Functionalized Alkali Metal Cyclopentadienides: Structural and Chemical Features

Synthetic study toward tridachiapyrone B

A convergent approach to the skeleton of tridachiapyrone B is described taking advantage of the desymmetrization of α,α'-dimethoxy-γ-pyrone leading to α-crotyl-α'-methoxy-γ-pyrone in one step. To construct the quaternary carbon of the 2,5-cyclohexadienone of the target, a strategy based on the Robinson-type annulation of an aldehyde derived from α-crotyl-α'-methoxy-γ-pyrone was applied. The grafting of the simplified target's side chain was demonstrated through an oxidative anionic oxy-Cope rearrangement of the tertiary alcohol arising from the 1,2-addition of a 1,3-dimethylallyl reagent to 2,5-cyclohexadienone connected to the α'-methoxy-γ-pyrone motif.

The structural diversity of heterocycle-fused potassium cyclopentadienides

Cyclopentadienides of d- and f-elements are highly important complexes with undoubted potential for practical applications. Annelation of a heterocyclic fragment with an η5-ring results in substantial improvement of the catalytic properties of these compounds, called "heterocenes"; the investigation of metal coordination with these specific ligands is a highly important problem. We prepared potassium derivatives 5-8 of heterocycle-annelated cyclopentadienes with different structures - derivatives of cyclopenta[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene (1), indeno[2,1-b]indole (2), indeno[1,2-b]indole (3), and indeno[1,2-b]indolizine (4) and studied the crystal and molecular structures of these salts by X-ray diffraction. We found that heterocycle-fused cyclopentadienides demonstrate remarkable diversity in metal-ligand coordination modes and crystal packing, with formation of two-dimensional polymeric (5), linear polymeric (6), tetrameric (7) and monomeric (8) structures. The NMR spectral data and results of DFT modeling indicate an increase in electron density in the cyclopentadienyl fragment, and this effect was found to be larger in the derivative of the new indolizine ligand precursor 4. The results of our study will be used in the design of next-generation catalysts of α-olefin polymerization.

LiNTf₂ adds to a zwitterionic fulvalene yielding a η⁵-CpLi complex that is in equilibrium with its lithiocene at −80 °C as revealed by ⁷Li NMR spectroscopy.

Stabilized borata-alkene formation: structural features, reactions and the role of the counter cation

A stable borata-alkene was prepared starting from dimethylbenzofulvene and Piers' borane [HB(C₆F₅)₂]. It undergoes a cycloaddiiton reaction with chalcone.

Synthesis of functionalized fulvenes: [3 + 2] annulation of ethyl α-chlorocyclopropaneformates with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds

An efficient method is reported to produce acidic multi-substituted fulvenes at high yields (up to 94%) through the base-promoted [3 + 2] annulation reaction of ethyl α-chlorocyclopropaneformates with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds.

The potassium hydride mediated trimerization of imines

A novel reaction, the potassium hydride mediated synthesis of fulvenes, is described. The synthesis utilizes N-aryl imines as an inexpensive starting material affording novel substituted aminofulvenes. It is proposed that the presence of the metalated enamine as well as the imine (ratio 2 : 1) leads to the formation of an initial dimerization and a transient trimerization product, which cyclizes, giving rise to the aminofulvene.
