Facile Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of 2D Imine-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Exceptional Iodine Capture

A General Synthesis Method for Covalent Organic Framework and Inorganic 2D Materials Hybrids

Two-dimensional (2D) inorganic/organic hybrids provide a versatile platform for diverse applications, including electronic, catalysis, and energy storage devices. The recent surge in 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has introduced an organic counterpart for the development of advanced 2D organic/inorganic hybrids with improved electronic coupling, charge separation, and carrier mobility. However, existing synthesis methods have primarily focused on few-layered film structures, which limits scalability for practical applications. Herein, we present a general synthesis approach for a range of COF/inorganic 2D material hybrids, utilizing 2D inorganic materials as both catalysts and inorganic building blocks. By leveraging the intrinsic Lewis acid sites on the inorganic 2D materials such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and transition metal dichalcogenides, COFs with diverse functional groups and topologies can grow on the surface of inorganic 2D materials. The controlled 2D morphology and excellent solution dispersibility of the resulting hybrids allow for easy processing into films through vacuum filtration. As proof of concept, hBN/COF films were employed as filters for Rhodamine 6G removal under flow-through conditions, achieving a removal rate exceeding 93%. The present work provides a simple and versatile synthesis method for the scalable fabrication of COF/inorganic 2D hybrids, offering exciting opportunities for practical applications such as water treatment and energy storage.

Microwave Assisted Fast Synthesis of a Donor-Acceptor COF Towards Photooxidative Amidation Catalysis

The synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) at bulk scale require robust, straightforward, and cost-effective techniques. However, the traditional solvothermal synthetic methods of COFs suffer low scalability as well as requirement of sensitive reaction environment and multiday reaction time (2-10 days) which greatly restricts their practical application. Here, we report microwave assisted rapid and optimized synthesis of a donor-acceptor (D-A) based highly crystalline COF, TzPm-COF in second (10 sec) to minute (10 min) time scale. With increasing the reaction time from seconds to minutes crystallinity, porosity and morphological changes are observed for TzPm-COF. Owing to visible range light absorption, suitable band alignment, and low exciton binding energy (Eb=64.6 meV), TzPm-COF can efficaciously produce superoxide radical anion (O2 .-) after activating molecular oxygen (O2) which eventually drives aerobic photooxidative amidation reaction with high recyclability. This photocatalytic approach works well with a variety of substituted aromatic aldehydes having electron-withdrawing or donating groups and cyclic, acyclic, primary or secondary amines with moderate to high yield. Furthermore, catalytic mechanism was established by monitoring the real-time reaction progress through in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic (DRIFTS) study.

Tailoring Catalysis of Encapsulated Platinum Nanoparticles by Pore Wall Engineering of Covalent Organic Frameworks

While supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) have shown significant promise in heterogeneous catalysis, precise control over their interaction with the support, which profoundly impacts their catalytic performance, remains a significant challenge. In this study, Pt NPs are incorporated into thioether-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (denoted COF-Sx), enabling precise control over the size and electronic state of Pt NPs by adjusting the thioether density dangling on the COF pore walls. Notably, the resulting Pt@COF-Sx demonstrate exceptional selectivity (> 99 %) in catalytic hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene to p-chloroaniline, in sharp contrast to the poor selectivity of Pt NPs embedded in thioether-free COFs. Furthermore, the conversion over Pt@COF-Sx exhibits a volcano-type curve as the thioether density increases, due to the corresponding change of accessible Pt sites. This work provides an effective approach to regulating the catalysis of metal NPs via their microenvironment modulation, with the aid of rational design and precise tailoring of support structure.

Recent progress in chromium removal from wastewater using covalent organic frameworks - A review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer a pivotal solution to urgently address heavy metal removal from wastewater due to their exceptional attributes such as high adsorption capacity, tunable porosity, controllable energy band structures, superior photocatalytic performance, and high stability-reusability. Despite these advantages, COFs encounter certain challenges, including inefficient utilization of visible light, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, and limited access to active sites due to close stacking. To enhance the photocatalytic and adsorptive performance of COF-based catalysts, various modification strategies have been reported, with a particular focus on molecular design, structural regulation, and heterostructure engineering. This review comprehensively explores recent advancements in COF-based photocatalytic and adsorptive materials for chromium removal from wastewater, addressing kinetics, mechanisms, and key influencing factors. Additionally, it sheds light on the influence of chemical composition and functional groups of COFs on the efficiency of hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] removal.
