Monomeric Alkoxo and Amido Methylnickel(II) Complexes. Synthesis and Heterocumulene Insertion Chemistry

Reactions of cyclonickelated complexes with hydroxylamines and TEMPO˙: isolation of new TEMPOH adducts of Ni(II) and their reactivities with nucleophiles and oxidants

This contribution describes a study on the reactivities of the complexes [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-Ar}Ni(μ-Br)]2, 1a-d (Ar: C6H4, a; 3-Cl-C6H3, b; 3-OMe-C6H3, c; 4-OMe-napthalenyl, d), with hydroxylamines in the presence of TEMPO˙ (TEMPO˙ = (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-yl)oxyl). The results of this study showed that treating 1a-d with a mixture of Et2NOH and TEMPO˙ did not afford the desired oxidation-induced functionalization of the Ni-aryl moiety in 1a-d, giving instead the corresponding κO-TEMPOH adducts [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-Ar}Ni(Br)(κO-TEMPOH)], 3a-d (TEMPOH = N-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine). The TEMPOH moiety in these zwitterionic compounds 3 can be displaced by a large excess of acetonitrile (MeCN), 10 equiv. of morpholine, or 1-2 equivalents of imidazole. Although these reactions have given the authenticated products [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni(Br)(NCMe)], 4a, [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni(Br)(morpholine)], 5a, and [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni(imidazole)2]Br, 6a, a few other products were also detected by NMR, indicating that the observed reactivities are far more complex than simple substitution of the TEMPOH moiety. Similarly, treating 3a with AgOC(O)CF3 results in the isolation of [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni{OC(O)CF3}(κO-TEMPOH)], 7a, arising from the substitution of the bromo ligand, whereas spectroscopic evidence suggests further reactivity, possibly including displacement of TEMPOH and oxidative decomposition.

Synthesis of a diruthenium μ-η4-α-diimine complex via dehydrogenative coupling of cyclic amines and its role in dehydrogenative oxidation of pyrrolidine

The reaction of [Cp‡Ru(μ-H)4RuCp‡] (1: Cp‡ = 1,2,4-tri-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl) with cyclic amines at 180 °C afforded a μ-η4-α-diimine complex, [(Cp‡Ru)2(μ-η4-C2nH4n-4N2)] (5a-c: n = 4, 5, 6), via dehydrogenative coupling of two cyclic amine molecules. An intermediate μ-η2-1-pyrroline complex, [{Cp‡Ru(μ-H)}2(μ-η2-C4H7N)] (2a), was synthesized by the photoreaction of 1 with pyrrolidine and 5a was shown to be formed via the disproportionation of 2a upon thermolysis yielding 1 and a μ-imidoyl complex, [(Cp‡Ru)2(μ-η2:η2-C4H6N)(μ-H)] (3a). Complex 3a was transformed into 5avia the incorporation of 1-pyrroline, which was formed by the reaction of 2a with H2. DFT calculations on the model complexes supported by C5H5 groups at the B3LYP level suggested that the μ-η4-α-diimine ligand is formed via the insertion of a terminal cyclic aminocarbene ligand into the Ru-C bond of the μ-imidoyl group followed by the elimination of hydrogen. Although 5a was inert under an Ar atmosphere, it catalyzed the dehydrogenative oxidation of pyrrolidine under an atmosphere of hydrogen to yield γ-butyrolactam. An active species possessing a terminal cyclic aminocarbene ligand was generated via the heterolytic activation of hydrogen at the Ru-N bond followed by C-C bond cleavage.

Diverse Post-Metathesis Reactivities of Mixed Amido-Isothiocyanato Molybdenum Complexes

Attempts to prepare mixed isothiocyanato-bis(imido) MoVI complexes led to the discovery of post-metathesis rearrangements toward three distinct products (1-3), which feature the NCS-derived chelators [N(NMe2)CS]2- (L1 in dinuclear 1 and 2) and [N(SiMe3)(NMe2)CS]- (L2 in mononuclear 3). Notably, the preparation of bidentate ligand L1 and its coordination chemistry are unprecedented. Together with computational studies, it is proposed that the putative "mono-substituted" intermediate [Mo(NtBu)2(NMe2)(NCS)] serves as the common starting point for the observed molecular transformations. Construction of the [Mo(NtBu)2(NCS)2] core was ultimately possible in the presence of additional stabilizing donors (THF or PMe3), which yielded the complexes [Mo(NtBu)2(NCS)2(THF)2] (4) and [Mo(NtBu)2(NCS)2(PMe3)2] (5).

Copper-Catalyzed Multicomponent Reactions of Intramolecular and Intermolecular Thiotrifluoromethylation of Alkenes: Access to CF3-Containing 2-Iminothiazolidines and Isothioureas

A copper-catalyzed multicomponent reaction of secondary amines bearing allyl substitution, isothiocyanates, and Togni reagent II has been developed under Cs₂CO₃ in DCE at 75 °C. An intermolecular multicomponent reaction of thioureas, activated and unactivated alkenes, and Togni reagent II has also been developed under DMAP in acetonitrile at room temperature. These two alkene difunctionalization reactions provide CF₃-containing 2-iminothiazolindines and isothioureas in moderate to excellent yields with broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance, respectively.

Mechanistic Investigation of the Nickel-Catalyzed Metathesis between Aryl Thioethers and Aryl Nitriles

Functional group metathesis is an emerging field in organic chemistry with promising synthetic applications. However, no complete mechanistic studies of these reactions have been reported to date, particularly regarding the nature of the key functional group transfer mechanism. Unraveling the mechanism of these transformations would not only allow for their further improvement but would also lead to the design of novel reactions. Herein, we describe our detailed mechanistic studies of the nickel-catalyzed functional group metathesis reaction between aryl methyl sulfides and aryl nitriles, combining experimental and computational results. These studies did not support a mechanism proceeding through reversible migratory insertion of the nitrile into a Ni-Ar bond and provided strong support for an alternative mechanism involving a key transmetalation step between two independently generated oxidative addition complexes. Extensive kinetic analysis, including rate law determination and Eyring analysis, indicated the oxidative addition complex of aryl nitrile as the resting state of the catalytic reaction. Depending on the concentration of aryl methyl sulfide, either the reductive elimination of aryl nitrile or the oxidative addition into the C(sp²)-S bond of aryl methyl sulfide is the turnover-limiting step of the reaction. NMR studies, including an unusual ³¹P-²H HMBC experiment using deuterium-labeled complexes, unambiguously demonstrated that the sulfide and cyanide groups exchange during the transmetalation step, rather than the two aryl moieties. In addition, Eyring and Hammett analyses of the transmetalation between two Ni(II) complexes revealed that this central step proceeds via an associative mechanism. Organometallic studies involving the synthesis, isolation, and characterization of all putative intermediates and possible deactivation complexes have further shed light on the reaction mechanism, including the identification of a key deactivation pathway, which has led to an improved catalytic protocol.

Diphosphorus Release and Heterocumulene Oligomerisation by Nickel Complexes

The generation of diphosphorus molecules P2 under mild conditions in solution is a useful strategy to generate diphosphines via [4+2] cycloadditions. We recently described the release of P2 units from the nickel butterfly complex [{(IMes)Ni(CO)}2(μ2,η2:η2-P2)] (IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) upon addition of CO gas. Herein, we developed an alternative protocol for the same process using heterocumulenes. In addition to formation of P4 (the dimerisation product of P2), the reactions afford nickel complexes of novel pincer-type ligands. Aryl isothiocyanates undergo a trimerisation within the coordination sphere of nickel and afford square planar nickel complexes with S-C-S pincer-ligand frameworks. Carbon disulfide coordinates to the [(IMes)Ni]-fragment in an η2-fashion, affording a dinuclear complex. Similar products are formed when the N-heterocyclic carbene nickel(0) complex [(IMes)Ni(vtms)2] is used as a precursor (vtms=vinyltrimethylsilane).

Recent Advances in the Chemistry of Metal Carbamates

Following a related review dating back to 2003, the present review discusses in detail the various synthetic, structural and reactivity aspects of metal species containing one or more carbamato ligands, representing a large family of compounds across all the periodic table. A preliminary overview is provided on the reactivity of carbon dioxide with amines, and emphasis is given to recent findings concerning applications in various fields.

Enhanced Catalytic Activity of Nickel Complexes of an Adaptive Diphosphine-Benzophenone Ligand in Alkyne Cyclotrimerization

Adaptive ligands, which can adapt their coordination mode to the electronic structure of various catalytic intermediates, offer the potential to develop improved homogeneous catalysts in terms of activity and selectivity. 2,2'-Diphosphinobenzophenones have previously been shown to act as adaptive ligands, the central ketone moiety preferentially coordinating reduced metal centers. Herein, the utility of this scaffold in nickel-catalyzed alkyne cyclotrimerization is investigated. The complex [( p-tolL1)Ni(BPI)] ( p-tolL1 = 2,2'-bis(di(para-tolyl)phosphino)-benzophenone; BPI = benzophenone imine) is an active catalyst in the [2 + 2 + 2] cyclotrimerization of terminal alkynes, selectively affording 1,2,4-substituted benzenes from terminal alkynes. In particular, this catalyst outperforms closely related bi- and tridentate phosphine-based Ni catalysts. This suggests a reaction pathway involving a hemilabile interaction of the C=O unit with the nickel center. This is further borne out by a comparative study of the observed resting states and DFT calculations.

Monomeric alkoxide and alkylcarbonate complexes of nickel and palladium stabilized with the iPrPCP pincer ligand: a model for the catalytic carboxylation of alcohols to alkyl carbonates

Monomeric alkoxo complexes of the type [(iPrPCP)M-OR] (M = Ni or Pd; R = Me, Et, CH2CH2OH; iPrPCP = 2,6-bis(diisopropylphosphino)phenyl) react rapidly with CO2 to afford the corresponding alkylcarbonates [(iPrPCP)M-OCOOR]. We have investigated the reactions of these compounds as models for key steps of catalytic synthesis of organic carbonates from alcohols and CO2. The MOCO-OR linkage is kinetically labile, and readily exchanges the OR group with water or other alcohols (R'OH), to afford equilibrium mixtures containing ROH and [(iPrPCP)M-OCOOH] (bicarbonate) or [(iPrPCP)M-OCOOR'], respectively. However, [(iPrPCP)M-OCOOR] complexes are thermally stable and remain indefinitely stable in solution when these are kept in sealed vessels. The constants for the exchange equilibria have been interpreted, showing that CO2 insertion into M-O bonds is thermodynamically more favorable for M-OR than for M-OH. Alkylcarbonate complexes [(iPrPCP)M-OCOOR] fail to undergo nucleophilic attack by ROH to yield organic carbonates ROCOOR, either intermolecularly (using neat ROH solvent) or in intramolecular fashion (e.g., [(iPrPCP)M-OCOOCH2CH2OH]). In contrast, [(iPrPCP)M-OCOOMe] complexes react with a variety of electrophilic methylating reagents (MeX) to afford dimethylcarbonate and [(iPrPCP)M-X]. The reaction rates increase in the order X = OTs < IMe ≪ OTf and Ni < Pd. These findings suggest that a suitable catalyst design should combine basic and electrophilic alcohol activation sites in order to perform alkyl carbonate syntheses via direct alcohol carboxylation.

Versatile Coordination and C-C Coupling of Diphosphine-Tethered Imine Ligands with Ni(II) and Ni(0)

Ligands that can adapt their coordination mode to the electronic properties of a metal center are of interest to support catalysis or small molecule activation processes. In this context, the ability of imine moieties to bind in either an η¹(N)-fashion via σ-donation of the lone pair or, less commonly, in an η²(C,N)-fashion via π-coordination is potentially attractive for the design of new metal–ligand cooperative systems. Herein, the coordination chemistry of chelating ligands with a diphosphine imine framework (PCNP) to nickel is investigated. The imine moiety binds in an η¹(N)-fashion in a Ni(II)Cl₂ complex. The uncommon η²(C,N)-interaction is obtained in Ni(0) complexes in the presence of a PPh₃ coligand. Increasing the bulk on the phosphine side-arms in the Ni(0) complexes, by substituting phenyl for o-tolyl groups, leads to a distinct binding mode in which only one of the phosphorus atoms is coordinated. In the absence of a coligand, a mixture of two different dimeric Ni(0) complexes is formed. In one of them, the imine adopts an uncommon η¹(N)η²(C,N) bridging mode of the ligand to nickel, while the second one may involve reactivity on the ligand by the formation of a new C–C bond by oxidative coupling. The latter is supported by the isolation and structural characterization of a crystalline bis-CO derivative featuring a C–C bond formed by oxidative coupling of two imine moieties.

The coordination chemistry of a series of diphosphine-imine ligands (PCNP) to Ni is investigated, with the purpose of developing systems that present metal−ligand cooperativity. The ligands bind in versatile ways, adapting to the oxidation state and coordination environment of the metal center. Additionally, a dimeric derivative undergoes oxidative C−C coupling in the presence of CO, resulting in an unusual mixed valence Ni(II)/Ni(0) dinuclear complex.

Unusual activation pathways of amines in the reactions with molybdenum pentachloride

Both single electron reduction and oxidation of Mo(v) guide the activation of a series of aliphatic amines when these are allowed to react with MoCl₅.

Oxaziridine cleavage with a low-valent nickel complex: competing C–O and C–N fragmentation from oxazanickela(ii)cyclobutanes

Nickel(0) was found to oxidatively add to oxaziridines to form oxazanickelacyclobutanes which cleave to yield complicated mixtures, including nickel imido and aldehyde complexes.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of azobenzene by low-valent nickel complexes: a route to 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles and 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazolines

The one-pot synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles by the transfer hydrogenation of azobenzene, using benzylamine as a hydrogen donor is reported, catalyzed by 2 mol% of [Ni(COD)₂] : dippe.

Tandem hydrogenation and condensation of fluorinated α,β-unsaturated ketones with primary amines, catalyzed by nickel

A simple homogeneous catalytic system based on nickel phosphine complexes has been developed for the transfer hydrogenation and condensation of α,β-unsaturated ketones to yield saturated ones and saturated imines using primary amines as hydrogen donors.

Fast and reversible insertion of carbon dioxide into zirconocene-alkoxide bonds. A mechanistic study

In two consecutive equilibria the compound (Cp*)2Zr(OMe)2 undergoes insertion of CO2 to form the mono- and bis-hemicarbonates. Both equilibria are exothermic but entropically disfavoured. Magnetisation transfer experiments gave kinetic data for the first equilibrium showing that the rate of insertion is overall second order with a rate constant of 3.20 ± 0.12 M(-1) s(-1), which is substantially higher than those reported for other early transition metal alkoxides, which are currently the best homogeneous catalysts for dimethyl carbonate formation from methanol and CO2. Activation parameters for the insertion reaction point to a highly ordered transition state and we interpret that as there being a substantial interaction between the CO2 and the metal during the C-O bond formation. This is supported by DFT calculations showing the lateral attack by CO2 to have the lowest energy transition state.

Synthesis of tetra-substituted imidazoles and 2-imidazolines by Ni(0)-catalyzed dehydrogenation of benzylic-type imines

A one pot methodology using simple imines allowed the formation of N-substituted imidazoles and imidazolines.

Zirconium complexes incorporated with asymmetrical tridentate pincer type mono- and di-anionic pyrrolyl ligands: mechanism and reactivity as catalytic precursors

The reactions of Zr(NR(2))(4) (1, R = Me; 2, R = Et) with an asymmetrical tridentate pincer type pyrrole ligand precursor [C(4)H(2)NH(2-CH(2)NH(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))] and treatment of the derivatives with either PhNCS or PhNCO have been carried out and characterized. Reacting Zr(NR(2))(4) (1, R = Me; 2, R = Et) with [C(4)H(2)NH(2-CH(2)NH(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))] generates Zr[C(4)H(2)N(2-CH(2)N(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))](NR(2))(2) (3, R = Me; 4, R = Et) in high yield along with the elimination of 2 equiv of dimethylamine or diethylamine, respectively. Interestingly, while changing the solvent from Et(2)O to CH(2)Cl(2), the complex Zr[C(4)H(2)N(2-CH(2)N(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))][C(4)H(2)N(2-CH(2)NH(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))]Cl (5) is produced by undergoing C-Cl bond cleavage. Furthermore, reaction of either 3 or 4 with 1 or 2 equiv of PhNCS or PhNCO yields Zr[C(4)H(2)N(2-CH(2)N(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))](NMe(2))[PhNC(NMe(2))S] (6), Zr[C(4)H(2)N(2-CH(2)N(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))](NEt(2))[PhNC(NEt(2))O] (7) and Zr[C(4)H(2)N(2-CH(2)NH(t)Bu)(5-CH(2)NMe(2))][PhNC(NEt(2))O](3) (8), respectively. All the aforementioned complexes were characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectrometry and the molecular structures of 5, 6, and 8 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Complexes 4, 5, and 7 initiated the ethylene polymerization in the presence of MAO as the co-catalyst.

Activation of carbon dioxide by divalent tin alkoxides complexes

A series of terminal tin(II) alkoxides have been synthesized utilizing the bulky β-diketiminate ligand [{N(2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3))-C(Me)}(2)CH] (BDI). The nucleophilicities of these alkoxides have been examined, and unexpected trends were observed. For instance, (BDI)SnOR only reacts with highly activated aliphatic electrophiles such as methyl triflate, but reacts reversibly with carbon dioxide. Both the rate of reaction and the degree of reversibility is dependent upon minor changes in the alkoxide ligand, with the bulkier tert-butoxide ligand displaying slower reactivity than the corresponding isopropyl ligand, although the latter system is a more exergonic reaction. Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations show that the differences in the reversibility of carbon dioxide insertion can be attributed to the ground-state energy differences of tin alkoxides while the rate of reaction is attributed to relative bond strengths of the Sn-O bonds. The mechanism of carbon dioxide insertion is discussed.

Carbon dioxide activation by "non-nucleophilic" lead alkoxides

A series of terminal lead alkoxides have been synthesized utilizing the bulky beta-diketiminate ligand [{N(2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3))C(Me)}(2)CH](-) (BDI). The nucleophilicities of these alkoxides have been examined, and unexpected trends were observed. For instance, (BDI)PbOR reacts with methyl iodide only under forcing conditions yet reacts readily, but reversibly, with carbon dioxide. The degree of reversibility is strongly dependent upon minor changes in the R group. For instance, when R = isopropyl, the reversibility is only observed when the resulting alkyl carbonate is treated with other heterocumulenes; however, when R = tert-butyl, the reversibility is apparent upon any application of reduced pressure to the corresponding alkyl carbonate. The differences in the reversibility of carbon dioxide insertion are attributed to the ground-state energy differences of lead alkoxides. The mechanism of carbon dioxide insertion is discussed.
