Multifaceted Chemistry of [(Cymene)RuCl2]2 and PCy3

Metal-Halide Covalency, Exchange Coupling, and Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Triangular (CpiPr5)3U3X6 (X = Cl, Br, I) Clusters

The actinide elements are attractive alternatives to transition metals or lanthanides for the design of exchange-coupled multinuclear single-molecule magnets. However, the synthesis of such compounds is challenging, as is unraveling any contributions from exchange coupling to the overall magnetism. To date, only a few actinide compounds have been shown to exhibit exchange coupling and single-molecule magnetism. Here, we report triangular uranium(III) clusters of the type (CpiPr5)3U3X (1-X; X = Cl, Br, I; CpiPr5 = pentaisopropylcyclopentadienyl), which are synthesized via reaction of the aryloxide-bridged precursor (CpiPr5)2U2(OPhtBu)4 with excess Me3SiX. Spectroscopic analysis suggests the presence of covalency in the uranium-halide interactions arising from 5f orbital participation in bonding. The dc magnetic susceptibility data reveal the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the uranium(III) centers in these compounds, with the strength of the exchange decreasing down the halide series. Ac magnetic susceptibility data further reveal all compounds to exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under zero dc field. In 1-I, which exhibits particularly weak exchange, magnetic relaxation occurs via a Raman mechanism associated with the individual uranium(III) centers. In contrast, for 1-Br and 1-Cl, magnetic relaxation occurs via an Orbach mechanism, likely involving relaxation between ground and excited exchange-coupled states. Significantly, in the case of 1-Cl, magnetic relaxation is sufficiently slow such that open magnetic hysteresis is observed up to 2.75 K, and the compound exhibits a 100-s blocking temperature of 2.4 K. This compound provides the first example of magnetic blocking in a compound containing only actinide-based ions, as well as the first example involving the uranium(III) oxidation state.

Fluorotrithiophosphate Abstraction from the Difluoropentathiodiphosphate Dianion: d8 and d6 Complexes of [η2-S3PF]2

Coordinative heterolysis of the difluoropentathiodiphosphate dianion [S₅P₂F₂]^2- results in the formal elimination of [S₂PF] by complexes of the group 10 divalent metals nickel, palladium, and platinum. The remaining fragment of this cleavage, [S₃PF]^2- coordinates as an η²-ligand. Several complexes with this novel fluorotrithiophosphate were characterized structurally and spectroscopically with X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and ³¹P and ¹⁹F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). In addition to mononuclear η² chelate complexes, bridging complexes with η²-μ₂-S₃PF configurations result in binuclear nickel and ruthenium adducts. Facile methylation with methyl triflate of the uncoordinated sulfur atom leads to a complex with the methylthiofluorodithiophosphate ligand in a cationic complex, which hydrolyses with loss of fluoride to give complexed [S₂P(O)SMe]^2-. Alternatively hydrolysis can also lead to a binuclear Ni₂(dppe)₂(S₃PF)(S₂POF) complex. Divalent ruthenium π-aryl's form fluorotrithiophosphate complexes rapidly at room temperature to give bridged dimers with complete chloride substitution.

An Anionic Dinuclear Ruthenium Dihydrogen Complex of Relevance for Alkyne gem-Hydrogenation

During an investigation into the fate of ruthenium precatalysts used for light-driven alkyne gem-hydrogenation reactions with formation of Grubbs-type ruthenium catalysts, it was found that the reaction of [(IPr)(η6 -cymene)RuCl2 ] with H2 under UV-irradiation affords an anionic dinuclear σ-dihydrogen complex, which is thermally surprisingly robust. Not only are anionic σ-complexes in general exceedingly rare, but the newly formed species seems to be the first example lacking any structural attributes able to counterbalance the negative charge and, in so doing, prevent oxidative insertion of the metal centers into the ligated H2 from occurring.

Experimental insights into catalytic oxidation of 1,6-hexanediol to ε-caprolactone over (p-cymene)RuCl2(L) complexes in non-polar media

The activity-pocket site dimension (θc) dependence of (p-cymene)RuCl2(L) supports associative interchange mechanism for 1,6-hexandiol oxidation to ε-caprolactone. Methyl isobutyl carbinol, a H-accepting product, reacts with Ru, causing deactivation.

Decomposition of Ruthenium Olefin Metathesis Catalyst

Ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts are one of the most commonly used class of catalysts. There are multiple reviews on their uses in various branches of chemistry and other sciences but a detailed review of their decomposition is missing, despite a large number of recent and important advances in this field. In particular, in the last five years several new mechanism of decomposition, both olefin-driven as well as induced by external agents, have been suggested and used to explain differences in the decomposition rates and the metathesis activities of both standard, N-heterocyclic carbene-based systems and the recently developed cyclic alkyl amino carbene-containing complexes. Here we present a review which explores the last 30 years of the decomposition studied on ruthenium olefin metathesis catalyst driven by both intrinsic features of such catalysts as well as external chemicals.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Reductive Cleavage of Unstrained Aryl-Aryl Bonds: Reaction Development and Mechanistic Study

Cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds has been found in some important industrial processes, for example, petroleum cracking, and has inspired development of numerous synthetic methods. However, nonpolar unstrained C(aryl)-C(aryl) bonds remain one of the toughest bonds to be activated. As a detailed study of a fundamental reaction mode, here a full story is described about our development of a Ru-catalyzed reductive cleavage of unstrained C(aryl)-C(aryl) bonds. A wide range of biaryl compounds that contain directing groups (DGs) at 2,2' positions can serve as effective substrates. Various heterocycles, such as pyridine, quinoline, pyrimidine, and pyrazole, can be employed as DGs. Besides hydrogen gas, other reagents, such as Hantzsch ester, silanes, and alcohols, can be employed as terminal reductants. The reaction is pH neutral and free of oxidants; thus a number of functional groups are tolerated. Notably, a one-pot C-C activation/C-C coupling has been realized. Computational and experimental mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction involves a ruthenium(II) monohydride-mediated C(aryl)-C(aryl) activation and the resting state of the catalyst is a η4-coordinated ruthenium(II) dichloride complex, which could inspire development of other transformations based on this reaction mode.

Five-Membered Ruthenacycles: Ligand-Assisted Alkyne Insertion into 1,3-N,S-Chelated Ruthenium Borate Species

Building upon previous work, the chemistry of [(η⁶ -p-cymene)Ru{P(OMe)₂ OR}Cl₂ ], (R=H or Me) has been extended with [H₂ B(mbz)₂ ]^- (mbz=2-mercaptobenzothiazolyl) using different Ru precursors and borate ligands. As a result, a series of 1,3-N,S-chelated ruthenium borate complexes, for example, [(κ² -N,S-L)PR₃ Ru{κ³ -H,S,S'-H₂ B(L)₂ }], (2 a-d and 2 a'-d'; R=Ph, Cy, OMe or OPh and L=C₅ H₄ NS or C₇ H₄ NS₂ ) and [Ru{κ³ -H,S,S'-H₂ B(L)₂ }₂ ], (3: L=C₅ H₄ NS, 3': L=C₇ H₄ NS₂ ) were isolated upon treatment of [(η⁶ -p-cymene)RuCl₂ PR₃ ], 1 a-d (R=Ph, Cy, OMe or OPh) with [H₂ B(mp)₂ ]^- or [H₂ B(mbz)₂ ]^- ligands (mp=2-mercaptopyridyl). All the Ru borate complexes, 2 a-d and 2 a'-d' are stabilized by phosphine/phosphite and hemilabile N,S-chelating ligands. Treatment of these Ru borate species, 2 a'-c' with various terminal alkynes yielded two different types of five-membered ruthenacycle species, namely [PR₃ {C₇ H₄ S₂ -(E)-N-C=CH(R')}Ru{κ³ -H,S,S'-H₂ B(L)₂ }], (4-4'; R=Ph and R'=CO₂ Me or C₆ H₄ NO₂ ; L=C₇ H₄ NS₂ ) and [PR₃ {C₇ H₄ NS-(E)-S-C=CH(R')}Ru{κ³ -H,S,S'-H₂ B(L)₂ }], (5-5', 6 and 7; R=Ph, Cy or OMe and R'=CO₂ Me or C₆ H₄ NO₂ ; L=C₇ H₄ NS₂ ). All these five-membered ruthenacycle species contain an exocyclic C=C moiety, presumably formed by the insertion of a terminal alkyne into the Ru-N and Ru-S bonds. The new species have been characterized spectroscopically and the structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Theoretical studies and chemical-bonding analyses established that charge transfer occurs from phosphorus to ruthenium center following the trend PCy₃ <PPh₃ <P(OPh)₃ <P(OMe)₃ .

Additive-Free Isomerization of Allylic Alcohols to Ketones with a Cobalt PNP Pincer Catalyst

Catalytic isomerization of allylic alcohols in ethanol as a green solvent was achieved by using air and moisture stable cobalt (II) complexes in the absence of any additives. Under mild conditions, the cobalt PNP pincer complex substituted with phenyl groups on the phosphorus atoms appeared to be the most active. High rates were obtained at 120 °C, even though the addition of one equivalent of base increases the speed of the reaction drastically. Although some evidence was obtained supporting a dehydrogenation-hydrogenation mechanism, it was proven that this is not the major mechanism. Instead, the cobalt hydride complex formed by dehydrogenation of ethanol is capable of double-bond isomerization through alkene insertion-elimination.

Reactivation of a Ruthenium-Based Olefin Metathesis Catalyst

1(st) Generation Hoveyda-Grubbs olefin metathesis catalyst was purposely decomposed in the presence of ethylene yielding inorganic species that are inactive in the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of benchmark substrate diethyldiallyl malonate (DEDAM). The decomposed catalyst was treated with 1-(3,5-diisopropoxyphenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-yn-1-ol (3) to generate an olefin metathesis active ruthenium indenylidene-ether complex in 43 % yield. This complex was also prepared independently by reacting RuCl(2)(p-cymene)(PCy(3)) with organic precursor 3. The activity of the isolated reactivated catalyst in the RCM of DEDAM is similar to that of the independently prepared complex.

Phenyl substituted indenylphosphine ruthenium complexes as catalysts for dehydrogenation of alcohols

Thermal treatment of (1H-inden-3-yl)dicyclohexylphosphinium tetrafluoroborate (1) and (3-mesityl-1H-inden-3-yl)dicyclohexylphosphinium tetrafluoroborate (3) with tBuONa followed by [(η(6)-cymene)RuCl(2))](2) in methanol gave the adduct {(η(6)-cymene)RuCl(2)[(1H-inden-3-yl)PCy(2)]} (6) and {(η(6)-cymene)RuCl(2)[(3-mesityl-1H-inden-3-yl)PCy(2)]} (7), respectively. Thermal treatment of (2-phenyl-1H-inden-3-yl)dicyclohexylphosphinium tetrafluoroborate (4) with tBuONa followed by [(η(6)-cymene)RuCl(2))](2) or RuCl(3)·3H(2)O in methanol gave {Ru[κ(P):(η(6)-2-phenyl-1H-inden-3-yl)PCy(2)]Cl(2)} (8). Whereas (2-mesityl-1H-inden-3-yl)dicyclohexylphosphine (5) reacted with [(η(6)-cymene)RuCl(2))](2) (in toluene) or RuCl(3)·3H(2)O (in ethanol) to afford {Ru[κ(P):(η(6)-2-mesityl-1H-inden-3-yl)PCy(2)]Cl(2)} (9). The molecular structures of complexes 6, 8 and 9 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, complexes 8 and 9 have been found to catalyze the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols in toluene. 9 displayed high activity and different substrates, including cyclic and linear alcohols, were efficiently oxidized to ketones by using 2.0 mol% of catalyst.

Amide synthesis from alcohols and amines catalyzed by ruthenium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes

The direct synthesis of amides from alcohols and amines is described with the simultaneous liberation of dihydrogen. The reaction does not require any stoichiometric additives or hydrogen acceptors and is catalyzed by ruthenium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes. Three different catalyst systems are presented that all employ 1,3-diisopropylimidazol-2-ylidene (IiPr) as the carbene ligand. In addition, potassium tert-butoxide and a tricycloalkylphosphine are required for the amidation to proceed. In the first system, the active catalyst is generated in situ from [RuCl(2)(cod)] (cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene), 1,3-diisopropylimidazolium chloride, tricyclopentylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate, and base. The second system uses the complex [RuCl(2)(IiPr)(p-cymene)] together with tricyclohexylphosphine and base, whereas the third system employs the Hoveyda-Grubbs 1st-generation metathesis catalyst together with 1,3-diisopropylimidazolium chloride and base. A range of different primary alcohols and amines have been coupled in the presence of the three catalyst systems to afford the corresponding amides in moderate to excellent yields. The best results are obtained with sterically unhindered alcohols and amines. The three catalyst systems do not show any significant differences in reactivity, which indicates that the same catalytically active species is operating. The reaction is believed to proceed by initial dehydrogenation of the primary alcohol to the aldehyde that stays coordinated to ruthenium and is not released into the reaction mixture. Addition of the amine forms the hemiaminal that undergoes dehydrogenation to the amide. A catalytic cycle is proposed with the {(IiPr)Ru(II)} species as the catalytically active components.

The impact of ion pair association upon the 1H NMR spectra of cationic complexes akin to Grubbs catalysts

A reconsideration of the (1)H NMR spectra of cationic transition metal complexes exhibiting the features of cyclophanes on the basis of Mislow's classification of topic groups arrives at the conclusion that the spectral changes triggered by chiral counterions reflect an intracationic diastereotopication of enantiotopic protons rather than the existence of pairs of long-lived diastereomeric ion pairs.
