Abstract
α-Diimine ligands, in particular 1,4-diazabutadiene (dad) and bis(iminoacenaphthene) (bian) derivatives, have been widely used for coordination with various metals, including main-group, transition, and lanthanide and actinide metals. In addition to their tunable steric and electronic properties, the dad and bian ligands are redox-active and can readily accept one or two electrons, converting into the radical-anionic (L˙-) or dianionic (enediamido, L2-) form, respectively. This non-innocence brings about rich electronic structures and properties of the ligands and complexes thereof. For example, the dad ligands in their three redox levels can effectively stabilize a series of metal centers in different oxidation states, including low-valent metals. Moreover, these ligands can serve as electron reservoirs and can participate in reactions toward other molecules with or without metals. Therefore, such ligands are extremely useful in the areas of low-valent complexes and small molecule activation. Herein, we will discuss the use of dad (and bian) ligands in the stabilization of metal-metal-bonded compounds, in particular those of main-group metals, as well as small molecule activation by these (low-valent) metal coordination species where the non-innocence of the ligands plays a key role.

Abstract
Azobenzenyl anion radical complex of magnesium [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(PhNNPh) (THF) (2) was obtained for the first time through the reaction of [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]MgBr (1) with potassium graphite in the presence of azobenzene. Complex 2 is a useful electron-transfer reagent as shown by the reactivity with diphenyl disulfide, diphenyl diselenide, oxygen, sulfur, and Me3SiN3 yielding the magnesium thiolate [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(SPh)(THF) (3), magnesium selenolate [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(SePh)(THF) (4), peroxido complex {[HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(THF)}2(μ-η2-η2-O2) (5), persulfido complex {[HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg(THF)}2(μ-η2-η2-S2) (6), and azido complex [HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]MgN3 (7), respectively. Furthermore, treatment of 2 with Me3SiCHN2 results in a rearrangement product {[HC(C(Me)N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mg[CNN(SiMe3)]}2 (8).

Abstract
Phenyl-bis(imino)pyridine (PhI2P) complexes, (PhI2P)ZnCl2 (1), (PhI2P−)ZnCl (2) and (PhI2P−)Zn(py)Cl (3) were obtained with the I2P ligand in both the neutral and the one-electron reduced state. In all examples, the metal ion is Zn(II). Metrical parameters obtained from solid state structures of 2 and 3 indicate that the PhI2P− ligand exists as a radical which is supported at the carbon atom of the imino donor, and this electronic state is also apparent in the analogous one-electron reduced ligand Al(III) complex, (PhI2P−)AlCl2 (4), that we prepared for comparison. We were unable to obtain PhI2P Mg complexes, and so the more electron rich methyl-substituted bis(imino)pyridine ligand, MeI2P, was investigated. Reaction of two-electron reduced MeI2P with MgCl2 and Mg(OTf)2 did afford the two-electron reduced ligand complexes [(MeI2P2−)Mg(THF)]2(μ-MgCl2) (5) and (MeI2P2−)Mg(THF)2 (6), respectively (MeI2P = 2,6-bis(1-methylethyl)-N-(2-pyridinylmethylene)phenylamine). Complex 5 crystallizes as a trinuclear Mg complex consisting of two (MeI2P2−)Mg moieties bridged by MgCl2 and the (MeI2P2−) ligand is symmetric across the pyridine ring, but is not planar. In contrast, the (MeI2P2−) ligand in 6 is asymmetric across the pyridine ring and all atoms in the ligand are coplanar. Cyclic voltammetry measurements reveal that in complexes, 1, 4, 5, 6, the I2P0, I2P−, and I2P2− ligand charge states are accessible electrochemically.

Abstract
We report here a number of dianionic 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene complexes of titanium and zirconium synthesised by a salt metathesis reaction. The reaction of either CpTiCl3 or Cp2TiCl2 with the dilithium salt of N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene [; abbreviated (Dipp)2DADLi2] afforded the mono-cyclopentadienyl titanium complex [η(5)-CpTi((Dipp)2DAD)Cl] () bearing a dianionic ene-diamide ligand, while the analogous reaction of zirconocene dichloride (Cp2ZrCl2) with the dilithium salt gave the bis-cyclopentadienyl zirconium complex [Cp2Zr{(Dipp)2DAD}] (). The metal dichloride complexes [Ti((Dipp)2DAD)Cl2] () and [{(Dipp)2DADZrCl(μ-Cl)}2(κ(3)-Cl)(Li)(OEt2)2] () were obtained by the reaction of and anhydrous metal tetrachloride in a 1 : 1 molar ratio in diethyl ether at room temperature. Meanwhile, the homoleptic titanium complex [Ti{((Dipp)2DAD)}2] () was isolated in good yield by the treatment of with TiCl4 in a 1 : 2 molar ratio in diethyl ether. The complexes and were further reacted with neosilyl lithium to afford mono- and bis-alkyl complexes of titanium [η(5)-CpTi{(Dipp)2DAD}(CH2SiMe3)] () and zirconium [Zr{(Dipp)2DAD}(CH2SiMe3)2] () respectively. Molecular structures of the complexes , , and in the solid states were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The solid state structures of all the complexes reveal that the metal ions are chelated through the amido-nitrogen atoms and the olefinic carbons of the [(Dipp)2DAD](2-) moiety, satisfying the σ(2),π coordination mode. Compound was used as a catalyst for the intermolecular hydrosilylation reaction of a number of olefins, and moderate activity of catalyst was observed.

Abstract
We report an amidinato ligand-supported series of magnesium complexes obtained from the insertion of a magnesium-carbon bond into a carbon-nitrogen double bond of different carbodiimides and α-diimine ligands. The magnesium complexes [Mg(CH2Ph){CyN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)NCy}]2 (), [Mg(CH2Ph){(i)PrN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)N(i)Pr}]2 () and the homoleptic [Mg{(t)BuN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)N(t)Bu}2] () (Cy = cyclohexyl, (i)Pr = isopropyl, (t)Bu = tert-butyl) were prepared by the reaction of dibenzyl magnesium [Mg(CH2Ph)2(Et2O)2] with the respective carbodiimides either in 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 molar ratio in toluene. The analogous reaction of [Mg(CH2Ph)2(Et2O)2] with the N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (Dipp2DAD) ligand afforded the corresponding homoleptic magnesium complex [Mg{DippN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)CH2NDipp}2] () (Dipp = 2,6 diisopropylphenyl) in good yield. The solid-state structures of magnesium complexes were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It was observed that in each case, a magnesium-carbon bond was inserted into the carbon-nitrogen double bond of either carbodiimides or Dipp2DAD resulting in a monoanionic amido-imino ligand. In a further reaction between and N-aryliminopyrrolyl ligand 2-(2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)C4H3NH (ImpDipp-H) in 1 : 2 molar ratio, a new magnesium complex [Mg(ImpDipp)2{CyN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)NHCy}] (), with one amidinato and two aryliminopyrrolyl ligands in the coordination sphere, was obtained in good yield. In contrast, the homoleptic magnesium complex reacted with one equivalent of N-aryliminopyrrolyl ligand (ImpDipp-H) to produce another mixed ligated magnesium complex [Mg{DippN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)CH2NDipp}(ImpDipp)] (), with a benzylated DAD ligand and aryliminopyrrolyl ligands in the coordination sphere. Further reaction of complex with benzyl alcohol (PhCH2OH) afforded the third mixed ligated magnesium complex [Mg{DippN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)CH2NDipp}(OCH2Ph)2] () in very good yield. The magnesium complexes were characterised using standard analytical/spectroscopic techniques and their solid-state structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
