Borabenzene Derivatives. 23.1 New Synthetic Entry into Borabenzene Chemistry via Doubly Kaliated Pentadienes: Synthesis of 1-(Dimethylamino)-3-methylene-1,2,3,6-tetrahydroborinines and Lithium 1-(Dimethylamino)boratabenzene Derivatives

Homocoupling of Isocyanide at the Si(II) Center of Borylaminoamidinatosilylene

Two borylaminoamidinatosilylenes (L)[(1,5-C₈H₁₄)B(Ar)N]Si (L = PhC(NtBu)₂, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃ (1)) and (L)[(1,5-C₈H₁₄)B(Ar')N]Si (Ar' = 2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂ (2)) have been prepared and utilized to investigate the reaction toward isocyanide. Reactions of 1 with the respective CN-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃ and CNCy (Cy = cyclo-C₆H₁₁) produced compounds (L)Si(NAr)C(N-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)B(1,5-C₈H₁₄)(CN-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃) (3) and (L)Si(NAr)C(NCy)C(NCy)B(1,5-C₈H₁₄)(CNCy) (4). Reactions of 2 with the respective CNCy and CN-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃ yielded compounds cyclo-(L)SiN(Ar')C(NCy)B(1,5-C₈H₁₄)C(NCy) (5) and cyclo-(L)[(1,5-C₈H₁₄)B(Ar')N]SiC(CN-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)N(2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)C(N-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃) (6). Compounds 3-6 have different compositions and structures from each other. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest initial formation of (L)[(1,5-C₈H₁₄)B(←:CN-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)(Ar)N]Si (A), (L)[(1,5-C₈H₁₄)B(←:CNCy)(Ar)N]Si (A'), (L)[(1,5-C₈H₁₄)B(←:CNCy)-(Ar')N]Si (A″), and (L)[(1,5-C₈H₁₄)B(←:CN-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)(Ar')N]Si (A‴) as the respective intermediates. The as-followed transition states TS, TS1', TS1″, and TS‴ all feature probable Si:→C(═N):→B bonding with different Gibbs energies of 7.24, 2.46, 3.86, and 6.59 kcal/mol, respectively, due to variation among the Ar, Ar', 2,6-Me₂C₆H₃, and Cy groups in these species, and reacted in different ways.

Ligation of Boratabenzene and 9-Borataphenanthrene to Coinage Metals

The reactions of boratabenzene and borataphenanthrene anions with group 11 Ph₃PMCl reagents furnished η² coordination complexes, with the exception of the copper boratabenzene species that adopted an η⁶ mode. The binding of arene ligands to copper in an η⁶ manner is rare, and altering the ancillary ligand on copper to an N-heterocyclic carbene switched the binding of the boratabenzene to η², indicating that such ligands are capable of vacating coordination sites. The η² coordination complexes bind side-on, akin to olefins, via a borataalkene unit, although with the carbon atom much more proximal to the metal center than boron.

Mono(boratabenzene) rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes: synthesis, structure and catalytic behaviors for styrene polymerization

Four mono(boratabenzene) rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes, [(3,5-Me2-C5H3BR)Ln(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)] (1: R = NEt2, Ln = Sc; 2: R = NEt2, Ln = Lu; 3: R = Ph, Ln = Sc; 4: R = Ph, Ln = Lu), were synthesized efficiently via a one-pot strategy with Li[3,5-Me2-C5H3BR] (R = NEt2, Ph), LnCl3(THF)x (Ln = Sc, x = 3; Ln = Lu, x = 0), and LiCH2SiMe3. The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Variable-temperature NMR studies indicated that the energy barrier for the rotation of aminoboratabenzene in 1 (ΔG‡ ≈ 71 kJ mol−1) is higher than that of phenylboratabenzene in 3 (ΔG‡ ≈ 59 kJ mol−1). These mono(boratabenzene) rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes’ catalytic behaviors for styrene polymerization were investigated, and found that mono(boratabenzene) scandium dialkyl complexes show high catalytic activities for syndiotactic polymerization upon activation with cocatalysts.

Organometallic building blocks with amino-substituted cyclopentadienyl and boratabenzene ligands for the synthesis of heterometallic complexes and clusters

A comparative study of the reactivity of isolobal rhenium and molybdenum carbonylmetallates containing a borole, in [Re(eta5-C4H4BPh)(CO)3]- (2), a boratanaphthalene, in [Mo(eta5-2,4-MeC9H6BMe)(CO)3]- (4a) and [Mo(eta5-2,4-MeC9H6BNi-Pr2)(CO)3]- (4b), a boratabenzene, in [Mo(eta5-3,5-Me2C5H3BNi-Pr2)(CO)3]- (6) or a dimethylaminocyclopentadienyl ligand, in [Mo(eta5-C5H4NMe2)(CO)3]- (7), toward palladium(II), gold(I), mercury(II) and platinum(II) complexes has allowed an evaluation of the role of these pi-bonded ligands on the structures and unprecedented coordination modes observed in the resulting metal-metal bonded, heterometallic complexes. The new metallate 6 was reacted with [AuCl(PPh3)], and with 1 or 2 equiv. HgCl2, which afforded the new heterodinuclear complexes [Au{Mo(eta5-3,5-Me2C5H3BNi-Pr2)(CO)3}(PPh3)] (Mo-Au) (10) and [Hg{Mo(eta5-3,5-Me2C5H3BNi-Pr2)(CO)3}Cl] (Hg-Mo) (11) and the heterometallic chain complex [Hg{Mo(eta5-3,5-Me2C5H3BNi-Pr2)(CO)3}2] (Mo-Hg-Mo) (12), respectively. Reactions of the new metallate 7 with HgCl2, trans-[PtCl2(CNt-Bu)2] and trans-[PtCl2(NCPh)2] yielded the heterodinuclear complex [Hg{Mo(eta5-C5H4NMe2)(CO)3}Cl] (Mo-Hg) (15), the heterotrinuclear chain complexes trans-[Pt{Mo(eta5-C5H4NMe2)(CO)3}2(CNt-Bu)2] (Mo-Pt-Mo) (16) and trans-[Pt{Mo(eta5-C5H4NMe2)(CO)3}2(NCPh)2] (Mo-Pt-Mo) (17), the mononuclear complex [Mo(eta5-C5H4NMe2)(CO)3Cl] (18), the lozenge-type cluster [Mo2Pt2(eta5-C5H4NMe2)2(CO)8] (19) and the heterodinuclear complex [[upper bond 1 start]Pt{Mo(eta5-C5H4N[upper bond 1 end]Me2)(CO)3}(NCPh)Cl](Mo-Pt) (20), respectively. The complexes 11, 16, 17.2THF, 18 and 20 have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction and 20 differs from all other compounds in that the dimethylaminocyclopentadienyl ligand forms a bridge between the metals.

Syntheses and structures of Mg(C5H5BMe)2, Mg(3,5-Me2C5H3BNMe2)2, the 2,2'-bipyridine adduct Mg(C5H5BMe)2(bipy), and the N-bonded aminoboratabenzene species Mg(3,5-Me2C5H3BNMe2)2(THF)2

The donor-free magnesocene analogues bis(1-methylboratabenzene)magnesium (1) and bis[3,5-dimethyl-1- (dimethylamino)boratabenzene]magnesium (2) are synthesized in good yields by the reactions of dimethylmagnesium with (trimethylstannyl)dihydroborinine precursors 3 and 4. In the crystalline state, both 1 and 2 possess sandwich structures with eta 6-coordinated boratabenzene ligands and display crystallographic centrosymmetry. Compound 1 reacts with the nitrogen donor 2,2'-bipyridine to give the Lewis base adduct (1)(bipy) (identical to 5). In the crystal structure of 5, one boratabenzene ligand is eta 6-bonded to the central metal while the other ligand adopts an eta 1-bonding mode. Crystallization of compound 2 from THF produces the solvate (2)(THF)2 (identical to 6), which exhibits a distorted tetrahedral N2O2 coordination environment around the magnesium atom. The average Mg-N bond distance is 2.141(3) A, and the N-Mg-N angle is 148.0(1) degrees. The observation of an aminoboratabenzene that is solely sigma-bonded to a metal is without precedent.
