Aromatic Borataheterocycles: Surrogates for Cyclopentadienyl in Transition-Metal Complexes

Heteroatom-Promoted Polyhexagonal Saddle-Shaped Molecular Structures and their Supramolecular Coassembly with C60

Molecules with curved architecture can exhibit unique optoelectronic properties due to the concave-convex π-surface. However, synthesizing negatively curved saddle-shaped aromatic systems has been challenging due to the internal structural strain. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of two polyhexagonal molecular systems, 1 and 2, with saddle shape geometry by judiciously varying the aromatic moiety, avoiding the harsh synthetic methods as that of heptagonal aromatic saddle systems. The unique geometry preferences of B, N, and S furnish suitable curvature to the molecules, featuring saddle shape. The saddle geometry also enables them to interact with fullerene C60 , and the supramolecular interactions of fullerene C60 with 1 and 2 modify their optoelectronic properties. Crystal structure analysis reveals that 1, with a small π-surface, forms a double columnar array of fullerenes in the solid state. In contrast, 2 with a large π-surface produces a supramolecular capsule entrapping two discrete fullerenes. The intermolecular interactions between B, N, S, and the aryl-π surface of the host and C60 guest are the stabilizing factors for creating these supramolecular structures. Comprehensive computational, optical, and Raman spectroscopic studies establish the charge transfer interactions between B-N doped heterocycle host and fullerene C60 guest.

Charge-compensated nido-carborane derivatives in the synthesis of iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) complexes

A series of stable iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) derivatives [8,8'-(RNHC(Et)HN)2-3,3'-Fe(1,2-C2B9H10)2] (R = Pr, R = Ph, (CH2)2OH, (CH2)3OH, (CH2)2NMe2) was prepared starting from FeCl2 or [FeCl2(dppe)] and the corresponding nido-carboranyl amidines [10-RNHC(Et)HN-7,8-C2B9H11]. In a similar way, the reactions of the oxonium derivatives of nido-carborane with FeCl2 in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of t-BuOK lead to the corresponding stable oxonium derivatives iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) [8,8'-(RR'O)2-3,3'-Fe(1,2-C2B9H10)2] (RR' = (CH2)4, (CH2)2O(CH2)2, (CH2)5; R = R' = Et), which can be alternatively prepared by the reaction of the parent iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) with tetrahydrofuran or 1,4-dioxane in the presence of Me2SO4. The cyclic voltammetry studies of the synthesized iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) derivatives revealed that the introduction of amidinium and oxonium substituents leads to a significant increase in the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox potential relative to the parent iron(II) bis(dicarbollide). The redox potentials of the oxonium derivatives are close to the redox potential of ferrocene and somewhat lower than redox potentials of sulfonium and phosphonium derivatives of iron(II) bis(dicarbollide).

Synthesis, reduction and C-H activation chemistry of azaborinines with redox-active organoboryl substituents

The 2,3,4,5,6-pentaphenyl-1,2-azaborinin-1-yl (PPAB) potassium complex 1 undergoes facile salt metathesis with 9,10-dibromo-9,10-dihydroboraanthracene (DBABr2), 5-bromodibenzo[b,d]borole (DBBBr), 1-chlorotetraphenylborole (TPBCl) and dibromo(phenyl)borane (BBr2Ph) to yield the corresponding N-borylated azaborinines N-DBABr-PPAB (2, which hydrolyses and dimerises to the oxo-bridged N,N'-O(DBA)2-(PPAB)2, 3), N,N'-DBA-(PPAB)2 (4), N-DBB-PPAB (5), N-PPB-PPAB (7) and N-BBrPh-PPBA (9). Stepwise reduction of 4 yields the corresponding stable radical anion 4˙- and dianion 42-. One-electron reduction of 5 with KC8 yields the purple radical anion 5˙-, which forms a highly insoluble coordination polymer. 5˙- undergoes very slow radical intramolecular ortho-C-H activation at the C4-phenyl substituent of the PPAB moiety, yielding a BN-analogue of the 5,5'-spiro-bi[dibenzoborole] anion, [6]K. Compound 7 cannot be isolated and undergoes spontaneous and diastereoselective 2,5-anti-addition of the ortho-C-H bond of the PPAB C4-phenyl substituent to yield a novel BNB-analogue of the triply fused dihydrocyclopenta[l]phenanthrene cation, compound 8. Finally the one-electron reduction of 9 results in the ortho-C-H activation of the PPAB C4-phenyl substituent at an in situ-generated dicoordinate boryl anion (10), resulting in the formation of a BNB-analogue of 9H-fluorene, the borate 11-. DFT calculations provide a rationale for the diverse C-H activations observed in these reactions.

Yttrium Complexes with Group 13 Heterobenzene-Type Ligands

The yttrium gallabenzene complex [(1-Me-3,5-tBu2 -C5 H3 Ga)(μ-Me)Y(2,4-dtbp)] is accessible from Y(GaMe4 )3 and K(2,4-dtbp) via a tandem salt metathesis/methane elimination (2,4-dtbp=2,4-di-tert-butyl-pentadienyl). The pentadienyl ligand in [(1-Me-3,5-tBu2 -C5 H3 E)(μ-Me)Y(2,4-dtbp)] (E=Al, Ga) is easily displaced by salt metathesis with KC5 Me5 and KTpMe,Me (TpMe,Me =tris(pyrazolyl-Me2 -3,5)borato) affording [(1-Me-3,5-tBu2 -C5 H3 E)(μ-Me)Y(TpMe,Me )] and [(1-Me-3,5-tBu2 -C5 H3 E)(μ-Me)Y(C5 Me5 )]. The yttrium center in [(1-Me-3,5-tBu2 -C5 H3 E)(μ-Me)Y(2,4-dtbp)] readily forms adducts with neutral Lewis bases like 4-DMAP (4-dimethylaminopyridine), PMe3 , DMPE (1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane), and DME (1,2-dimethoxyethane). In stark contrast, addition of TMEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) results in methyl/pentadienyl exchange between aluminum and yttrium resulting in [(1-(2,4-dtbp)-1-Me-3,5-tBu2 -C5 H3 Al)Y(Me)(tmeda)]. The bonding features of the newly synthesized complexes are analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and heteronuclear (89 Y, 31 P) NMR spectroscopy.

Coinage metal complexes of BN analogues of m-terphenyl ligands

We report the synthesis of a series of group 11 metal complexes with sterically demanding anionic nitrogen ligands based on the 1,2-azaborinine motif. The ligands, which share structural similarities with m-terphenyls, have been used to stabilize two-coordinate phosphine complexes and dimeric complexes with close contacts between the metal centers. Spectroscopic, crystallographic, and theoretical investigations reveal close parallels to the related m-terphenyl complexes, including metallophilic interactions in the dimers.

Triple-Decker Iron and Cobalt Complexes Featuring a Bridging 1,2-Diboratabenzene Ligand

Neutral triple-decker iron and cobalt complexes with a bridging 1,2-diboratabenzene ligand were accessed by reactions of a dilithium 1,2-diboratabenzene reagent with [Cp*FeCl]₂ and [Cp*CoCl]₂, respectively. While 1,2-diboratabenzene metal complexes are known, these represent the first examples of the ligand bridging two metals.

Dipole moment engineering enables universal B-N-embedded bipolar hosts for OLEDs: an old dog learns a new trick

Here, we carried out a dipole moment engineering to convert a classical BN-PAH framework into a formal acceptor for the construction of bipolar OLED host materials, with this engineering involving the introduction of two "donor wings". The installation of the donors transformed the small local dipole moment of the BN-PAH framework into a large charge-transfer dipole moment, leading to a more separated frontier molecular orbital distribution beneficial for bipolar transport as well as a higher glass-transition temperature beneficial for morphological stability. The assembled donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) triads exhibited promising potential as universal bipolar hosts for the fabrication of OLEDs of various categories with wide color gamuts, such as blue multiple-resonance OLEDs (MR-OLEDs), green thermally activated delayed-fluorescence OLEDs (TADF-OLEDs), yellow TADF-sensitized fluorescence OLEDs (TSF-OLEDs), and red phosphorescence OLEDs (Ph-OLEDs).

The rapid construction of bis-BN dipyrrolyl[a,j]anthracenes and a direct comparison with a carbonaceous analogue

A series of bis-BN dipyrrolyl[a,j]anthracenes and a representative carbonaceous analogue have been synthesized. We studied the optical properties and OLED applications of these BN-PAHs and compared them with the carbonaceous counterpart.

A Benzodiphosphaborolediide

The first example of a diphosphaborolediide, the benzo-fused [C₆ H₄ P₂ BPh]^2- (1^2- ), is prepared from ortho-bis(phosphino)benzene (C₆ H₄ {PH₂ }) and dichlorophenylborane, via a sequential lithiation approach. The dilithio-salt can be obtained as an oligomeric THF solvate or discrete TMEDA adduct, both of which are fully characterized, including by X-ray diffraction. Alongside NICS calculations, data strongly suggest some aromaticity within 1^2- , which is further supported by preliminary coordination studies that demonstrate η⁵ -coordination to a zerovalent molybdenum center, as observed crystallographically for the oligomeric [{Mo(CO)₃ (η⁵ -1)}{μ-η¹ -Mo(CO)₃ (TMEDA)}₂ ] ⋅ [μ-Li(THF)][μ-Li(TMEDA)].

Synthesis, Properties, and Regioselective Functionalization of 9,9a-BN Anthracene

A novel 9,9a-BN anthracene 5 has been synthesized by the Ru-catalyzed electrocyclization of BN-aromatic enynes. The photophysical properties of 5 are different from those of all-carbon anthracene and other reported BN-anthracenes. The reactivity of 5 has been investigated by treating 5 with organolithium compounds, Br₂, or N-iodosuccinimide. The resulting halogenated compounds can be easily functionalized via cross-coupling reactions. UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy of 5 have been investigated to explore the photophysical properties of these BN-anthracenes.

Parent B2 N2 -Perylenes with Different BN Orientations

Introducing BN units into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons expands the chemical space of conjugated materials with novel properties. However, it is challenging to achieve accurate synthesis of BN-PAHs with specific BN positions and orientations. Here, three new parent B₂ N₂ -perylenes with different BN orientations are synthesized with BN-naphthalene as the building block, providing systematic insight into the effects of BN incorporation with different orientations on the structure, (anti)aromaticity, crystal packing and photophysical properties. The intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction shortens the π-π stacking distance. The crystal structure, (anti)aromaticity, and photophysical properties vary with the change of BN orientation. The revealed BN doping effects may provide a guideline for the synthesis of BN-PAHs with specific stacking structures, and the synthetic strategy employed here can be extended toward the synthesis of larger BN-embedded PAHs with adjustable BN patterns.

Heavier element-containing aromatics of [4n+2]-electron systems

While the implication of the aromaticity concept has been dramatically expanded to date since its emergence in 1865, the classical [4n+2]/4n-electron counting protocol still plays an essential role in evaluating the aromatic nature of compounds. Over the last few decades, a variety of heavier heterocycles featuring the formal [4n+2] π-electron arrangements have been developed, which allows for assessing their aromatic nature. In this review, we present recent developments of the [4n+2]-electron systems of heavier heterocycles involving group 13-15 elements. The synthesis, spectroscopic data, structural parameters, computational data, and reactivity are introduced.

From BN-Naphthalenes to Benzoborole Dianions

The synthesis of benzoborole dianions by alkali metal reduction of BN-naphthalene derivatives via a ring-contraction strategy has been developed. Reduction of 1-alkynyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 a in Et₂ O led to the elimination of alkynyllithium with the formation of 1-amino-1-benzoborole trilithium salt 2 a, whereas reduction of 1-phenyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 c in THF yielded 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with the elimination of ArNHLi. The trilithium and dilithium salts 2 a and 2 c have been fully characterized. Treatment of trilithium salt 2 a with Et₃ NHCl led to the selective protonation of the amino lithium to afford the dilithium salt 2 aH, which could be cleanly oxidized to 1-amino-1-benzoborole 3 in an excellent yield. Reaction of 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with MeI yielded the lithium borate 4 c, which is luminescent both in solution and in the solid state.

Formation of amidino-borate derivatives by a multi-component reaction

Cyclohexene reacts with the (Fmes)BH2·SMe2 borane reagent and three molar equivalents of the isonitrile CN-Xyl to give the five membered 1,3-BN heterocyclic product 7 that contains a zwitterionic borata-amidinium moiety and a cyclohexenyl substituent. The analogous five-component coupling between cyclopentene, (Fmes)BH2·SMe2 and CN-Xyl in a 1 : 1 : 3 molar ratio gives the related cyclic amidino-borate derivative 10. The reaction of the (Fmes)BH2 derived frustrated Lewis pair 12, in situ generated or employed as the isolated dimer, reacts with 3 CN-Xyl equivs. at elevated temperature (60 °C) to yield the analogous coupling product 13.

Direct amidation of metallaaromatics: access to N-functionalized osmapentalynes via a 1,5-bromoamidated intermediate

The direct C–H amidation or imidation of metallaaromatics with N-bromoamides or imides has been achieved under mild conditions and leads to the formation of a family of N-functionalized metallapentalyne derivatives. A unique 1,5-bromoamidated species has been identified, and can be viewed as a σ^H-adduct intermediate in a nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The 1,5-addition of both electrophilic and nucleophilic moieties into the metallaaromatic framework demonstrates a novel pathway in contrast to the typical radical process of arene C–H amidation involving N-haloamide reagents.

The direct C–H amidation of metallapentalyne has been achieved under mild conditions in which key 1,5-bromoamidated intermediates was determined.

Introducing the Dihydro-1,3-azaboroles: Convenient Entry by a Three-Component Reaction, Synthetic and Photophysical Application

The (Fmes)BH₂·SMe₂ reagent (7) reacts sequentially with an acetylene and, e.g., xylylisonitrile in a convenient three-component reaction to give a series of unprecedented dihydro-1,3-azaborole derivatives 16. The tolane-derived example 16a was deprotonated and used as a ligand in organometallic chemistry. Compounds 16 served as the starting materials for the straightforward synthesis of various dihydro-1,3-azaborinine derivatives by treatment with an isonitrile. Several diaryldihydro-1,3-azaboroles showed interesting photophysical properties such as aggregation-induced emission and high fluorescence quantum yields.

Alkyne 1,1-Hydroboration to a Reactive Frustrated P/B-H Lewis Pair

The Mes₂ P-C≡C-SiMe₃ alkyne reacts with the borane H₂ B-Fmes by means of a rare 1,1-hydroboration reaction to give an unsaturated C₂ -bridged frustrated P/B-H Lewis pair. Most of its reactions are determined by the presence of the B-H functionality at the FLP function and the activated connecting carbon-carbon double bond. It reduces carbon monoxide to the formyl stage. With nitriles it reacts in an extraordinary way: it undergoes a reaction sequence that eventually results in the formation of a P-substituted dihydro-1,2-azaborole derivative. Several similar examples were found. In one case a P-ylide was isolated that was related to an intermediate of the reaction sequence. It subsequently opened in an alternative way to give an alkenyl borane product.

Synthesis, structure and properties of semi-internally BN-substituted annulated thiophenes

A series of semi-internally BN-substituted annulated thiophenes were synthesized from easily accessible 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes.

BN-Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Oligomers: Synthesis, Aromaticity, and Reactivity

BN-embedded oligomers with different pairs of BN units were synthesized by electrophilic borylation. Up to four pairs of BN units were incorporated in the large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Their geometric, photophysical, electrochemical, and Lewis acidic properties were investigated by X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The B-N bonds show delocalized double-bond characteristics and the conjugation can be extended through the trans-orientated aromatic azaborine units. Calculations reveal the relatively lower aromaticity for the inner azaborine rings in the BN-embedded PAH oligomers. The frontier orbitals of the longer oligomers are delocalized over the inner aromatic rings. Consequently, the inner moieties of the BN-embedded PAH oligomers are more active than the outer parts. This is confirmed by a simple oxidation reaction, which has significant effects on the aromaticity and the intramolecular charge-transfer interactions.

Synthesis of bis-BN-Naphthalene-Fused Oxepins and Their Photoluminescence Including White-Light Emission

A series of novel bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepin derivatives were synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction from brominated 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes and cis-bis(boryl)alkenes. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins feature a planar framework. The electronic and photophysical properties of the novel BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which disclosed the distinct electronic and photophysical properties of the analogous hydrocarbon system. Interestingly, dual-fluorescent emissions were observed upon dissolving N-substituted derivatives 10-14 in dimethyl sulfoxide. Tunable emission colors especially for white-light emissions can be achieved by controlling the ratio of solvents, concentration, or temperature using only a single-molecule compound.

Rapid Construction of Fold-Line-Shaped BN-Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds through Diels-Alder Reaction

The Diels-Alder reaction strategy that can rapidly extend the conjugated backbone was applied to facilely synthesize fold-line, coplanar BN-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from simple small BN compounds. The molecular structures and packing modes of these BN-embedded acenes were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their electronic and photophysical properties were studied by using UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemical cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations. These results demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of this synthetic strategy.

Synthesis, characterization and properties of aryl-fused bis-BN dihydropyrenes

A series of aryl-fused bis-BN dihydropyrenes are synthesized, their photophysical properties are fully investigated by experimental and theoretical calculations.

Transforming benzylideneamine N,C-chelate boron compounds to BN-cycloocta-/cyclohepta-trienes bearing a tetrasubstituted BN unit via photoisomerization

Simple benzylideneamine N,C-chelate boron compounds have been found to undergo clean photoisomerization forming rare 7- and 8-membered heterocycles that contain a tetrasubstituted BN unit.

A DFT study on 1,4-dihydro-1,4-azaborinine annulated linear polyacenes: Absorption spectra, singlet-triplet energy gap, aromaticity, and HOMO-LUMO energy modulation

Linear polyacene (LPA) mimics containing multiple heterocycles have been computationally designed by annulating 1,4-dihydro-1,4-azaborinine moieties to benzene (aB₁ -aB₅ ), naphthalene (aN₁ -aN₅ ), anthracene (aA₁ -aA₅ ), and tetracene (aT₁ -aT₅ ) cores. DFT studies conducted on them using M06L/6-311++G(d,p) method reveal a perfect planar structure for all and suggest the utilization of nitrogen lone pairs for aromatic π-electron delocalization. The computed values of aromaticity indices such as HOMA, NICS, and dehydrogenation energy (E_dh ) of heterocycles support strong aromatic character for each six-membered ring in the LPA mimics. On the basis of the minimum value of the molecular electrostatic potential (V_min ) observed on each LPA unit in the LPA mimics, the extended delocalization of π-electrons is verified. The energetic parameter E_dh showed strong linear correlation with HOMA, NICS and V_min parameters, which strongly supports the multidimensional character of aromaticity in LPA mimics. The electronic property modification is shown by the theoretical absorption spectra data and singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_ST ). The bandgap and ΔE_ST tunings are achieved for LPA mimics by selecting appropriate number of azaborinine type units and the size of LPA core used for annulation. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Site-Selective and Stereoselective trans-Hydroboration of 1,3-Enynes Catalyzed by 1,4-Azaborine-Based Phosphine-Pd Complex

A concise synthesis of monobenzofused 1,4-azaborine phosphine ligands (Senphos) is described. These Senphos ligands uniquely support Pd-catalyzed trans-selective hydroboration of terminal and internal 1,3-enynes to furnish corresponding dienylboronates in high efficiency and diastereoselectivity. X-ray structural analysis of the Senphos-Pd(0) complex reveals a κ²-P-η²-BC coordination mode, and this isolated complex has been shown to serve as a competent catalyst for the trans-hydroboration reaction. This work demonstrates that the expanded chemical space provided by the BN/CC isosterism approach translates into the functional space in the context of stereoselective catalytic transformations.

The synthesis of BN-embedded tetraphenes and their photophysical properties

A series of intensely blue fluorescent BN-embedded tetraphene derivatives have been synthesized by the catalytic cyclization of BN-naphthalenes with alkynes.
