Abstract
The copolymers of carbon monoxide (CO) and olefins, namely polyketones, are a
family of widely used materials. In the catalytic preparation of these materials, palladium(II)
catalysts represent the most successful catalytic systems. The production of both alternating
and non-alternating polyketones has been achieved, with a great difference in their physical
properties. Herein, a variety of palladium(II) catalysts, employed for the copolymerization of
CO with various olefinic monomers, such as ethylene, α -olefins, styrene and polar vinyl
monomers, are fully summarized. The influence of important factors, such as solvents and
counterions on specific copolymerization, is also discussed. This review aims to enlighten the
design of new Pd catalysts with improved properties, as well as the development of new
polyketone materials.

Abstract
Ionic reactions are the most common reactions used in chemical synthesis. In relatively low dielectric constant solvents (e.g., dichloromethane, toluene), ions usually exist as ion pairs. Despite the importance of counterions, a quantitative description of how the paired 'counterion' affects the reaction kinetic is still elusive. We introduce a general and quantitative model, namely transition-state expansion (TSE), that describes how the size of a counterion affects the transition-state structure and the kinetics of an ionic reaction. This model could rationalize the counterion effects in nucleophilic substitutions and gold-catalyzed enyne cycloisomerizations. Abstract
Synthesis of a series of iridium(I) complexes of the type [(COD)Ir(IMes)(PPh3)]X (X = BF4, OTf, and BArF) has been established. Application of these species in mild hydrogen isotope exchange processes revealed more efficient catalysis and, further, a wider solvent scope when employing larger, more weakly coordinating counterions.

Abstract
The late transition metal catalysts for homo- and copolymerizations of olefins expand the polymer properties and the usable monomer feedstock of early transition metal catalysts. A critical step for a polymerization is the activation of catalyst precursors and the generation of the actual active site. This perspective discusses possible activation protocols for two well-known catalyst systems, the a-diimine Ni or Pd olefin polymerization catalysts and the Pd catalysts for alkene/CO copolymerization. The general concept of catalyst activation is outlined and similarities as well as differences between single-component catalysts and in situ activated systems are highlighted.

Abstract
The catalytic activity and stereoselectivity of complexes [Pd(eta(1),eta(2)-C(8)H(12)OMe)(Ar--N==C(R')--C(R')==N--Ar)]X in the copolymerization of CO and p-methylstyrene have been correlated with their interionic structure in solution and in the solid state, as determined by (19)F,(1)H-HOESY NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies, respectively. The highest productivity is obtained with unhindered diimine ligands bearing electron-donating substituents and with the least coordinating counterion. Copolymers with a microstructure ranging from atactic to predominantly isotactic are obtained. The degree of isotacticity increases as the steric hindrance in the apical positions and the coordinating ability of the counterion increase. The counterion is located close to the diimine in both solution and the solid state but it moves toward the palladium as the steric hindrance in the apical positions decreases. When the latter is small the counterion competes with the substrate for apical coordination, and consequently it affects the productivity. In the case of ortho-dimethyl-substituted ligands the counterion is confined in the back, above the N==C(R')--C(R')==N moiety, and does not affect the productivity. However, it contributes to increasing the stereoregularity of the copolymer by making the aryl moieties more rigid. With R'=Me and Ar=o-Me(2)C(6)H(3) an ll of 81 % and 72 % was obtained with X(-)=CF(3)SO(3) (-) or BArF(-), respectively. The isotacticity of the copolymers produced by ortho-monosubstituted catalysts depends greatly on the counterion and ranges from 30 % to 59 % with X(-)=BArF(-) and X(-)=CF(3)SO(3) (-), respectively, with Ar=o-EtC(6)H(4) and R'=Me. Based on the interionic structural results, this effect can be explained by a greater reduction of the copolymerization rate of C(s)-symmetric isomers with respect to their C(2)-symmetric counterparts.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry of the chiral bioxazoline ligand (4S,4'S)-2,2'-bis(4-isopropyl-4,5-dihydrooxazole) to Pd(II) provides evidence that the ligand bonding can occur either through chelation of one Pd(II) ion leading to a mononuclear species with the expected cis geometry, or by double bridging of two Pd(II) ions giving a dinuclear complex with trans geometry. The species in solution are identified by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Both the mononuclear and the dinuclear complexes promote the CO/styrene copolymerization, yielding the corresponding polyketone with a fully or a predominantly isotactic microstructure, depending on the reaction medium. The nature of the anion present in the palladium precatalysts affects the polyketone stereochemistry. MALDI-TOF analysis of the copolymers synthesized reveals the presence of p-hydroxyphenolic end-groups, thus confirming and explaining the role of 1,4-hydroquinone as a molecular weight regulator.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and PGSE ((1)H and (19)F) NMR diffusion studies on the cationic [(eta(6)-arene)Mn(CO)(3)][X] (arene = anisole, 4-chloroanisole, and 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene; X = BPh(4) and BArF) are reported. The tetraphenyl borate complexes of anisole and 4-chloroanisole show surprisingly strong ion pairing in dichloromethane solution, whereas the BArF salts do not. (1)H,(1)H-NOESY data support this anion selectivity. In chloroform solution one finds the usual strong ion pairing for both anions. The solid-state structure of [(eta(6)-1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene)Mn(CO)(3)][BPh(4)] has been determined. (13)C NMR and IR data for the new complexes are reported. The observed IR frequencies are higher for the BArF complexes than for the BPh(4) complexes.

Abstract
Cationic Pd(II) complexes modified with achiral C(2v)-symmetric alpha-diimine ligands allow preparation of atactic or isotactic stereoblock CO/p-methylstyrene copolymers; both catalyst activity and polyketone microstructure depend on the choice of alpha-diimine substituents and counterion.
