Abstract
A straightforward synthesis of a new hybrid scorpionate ligand [(allyl)2B(CH2PPh2)(Pz)](-) ([A2BPN](-)) is reported. Coordination to rhodium resulted in square-planar complexes [Rh(κ(2)-A2BPN)(L)(L')] [L = L' = (1)/2cod (1,5-cyclooctadiene), CN(t)Bu, CO (6); L = CO, L' = NH3, pyridine, PPh3, PMe3] for which spectroscopic data and the molecular structure of [Rh(κ(2)-A2BPN)(CO)PPh3] (11) indicate the ligand to be κN,κP-bound to rhodium with two dangling free allyl groups. Studies in solution point out that the six-membered Rh-N-N-B-C- P metallacycle undergoes a fast inversion in all of them. The bis(carbonyl) complex 6 easily loses a CO group to give [{Rh(A2BPN)(CO)}2], a dinuclear compound in which two mononuclear subunits are brought together by two bridging allyl groups. Coordination to iridium is dominated by a tripodal κN,κP,η(2)-C═C binding mode in the TBPY-5 complexes [Ir(κ(3)-A2BPN)(L)(L')] [L = L' = (1)/2cod (3), CN(t)Bu (5), CO (7); L = CO, L' = PPh3 (13), PMe3 (14), H2C═CH2, (17), MeO2CC≡CCO2Me (dmad, 18)], as confirmed by the single-crystal structure determination of complexes 3 and 18. A fast exchange between the two allyl arms is observed for complexes having L = L' (3, 5, and 7), while those having CO and L ligands (14, 17, and 18) were found to be nonfluxional species. An exception is complex 13, which establishes an equilibrium with the SP-4 configuration. Protonation reactions on complexes 13 and 14 with HCl yielded the hydride complex [Ir(κ(2)-A2BPN)(CO)(Cl)(H)PPh3] (15) and the C-alkyl compound [ Ir{κ(3)-(allyl)B(CH2 CHCH3)(CH2PPh2)(Pz)}(Cl)(CO)PMe3] (16), respectively. The bis(isocyanide) complex 5 reacts with dmad to form [Ir(κ(2)-A2BPN)(CN(t)Bu)2(dmad)]. On the whole, the electronic density provided to the metal by the [A2BPN](-) ligand is very sensitive to the coordination mode. The basicity of the new ligand is similar to that of the Tp(Me2) ligand in the κN,κP mode but comparable to Tp if coordinated in the κN,κP,η(2)-C═C mode.

The complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)] (1) undergoes double protonation reactions with HCl and with HO(2)CCF(3) to give the neutral dihydride complexes [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(X)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)] (X = Cl, eta(1)-O(2)CCF(3)), in which the hydride ligands were located trans to the X groups and in the boat of the complexes, both in the solid state and in solution. The complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(Cl)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)] evolves in solution to the cationic complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)(mu-Cl)]Cl. Removal of the anionic chloride by reaction with methyltriflate allows the isolation of the triflate salt [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)(mu-Cl)]OTf. This complex undergoes a metathesis reaction of hydride by chloride in CDCl(3) under exposure to the direct sunlight to give the complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(Cl)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)(mu-Cl)]OTf. Protonation of both metal centers in [[Ir(mu-Pz)(CO)(2)](2)] with HCl occurs at low temperature, but eventually the mononuclear compound [IrCl(HPz)(CO)(2)] is isolated. The related complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(CO)(P[OPh](3))](2)] reacts with HCl and with HO(2)CCF(3) to give the neutral Ir(III)/Ir(III) complexes [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(X)(CO)(P[OPh](3))](2)], respectively. Both reactions were found to take place stepwise, allowing the isolation of the intermediate monohydrides. They are of different natures, i.e., the metal-metal-bonded Ir(II)/Ir(II) compound [(P[OPh](3))(CO)(Cl)Ir(mu-Pz)(2)Ir(H)(CO)(P[OPh](3))] and the mixed-valence Ir(I)/Ir(III) complex [(P[OPh](3))(CO)Ir(mu-Pz)(2)Ir(H)(eta(1)-O(2)CCF(3))(CO)(P[OPh](3))].

Abstract
A novel one-dimensional (1D) heterometallic chain, [[Rh(2)(dfpma)(2)(MeCN)(4)](2)[Ag(MeCN)(4)]][PF(6)](5) (1), is afforded from the in situ reaction of [ClRh(cod)](2) with [Ag(MeCN)(4)][PF(6)] and dfpma (dfpma = bis(difluorophosphine)methylamine). Dichroic crystals, which are obtained from MeCN/Et(2)O solutions, crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/m with a = 13.570(5) A, b = 20.895(9) A, c = 13.810(6) A, beta = 104.904(7) degrees, V = 3784(3) A(3), Z = 4. X-ray diffraction studies reveal an asymmetric unit comprising two Rh(I)(2) dimers and a square planar Ag(I) cation; this subunit propagates to form a 1D heterometallic chain. Compound 1 displays novel spectroscopic properties in the solid state, including temperature-dependent luminescence.

Abstract
Two ethylene molecules, bonded to different metal atoms of a diiridium(I) complex, can be converted into a bridging 3-butenyl-1-yl ligand and a terminal hydride. Such transformation is initiated by an ethylene C-H activation step and followed by an insertion of the second ethylene into a bridging vinyl ligand. This result illustrates the potentiality of diiridium(I) complexes to promote and support reaction sequences of alkene functionalization through C-H activation.

Abstract
The pyrazolato (Pz) rhodium(I) complexes [{Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(CO)(L)}(2)] (L = CNBu(t), P(OMe)(3), PMe(2)Ph, P(OPh)(3), P(p-tolyl)(3)) result from the reaction of [{Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(CO)(2)}(2)] with the appropriate L ligand in a trans:cis ratio ranging from 60:40 (L = CNBu(t)) to 95:5 (L = P(p-tolyl)(3)). The pure trans isomers add 1 molar equiv of diiodine to give the dirhodium(II) complexes [{Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(L)}(2)] (L = CNBu(t) (6), P(OMe)(3) (7), PMe(2)Ph (8), P(OPh)(3) (9)). These complexes incorporate two iodide ligands trans to the rhodium-rhodium bond, as substantiated by the X-ray structure for 7, while the complex [(P{p-tolyl}(3))(CO)(I)Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(2)(&mgr;-CO)Rh(I)(P{p-tolyl}(3))] (10) contains a bridging ketonic CO ligand, due to the insertion of a terminal CO into the metal-metal bond. The metal-metal bond formation involves a 2e oxidation, since identical compounds (6-9) are obtained by oxidation with [Fe(Cp)(2)](PF(6)) followed by addition of potassium iodide. Further reactions of the dirhodium(II) complexes 6-9 with diiodine leading to the metal-metal rupture are electrophilic additions, as exemplified by the reactions with the positive iodine complex [I(Py)(2)](+). They start at the "endo site" (the metal-metal bond) if it is sterically accessible to the electrophile, to give directly the dirhodium(III) complexes [{Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(L)}(2)(&mgr;-I)](+) (L = CNBu(t), CO). Otherwise, as for the complexes with P-donor ligands, abstraction of a iodide ligand trans to the metal-metal bond (the "exo site") occurs first, to give the dirhodium(II) cationic complexes [(PR(3))(CO)(I)Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(2)Rh(CO)(PR(3))](+) and triiodide. These react again with diiodine to give dirhodium(III) complexes [{Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(PR(3))}(2)(&mgr;-I)](+) similar to those described above, but with triiodide or pentaiodide as counterion, as substantiated by the X-ray structure of [{Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(PMe(2)Ph)}(2)(&mgr;-I)]I(5) (18). The diiridium(II) complexes [{Ir(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(PR(3))}(2)] (PR(3) = P(OPh)(3), PMe(2)Ph) also react with diiodine to give the cationic diiridium(III) complexes [{Ir(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(PR(3))}(2)(&mgr;-I)]I(3) through a reaction pathway involving the "exo site", while no reaction is observed for [{Ir(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(2)}(2)]. Finally, replacement of a carbonyl ligand in [{Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(I)(CO)(L)}(2)(&mgr;-I)](+) (L = CNBu(t), CO) by iodide gives the compounds [(CO)(L)(I)Rh(&mgr;-Pz)(2)(&mgr;-I)Rh(I)(2)(L)].

Abstract
The reaction of [Cu(CH(3)CN)(4)](BF(4)) with 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitropyrazole (Hdmnpz) in the presence of triethylamine yields the new copper(I) complexes [Cu(dmnpz)](3) (1) and (Et(3)NH)(2)[Cu(4)(dmnpz)(6)] (2), depending on the experimental conditions. The reactivity of 1 and 2 toward neutral ligands such as triphenylphosphine, cyclohexyl isocyanide (RNC), and carbon monoxide has been investigated. In particular, both complexes readily react with RNC, giving the dinuclear complexes [Cu(dmnpz)(RNC)](2) (4) and [Cu(dmnpz)(RNC)(2)](2) (5), depending on the copper/RNC ratio, and with PPh(3), affording the dimeric derivative [Cu(dmnpz)(PPh(3))](2) (6). The crystal and molecular structure of 1 has been determined ab initio using X-ray powder diffraction data from conventional laboratory equipment. Crystals of 1 are monoclinic, C2/c, a = 20.057(2) Å, b = 13.816(2) Å, c = 7.883(1) Å, beta = 95.912(4) degrees; R(F) and R(wp) 0.067 and 0.039, respectively, for Rietveld refinement on 3900 data points collected in the range 17 < 2theta < 95 degrees (Cu Kalpha radiation). Crystals of 1 contain planar trimers, with the copper atoms bridged by exo-bidentate ligands and short intermolecular Cu.Cu contacts (3.329(7) Å). For complexes 2 and 4-6, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies have been performed. Crystals of 2 are monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 11.026(1) Å, b = 13.456(2) Å, c = 18.668(5) Å, beta = 92.91(2) degrees, Z = 2. The ionic packing of 2 contains tetranuclear complexes, with the copper atoms connected by six dmnpz ligands. Crystals of 4 are triclinic, P&onemacr;, a = 7.418(1) Å, b = 9.780(1) Å, c = 11.177(3) Å, alpha = 109.61(2); beta = 101.34(3) degrees, gamma = 105.82(1) degrees, Z = 2. Crystals of 5 are triclinic, P&onemacr;, a = 9.506(4) Å, b = 9.957(2) Å, c = 11.658(4) Å, alpha = 86.73(2) degrees, beta = 79.54(2) degrees, gamma = 82.47(4) degrees, Z = 1. Crystals of 6 are triclinic, P&onemacr;, a = 11.379(2) Å, b = 13.592(2) Å, c = 14.409(3) Å, alpha = 81.22(1) degrees, beta = 85.21(1) degrees, gamma = 87.55(1) degrees, Z = 2. 4, 5, and 6 are binuclear complexes bearing one RNC, two RNC, and one triphenylphosphine ligands on each copper atom, respectively. The steric requirement of the dmnpz ligands, in the presence of RNC or PPh(3), forces the inner [Cu(2)(dmnpz)(2)] core of the three complexes into markedly different conformations.
