Abstract
In 2007 two of us defined the σ-Complex Assisted Metathesis mechanism (Perutz and Sabo-Etienne, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 2578-2592), that is, the σ-CAM concept. This new approach to reaction mechanisms brought together metathesis reactions involving the formation of a variety of metal-element bonds through partner-interchange of σ-bond complexes. The key concept that defines a σ-CAM process is a single transition state for metathesis that is connected by two intermediates that are σ-bond complexes while the oxidation state of the metal remains constant in precursor, intermediates and product. This mechanism is appropriate in situations where σ-bond complexes have been isolated or computed as well-defined minima. Unlike several other mechanisms, it does not define the nature of the transition state. In this review, we highlight advances in the characterization and dynamic rearrangements of σ-bond complexes, most notably alkane and zincane complexes, but also different geometries of silane and borane complexes. We set out a selection of catalytic and stoichiometric examples of the σ-CAM mechanism that are supported by strong experimental and/or computational evidence. We then draw on these examples to demonstrate that the scope of the σ-CAM mechanism has expanded to classes of reaction not envisaged in 2007 (additional σ-bond ligands, agostic complexes, sp2 -carbon, surfaces). Finally, we provide a critical comparison to alternative mechanisms for metathesis of metal-element bonds.

Abstract
Polyethylene-poly(methyl acrylate) multiblock copolymers were obtained using a catalyst system consisting of a pentamethylcyclopentadienyl cobalt complex (CoIII(η5-C5H5)P(OMe)3I2) and iso-butyl modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO). As the chain-growth mechanism, the self-switching between organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) and coordination-insertion polymerization (CIP) is suggested. As a possible polymerization mechanism, we propose that (1) the methyl and iso-butyl groups transfer from Al to Co and the single methyl acrylate (MA) unit insertion into the Me-Co and H-Co allows for the in situ formation of Co-C(COOMe) bonds as an initiator for OMRP of MA, (2) the migratory insertion of ethylene into Co-C(COOMe) bonds leads to the formation of an alkyl-Co species as active species for CIP of ethylene, and (3) MA insertion to the alkyl-Co to regenerate a Co-C(COOMe) bond. The architectures of copolymers were confirmed by various nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) analyses.

Abstract
Agostic interactions between a C-H bond and a transition metal are commonly crucial in catalytic polymerization processes. Herein, a quantitative study of the nature of β-agostic interactions in a series of systems of importance in C-H bond activation reactions is reported. The analysis, characterized by the use of a coupled-cluster-based energy decomposition scheme, demonstrates that short-range London dispersion between the agostic C-H bond and the metal center plays a fundamental role in affecting the structural stability of these systems, contrary to a widely held view. These results are used to rationalize a series of previously published experimental findings.

Abstract
Transition metal hydride complexes are usually amphoteric, not only acting as hydride donors, but also as Brønsted-Lowry acids. A simple additive ligand acidity constant equation (LAC for short) allows the estimation of the acid dissociation constant Ka(LAC) of diamagnetic transition metal hydride and dihydrogen complexes. It is remarkably successful in systematizing diverse reports of over 450 reactions of acids with metal complexes and bases with metal hydrides and dihydrogen complexes, including catalytic cycles where these reactions are proposed or observed. There are links between pKa(LAC) and pKa(THF), pKa(DCM), pKa(MeCN) for neutral and cationic acids. For the groups from chromium to nickel, tables are provided that order the acidity of metal hydride and dihydrogen complexes from most acidic (pKa(LAC) -18) to least acidic (pKa(LAC) 50). Figures are constructed showing metal acids above the solvent pKa scales and organic acids below to summarize a large amount of information. Acid-base features are analyzed for catalysts from chromium to gold for ionic hydrogenations, bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen oxidation and evolution electrocatalysis, H/D exchange, olefin hydrogenation and isomerization, hydrogenation of ketones, aldehydes, imines, and carbon dioxide, hydrogenases and their model complexes, and palladium catalysts with hydride intermediates.
