π Back-Bonding in Dibenzyl-β-diketiminato Copper Olefin Complexes

Steric and electronic influence on Cu-Cu short contacts in β-thioketiminato tricopper(I) clusters

A series of β-thioketiminate copper(I) complex trimers [LCuI]3 were synthesized by modifying the ligand framework with electron-withdrawing groups (F and Cl) or electron-donating groups (iPr and Me) at the N-aryl ring as well as with CF3 groups on the chelating backbone. This ligand modification significantly impacts the enhancement of Cu⋯Cu short contacts, which can be rationalized by using steric and electronic factors of the chelated ligand. We observed that this intramolecular cuprophilicity among [LCuI]3 complexes is primarily governed by the size of N-aryl ortho-substituents. These findings were well supported by X-ray crystallography, Raman spectroscopy, and Mayer bond order analysis. The electronic effects induced by the ligand modification on the LCuI fragment were investigated using CO and 2,4,6-CNC6H2Me3 as probe molecules. Corroborated by the FTIR and CV measurements, our results reveal that the β-thioketiminate SN chelators induce more pronounced changes in the electronic character of the LCuI fragment due to the presence of CF3 groups on the chelating backbone in comparison with the F or Cl substituents on the N-aryl ring.

Postsynthetic Modification of Amine-Functionalized MIL-101(Cr) Metal-Organic Frameworks with an EDTA-Zn(II) Complex as an Effective Heterogeneous Catalyst for Hantzsch Synthesis of Polyhydroquinolines

The present work aims at preparing the EDTA-Zn(II) complex-supported on the amine-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) MOF-as a new and effective heterogenized catalyst. The optimization of the hydrothermal process shows that 120 °C is the best condition to grow the MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 MOF crystals. Moreover, regarding the use of the postsynthetic modification (PSM) method, hexadentate EDTA was grafted on this support via a simple aminolysis process before further coordinating it with Zn ions to create the corresponding Zn(II) catalytic complex. The catalytic activity of this compound was then investigated in the context of a one-pot synthesis of polyhydroquinolines. This approach has a number of advantages including the following: the use of a solvent that is not hazardous, applying a porous catalyst that is inexpensive, secure, and recyclable; rapid reaction times, high levels of efficiency, and the simplicity of MOF catalyst separation. Accordingly, the process in question can be given the label of "green chemistry".

Understanding Copper(I)-Ethylene Bonding Using Cu K-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Copper plays many important roles in ethylene chemistry, thus generating significant interest in understanding the structures, bonding, and properties of copper(I)-ethylene complexes. In this work, the ethylene binding characteristics of a series of isolable Cu(I)-ethylene compounds supported by a systematic set of fluorinated and nonfluorinated bis- and tris(pyrazolyl)borate and the related bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligands have been investigated. Through a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations, we characterize their geometric and electronic structures and the role that fluorinated ligands play in lowering the electron density at Cu sites. Such ligands increase the ethylene-to-Cu σ-donor interaction and, correspondingly, decrease the Cu-to-ethylene π back-bonding. This latter interaction leads to a partial vacancy in the Cu 3d level, which manifests experimentally as a low-energy feature in the Cu K pre-edge, allowing for its direct observation and comparison within a series of Cu(I) compounds. The pre-edge feature is reproduced by TD-DFT calculations, and its energy position and total intensity are used to quantitatively probe Cu-ethylene bonding. The variations in the Cu electronic structure influence the stability and overall ethylene bonding strength of these compounds, ultimately showing how substituents on the supporting ligands have a notable effect on their physical and chemical properties.

Binding Interactions in Copper, Silver and Gold π-Complexes

The copper(I), silver(I), and gold(I) metals bind π‐ligands by σ‐bonding and π‐back bonding interactions. These interactions were investigated using bidentate ancillary ligands with electron donating and withdrawing substituents. The π‐ligands span from ethylene to larger terminal and internal alkenes and alkynes. Results of X‐ray crystallography, NMR, and IR spectroscopy and gas phase experiments show that the binding energies increase in the order Ag<Cu<Au and the binding energies are slightly higher for alkynes than for alkenes. Modulation of the electron density at the metal using substituents on the ancillary ligands shows that the π‐back bonding interaction plays a dominant role for the binding in the copper and gold complexes.

When SF5 outplays CF3: effects of pentafluorosulfanyl decorated scorpionates on copper

Polyfluorinated, electron-withdrawing, and sterically demanding supporting ligands are of significant value in chemistry. Here we report the assembly and use of a bis(pyrazolyl)borate, [Ph2B(3-(SF5)Pz)2]- that combines all such features, and involves underutilized pentafluorosulfanyl substituents. The ethylene and carbonyl chemistry of copper(i) supported by [Ph2B(3-(SF5)Pz)2]-, a comparison to the trifluoromethylated counterparts involving [Ph2B(3-(CF3)Pz)2]-, as well as copper catalyzed cyclopropanation of styrene with ethyl diazoacetate and CF3CHN2 are presented. The results from cyclopropanation show that SF5 groups dramatically improved the yields and stereoselectivity compared to the CF3.

Copper(I) and silver(I) chemistry of vinyltrifluoroborate supported by a bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligand

Although unsaturated organotrifluoroborates are common synthons in metal-organic chemistry, their transition metal complexes have received little attention. [CH2(3,5-(CH3)2Pz)2]Cu(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3), (SIPr)Cu(MeCN)(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3) and [CH2(3,5-(CH3)2Pz)2]Ag(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3) represent rare, isolable molecules featuring a vinyltrifluoroborate ligand on coinage metals. The X-ray crystal structures show the presence of three-coordinate metal sites in these complexes. The vinyltrifluoroborate group binds asymmetrically to the metal site in [CH2(3,5-(CH3)2Pz)2]M(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3) (M = Cu, Ag) with relatively closer M-C(H)2 distances. The computed structures of [CH2(3,5-(CH3)2Pz)2]M(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3) and M(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3), however, have shorter M-C(H)BF3 distances than M-C(H)2. These molecules feature various inter- or intra-molecular contacts involving fluorine of the BF3 group, possibly affecting these M-C distances. The binding energies of [CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3]- to Cu+, Ag+ and Au+ have been calculated at the wB97XD/def2-TZVP level of theory, in the presence and absence of the supporting ligand CH2(3,5-(CH3)2Pz)2. The calculation shows that Au+ has the strongest binding to the [CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3]- ligand, followed by Cu+ and Ag+, irrespective of the presence of the supporting ligand. However, in all three metals, the supporting ligand weakens the binding of olefin to the metal. The same trends were also found from the analysis of the σ-donation and π-backbonding interactions between the metal fragment and the π and π* orbitals of [CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBF3]-.

Isolable Copper(I) η2-Cyclopropene Complexes

Treatment of bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand supported [(CF₃)₂Bp]Cu(NCMe) with 1,2,3-trisubstituted cyclopropenes produced thermally stable copper(I) η²-cyclopropene complexes amenable to detailed solution and solid-state analysis. The [(CF₃)₂Bp]Cu(NCMe) also catalyzed [2 + 1]-cycloaddition chemistry of terminal and internal alkynes with ethyl diazoacetate affording cyclopropenes, including those used as ligands in this work. The tris(pyrazolyl)borate [(CF₃)₂Tp]Cu(NCMe) is a competent catalyst for this process as well. The treatment of [(CF₃)₂Tp]Cu with ethyl 2,3-diethylcycloprop-2-enecarboxylate substrate gave an O-bonded rather than a η²-cyclopropene copper complex.

Isolable 1-Butene Copper(I) Complexes and 1-Butene/Butane Separation Using Structurally Adaptable Copper Pyrazolates

Non-porous small molecule adsorbents such as {[3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu}₃ (where Pz=pyrazolate) are an emerging class of materials that display attractive features for ethene-ethane separation. This work examines the chemistry of fluorinated copper(I) pyrazolates {[3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu}₃ and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu}₃ with much larger 1-butene in both solution and solid state, and reports the isolation of rare 1-butene complexes of copper(I), {[3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu(H₂ C=CHC₂ H₅ )}₂ and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu(H₂ C=CHC₂ H₅ )}₂ and their structural, spectroscopic, and computational data. The copper-butene adduct formation in solution involves olefin-induced structural transformation of trinuclear copper(I) pyrazolates to dinuclear mixed-ligand systems. Remarkably, larger 1-butene is able to penetrate the dense solid material and to coordinate with copper(I) ions at high molar occupancy. A comparison to analogous ethene and propene complexes of copper(I) is also provided.

Overcoming Fundamental Limitations in Adsorbent Design: Alkene Adsorption by Non-porous Copper(I) Complexes

Purifying alkenes from alkanes requires cryogenic distillation. This consumes energy equivalent to countries of ca. 5 million people. Replacing distillation with adsorption processes would significantly increase energy efficiency. Trade-offs between kinetics, selectivity, capacity, and heat of adsorption have prevented production of an optimal adsorbent. We report adsorbents that overcome these trade-offs. [Cu-Br]₃ and [Cu-H]₃ are air-stable trinuclear complexes that undergo reversible solid-state inter-molecular rearrangements to produce dinuclear [Cu-Br⋅(alkene)]₂ and [Cu-H⋅(alkene)]₂ . The reversible solid-state rearrangement, confirmed in situ using powder X-ray diffraction, allows adsorbent design trade-offs to be overcome, coupling low heat of adsorption (-10 to -17 kJ mol^-1 _alkene ), high alkene:alkane selectivity (47; 29), and uptake capacity (>2.5 mol_alkene  mol^-1 _Cu3 ). Most remarkably, [Cu-H]₃ displays fast uptake and regenerates capacity within 10 minutes.

Isomerism and dynamic behavior of bridging phosphaalkynes bound to a dicopper complex

A dicopper complex featuring a symmetrically bridging nitrile ligand and supported by a binucleating naphthyridine-based ligand, [Cu₂(μ-η ¹ :η ¹ -MeCN)DPFN](NTf₂)₂, was treated with phosphaalkynes (RC[triple bond, length as m-dash]P, isoelectronic analogues of nitriles) to yield dicopper complexes that exhibit phosphaalkynes in rare μ-η ²:η ² binding coordination modes. X-ray crystallography revealed that these unusual "tilted" structures exist in two isomeric forms (R "up" vs. R "sideways"), depending on the steric profile of the phosphaalkyne's alkyl group (R = Me, Ad, or ^t Bu). Only one isomer is observed in both solution and the solid state for R = Me (sideways) and ^t Bu (up). With intermediate steric bulk (R = Ad), the energy difference between the two geometries is small enough that both are observed in solution, and NMR spectroscopy and computations indicate that the solid-state structure corresponds to the minor isomer observed in solution. Meanwhile, treatment of [Cu₂(μ-η ¹:η ¹-MeCN)DPFN](NTf₂)₂ with 2-butyne affords [Cu₂(μ-η ²:η ²-(MeC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CMe))DPFN](NTf₂)₂: its similar ligand geometry demonstrates that the tilted μ-η ²:η ² binding mode is not limited to phosphaalkynes but reflects a more general trend, which can be rationalized via an NBO analysis showing maximization of π-backbonding.

Versatile reactivities of rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes supported by a neutral pyrrolyl-functionalized β-diketiminato ligand

The first unprecedented examples of S-β-diketiminato species were disclosed in the reactions of rare-earth dialkyl complexes with S₈.

Monomeric 16-Electron π-Diborene Complexes of Zn(II) and Cd(II)

Despite the prevalence of stable π-complexes of most d¹⁰ metals, such as Cu(I) and Ni(0), with ethylene and other olefins, complexation of d¹⁰ Zn(II) to simple olefins is too weak to form isolable complexes due to the metal ion's limited capacity for π-backdonation. By employing more strongly donating π-ligands, namely neutral diborenes with a high-lying π(B═B) orbital, monomeric 16-electron M(II)-diborene (M = Zn, Cd) π-complexes were synthesized in good yields. Metal-B₂ π-interactions in both the solid and solution state were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analyses and their solution NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, respectively. The M(II) centers adopt a trigonal planar geometry and interact almost symmetrically with both boron atoms. The MB₂ planes significantly twist out of the MX₂ planes about the M-centroid(B-B) vector, with angles ranging from 47.0° to 85.5°, depending on the steric interactions between the diborene ligand and the MX₂ fragment.

Reactivity Study of Unsymmetrical β-Diketiminato Copper(I) Complexes: Effect of the Chelating Ring

β-Diketiminato copper(I) complexes play important roles in bioinspired catalytic chemistry and in applications to the materials industry. However, it has been observed that these complexes are very susceptible to disproportionation. Coordinating solvents or Lewis bases are typically used to prevent disproportionation and to block the coordination sites of the copper(I) center from further decomposition. Here, we incorporate this coordination protection directly into the molecule in order to increase the stability and reactivity of these complexes and to discover new copper(I) binding motifs. Here we describe the synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of a series of unsymmetrical N-aryl-N'-alkylpyridyl β-diketiminato copper(I) complexes and discuss the structures and reactivity of these complexes with respect to the length of the pyridyl arm. All of the aforementioned unsymmetrical ß-diketiminato copper(I) complexes bind CO reversibly and are stable to disproportionation. The binding ability of CO and the rate of pyridyl ligand decoordination of these copper(I) complexes are directly related to the competition between the degree of puckering of the chelate system and the steric demands of the N-aryl substituent.

Binuclear β-diketiminate complexes of copper(i)

The reaction of a series of dinucleating bis(β-diketiminate) pro-ligands with mesitylcopper in the presence and absence of mono and diphosphines has allowed the isolation of a new series of dicopper(i) complexes.

Catalytic Enantioselective Conjugate Additions of (pin)B-Substituted Allylcopper Compounds Generated in situ from Butadiene or Isoprene

Multicomponent catalytic enantioselective transformations that entail the combination of butadiene or isoprene (common feedstock), an enoate (prepared in one step) and B2 (pin)2 (commercially available) are presented. These processes constitute an uncommon instance of conjugate addition of an allyl moiety and afford the desired products in up to 83 % yield and 98:2 enantiomeric ratio. Based on DFT calculations stereochemical models and rationale for the observed profiles in selectivity are provided.

A computational study of the effects of ancillary ligands on copper(i)–ethylene interaction

Structural and electronic calculations on a ligand database are used to quantify the influence of the ancillary ligands and coordination mode on the electronic structure of Cu(i) ethylene complexes.

Synthesis, Structural Characterisation, and Spectroscopic Properties of Copper(I) Complexes and their Applications to Dye-Sensitised Solar Cells

Based on the ligand 1,4-bis(2-(diphenylphophino)benzylideneamino)benzene (pbb), two complexes, [Cu2(pbb)(2,2′-bipyridine)2](BF4)2 (1) and [Cu2(pbb)(phen)2](BF4)2 (2), have been prepared and characterised by IR, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, 19F NMR, and 11B NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystal structure analysis. Structural analysis reveals that complexes 1 and 2 contain 1D infinite chains and 2D supramolecular networks constructed by C–H···π and π···π interactions, and an ordered-layer-lattice of BF4– is located between these 2D networks. The results show that C–H···π and π···π interactions play an important role in the formation of 2D supramolecular networks. The UV-vis absorption peaks of complexes 1 and 2 display intraligand charge transfer and metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption. Complexes 1 and 2 display efficient luminescent emission assigned to MLCT excited states, and the maximum emissions of these complexes in acetonitrile solution are different from those of the solid-state samples. In addition, complexes 1 and 2 have been exploited as sensitisers in dye-sensitised solar cells, and efficiencies are also observed.

Lactide polymerization catalyzed by Mg and Zn diketiminate complexes with flexible ligand frameworks

Diketimine ligands bearing N-benzyl, N-9-anthrylmethyl and N-mesitylmethyl substituents (nacnac(Bn)H, nacnac(An)H, and nacnac(Mes)H) were prepared from condensation of the amine with either acetyl acetone or its ethylene glycol monoketal. Chlorination with N-chlorosuccinimide in the 3-position yielded Clnacnac(Bn)H and Clnacnac(An)H. The ligands were reacted with Zn(TMSA)2 (TMSA = N(SiMe3)2) to yield nacnac(An)Zn(TMSA) and Clnacnac(Bn)Zn(TMSA). Protonation with isopropanol afforded nacnac(An)ZnOiPr and Clnacnac(Bn)ZnOiPr. Reaction of the diketimines with Mg(TMSA)2 afforded nacnac(An)Mg(TMSA), nacnac(Mes)Mg(TMSA), Clnacnac(Bn)Mg(TMSA) and Clnacnac(An)Mg(TMSA). Subsequent protonation with tert-butanol produced nacnac(Mes)MgOtBu and Clnacnac(Bn)MgOtBu, but only decomposition was observed with N-anthrylmethyl substituents. Most complexes were characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. TMSA complexes were monomeric and alkoxide complexes dimeric in the solid state. All alkoxide complexes, as well as nacnac(An)Mg(TMSA)/BnOH and Clnacnac(An)Mg(TMSA)/BnOH were moderately to highly active in rac-lactide polymerization (90% conversion in 30 s to 3 h). nacnac(An)ZnOiPr produced highly heterotactic polymers (P(r) = 0.90), Clnacnac(Bn)MgOtBu/BnOH produced slightly isotactic polymers at -30 °C (P(r) = 0.43), and all other catalysts produced atactic polymers with a slight heterotactic bias.

Well-controlled ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters initiated by dialkylaluminum β-diketiminates

A series of aluminum alkyl complexes nacnacRAlMe2 (2a-2h) bearing aliphatic N-substituted β-diketiminate ligands (nacnacRH = N,N'-dialkyl-2-amino-4-iminopent-2-enes), were prepared from the reaction of trialkyl aluminum and the corresponding β-diketimines. All these aluminum complexes were characterized by NMR, elemental analysis and HRMS spectroscopy. The molecular structures of complexes 2a, 2c and 2h were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These aluminum alkyl complexes show notable activity towards the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone in the absence and presence of alcohol, and the resulting polymers have narrow molecular weight distributions.

One-pot synthesis of β-diketimine ligands

Symmetric N,N′-dialkyl-2-amino-4-imino-pent-2-enes (nacnacRH) can be prepared in high yields in a simple one-pot reaction from acetylacetone and 2 equiv. of amine. Optimized conditions require the azeotropic removal of water, use of a minimum amount of solvent, and of 1 equiv. of acid. Either para-toluenesulfonic acid, hydrochloric acid, or a mixture of both can be employed, with the latter being most advantageous. Symmetric nacnacRH are thus obtained in higher than 95% purity and with 65% yield for R = Me and 80%–95% yields for R = n-Pr, i-Pr, i-Bu, Bn, Cy, and (+)-CH(Me)Ph.

Synthesis and structures of isopropyl-β-diketiminato copper(I) complexes

The reaction of N,N′-diisopropyl-2-amino-4-iminopent-2-ene (nacnaci-PrH, 1) either with CuOt-Bu or with a mixture of mesityl copper and 10% CuOt-Bu afforded, in the presence of PPh3, CN(C6Me2H3), or MeCN, the Lewis base coordinated complexes nacnaci-PrCuPPh3·0.5 C6H14 (2), nacnaci-PrCuCN(C6Me2H3) (3), and nacnaci-PrCu(NCMe) (4). Compounds 2, 3, and 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Compound 4 afforded two species in deuterated benzene in a 2:1 ratio, which were assigned to {nacnaci-PrCu}2(μ-NCMe) and nacnaci-PrCuNCMe (4). Upon addition of 5 equiv. of MeCN, the two sets collapsed into that of 4. No copper complexes were formed in the presence of styrene, stilbene, or diphenylacetylene.
