Abstract
The tetradentate azamacrocycle cyclam (=1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) was studied profoundly for the coordination of transition metal ions, and the resulting complexes were investigated extensively for their catalytic performance in, e.g., O2 activation and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. Although the successful synthesis of analogous P4 macrocycles was described earlier, no tetradentate N,P mixed 14-membered macrocycles have been prepared to date and their chemistry remains elusive. Thus, in this work, we showcase the synthesis of phospha-aza mixed cyclam-based macrocycles by selectively "exchanging" one or two secondary amines in the macrocycle isocyclam (=1,4,7,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) with tertiary phosphines. In addition, we herein present the preparation of the corresponding nickel complexes along with their complex chemical and structural characterization to provide first coordination studies.

Diamidophosphines with six-membered chelates and their coordination chemistry with group 4 metals: development of a trimethylene-methane-tethered [PN2]-type "molecular claw". Abstract
The coordination chemistry of the phosphine-tethered diamidophosphine ligands PhP(CH2CH2CH2NHPh)2 (pr[NPN]H2) and PhP(1,2-CH2-C6H4-NHSiMe3)2 (bn[NPN]H2) featuring six-membered N–C3–P chelates was explored with group 4 metals, which allowed for the consecutive development of a new trimethylene-methane-tethered [PN2] scaffold. In the case of the propylene-linked system pr[NPN]H2, access to the sparingly soluble dibenzyl derivative pr[NPN]ZrBn2 (3-Zr) was gained, while thermally sensitive zirconium and hafnium diiodo complexes bn[NPN]MI2 (5-M, M = Zr, Hf) were isolated in the case of the benzylene-linked derivative bn[NPN]H2. Despite the related phosphine-tethered backbone architectures of both of these ligands, their group 4 complexes were found to exhibit either C1-symmetric (bn[NPN]MX2) or averaged CS-symmetric (pr[NPN]MX2) structures in solution. To restrain the overall flexibility of these systems and thereby control the properties of the resulting complexes without disrupting the six-membered chelates, the new trimethylene-methane-tethered N,N′-di-(tert-butyl)-substituted [PN2]H2 protioligand was designed. This tripodal ligand system was prepared on a gram scale and its CS-symmetric dichloro complexes [PN2]MCl2 (6-M, M = Ti, Zr, Hf) were isolated subsequently. The benzene-soluble dibenzyl derivative [PN2]ZrBn2 (7-Zr) was synthesised as well and characterised by X-ray diffraction. These results are discussed not only in conjunction with the known [NPN]-coordinated group 4 complexes incorporating five-membered chelates, but also in the context of “molecular claws” that are related to the new [PN2] tripod.

Abstract
A new dinitrogen complex, deep blue-green {[NPN]*Zr(THF)}(2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2)) ([NPN]* = {[N-(2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2))(2-N-5-MeC(6)H(3))](2)PPh}), was prepared in high yield by the reduction of [NPN]*ZrCl(2) with 2.2 equiv of KC(8) in THF under N(2). The solid-state molecular structure shows that N(2) is strongly activated (N-N bond length: 1.503(6) A) and bound side-on to two Zr atoms. Coordinated THF can be readily replaced by adding pyridine (py) or PMe(2)R (R = Me, Ph) to the complex to obtain {[NPN]*Zr(py)}(2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2)) or {[NPN]*Zr(PMe(2)R)}(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2)){Zr[NPN]*} in high yield. X-ray diffraction experiments show that the N(2) moiety is strongly activated and remains side-on bound to Zr for the py and PMe(2)Ph adducts; interestingly, only one PMe(2)Ph coordinates to the Zr(2)N(2) unit. {[NPN]*Zr(PMe(2)R)}(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2)){Zr[NPN]*} reacts slowly with H(2) to provide {[NPN]*Zr(PMe(2)R)}(mu-H)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2)H){Zr[NPN]*}, as determined by isotopic labeling, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The THF adduct does not react with H(2) even after an extended period, whereas the pyridine adduct does undergo a reaction with H(2), but to a mixture of products.

Abstract
The syntheses of tantalum derivatives with the potentially tridentate diamido-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand are described. Aminolysis and alkane elimination reactions with the diamine-NHC ligands, (Ar)[NCN]H(2) (where (Ar)[NCN]H(2) = (ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(2)(C(3)N(2)); Ar = Mes, p-Tol), provided complexes with a bidentate amide-amine donor configuration. Attempts to promote coordination of the remaining pendent amine donor were unsuccessful. Metathesis reactions with the dilithiated diamido-NHC ligand ((Ar)[NCN]Li(2)) and various Cl(x)Ta(NR'(2))(5-)(x) precursors were successful and generated the desired octahedral (Ar)[NCN]TaCl(x)(NR'(2))(3-)(x) complexes. Attempts to prepare trialkyl tantalum complexes by this methodology resulted in the formation of an unusual metallaaziridine derivative. DFT calculations on model complexes show that the strained metallaaziridine ring forms because it allows the remaining substituents to adopt preferable bonding positions. The calculations predict that the lowest energy pathway involves a tantalum alkylidene intermediate, which undergoes C-H bond activation alpha to the amido to form the metallaaziridine moiety. This mechanism was confirmed by examining the distribution of deuterium atoms in an experiment between (Mes)[NCN]Li(2) and Cl(2)Ta(CD(2)Ph)(3). The single-crystal X-ray structures of (p)(-Tol)[NCNH]Ta(NMe(2))(4) (3), (Mes)[NCNH]Ta=CHPh(CH(2)Ph)(2) (4), (p)(-Tol)[NCN]Ta(NMe(2))(3) (7), (Mes)[NCCN]Ta(CH(2)(t)Bu)(2) (11), and (Mes)[NCCN]TaCl(CH(2)(t)Bu) (14) are included.
