Abstract
Actinide +IV complexes with six nitrates [AnIV(NO3)6]2- (An = Th, U, Np, and Pu) have been studied by 15N and 17O NMR spectroscopy in solution and first-principles calculations. Magnetic susceptibilities were evaluated experimentally using the Evans method and are in good agreement with the ab initio values. The evolution in the series of the crystal field parameters deduced from ab initio calculations is discussed. The NMR paramagnetic shifts are analyzed based on ab initio calculations. Because the cubic symmetry of the complex quenches the dipolar contribution, they are only of Fermi contact origin. They are evaluated from first-principles based on a complete active space/density functional theory (DFT) strategy, in good accordance with the experimental one. The ligand hyperfine coupling constants are deduced from paramagnetic shifts and calculated using unrestricted DFT. The latter are decomposed in terms of the contribution of molecular orbitals. It highlights two pathways for the delocalization of the spin density from the metallic open-shell 5f orbitals to the NMR active nuclei, either through the valence 5f hybridized with 6d to the valence 2p molecular orbitals of the ligands, or by spin polarization of the metallic 6p orbitals which interact with the 2s-based molecular orbitals of the ligands.

Abstract
The preparation of an actinide substituted cubane cluster, (Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*UI2, and its reduced derivatives are reported. Structural and spectroscopic investigations provide insight into the unique interactions between the actinide and its redox-active molybdenum sulphide metalloligand, serving as a model to study atomically-dispersed, low-valent actinide ions on MoS2 surfaces. To probe the ability of the assembly to facilitate multielectron small molecule activation, the reactivity of the fully-reduced cluster, (Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*U, with azobenzene was investigated. Addition of the substrate results in the formation of a cis-bis-imido cluster, (Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*U(NPh)2. Cooperative reactivity between the actinide and redox-active support facilitates the 4e--reduction of substrate.

Abstract
Understanding the fundamental chemistry of soft N,S-donor ligands with actinides across the series is critical for separation science toward sustainable nuclear energy. This task is particularly challenging when the ligands are redox active. We herein report a series of actinyl complexes with a N,S-donor redox-active ligand that stabilizes different oxidation states across the actinide series. These complexes are isolated and characterized in the gas phase, along with high-level electronic structure studies. The redox-active N,S-donor ligand in the products, C5H4NS, acts as a monoanion in [UVIO2(C5H4NS-)]+ but as a neutral radical with unpaired electrons localized on the sulfur atom in [NpVO2(C5H4NS•)]+ and [PuVO2(C5H4NS•)]+, resulting in different oxidation states for uranium and transuranic elements. This is rationalized by considering the relative energy levels of actinyl(VI) 5f orbitals and S 3p lone pair orbitals of the C5H4NS- ligand and the cooperativity between An-N and An-S bonds that provides additional stability for the transuranic elements.

Abstract
Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) structures and Raman spectra of a series of new isomorphous molecular An(IV)-oxalate compounds (Th, U, Np, and Pu) are reported. These complexes are crystallized with cobalt(III) hexamine ([Co(NH3)6]3+) as the counter cations, [Co(NH3)6]2[An(C2O4)5]·4H2O, revealing five bidentate nonbridging oxalate ligands in the first coordination sphere (CN = 10). The nonbridging oxalate is rather uncommon for An(IV)-oxalate systems, which are widely characterized as polymeric compounds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to examine the bonding between An(IV) cations and oxalate ligands. For comparison, we also report results obtained for the An(IV)-hexanitrate series, [(C2H5)4N]2[An(NO3)6] (with An = Th, U, Np, Pu, and Ce), which consists of O-donor ligands as well but with a larger coordination number (CN = 12). The bonding analysis confirms that the actinide-oxygen bond is predominantly ionic with a minor increase in covalency from Th to U and slight variations from U to Pu. Further comparison showed that the charge transfer increases slightly when increasing the number of anions in the coordination sphere (C2O42-: CN = 10; NO3-: CN = 12), but covalent effects as indicated by the amount of internuclear electron density accumulation are small and similar for oxalate and nitrate.

Abstract
The magnetic properties of LnIII and AnIII complexes formed with dipicolinate ligands have been studied by NMR spectroscopy. To know precisely the geometries of these complexes, a crystallographic study by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) in solution was performed. Several methods to separate the paramagnetic shifts observed in the NMR spectra were applied to these complexes. Methods using a number of nuclei of the dipicolinate ligands revealed an abrupt change in the geometries of the complexes and a metal-ligand interaction in the middle of the lanthanide series. A study of the variation of the paramagnetic shifts with temperature demonstrated that higher-order terms of the dipolar and contact contributions are required, especially for the lightest LnIII and almost all the studied AnIII . Bleaney's parameters <Sz >a and C a D relating to the contact and dipolar terms, respectively, were deduced from experimental data and compared with the results of ab initio calculations. Quite a good agreement was found for the temperature dependencies of <Sz >a and C a D . However, the C a D values obtained from cation magnetic anisotropy calculations showed some discrepancies with the values derived from Bleaney's equation defined for LnIII . Other parameters, such as the crystal field parameter and the hyperfine constants Fi obtained from the experimental data of the [An(ethyl-dpa)3 ]3- complexes (ethyl-dpa=4-ethyl-2,6-dipicolinic acid), are at odds with the assumptions underlying Bleaney's theory.

Abstract
The reaction of [UI3(thf)4] with the sodium or lithium salts of hydrobis(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)borate ligands ([H(R)B(timMe)2]-) in a 1 : 2 ratio, in tetrahydrofuran, gave the U(iii) complexes [UI{κ3-H,S,S'-H(R)B(timMe)2}2(thf)2] (R = H (1), Ph (2)) in good yields. Crystals of [UI{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(thf)2] (2) were obtained by recrystallization from a tetrahydrofuran/acetonitrile solution, and the ion-separated uranium complex [U{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(CH3CN)3][I] (3-I) was obtained by dissolution of 2 in acetonitrile followed by recrystallization. One-electron oxidation of 2 with AgBPh4 or I2 resulted in the formation of the cationic U(iv) complexes [U{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}3][X] (X = BPh4 (6-BPh4), I (6-I)), due to a ligand redistribution process. These complexes are the first examples of homoleptic poly(azolyl)borate U(iv) complexes. Treatment of complex 2 with azobenzene led to the isolation of crystals of the U(iv) compound [UI{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(κ2-timMe)] (7). Treatment of 2 with pyridine-N oxide (pyNO) led to the formation of the uranyl complex [UO2{κ2-S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2] (8) and of complex 6-I, while from the reaction of [U{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(thf)3][BPh4] (5) with pyNO, the oxo-bridged U(iv) complex [{U{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(pyNO)}2(μ-O)][BPh4]2 (9) was also obtained. In the U(iii) and U(iv) complexes, the bis(azolyl)borate ligands bind to the uranium center in a κ3-H,S,S' coordination mode, while in the U(vi) complex the ligands bind to the metal in a κ2-S,S' mode. The presence of UH-B interactions in the solid-state, for the nine-coordinate complexes 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 and for the eight-coordinate complex 9, was supported by IR spectroscopy and/or X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
The organometallic tris-cyclopentadienide actinide(III) (AnCp3 ) complexes were first reported about 50 years ago. However, up until now, only the NpCp3 solid state structure has been studied. Here we report on the solid state structures of UCp3 and PuCp3 which are isostructural to the Np analogue. The structural models are supported by theoretical calculations and compared to their lanthanide analogues. The observed trends in changes of bond lengths might be indicator for an increased covalency in the bonding in the tris-cyclopentadienide actinide(III) complexes (AnCp3 ) compared to their lanthanide homologues.

Abstract
Electronic structures and magnetic properties of the binuclear bis(μ-oxo) U(IV)/U(IV) K2[{(((nP,Me)ArO)3tacn)U(IV)}2(μ-O)2] and U(V)/U(V) [{(((nP,Me)ArO)3tacn)U(V)}2(μ-O)2] (tacn = triazacyclononane, nP = neopentyl) complexes, exhibiting [U(μ-O)2U] diamond-core structural motifs, have been investigated computationally using scalar relativistic Density Functional Theory (DFT) combined with the Broken Symmetry (BS) approach for their magnetic properties. Using the B3LYP hybrid functional, the BS ground state of the pentavalent [U(V)(μ-O)2U(V)] 5f(1)-5f(1) complex has been found of lower energy than the high spin (HS) triplet state, thus confirming the antiferromagnetic character in agreement with experimental magnetic susceptibility measurements. The nonmagnetic character observed for the tetravalent K2[U(IV)(μ-O)2U(IV)] 5f(2)-5f(2) species is also predicted by our DFT calculations, which led practically to the same energy for the HS and BS states. As reported for related dioxo diuranium(V) systems, superexchange is likely to be responsible for the antiferromagnetic coupling through the π-network orbital pathway within the (μ-O)2 bridge, the dissymmetrical structure of the U2O2 core playing a determining role. In the case of the U(IV) species, our computations indicate that the K(+) counterions are likely to play a role for the observed magnetic property. Finally, the MO analysis, in conjunction with NPA and QTAIM analyses, clarify the electronic structures of the studied complexes. In particular, the fact that the experimentally attempted chemical oxidation of the U(V) species does not lead straightforwardly to binuclear complexes U(VI) is clarified by the MO analysis.

Abstract
Treatment of the metallacycle [UN*2(N,C)] [N* = N(SiMe3)2; N,C = CH2SiMe2N(SiMe3)] with [HNEt3][BPh4], [HNEt3]Cl, and [pyH][OTf] (OTf = OSO2CF3) gave the cationic compound [UN*3][BPh4] (1) and the neutral complexes [UN*3X] [X = Cl (3), OTf (4)], respectively. The dinuclear complex [{UN*(μ-N,C)(μ-OTf)}2] (5) and its tetrahydrofuran (THF) adduct [{UN*(N,C)(THF)(μ-OTf)}2] (6) were obtained by thermal decomposition of 4. The successive addition of NEt4CN or KCN to 1 led to the formation of the cyanido-bridged dinuclear compound [(UN*3)2(μ-CN)][BPh4] (7) and the mononuclear mono- and bis(cyanide) complexes [UN*3(CN)] (2) and [M][UN*3(CN)2] [M = NEt4 (8), K(THF)4 (9)], while crystals of [K(18-crown-6)][UN*3(CN)2] (10) were obtained by the oxidation of [K(18-crown-6)][UN*3(CN)] with pyridine N-oxide. The THF adduct of 1, [UN*3(THF)][BPh4], and complexes 2-7, 9 and 10 were characterized by their X-ray crystal structure. In contrast to their U(III) analogues [NMe4][UN*3(CN)] and [K(18-crown-6)]2[UN*3(CN)2] in which the CN anions are coordinated to the metal center via the C atom, complexes 2 and 9 exhibit the isocyanide U-NC coordination mode of the cyanide ligand. This U(III)/U(IV) differentiation has been analyzed using density functional theory calculations. The observed preferential coordinations are well explained considering the electronic structures of the different species and metal-ligand bonding energies. A comparison of the different quantum descriptors, i.e., bond orders, NPA/QTAIM data, and energy decomposition analysis, has allowed highlighting of the subtle balance between covalent, ionic, and steric factors that govern the U-CN/NC bonding.

Abstract
Reaction of UCl(4) with 5 equiv of Li(N═C(t)BuPh) generates the homoleptic U(IV) ketimide complex [Li(THF)(2)][U(N═C(t)BuPh)(5)] (1) in 71% yield. Similarly, reaction of UCl(4) with 5 equiv of Li(N═C(t)Bu(2)) affords [Li(THF)][U(N═C(t)Bu(2))(5)] (2) in 67% yield. Oxidation of 2 with 0.5 equiv of I(2) results in the formation of the neutral U(V) complex U(N═C(t)Bu(2))(5) (3). In contrast, oxidation of 1 with 0.5 equiv of I(2), followed by addition of 1 equiv of Li(N═C(t)BuPh), generates the octahedral U(V) ketimide complex [Li][U(N═C(t)BuPh)(6)] (4) in 68% yield. Complex 4 can be further oxidized to the U(VI) ketimide complex U(N═C(t)BuPh)(6) (5). Complexes 1-5 were characterized by X-ray crystallography, while SQUID magnetometry, EPR spectroscopy, and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy measurements were also preformed on complex 4. Using this data, the crystal field splitting parameters of the f orbitals were determined, allowing us to estimate the amount of f orbital participation in the bonding of 4.

Abstract
Treatment of Cp(3)Er with one equivalent of benzimidazole-2-thiol (H(2)Bzimt) in THF affords the monoanionic HBzimt(-) complex Cp(2)Er(η(2)-HBzimt)(THF)(2) (1). Reaction of Cp(3)Yb with two equivalents of H(2)Bzimt gives complex CpYb(η(2)-HBzimt)(2)(THF) (2) at room temperature. Treatment of Cp(3)Ln with three equivalents of H(2)Bzimt in reflux THF affords the homoleptic Ln(η(2)-HBzimt)(3)(THF)(2) (Ln = Er (3), Y (4)). Cp(3)Ln reacts with 0.5 equivalents of H(2)Bzimt to afford the dianionic Bzimt(2-) complexes [(Cp(2)Ln)(THF)](2)(μ-Bzimt) (Ln = Yb (5), Er (6), Dy (7), Y (8)) in good yields, in which the Bzimt(2-) ligand bridges the two metals in an μ-η(2):η(2) coordination mode. Interestingly, controlled hydrolysis of complexes Cp(2)Ln(η(2)-HBzimt)(THF)(2), CpLn(η(2)-HBzimt)(2)(THF) and [(Cp(2)Ln)(THF)](2)(μ-Bzimt) produces the same tetranuclear complexes [CpLn(μ(3)-OH)(μ-η(1):η(2)-HBzimt)](4) (Ln = Yb (9), Er (10), Y (11)), indicating that the hydrolysis selectivity greatly depends on the number of coordinated cyclopentadienyl groups. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic properties and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract
Oxidative halogenation with trityl chloride provides convenient access to Ce(IV) and U(IV) chloroamides [M(N{SiMe(3)}(2))(3)Cl] and their N-heterocyclic carbene derivatives, [M(L)(N{SiMe(3)}(2))(2)Cl] (L = OCMe(2)CH(2)(CNCH(2)CH(2)NDipp) Dipp = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)). Computational analysis of the bonding in these and a fluoro analogue, [U(L)(N{SiMe(3)}(2))(2)F], provides new information on the covalency in this relative rare oxidation state for molecular cerium complexes. Computational studies reveal increased Mayer bond orders in the actinide carbene bond compared with the lanthanide carbene bond, and natural and atoms-in-molecules analyses suggest greater overall ionicity in the cerium complexes than in the uranium analogues.

Abstract
We describe the use of Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and both ground-state and time-dependent hybrid density functional theory (DFT) to probe the electronic structure and determine the degree of orbital mixing in M-Cl bonds for (C(5)Me(5))(2)MCl(2) (M = Ti, 1; Zr, 2; Hf, 3; Th, 4; U, 5), where we can directly compare a class of structurally similar compounds for d- and f-elements. Pre-edge features in the Cl K-edge XAS data for the group IV transition-metals 1-3 provide direct evidence of covalent M-Cl orbital mixing. The amount of Cl 3p character was experimentally determined to be 25%, 23%, and 22% per M-Cl bond for 1-3, respectively. For actinides, we find a pre-edge shoulder for 4 (Th) and distinct and weak pre-edge features for U, 5. The amount of Cl 3p character was determined to be 9% for 5, and we were unable to make an experimental determination for 4. Using hybrid DFT calculations with relativistic effective core potentials, the electronic structures of 1-5 were calculated and used as a guide to interpret the experimental Cl K-edge XAS data. For transition-metal compounds 1-3, the pre-edge features arise due to transitions from Cl 1s electrons into the 3d-, 4d-, and 5d-orbitals, with assignments provided in the text. For Th, 4, we find that 5f- and 6d-orbitals are nearly degenerate and give rise to a single pre-edge shoulder in the XAS. For U, 5, we find the 5f- and 6d-orbitals fall into two distinct energy groupings, and Cl K-edge XAS data are interpreted in terms of Cl 1s transitions into both 5f- and 6d-orbitals. Time-dependent DFT was used to calculate the energies and intensities of Cl 1s transitions into empty metal-based orbitals containing Cl 3p character and provide simulated Cl K-edge XAS spectra for 1-4. For 5, which has two unpaired 5f electrons, simulated spectra were obtained from transition dipole calculations using ground-state Kohn-Sham orbitals. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first application of Cl K-edge XAS to actinide systems. Overall, this study allows trends in orbital mixing within a well-characterized structural motif to be identified and compared between transition-metals and actinide elements. These results show that the orbital mixing for the d-block compounds slightly decreases in covalency with increasing principal quantum number, in the order Ti > Zr approximately = Hf, and that uranium displays approximately half the covalent orbital mixing of transition elements.

Lanthanide(III) and actinide(III) complexes [M(BH4)2 (THF)5][BPh4] and [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)][BPh4] (M = Nd, Ce, U): synthesis, crystal structure, and density functional theory investigation of the covalent contribution to metal-borohydride bonding. Abstract
Treatment of [M(BH4)3(THF)3] with NEt3HBPh4 in THF afforded the cationic complexes [M(BH4)2(THF)5][BPh4] [M = U (1), Nd (2), Ce (3)] which were transformed into [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)][BPh4] [M = U (4), Nd (5), Ce (6)] in the presence of 18-crown-6; [U(BH4)2(18-thiacrown-6)][BPh4] (7) was obtained from 1 and 18-thiacrown-6 in tetrahydro-thiophene. Compounds 1, 3.C4H8S, 4.THF, 5, and 6.THF exhibit a penta- or hexagonal bipyramidal crystal structure with the two terdentate borohydride ligands in apical positions; the BH4 groups in the crystals of 7.C4H8S are in relative cis positions, and the thiacrown-ether presents a saddle shape, with two diametrically opposite sulfur atoms bound to uranium in trans positions. The crystal structures of these complexes, as well as those of previously reported [M(BH4)2(THF)5]+ cations, do not reveal any clear-cut lanthanide(III)/actinide(III) differentiation. The structural data obtained for [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)]+ (M = U, Ce) by relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations are indicative of a small shortening of the U...B with respect to the Ce...B distance, which is accompanied by a lengthening of the U-Hb bonds and an opening of the Hb-B-Hb angle (Hb = bridging hydrogen atom of the eta3-BH4 ligand). The Mulliken population analysis and the natural bond orbital analysis indicate that the BH4 -->M(III) donation is greater for M = U than for M = Ce, as well as the overlap population of the M-Hb bond, thus showing a better interaction between the uranium 5f orbitals and the Hb atoms. The more covalent character of the B-H-U three-center two-electron bond was confirmed by the molecular orbital (MO) analysis. Three MOs represent the pi bonding interactions between U(III) and the three Hb atoms with significant 6d and 5f orbital contributions. These MOs in the cerium(III) complex exhibit a much lesser metallic weight with practically no participation of the 4f orbitals.
