc(COT'')₂ ] (1; COT''=1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraenyl) towards CoCl₂ is considerably different from that of related lanthanide triple-decker sandwich complexes. In addition to the expected triple-decker complex Sc₂ (COT'')₃ (2), the complex Sc₂ {μ-BTHP}(COT'')₂ (3) is formed, which comprises the novel BTHP^2- ligand (BTHP^2- =bis(3,5-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3a,6,6a-tetrahydropentalene-1-yl)diide or bis(2,7-bis(trimethylsilyl)bicyclo[3.3.0]octa-2,7-dien-4-yl)diide, C₁₆ H₁₀ (SiMe₃ )₄^2- ). The formation of 3 is likely facilitated by the fact that scandium prefers η⁸ ,η³  coordination rather than highly symmetric η⁸ ,η⁸  coordination, and the η³ -coordinated COT'' ligand in 1 is activated owing to a loss of aromaticity. Acid hydrolysis of 3 leads to air-stable H₂ BTHP (4).

A Structurally Characterized Organometallic Plutonium(IV) Complex

The blood-red plutonocene complex Pu(1,3-COT'')(1,4-COT'') (4; COT''=η⁸ -bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraenyl) has been synthesized by oxidation of the anionic sandwich complex Li[Pu(1,4-COT'')₂ ] (3) with anhydrous cobalt(II) chloride. The first crystal structure determination of an organoplutonium(IV) complex revealed an asymmetric sandwich structure for 4 where one COT'' ring is 1,3-substituted while the other retains the original 1,4-substitution pattern. The electronic structure of 4 has been elucidated by a computational study, revealing a probable cause for the unexpected silyl group migration.
