Abstract
The importance of ion pairing in different fields of chemistry is widely recognized. In this work, we have synthesized a set of cationic p-cymene ruthenium complexes of general formula [(p-cym)Ru(L')(κ2-O^N-L)]X (p-cym = p-cymene; L' = N-methylimidazole (MeIm), N-ethylpiperidylimidazole (EpipIm), 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA); L = 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)phenolato (L1), 2-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl)phenolato (L2); X = Cl-, BF4-, OTf-, BPh4-). X-ray diffraction studies on selected complexes revealed relatively strong anion-cation interactions in the solid state mainly based on N-H···X (X = Cl, F, O) and C-H···π interactions, also observed in the DFT-modeled complexes in the gas phase. Moreover, NMR studies showed that they exist as intimate ion pairs in solution and, remarkably, as head-to-tail quadruples in the particular case of the cation [(p-cym)Ru(MeIm)(κ2- O^N-L1)]+ ([1]+) with Cl- and BPh4- as counteranions. Furthermore, a value of ΔG = -2.9 kcal mol-1 at 299 K has been estimated for the equilibrium {[1]BPh4···[1]BPh4} ⇆ 2{[1]+···BPh4-} in concentrated CDCl3 solutions. In addition, preliminary studies concerning the cytotoxic properties against HeLa cell lines of the derivatives suggested a positive effect derived from the presence of the lipophilic BPh4- anion and also from the NH group of the benzimidazolyl fragment.

Abstract
α-Diimines are among the most robust and versatile ligands available in synthetic coordination chemistry, possessing finely tunable steric and electronic properties. A series of novel cationic ruthenium(II) p-cymene complexes bearing simple α-diimine ligands, [(η6- p-cymene)RuCl{κ2 N-(HCNR)2}]NO3 (R = Cy, [1]NO3; R = 4-C6H10OH, [2]NO3; R = 4-C6H4OH, [3]NO3), were prepared in near-quantitative yields as their nitrate salts. [2]NO3 displays high water solubility. The potential of the α-diimine ligand in [3]NO3 as a carrier of bioactive molecules was investigated via esterification reactions with the hydroxyl groups. Thus, the double-functionalized derivatives [(η6- p-cymene)RuCl{κ2 N-(HCN(4-C6H4OCO-R))2}]NO3 (R = aspirinate, [5]NO3; valproate, [6]NO3) and also [4]Cl (R = Me) were obtained in good-to-high yields. UV-vis and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetric studies in aqueous solution revealed only minor ruthenium chloride hydrolytic cleavage, biologically accessible reduction potentials, and pH-dependent behavior of [3]NO3. Density functional theory analysis was performed in order to compare the Ru-Cl bond strength in [1]+ with the analogous ethylenediamine complex, showing that the higher stability observed in the former is related to the electron-withdrawing properties of the α-diimine ligand. In vitro cytotoxicity studies were performed against tumorigenic (A2780 and A2780cisR) and nontumorigenic (HEK-293) cell lines, with the complexes bearing simple α-diimine ligands ranging from inactive to IC50 values in the low micromolar range. The complexes functionalized with bioactive components, i.e., [5]NO3 and [6]NO3, exhibited a marked increase in the cytotoxicity with respect to the precursor [3]NO3.

Abstract
A combined experimental/theoretical investigation on the cooperativity between hydrogen- and halogen bonds is presented. In this study, it is shown that selenourea can interact at the same time with a benzoate anion and a polarized iodine, with the two interactions influencing and enhancing each other.

Abstract
Even though the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model has been successfully used by chemists since the 1950s, no experimental methodology is yet known to unambiguously estimate the constituents (donation and back-donation) of a metal-ligand interaction. It is demonstrated here that one of these components, the metal-to-ligand π back-donation, can be effectively probed by NMR measurements aimed at determining the rotational barrier of a C-N bond (ΔHr (≠) ) of a nitrogen acyclic carbene ligand. A large series of gold(I) complexes have been synthesized and analyzed, and it was found that the above experimental observables show an accurate correlation with back-donation, as defined theoretically by the appropriate charge displacement originated upon bond formation. The proposed method is potentially of wide applicability for analyzing the ligand effect in metal catalysts and guiding their design.

Abstract
New [(N(-),N,N(-))ZrR2] dialkyl complexes (N(-),N,N(-)=pyrrolyl-pyridyl-amido or indolyl-pyridyl-amido; R=Me or CH2Ph) have been synthesised and tested as pre-catalysts for ethene and propene polymerisation in combination with different activators, such as B(C6F5)3, [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], [HNMe2Ph][B(C6F5)4] or solid AlMe3-depleted methylaluminoxane (DMAO). Polyethylene (M(w)>2 MDa and M(w)/M(n)= 1.3-1.6) has been produced if pre-catalysts were activated with 1000 equivalents of DMAO (based on Al) [activity >1000 kg(PE)(mol([Zr]) h mol atm)(-1)] or by using a higher pre-catalyst concentration and a mixture of [HNPhMe2][B(C6F5)4] (1 equiv) and AliBu2H (60 equiv). In the case of propene polymerisation, activity has been observed only if pre-catalysts were treated with an excess of AliBu2H prior to addition of DMAO, which led to highly isotactic polypropylene ([mmmm]>95%). Neutral pre-catalysts and ion pairs derived from their activation have been characterised in solution by using advanced 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy experiments. The detection and rationalisation of intercationic NOEs clearly showed the formation of dimeric species in which some pyrrolyl or indolyl π-electron density of one unit is engaged in stabilising the metal centre of the other unit, which relegates the counterions in the second coordination sphere. The solid-state structure of the dimeric indolyl-pyridyl-amidomethylzirconium derivative, determined by X-ray diffraction studies, points toward a weak Zr···η(3)-indolyl interaction. It can be hypothesised that the formation of dimeric cationic species hampers monomer coordination (especially of less reactive α-olefins) and that addition of AliBu2H is crucial to split the homodimers.

Abstract
Solid state (13)C and (15)N chemical shifts of uracil and imidazole have been calculated using a 2-layer ONIOM approach at 32 levels of theory. The effect of electron correlation between two layers has been investigated by choosing two different kinds of layer selection. Factorial design has been applied as a multivariate technique to analyze the effect of wave function and layer selection on solid state (13)C and (15)N chemical shifts calculations. PBEPBE/6-311+G(d,p) was recommended as an optimally selected level of theory for high layer in both models. It is illustrated that considering the electron correlation of two layers of ONIOM models is important factor to calculate solid state (15)N chemical shifts. The agreement between the calculated and experimental values of solid state (13)C and (15)N chemical shifts using ONIOM (PBEPBE/6-311+G(d,p):AM1) for both uracil and imidazole confirmed the reliability of the selected wave functions and layer selection.

Abstract
A reconsideration of the (1)H NMR spectra of cationic transition metal complexes exhibiting the features of cyclophanes on the basis of Mislow's classification of topic groups arrives at the conclusion that the spectral changes triggered by chiral counterions reflect an intracationic diastereotopication of enantiotopic protons rather than the existence of pairs of long-lived diastereomeric ion pairs.
