Abstract
The ability of the imine PyCH═N-CH2Py (Py = 2-pyridyl, bpi) to behave as a heteroditopic ligand, which is suitable for creating two separate compartments to host metals in different oxidation states, has been developed by studying the reactions of the mixed-valence complexes [(cod)M-Ι(μ-bpi)MΙ(cod)] (M = Rh, Ir) with [M'(Cl)2(PPh3)2] (M' = Pd, Ni). The results depend on the molar ratio of the reagents used (1:1 or 1:2) to give the heterometallic complexes {d10-M',d8-M}-[(PPh3)(Cl)M'0(μ-bpi)MΙ(cod)] (Pd,Rh, 4; Pd,Ir, 5; Ni,Rh, 8; Ni,Ir, 9) and the two-electron mixed-valent compounds [(PPh3)(Cl)M'0(μ-bpi)M'ΙΙ(Cl)] (M' = Ni, 10; Pd, 11), respectively. A redox process occurs in the replacement of the low-valent [(cod)M-I] fragment, whereas the exchange of the [(cod)MI] fragment is redox-neutral. The metal with a d8 configuration in the products exhibits a square-planar geometry coordinated to two (Rh/Ir) or three (Ni/Pd) nitrogen atoms of the bridging bpi ligand. Conversely, the metal with a d10 configuration adopts trigonal-planar geometries, π-bonded to the imine C═N bond. The isolated complexes 4/5 and 10/11, along with the hypothetical heterometallic Pd,Ni compound (12), were studied by DFT methods. Additionally, the T-shaped moiety 'M'ΙΙ(PPh3)(Cl)(η1-CH-N(bpi))', stabilized by a secondary γ-agostic interaction, and the 'M'II(Cl)(κ3N-bpi)' fragment was found to be accessible redoxomers of complexes 10 and 11 by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Mixed-valence complexes represent an enticing class of coordination compounds to interrogate electron transfer confined within a molecular framework. The diamagnetic heterotrimetallic anion, [V(SNS)2{Ni(dppe)}2]-, was prepared by reducing (dppe)NiCl2 in the presence of the chelating metalloligand [V(SNS)2]- [dppe = bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane; (SNS)3- = bis(2-thiolato-4-methylphenyl)amide]. Vanadium-nickel bonds span the heterotrimetallic core in the structure of [V(SNS)2{Ni(dppe)}2]-, with V-Ni bond lengths of 2.78 and 2.79 Å. One-electron oxidation of monoanionic [V(SNS)2{Ni(dppe)}2]- yielded neutral, paramagnetic V(SNS)2{Ni(dppe)}2. The solid-state structure of V(SNS)2{Ni(dppe)}2 revealed that the two nickel ions occupy unique coordination environments: one nickel is in a square-planar S2P2 coordination environment (τ4 = 0.19), with a long Ni···V distance of 3.45 Å; the other nickel is in a tetrahedral S2P2 coordination environment (τ4 = 0.84) with a short Ni-V distance of 2.60 Å, consistent with a formal metal-metal bond. Continuous-wave X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, electrochemical investigations, and density functional theory computations indicated that the unpaired electron in the neutral V(SNS)2{Ni(dppe)}2 cluster is localized on the bridging [V(SNS)2] metalloligand, and as a result, V(SNS)2{Ni(dppe)}2 is best described as a two-electron mixed-valence complex. These results demonstrate the important role that metal-metal interactions and flexible coordination geometries play in enabling multiple, reversible electron transfer processes in small cluster complexes.

Abstract
A joint experimental/computational effort to elucidate the mechanism of dihydrogen activation by a gold(I)/platinum(0) metal-only frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) is described herein. The drastic effects on H2 activation derived from subtle ligand modifications have also been investigated. The importance of the balance between bimetallic adduct formation and complete frustration has been interrogated, providing for the first time evidence for genuine metal-only FLP reactivity in solution. The origin of a strong inverse kinetic isotopic effect has also been clarified, offering further support for the proposed bimetallic FLP-type cleavage of dihydrogen.

Abstract
The syntheses and reaction chemistry of two electron mixed-valence diphosphazane-bridged dirhodium and diiridium complexes M(2)(0,II)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(2)Cl(2) [M = Rh (1), Ir (2); tfepma = MeN[P(OCH(2)CF(3))(2)](2), CN(t)Bu = tert-butyl isocyanide] are described. 1 and 2 undergo addition and two-electron oxidation and reduction chemistries. In the presence of CN(t)Bu, the addition product with the stoichiometry M(2)(0,II)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(3)Cl(2) [M = Rh (3), Ir (3)] is generated; in the presence of 1 equiv of CN(t)Bu and 2 equiv of bis(pentamethyl-cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(II), 1 and 2 are reduced to furnish M(2)(0,0)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(3) [M = Rh (5), Ir (6)], which feature both four- and five-coordinate M(0) centers. Complexes 1, 2, 5, and 6 all possess coordinatively unsaturated square planar M(0) centers that are reactive: (1) 2 reacts with PhICl(2) to produce Ir(2)(II,II)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(2)Cl(4) (7); (2) protonation of 2 with HX yields Ir(2)(II,II)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(2)Cl(2)HX [X = Cl(-) (8), OTs(-) (9)]; (3) protonation of 5 with HOTs produces [Rh(2)(I,I)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(3)(μ-H)](OTs); and (4) the reversible hydrogenation of 2 proceeds smoothly, furnishing the cis-dihydride complex Ir(2)(II,II)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(2)(H)(2)Cl(2) (11). Substitution of tfepma in 2 with bis(diphenylphsophino)methane (dppm) yields the orthometalated complex Ir(2)(II,II)(dppm)(PPh(o-C(6)H(4))CH(2)PPh(2))(CN(t)Bu)(2)Cl(2)H (12). The X-ray crystal structures of 11 compounds are presented and discussed, and spectroscopic characterization by multinuclear and variable temperature NMR provides details about solution structures and in some cases the formation of isomeric products. The electronic spectra of the new complexes are also described briefly, with absorption and emission features derived from the bimetallic core.

Abstract
The catalytic activity of Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) with different sizes and shapes was investigated in a photocatalytic hydrogen-evolution system composed of the 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium ion (Acr(+)-Mes: photocatalyst) and dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH: electron donor), based on rates of hydrogen evolution and electron transfer from one-electron-reduced species of Acr(+)-Mes (Acr·-Mes) to PtNPs. Cubic PtNPs with a diameter of (6.3±0.6) nm exhibited the maximum catalytic activity. The observed hydrogen-evolution rate was virtually the same as the rate of electron transfer from Acr·-Mes to PtNPs. The rate constant of electron transfer (k(et)) increased linearly with increasing proton concentration. When H(+) was replaced by D(+), the inverse kinetic isotope effect was observed for the electron-transfer rate constant (k(et)(H)/k(et)(D)=0.47). The linear dependence of k(et) on proton concentration together with the observed inverse kinetic isotope effect suggests that proton-coupled electron transfer from Acr·-Mes to PtNPs to form the Pt-H bond is the rate-determining step for catalytic hydrogen evolution. When FeNPs were used instead of PtNPs, hydrogen evolution was also observed, although the hydrogen-evolution efficiency was significantly lower than that of PtNPs because of the much slower electron transfer from Acr·-Mes to FeNPs.

Abstract
Personalized energy (PE) is a transformative idea that provides a new modality for the planet's energy future. By providing solar energy to the individual, an energy supply becomes secure and available to people of both legacy and nonlegacy worlds and minimally contributes to an increase in the anthropogenic level of carbon dioxide. Because PE will be possible only if solar energy is available 24 h a day, 7 days a week, the key enabler for solar PE is an inexpensive storage mechanism. HY (Y = halide or OH(-)) splitting is a fuel-forming reaction of sufficient energy density for large-scale solar storage, but the reaction relies on chemical transformations that are not understood at the most basic science level. Critical among these are multielectron transfers that are proton-coupled and involve the activation of bonds in energy-poor substrates. The chemistry of these three italicized areas is developed, and from this platform, discovery paths leading to new hydrohalic acid- and water-splitting catalysts are delineated. The latter water-splitting catalyst captures many of the functional elements of photosynthesis. In doing so, a highly manufacturable and inexpensive method for solar PE storage has been discovered.
